Hydrodynamical simulations of planet-disk interactions suggest that planets may be responsible for a number of the sub-structures frequently observed in disks in both scattered light and dust thermal emission. Despite the ubiquity of these features, direct evidence of planets embedded in disks and of the specific interaction features like spiral arms within planetary gaps still remain rare. In this study we discuss recent observational results in the context of hydrodynamical simulations in order to infer the properties of a putative embedded planet in the cavity of a transition disk. We imaged the transition disk SR 21 in H-band in scattered light with SPHERE/IRDIS and in thermal dust emission with ALMA band 3 (3mm) observations at a spatial resolution of 0.1". We combine these datasets with existing band 9 (430um) and band 7 (870um) ALMA continuum data. The Band 3 continuum data reveals a large cavity and a bright ring peaking at 53 au strongly suggestive of dust trapping. The ring shows a pronounced azimuthal asymmetry, with a bright region in the north-west that we interpret as a dust over-density. A similarly-asymmetric ring is revealed at the same location in polarized scattered light, in addition to a set of bright spirals inside the mm cavity and a fainter spiral bridging the gap to the outer ring. These features are consistent with a number of previous hydrodynamical models of planet-disk interactions, and suggest the presence of a ~1 MJup planet at 44 au and PA=11°. This makes SR21 the first disk showing spiral arms inside the mm cavity, as well as one for which the location of a putative planet can be precisely inferred. With the location of a possible planet being well-constrained by observations, it is an ideal candidate for follow-up observations to search for direct evidence of a planetary companion still embedded in its disk.
Spiral arms in protoplanetary discs are thought to be linked to the presence of companions. We test the hypothesis that the double spiral arm morphology observed in the transition disc MWC 758 can be generated by an $\approx 10$ M$_{\rm Jup}$ companion on an eccentric orbit internal to the spiral arms. Previous studies on MWC 758 have assumed an external companion. We compare simulated observations from three dimensional hydrodynamics simulations of disc-companion interaction to scattered light, infrared and CO molecular line observations, taking into account observational biases. The inner co…
We present an analysis of ALMA 1.25 millimeter continuum observations of spiral structures in three protoplanetary disks from the Disk Substructures at High Angular Resolution Project. The disks around Elias 27, IM Lup, and WaOph 6 were observed at a resolution of $\sim40-60$ mas ($\sim6-7$ au). All three disks feature $m=2$ spiral patterns in conjunction with annular substructures. Gas kinematics established by $^{12}$CO $J=2-1$ observations indicate that the continuum spiral arms are trailing. The arm-interarm intensity contrasts are modest, typically less than 3. The Elias 27 spiral pattern…
We present 3D hydrodynamical models of the HD142527 protoplanetary disc, a bright and well studied disc that shows spirals and shadows in scattered light around a 100 au gas cavity, a large horseshoe dust structure in mm continuum emission, together with mysterious fast radial flows and streamers seen in gas kinematics. By considering several possible orbits consistent with the observed arc, we show that all of the main observational features can be explained by one mechanism - the interaction between the disc and the observed binary companion. We find that the spirals, shadows and horseshoe a…
We present ALMA observations of the $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, C$^{18}$O J=2-1 transitions and the 1.3\,mm continuum emission for the circumbinary disc around HD 142527, at an angular resolution of $\approx$\,0\farcs3. We observe multiple spiral structures in intensity, velocity and velocity dispersion for the $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO gas tracers. A newly detected $^{12}$CO spiral originates from the dust horseshoe, and is rotating at super-Keplerian velocity or vertically ascending, whilst the inter-spiral gas is rotating at sub-Keplerian velocities. This new spiral possibly connects to a previousl…
[Full abstract in the paper] In recent years, protoplanetary disks with spiral structures have been detected in scattered light, millimeter continuum, and CO gas emission. The mechanisms causing these structures are still under debate. A popular scenario to drive the spiral arms is the one of a planet perturbing the material in the disk. However, if the disk is massive, gravitational instability is usually the favored explanation. Multiwavelength studies could be helpful to distinguish between the two scenarios. So far, only a handful of disks with spiral arms have been observed in both scatte…
