We revisit our previous work [Phys. Rev. D 95, 096014 (2017)] where neutrino oscillation and nonoscillation data were analyzed in the standard framework with three neutrino families, in order to constrain their absolute masses and to probe their ordering (either normal, NO, or inverted, IO). We include updated oscillation results to discuss best fits and allowed ranges for the two squared mass differences $δm^2$ and $Δm^2$, the three mixing angles $θ_{12}$, $θ_{23}$ and $θ_{13}$, as well as constraints on the CP-violating phase $δ$, plus significant indications in favor of NO vs IO at the level of $Δχ^2=10.0$. We then consider nonoscillation data from beta decay, from neutrinoless double beta decay (if neutrinos are Majorana), and from various cosmological input variants (in the data or the model) leading to results dubbed as default, aggressive, and conservative. In the default option, we obtain from nonoscillation data an extra contribution $Δχ^2 = 2.2$ in favor of NO, and an upper bound on the sum of neutrino masses $Σ< 0.15$ eV at $2σ$; both results - dominated by cosmology - can be strengthened or weakened by using more aggressive or conservative options, respectively. Taking into account such variations, we find that the combination of all (oscillation and nonoscillation) neutrino data favors NO at the level of $3.2-3.7σ$, and that $Σ$ is constrained at the $2σ$ level within $Σ< 0.12-0.69$ eV. The upper edge of this allowed range corresponds to an effective $β$-decay neutrino mass $m_β= Σ/3 = 0.23$ eV, at the sensitivity frontier of the KATRIN experiment.
In this addendum to arXiv:1103.0734 we consider the recent results from long-baseline $ν_μ\toν_e$ searches at the T2K and MINOS experiments and investigate their implications for the mixing angle $θ_{13}$ and the leptonic Dirac CP phase $δ$. By combining the $2.5σ$ indication for a non-zero value of $θ_{13}$ coming from T2K data with global neutrino oscillation data we obtain a significance for $θ_{13} > 0$ of about $3σ$ with best fit points $\sin^2θ_{13} = 0.013(0.016)$ for normal (inverted) neutrino mass ordering. These results depend somewhat on assumptions concerning the analysis of reacto…
Within the standard three-neutrino framework, the absolute neutrino masses and their ordering (either normal, NO, or inverted, IO) are currently unknown. However, the combination of current data coming from oscillation experiments, neutrinoless double beta decay searches, and cosmological surveys, can provide interesting constraints for such unknowns in the sub-eV mass range, down to O(0.1) eV in some cases. We discuss current limits on absolute neutrino mass observables by performing a global data analysis, that includes the latest results from oscillation experiments, neutrinoless double bet…
We perform a global Bayesian analysis of currently available neutrino data, putting data from oscillation experiments, neutrinoless double beta decay ($0νββ$), and precision cosmology on an equal footing. We evaluate the discovery potential of future $0νββ$ experiments and the Bayes factor of the two possible neutrino mass ordering schemes for different prior choices. We show that the indication for normal ordering is still very mild and does not strongly depend on realistic prior assumptions or different combinations of cosmological data sets. We find a wide range for $0νββ$ discovery potenti…
A high-statistics measurement of the neutrinos from a galactic core-collapse supernova is extremely important for understanding the explosion mechanism, and studying the intrinsic properties of neutrinos themselves. In this paper, we explore the possibility to constrain the absolute scale of neutrino masses $m^{}_ν$ via the detection of galactic supernova neutrinos at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) with a 20 kiloton liquid-scintillator detector. In assumption of a nearly-degenerate neutrino mass spectrum and a normal mass ordering, the upper bound on the absolute neutrino…
We present an up-to-date global analysis of data coming from neutrino oscillation and non-oscillation experiments, as available in April 2018, within the standard framework including three massive and mixed neutrinos. We discuss in detail the status of the three-neutrino (3nu) mass-mixing parameters, both known and unknown. Concerning the latter, we find that: normal ordering (NO) is favored over inverted ordering (IO) at 3sigma level; the Dirac CP phase is constrained within ~15% (~9%) uncertainty in NO (IO) around nearly-maximal CP-violating values; the octant of the largest mixing angle and…
