The production of the $f_{0}(980)$ meson at high energies is not well understood. We investigate two different potential mechanisms for inclusive scalar meson production in the $k_t$-factorization approach: color-singlet gluon-gluon fusion and color evaporation model. The $γ^* γ^* \to f_0(980)$ form factor(s) can be constraint from the $f_0(980)$ radiative decay width. The $g^* g^* \to f_0(980)$ form factors are obtained by a replacement of $α_{\rm{em}}$ electromagnetic coupling constant by $α_{\rm{s}}$ strong coupling constant and appropriate color factors. The form factors for the two couplings are parametrized with a function motivated by recent results for scalar quarkonia. The differential cross sections are calculated in the $k_t$-factorization approach with modern unintegrated gluon distributions. Unlike for quarkonia it seems rather difficult to describe a preliminary ALICE data for inclusive production of $f_0(980)$ exclusively by the color singlet gluon-gluon fusion mechanism. Two different scenarios for flavor structure of $f_0(980)$ are considered in this context. We consider also mechanism of fusion of quark-antiquark associated with soft gluon emission in a phenomenological color evaporation model (CEM) used sometimes for quarkonium production. Here we use $k_t$-factorization version of CEM to include higher-order contributions. In addition, for comparison we consider also NLO collinear approach with $q \bar{q} q$ and $q \bar{q} g$ color octet partonic final states. Both approaches lead to a similar result. However, very large probabilities are required to describe the preliminary ALICE data. The pomeron-pomeron fusion mechanism is also discussed and results are quantified.
The precise mechanism for production of quarkonium at hadron colliders is still an open question. Within non-relativistic quantum chromodynamics, quarkonium production cross sections can be factorized into short-distance, perturbative contributions and universal, non-perturbative, long-distance matrix elements, and then summed over quantum numbers of the heavy quark pair. In principle, at short-distances, the heavy quark pair can be either in a color-singlet or color-octet state, and it is desirable to establish the relative contributions to compare with data and to make predictions in differe…
We study the Singlet-Doublet dark matter model in the regime of feeble couplings, where the dark matter abundance is obtained via the freeze-in mechanism. As a consequence of the small couplings, the heavier particles in the model are long-lived with decay length at typical scales of collider experiments. We analyse the collider signatures of the model, characterised by displaced $h$ and $Z$ bosons plus missing momentum, employing current LHC searches for displaced vertices and missing energy to significantly constrain the parameter space of the model. We also take into account the cosmologica…
We consider an extension of the standard model in which a singlet fermionic particle, to serve as cold dark matter, and a singlet Higgs are added. We perform a reanalysis on the free parameters. In particular, demanding a correct relic abundance of dark matter, we derive and plot the coupling of the singlet fermion with the singlet Higgs, $g_s$, versus the dark matter mass. We analytically compute the pair annihilation cross section of singlet fermionic dark matter into two photons. The thermally averaged of this cross section is calculated for wide range of energies and plotted versus dark ma…
We study the possible gravitational wave signal and the viability of baryogenesis arising from the electroweak phase transition in an extension of the Standard Model (SM) by a scalar singlet field without a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. We first analyze the velocity of the expanding true-vacuum bubbles during the phase transition, confirming our previous finding in the unbroken $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry scenario, where the bubble wall velocity can be computed from first principles only for weak transitions with strength parameters $α\lesssim 0.05$, and the Chapman-Jouguet velocity defines the maximum…
The cross section of χ_{cJ} hadroproduction is calculated in the k_t-factorization approach. We find a significant contribution of the χ_{c1} state due to non-applicability of the Landau-Yang theorem because of off-shell gluons. The results are in agreement with data and, in contrast to the collinear factorization, show a dominance of the color singlet part and a strong suppression of the color octet contribution. Our results could therefore lead to a solution of the longstanding controversy between the color singlet model and the color octet mechanism.
We study the correlation of top asymmetries that are sensitive to the different origin of (a new contribution to) the total asymmetry: loop- or tree-level origins. We find that both the size and sign of the correlation between total and $t\bar{t}j$ inclusive asymmetries are inherently different depending on the origin. We demonstrate the correlation by using the color-singlet $Z^\prime$ and the pure axigluon taken as representative models of loop- and tree-induced total asymmetries. We calculate the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the $Z^\prime$ and perform Monte-Carlo event generatio…
We investigate the differences between the NLO evolution kernels in the Curci-Furmanski-Petronzio (CFP) and Monte Carlo (MC) factorization schemes for the non-singlet case. We show the origin of these differences and present them explicitly. We examine the influence of the choice of the factorization scale in the MC scheme (given by the upper phase space limit) on the evolution kernels in this scheme.