Spatially resolved structures in protoplanetary disks hint at unseen planets. Previous imaging observations of the transitional disk around MWC 758 revealed an inner cavity, a ring-like outer disk, emission clumps, and spiral arms, all possibly generated by companions. We present ALMA dust continuum observations of MWC 758 at 0.87 millimeter (mm) wavelength with 43$\times$39 mas angular resolution (6.9$\times$6.2 AU) and 20 $μ$Jy beam$^{-1}$ rms. The central sub-mm emission cavity is revealed to be eccentric; once deprojected, its outer edge can be well-fitted by an ellipse with an eccentricit…
Context. Transition disks (TDs) are circumstellar disks with inner regions highly depleted in dust. TDs are observed in a small fraction of disk-bearing objects at ages of 1-10 Myr. They are important laboratories to study evolutionary effects in disks, from photoevaporation to planet-disk interactions. Aims. We report the discovery of a large inner dust-empty region in the disk around the very low mass star CIDA 1 (M$_{\star} \sim 0.1-0.2$ M$_{\odot}$). Methods. We used ALMA continuum observations at 887$μ$m, which provide a spatial resolution of $0."21\times0."12$ ($\sim$15$\times$8 au in ra…
In this work we demonstrate that the inner spiral structure observed in AB Aurigae can be created by a binary star orbiting inside the dust cavity. We find that a companion with a mass-ratio of 0.25, semi-major axis of 40 au, eccentricity of 0.5, and inclination of 90° produces gaseous spirals closely matching the ones observed in $^{12}$CO (2-1) line emission. Based on dust dynamics in circumbinary discs (Poblete, Cuello, and Cuadra 2019), we constrain the inclination of the binary with respect to the circumbinary disc to range between 60° and 90°. We predict that the stellar companion is loc…
Gravitational forces are expected to excite spiral density waves in protoplanetary disks, disks of gas and dust orbiting young stars. However, previous observations that showed spiral structure were not able to probe disk midplanes, where most of the mass is concentrated and where planet formation takes place. Using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array we detected a pair of trailing symmetric spiral arms in the protoplanetary disk surrounding the young star Elias 2-27. The arms extend to the disk outer regions and can be traced down to the midplane. These millimeter-wave observatio…
In recent years spiral structures have been seen in scattered light observations and signs of vortices in millimeter images of protoplanetary disks, both probably linked with the presence of planets. We present ALMA Band 7 (335 GHz or 0.89 mm) continuum observations of the transition disk HD135344B at unprecedented spatial resolution of 0.16", using superuniform weighting. The data show that the asymmetric millimeter dust ring seen in previous work actually consists of an inner ring and an outer asymmetric structure. The outer feature is cospatial with the end of one of the spiral arms seen in…
We present Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) observations at an angular resolution of 0.1-0.2" of the disk surrounding the young Herbig Ae star MWC 758. The data consist of images of the dust continuum emission recorded at 0.88 millimeter, as well as images of the 13CO and C18O J = 3-2 emission lines. The dust continuum emission is characterized by a large cavity of roughly 40 au in radius which might contain a mildly inner warped disk. The outer disk features two bright emission clumps at radii of about 47 and 82 au that present azimuthal extensions and form a double-ring structure. The c…
Dust grains emit intrinsic polarized emission if they are elongated and aligned in the same direction. The direction of the grain alignment is determined by external forces, such as magnetic fields, radiation, and gas flow against the dust grains. In this letter, we apply the concept of the grain alignment by gas flow, which is called mechanical alignment, to the situation of a protoplanetary disk. We assume that grains have a certain helicity, which results in the alignment with the minor axis parallel to the grain velocity against the ambient disk gas and discuss the morphology of polarizati…
We present the first images of the transition disk around the close binary system HD 34700A in polarized scattered light using the Gemini Planet Imager instrument on Gemini South. The J and H band images reveal multiple spiral-arm structures outside a large (R = 0.49" = 175 au) cavity along with a bluish spiral structure inside the cavity. The cavity wall shows a strong discontinuity and we clearly see significant non-azimuthal polarization Uphi consistent with multiple scattering within a disk at an inferred inclination ~42deg. Radiative transfer modeling along with a new Gaia distance sugges…
