With the rapidly growing number of security-sensitive systems that use voice as the primary input, it becomes increasingly important to address these systems' potential vulnerability to replay attacks. Previous efforts to address this concern have focused primarily on single-channel audio. In this paper, we introduce a novel neural network-based replay attack detection model that further leverages spatial information of multi-channel audio and is able to significantly improve the replay attack detection performance.

The evolution of modern voice controlled devices (VCDs) in recent years has revolutionized the Internet of Things, and resulted in increased realization of smart homes, personalization and home automation through voice commands. The introduction of VCDs in IoT is expected to give emergence of new subfield of IoT, called Multimedia of Thing (MoT). These VCDs can be exploited in IoT driven environment to generate various spoofing attacks including the replays. Replay attacks are generated through replaying the recorded audio of legitimate human speaker with the intent of deceiving the VCDs havin…

An attacker may use a variety of techniques to fool an automatic speaker verification system into accepting them as a genuine user. Anti-spoofing methods meanwhile aim to make the system robust against such attacks. The ASVspoof 2017 Challenge focused specifically on replay attacks, with the intention of measuring the limits of replay attack detection as well as developing countermeasures against them. In this work, we propose our replay attacks detection system - Attentive Filtering Network, which is composed of an attention-based filtering mechanism that enhances feature representations in b…

Various adversarial audio attacks have recently been developed to fool automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems. We here propose a defense against such attacks based on the uncertainty introduced by dropout in neural networks. We show that our defense is able to detect attacks created through optimized perturbations and frequency masking on a state-of-the-art end-to-end ASR system. Furthermore, the defense can be made robust against attacks that are immune to noise reduction. We test our defense on Mozilla's CommonVoice dataset, the UrbanSound dataset, and an excerpt of the LibriSpeech datas…

An adversarial attack is an exploitative process in which minute alterations are made to natural inputs, causing the inputs to be misclassified by neural models. In the field of speech recognition, this has become an issue of increasing significance. Although adversarial attacks were originally introduced in computer vision, they have since infiltrated the realm of speech recognition. In 2017, a genetic attack was shown to be quite potent against the Speech Commands Model. Limited-vocabulary speech classifiers, such as the Speech Commands Model, are used in a variety of applications, particula…

Adversarial examples (AEs) are crafted by adding human-imperceptible perturbations to inputs such that a machine-learning based classifier incorrectly labels them. They have become a severe threat to the trustworthiness of machine learning. While AEs in the image domain have been well studied, audio AEs are less investigated. Recently, multiple techniques are proposed to generate audio AEs, which makes countermeasures against them an urgent task. Our experiments show that, given an AE, the transcription results by different Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems differ significantly, as th…
Automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems are vulnerable to audio adversarial examples that attempt to deceive ASR systems by adding perturbations to benign speech signals. Although an adversarial example and the original benign wave are indistinguishable to humans, the former is transcribed as a malicious target sentence by ASR systems. Several methods have been proposed to generate audio adversarial examples and feed them directly into the ASR system (over-line). Furthermore, many researchers have demonstrated the feasibility of robust physical audio adversarial examples(over-air). To defen…
Adversarial attacks pose a threat to deep learning models. However, research on adversarial detection methods, especially in the multi-modal domain, is very limited. In this work, we propose an efficient and straightforward detection method based on the temporal correlation between audio and video streams. The main idea is that the correlation between audio and video in adversarial examples will be lower than benign examples due to added adversarial noise. We use the synchronisation confidence score as a proxy for audiovisual correlation and based on it we can detect adversarial attacks. To th…
We propose an automatic detection method of Alzheimer's diseases using a gated convolutional neural network (GCNN) from speech data. This GCNN can be trained with a relatively small amount of data and can capture the temporal information in audio paralinguistic features. Since it does not utilize any linguistic features, it can be easily applied to any languages. We evaluated our method using Pitt Corpus. The proposed method achieved the accuracy of 73.6%, which is better than the conventional sequential minimal optimization (SMO) by 7.6 points.

Many effective attempts have been made for fake audio detection. However, they can only provide detection results but no countermeasures to curb this harm. For many related practical applications, what model or algorithm generated the fake audio also is needed. Therefore, We propose a new problem for detecting vocoder fingerprints of fake audio. Experiments are conducted on the datasets synthesized by eight state-of-the-art vocoders. We have preliminarily explored the features and model architectures. The t-SNE visualization shows that different vocoders generate distinct vocoder fingerprints.
Automatic speaker verification systems are vulnerable to audio replay attacks which bypass security by replaying recordings of authorized speakers. Replay attack detection (RA) detection systems built upon Residual Neural Networks (ResNet)s have yielded astonishing results on the public benchmark ASVspoof 2019 Physical Access challenge. With most teams using fine-tuned feature extraction pipelines and model architectures, the generalizability of such systems remains questionable though. In this work, we analyse the effect of discriminative feature learning in a multi-task learning (MTL) settin…