In the spirit of Mueller-Navelet dijet production, we propose and study the inclusive production of a forward $J/ψ$ and a very backward jet at the LHC as an observable to reveal high-energy resummation effects à la BFKL. We obtain several predictions, which are based on the various mechanisms discussed in the literature to describe the production of the $J/ψ$, namely, NRQCD singlet and octet contributions, and the color evaporation model.
The measurement of the inelastic photoproduction of charmonium at HERA seems to have ignited a new charmonium crisis. The (already discredited) color singlet model fits the data for large charmonium energy fraction z, where the NRQCD model qualitatively fails. We here point out that by the straightforward inclusion of color singlet and octet processes in the soft color (color evaporation) scheme, the HERA data can be accommodated for all z. We anticipate that the color singlet model will fail at low z, as it does in hadroproduction.
We propose and study the inclusive production of a forward $J/ψ$ and a very backward jet at the LHC as an observable to reveal high-energy resummation effects à la BFKL. Our different predictions are based on the various existing mechanisms to describe the production of the $J/ψ$, namely, NRQCD singlet and octet contributions, and the color evaporation model.
Quantum fluctuations of gravitational field with respect to the ADD braneworld background turns out to be large enough spoiling the TeV scale physics as well. In view of this observation it becomes important to look for some protecting mechanism. The most natural such mechanism in the case of braneworld model with compactified extra dimensions can be the shape moduli of extra space. Quantum fluctuations of braneworld background affect significantly the production as well as evaporation of mini black holes studied very actively during the las few years. The enormous amplification of quantum flu…
I describe the NRQCD factorization approach to the inclusive production of heavy quarkonium, contrasting it with the color-singlet and color evaporation models. These approaches differ dramatically in their assumptions about the roles played by color and spin in the production process. They also differ dramatically in their predictions for the production of charmonium at large transverse momentum.
The purely electroweak process $qq\to qqZ$ (via $t$-channel $γ/Z$ or $W$ exchange) provides a copious and fairly clean source of color-singlet exchange events in $pp$ collisions at the LHC. A judicious choice of phase-space region allows the suppression of QCD backgrounds to the level of the signal. The color-singlet-exchange signal can be distinguished from QCD backgrounds by the radiation patterns of additional minijets in individual events. A rapidity-gap trigger at the minijet level substantially enhances the signal versus the background. Analogous features of weak boson scattering events …
We estimate transverse single spin asymmetry (TSSA) in electroproduction of $J/ψ$ for J-Lab and EIC energies. We present estimates of TSSAs in $J/ψ$ production within generalized parton model (GPM) using recent parametrizations of gluon Sivers function (GSF) and compare the results obtained using color singlet model (CSM) with those obtained using color evaporation model (CEM) of quarkonium production.
We present calculations of heavy quark and quarkonium production at CERN LEP2 in the k_T-factorization QCD approach. Both direct and resolved photon contribution are taken into account. The conservative error analisys is performed. The unintegrated gluon distribution in the photon is taken from the full CCFM evolution equation. The traditional color-singlet mechanism to describe non-perturbative transition of heavy quark pair into a final quarkonium is used. Our analisys covers polarization properties of heavy quarkonia at moderate and large transverse momenta. We find that the total and diffe…
It is shown that the nuclear shadowing of charmonium due to the modification of the nuclear parton distribution is similar in the factorization approach based on non relativistic QCD and in the color evaporation model. In the first model, a separate study of the color octet and color singlet contributions to the yields of the various charmonium states as well as the contributions of these states to the total $J/Ψ$ production is performed. It is found a clear $x_F$ dependence of these contributions which can reproduce experimental data for moderate $x_F$.