Companions at sub-arcsecond separation from young stars are difficult to image. However their presence can be inferred from the perturbations they create in the dust and gas of protoplanetary disks. Here we present a new interpretation of SPHERE polarised observations that reveal the previously detected inner spiral in the disk of HD 100546. The spiral coincides with a newly detected 12CO inner spiral and the previously reported CO emission Doppler-flip, which has been interpreted as the signature of an embedded protoplanet. Comparisons with hydrodynamical models indicate that this Doppler-fli…
[abridged] We present new scattered light and millimeter observations of the protoplanetary disk around LkH$α\,330$, using SPHERE/VLT and ALMA, respectively. The scattered-light SPHERE observations reveal an asymmetric ring at around 45au from the star in addition to two spiral arms with similar radial launching points at around 90au. The millimeter observations from ALMA (resolution of 0.06''$\times$0.04'') mainly show an asymmetric ring located at 110au from the star. In addition to this asymmetry, there are two faint symmetric rings at 60au and 200au. The $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O…
Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) stars have been classified into Group I or Group II, which were initially thought to be flared and flat disks, respectively. Several Group I sources have been shown to have large gaps, suggesting ongoing planet formation, while no large gaps have been found in the disks of Group II sources. We analyzed the disk around the Group II source, HD 142666, using irradiated accretion disk modeling of the broad-band spectral energy distribution along with the 1.3 millimeter spatial brightness distribution traced by Atacama Large Millimeter and Submillimeter Array (ALMA) observation…
We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of a protoplanetary disk around the T Tauri star Sz~84 and analyses of the structures of the inner cavity in the central region of the dust disk. Sz~84's spectral energy distribution (SED) has been known to exhibit negligible infrared excess at $λ\lesssim$10~$μ$m due to the disk's cavity structure. Analyses of the observed visibilities of dust continuum at 1.3~mm and the SED indicate that the size of the cavity in the disk of large (millimeter size) dust grains is 8~au in radius and that in the disk of small (sub-micro…
The study of spiral structures in protoplanetary disks is of great importance for understanding of processes in the disks, including planet formation. Bright spiral arms were detected in the disk of young star CQ Tau by Uyama et al. (2020) in H and L bands. The spiral arms are located inside the gap in millimeter size dust, recovered earlier using ALMA observations (Ubeira Gabellini et al. 2019). To explain the gap, Ubeira Gabellini et al. (2019) proposed the existence of a planet with the semimajor axis of 20 AU. We obtained multiepoch observations of a spiral feature in the circumstellar env…
The variety of observed protoplanetary disks in polarimetric light motivates a taxonomical study to constrain their evolution and establish the current framework of this type of observations. We classified 58 disks with available polarimetric observations into six major categories (Ring, Spiral, Giant, Rim, Faint, and Small disks) based on their appearance in scattered light. We re-calculated the stellar and disk properties from the newly available GAIA DR2 and related these properties with the disk categories. More than a half of our sample shows disk sub-structures. For the remaining sources…
We have analyzed the HCO+ (1-0) data of the Class I-II protostar, HL Tau, obtained from the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array long baseline campaign. We generated the HCO+ image cube at an angular resolution of ~0.07 (~10 AU), and performed azimuthal averaging on the image cube to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio and measure the radial profile of the HCO+ integrated intensity. Two gaps at radii of ~28 AU and ~69 AU and a central cavity are identified in the radial intensity profile. The inner HCO+ gap is coincident with the millimeter continuum gap at a radius of 32 AU. The outer H…
We analyze the dust morphology of 29 transition disks (TDs) observed with ALMA at (sub-) millimeter-emission. We perform the analysis in the visibility plane to characterize the total flux, cavity size, and shape of the ring-like structure. First, we found that the $M_{\rm{dust}}-M_\star$ relation is much flatter for TDs than the observed trends from samples of class II sources in different star forming regions. This relation demonstrates that cavities open in high (dust) mass disks, independent of the stellar mass. The flatness of this relation contradicts the idea that TDs are a more evolved…