We define the theoretical framework and deduce the conditions under which multi-messenger astronomy can provide useful information about neutrino masses and their ordering. The framework uses time differences between the arrival of neutrinos and the other light messenger, i.e. the graviton, emitted in astrophysical catastrophes. We also provide a preliminary feasibility study elucidating the experimental reach and challenges for planned neutrino detectors such as Hyper-Kamiokande as well as future several megaton detectors. This study shows that future experiments can be useful in testing inde…
After the successful determination of the reactor neutrino mixing angle θ_13 ~ 0.16 \neq 0, a new feature suggested by the current neutrino oscillation data is a sizeable deviation of the atmospheric neutrino mixing angle θ_23 from π/4. Using the fact that the neutrino mixing matrix U = U_e^\dagger U_ν, where U_e and U_νresult from the diagonalisation of the charged lepton and neutrino mass matrices, and assuming that U_νhas a i) bimaximal (BM), ii) tri-bimaximal (TBM) form, or else iii) corresponds to the conservation of the lepton charge L' = L_e - L_μ- L_τ(LC), we investigate quantitatively…
We show that successful strong thermal leptogenesis, where the final asymmetry is independent of the initial conditions and in particular a large pre-existing asymmetry is efficiently washed-out, favours values of the lightest neutrino mass $m_1 \gtrsim 10\,{\rm meV}$ for normal ordering (NO) and $m_1 \gtrsim 3\,{\rm meV}$ for inverted ordering (IO) for models with orthogonal matrix entries respecting $|Ω_{ij}^2| \lesssim 2$. . We show analytically why lower values of $m_1$ require a high level of fine tuning in the seesaw formula and/or in the flavoured decay parameters (in the electronic for…
We present the results of a global analysis of the neutrino oscillation data available as of fall 2018 in the framework of three massive mixed neutrinos with the goal at determining the ranges of allowed values for the six relevant parameters. We describe the complementarity and quantify the tensions among the results of the different data samples contributing to the determination of each parameter. We also show how those vary when combining our global likelihood with the chi^2 map provided by Super-Kamiokande for their atmospheric neutrino data analysis in the same framework. The best fit of …
We explore a simple but extremely predictive extension of the scotogenic model. We promote the scotogenic symmetry $\mathbb{Z}_2$ to the flavour non-Abelian symmetry $Σ(81)$, which can also automatically protect dark matter stability. In addition, $Σ(81)$ leads to striking predictions in the lepton sector: only Inverted Ordering is realised, the absolute neutrino mass scale is predicted to be $m_\text{lightest} \approx 7.5 \times 10^{-4}$ eV and the Majorana phases are correlated in such a way that $|m_{ee}| \approx 0.018$ eV. The model also leads to a strong correlation between the solar mixi…
The $μτ$-reflection symmetry is a simple symmetry capable of predicting all the unknown CP phases of the lepton sector and the atmospheric angle but too simple to predict the absolute neutrino mass scale or the mass ordering. We show that by combining it with a discrete abelian symmetry in a nontrivial way we can additionally enforce a texture-zero and obtain a highly predictive scenario where the lightest neutrino mass is fixed to be in the few meV range for two normal ordering (NO) solutions or in the tens of meV in one inverted ordering (IO) solution. The rate for neutrinoless double beta d…
We study the interplay between flavor symmetries and leptogenesis in the case when the scale of flavor symmetry breaking is higher than the scale at which lepton number is violated. We show that when the heavy Majorana neutrinos belong to an irreducible representation of the flavor group, all the leptogenesis CP asymmetries vanish in the limit of exact symmetry. In the case of reducible representations we identify a general condition that, if satisfied, guarantees the same result. We then focus on the case of a model in which an $A_4$ flavor symmetry yields a drastic reduction in the number of…