Hawking evaporation of primordial black holes (PBH) with masses ranging from $\sim 10^{-1}$ to $\sim 10^9$ g can generate the whole observed dark matter (DM) relic density. However, a second DM production mechanism, like freeze-out or freeze-in, could have also been active in the early universe. Here we study the interplay of these mechanisms, focusing on the scenario where PBHs dominate the energy density of the universe, leading to a nonstandard cosmological era. For concreteness, we use the singlet scalar DM model as an example for this analysis.
We study the production of heavy quarkonium states in high energy proton-nucleus collisions. Following earlier work of Blaizot, Fujii, Gelis, and Venugopalan, we systematically include both small $x$ evolution and multiple scattering effects on heavy quark pair production within the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) framework. We obtain for the first time expressions in the Non-Relativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization formalism for heavy quarkonium differential cross sections as a function of transverse momentum and rapidity. We observe that the production of color singlet heavy quark pairs is sensit…
We argue that the large suppression of the $ψ(2S)$ inclusive cross-section relative to the $J/ψ$ inclusive cross-section in proton-nucleus (p+A) collisions can be attributed to factorization breaking effects in the formation of quarkonium. These factorization breaking effects arise from soft color exchanges between charm-anticharm pairs undergoing hadronization and comoving partons that are long-lived on time scales of quarkonium formation. We compute the short distance pair production of heavy quarks in the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) effective field theory and employ an improved Color Evapo…
In scenarios with extra dimensions and TeV-scale quantum gravity, black holes are expected to be produced copiously at center-of-mass energies above the fundamental Planck scale. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) may thus turn into a factory of black holes, at which their production and evaporation may be studied in detail. But even before the LHC starts operating, the Pierre Auger Observatory for cosmic rays, presently under construction, has an opportunity to search for black hole signatures. Black hole production in the scattering of ultrahigh energy cosmic neutrinos on nucleons in the atmosp…
We investigate and compare two simple models of dark matter (DM): a vector and a scalar DM model. Both models require the presence of two physical Higgs bosons $h_1$ and $h_2$ which come from mixed components of the standard Higgs doublet $H$ and a complex singlet $S$. In the Vector model, the extra $U(1)$ symmetry is spontaneously broken by the vacuum of the complex field $S$. This leads to a massive gauge boson $X^μ$ that is a DM candidate stabilized by the dark charge conjugation symmetry $S \to S^*$, $X^μ\to -X^μ$. On the other hand, in the Scalar model the gauge group remains the standard…
I discuss issues related to charmonium production, in view of physics possibilities at a 15 ... 30 GeV continuous beam electron facility. High energy photo- and hadroproduction of heavy quarkonia presents several challenges to QCD models concerning cross sections, polarization and nuclear target dependence. Theoretical approaches based on color evaporation as well as on color singlet and color octet mechanisms have met with both successes and failures, indicating that charmonium production is a sensitive probe of color dynamics. Experiments close to charm kinematic threshold will be sensitive …
We compute and compare the effective potential and phase structure for the quark-meson model in an extended mean-field approximation (e-MFA) when vacuum one loop quark fluctuations are included and the model parameters are fixed using different renormalization prescriptions. When the quark one loop vacuum divergence is regularized under the minimal subtraction scheme, the model setting of the parameter fixing using the curvature masses of the scalar and pseudo-scalar mesons, has been termed as the quark-meson model with the vacuum term(QMVT).However, this prescription becomes inconsistent when we…
We re-analyse the associated production of a prompt J/psi and a W boson in pp collisions at the LHC following the results of the ATLAS Collaboration. We perform the first study of the Single-Parton-Scattering (SPS) contributions at the Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) in alpha_s in the Colour-Evaporation Model (CEM), an approach based on the quark-hadron-duality. Our study provides clear indications for Double-Parton-Scattering (DPS) contributions, in particular at low transverse momenta, since our SPS CEM evaluation, which can be viewed as a conservative upper limit of the SPS yields, falls short …
I compute the leading color-octet contributions to the process $γ+ p \to J/ψ+ γ(+ X)$ within the non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization formalism. In the color-singlet model, $J/ψ+ γ$ can only be produced when the photon interacts through its structure function, while the color-octet mechanism allows for production of $J/ψ+ γ$ via direct photon-gluon fusion. Resolved photon processes can be easily be distinguished from direct photon processes by examining the fraction of the incident photon energy carried away by the $J/ψ$ in the event. Therefore, this process provides a conclusive test of…