This paper evaluates a wide range of audio-based deep learning frameworks applied to the breathing, cough, and speech sounds for detecting COVID-19. In general, the audio recording inputs are transformed into low-level spectrogram features, then they are fed into pre-trained deep learning models to extract high-level embedding features. Next, the dimension of these high-level embedding features are reduced before finetuning using Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LightGBM) as a back-end classification. Our experiments on the Second DiCOVA Challenge achieved the highest Area Under the Curve (AUC…
In this study, we concentrate on replacing the process of extracting hand-crafted acoustic feature with end-to-end DNN using complementary high-resolution spectrograms. As a result of advance in audio devices, typical characteristics of a replayed speech based on conventional knowledge alter or diminish in unknown replay configurations. Thus, it has become increasingly difficult to detect spoofed speech with a conventional knowledge-based approach. To detect unrevealed characteristics that reside in a replayed speech, we directly input spectrograms into an end-to-end DNN without knowledge-base…

Neural models enjoy widespread use across a variety of tasks and have grown to become crucial components of many industrial systems. Despite their effectiveness and extensive popularity, they are not without their exploitable flaws. Initially applied to computer vision systems, the generation of adversarial examples is a process in which seemingly imperceptible perturbations are made to an image, with the purpose of inducing a deep learning based classifier to misclassify the image. Due to recent trends in speech processing, this has become a noticeable issue in speech recognition models. In l…

Automatic speaker verification, like every other biometric system, is vulnerable to spoofing attacks. Using only a few minutes of recorded voice of a genuine client of a speaker verification system, attackers can develop a variety of spoofing attacks that might trick such systems. Detecting these attacks using the audio cues present in the recordings is an important challenge. Most existing spoofing detection systems depend on knowing the used spoofing technique. With this research, we aim at overcoming this limitation, by examining robust audio features, both traditional and those learned thr…

We find that CNN trained on log mel spectrogram achieves the best performance on Pornography-800 dataset. Our experiment results also show that log mel spectrogram allows better representations for the models to recognize pornographic sounds. Finally, to classify whole audio waveforms rather than segments, we employ voting …
Recent advances in artificial speech and audio technologies have improved the abilities of deep-fake operators to falsify media and spread malicious misinformation. Anyone with limited coding skills can use freely available speech synthesis tools to create convincing simulations of influential speakers' voices with the malicious intent to distort the original message. With the latest technology, malicious operators do not have to generate an entire audio clip; instead, they can insert a partial manipulation or a segment of synthetic speech into a genuine audio recording to change the entire co…

The past few years have witnessed the significant advances of speech synthesis and voice conversion technologies. However, such technologies can undermine the robustness of broadly implemented biometric identification models and can be harnessed by in-the-wild attackers for illegal uses. The ASVspoof challenge mainly focuses on synthesized audios by advanced speech synthesis and voice conversion models, and replay attacks. Recently, the first Audio Deep Synthesis Detection challenge (ADD 2022) extends the attack scenarios into more aspects. Also ADD 2022 is the first challenge to propose the p…
In authentication scenarios, applications of practical speaker verification systems usually require a person to read a dynamic authentication text. Previous studies played an audio adversarial example as a digital signal to perform physical attacks, which would be easily rejected by audio replay detection modules. This work shows that by playing our crafted adversarial perturbation as a separate source when the adversary is speaking, the practical speaker verification system will misjudge the adversary as a target speaker. A two-step algorithm is proposed to optimize the universal adversarial …

All existing databases of spoofed speech contain attack data that is spoofed in its entirety. In practice, it is entirely plausible that successful attacks can be mounted with utterances that are only partially spoofed. By definition, partially-spoofed utterances contain a mix of both spoofed and bona fide segments, which will likely degrade the performance of countermeasures trained with entirely spoofed utterances. This hypothesis raises the obvious question: 'Can we detect partially-spoofed audio?' This paper introduces a new database of partially-spoofed data, named PartialSpoof, to help a…

Audio processing models based on deep neural networks are susceptible to adversarial attacks even when the adversarial audio waveform is 99.9% similar to a benign sample. Given the wide application of DNN-based audio recognition systems, detecting the presence of adversarial examples is of high practical relevance. By applying anomalous pattern detection techniques in the activation space of these models, we show that 2 of the recent and current state-of-the-art adversarial attacks on audio processing systems systematically lead to higher-than-expected activation at some subset of nodes and we…

Deep generative modeling has the potential to cause significant harm to society. Recognizing this threat, a magnitude of research into detecting so-called "Deepfakes" has emerged. This research most often focuses on the image domain, while studies exploring generated audio signals have, so-far, been neglected. In this paper we make three key contributions to narrow this gap. First, we provide researchers with an introduction to common signal processing techniques used for analyzing audio signals. Second, we present a novel data set, for which we collected nine sample sets from five different n…