In the current 3nu paradigm, flavor oscillations probe 3 mixing angles (theta_12, theta_23, theta_13), one CP phase delta, and two squared mass differences delta m^2>0 and Delta m^2, where sign(Delta m^2)=+ (-) for normal (inverted) ordering. Absolute nu masses can be probed by the effective m_beta in beta decay, by the total mass Sigma in cosmology and, if neutrinos are Majorana, by another effective m_{beta beta} in 0nu2beta decay. Within an updated global analysis of (non)oscillation data, we constrain these 3nu parameters, both separately and in selected pairs, and highlight the concordanc…
There is still a problem in neutrino physics related to the configuration of neutrino masses: Are neutrinos arranged by masses following the Standard Model as three generations of fundamental particles, Gen III>Gen II>Gen I, thus forming a structural-normal hierarchy, or deviate from that principle? The biggest obstacle that is still present is the sign of the absolute value of the difference of the square of neutrino masses. It was avoided by applying the theory of neutrino oscillation probability for each structure of the neutrino mass hierarchy. With such a theoretical approach the equation…
We propose a neutrino mass model with $μτ$-flavored CP symmetry, where the effective light neutrino Lagrangian enjoys an additional invariance under a Friedberg-Lee (FL) transformation on the left-handed flavor neutrino fields, that leads to a highly predictive and testable scenario. While both types of the light neutrino mass ordering, i.e., Normal Ordering (NO) as well as the Inverted Ordering (IO) are allowed, the absolute scale of neutrino masses is fixed by the vanishing determinant of light Majorana neutrino mass matrix $M_ν$. We show that for both types of mass ordering, whilst the atmo…
New theory of neutrino masses and mixing is introduced. This theory is based on a simple S_3 symmetric democratic neutrino mass matrix, and predicts the neutrino mass spectrum of normal ordering. Taking into account the matter effect and proper averaging of the oscillations, this theory agrees with the variety of atmospheric, solar and accelerator neutrino data. Moreover, the absolute scale of the neutrino masses m of 0.03 eV is determined in this theory, using the atmospheric neutrino oscillation data. In case of tiny perturbations in the democratic mass matrix only one this scale parameter m…
Neutrino oscillations have become well-known phenomenon; the measurements of neutrino mixing angles and mass squared differences are continuously improving. Future oscillation experiments will eventually determine the remaining unknown neutrino parameters, namely, the mass ordering, normal or inverted, and the CP-violating phase. On the other hand, the absolute mass scale of neutrinos could be probed by cosmological observations, single beta decay as well as by neutrinoless double beta decay experiments. Furthermore, the last one may shed light on the nature of neutrinos, Dirac or Majorana, by…
Neutrino are massless in the Standard Model. The most popular mechanism to generate neutrino masses are the type I and type II seesaw, where right-handed neutrinos and a scalar triplet are augmented to the Standard Model, respectively. In this work, we discuss a model where a type I + II seesaw mechanism naturally arises via spontaneous symmetry breaking of an enlarged gauge group. Lepton flavor violation is a common feature in such setup and for this reason, we compute the model contribution to the $μ\rightarrow eγ$ and $μ\rightarrow 3e$ decays. Moreover, we explore the connection between the…
We analyse the interplay of generalised CP transformations and the non-Abelian discrete group $T^{\prime}$ and use the semi-direct product $G_f= T^{\prime}\rtimes H_{\text{CP}}$, as family symmetry acting in the lepton sector. The family symmetry is shown to be spontaneously broken in a geometrical manner. In the resulting flavour model, naturally small Majorana neutrino masses for the light active neutrinos are obtained through the type I see-saw mechanism. The known masses of the charged leptons, lepton mixing angles and the two neutrino mass squared differences are reproduced by the model w…