The disk surrounding SAO 206462, an 8 Myr-old Herbig Ae star, has recently been reported to exhibit spiral arms, an asymmetric dust continuum, and a dust-depleted inner cavity. By carrying out two-dimensional, two-fluid hydrodynamic calculations, we find that a planetary-mass companion located at the outer disk could be responsible for these observed structures. In this model, the planet excites primary and secondary arms interior to its orbit. It also carves a gap and generates a local pressure bump at the inner gap edge where a vortex forms through Rossby wave instability. The vortex traps r…
We report ALMA Cycle 2 observations of 230 GHz (1.3 mm) dust continuum emission, and $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O J = 2-1 line emission, from the Upper Scorpius transitional disk [PZ99] J160421.7-213028, with an angular resolution of ~0".25 (35 AU). Armed with these data and existing H-band scattered light observations, we measure the size and depth of the disk's central cavity, and the sharpness of its outer edge, in three components: sub-$μ$m-sized "small" dust traced by scattered light, millimeter-sized "big" dust traced by the millimeter continuum, and gas traced by line emission. B…
We use two-dimensional Fourier transformation to measure the pitch angle ($φ$) of the dominant spiral Fourier mode of well-defined spiral arms in 13 protoplanetary disks, making use of near-infrared scattered-light images of AB Aur, SAO 206462, MWC 758, V1247 Ori, HD 142527, DZ Cha, LkH$α$ 330, and HD 100453, and ALMA millimeter continuum images of Elias 2-27, IM Lup, AS 205, and HT Lup. We find that the measured pitch angle correlates strongly with disk mass ($M_{D}$), such that more massive protoplanetary disks have smaller pitch angles, following $|φ| = -(7.8\pm1.7)\log(M_{D}/M_{\odot})+(2.…
Some circumstellar disks are observed to show prominent spiral arms in infrared scattered light or (sub-)millimeter dust continuum. The spirals might be formed from self-gravity, shadows, or planet-disk interactions. Recently, it was hypothesized that massive vortices can drive spiral arms in protoplanetary disks in a way analogous to planets. In this paper, we study the basic properties of vortex-driven spirals by the Rossby Wave Instability in 2D hydrodynamics simulations. We study how the surface density contrast, the number, and the shape of vortex-driven spirals depend on the properties o…
Millimeter observations of disks around young stars reveal substructures indicative of gas pressure traps that may aid grain growth and planet formation. We present Submillimeter Array observations of HD 34700- two Herbig Ae stars in a close binary system (Aa/Ab, $\sim$0.25 AU), surrounded by a disk presenting a large cavity and spiral arms seen in scattered light, and two distant, lower mass companions. These observations include 1.3 mm continuum emission and the $^{12}$CO 2-1 line at $\sim0.5$" (178 AU) resolution. They resolve a prominent azimuthal asymmetry in the continuum, and Keplerian …
Context. Despite the recent discovery of spiral-shaped features in protoplanetary discs in the near-infrared and millimetric wavelengths, there is still an active discussion to understand how they formed. In fact, the spiral waves observed in discs around young stars can be due to different physical mechanisms: planet/companion torques, gravitational perturbations or illumination effects. Aims. We study the spirals formed in the gaseous phase due to two diametrically opposed shadows cast at fixed disc locations. The shadows are created by an inclined non-precessing disc inside the cavity, whic…
Spiral arms are distinctive features of many circumstellar disks, observed in scattered light, which traces the disk surface, millimeter dust emission, which probes the disk midplane, as well as molecular emission. The two leading explanations for spirals are wakes generated by a massive planet and the density waves excited by disk self-gravity. We use stratified 3D hydrodynamic shearing-box simulations including dust particles and disk self-gravity to investigate how gas and dust spirals in a self-gravitating disk depend on the simulation size, the cooling efficiency, and the aerodynamics pro…
We present sensitive and high angular resolution ($\sim$0.2-0.3$''$) (sub)millimeter (230 and 345 GHz) continuum and CO(2$-$1)/CO(3$-$2) line archive observations of the disk star system in UX Tauri carried out with ALMA (The Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array). These observations reveal the gas and dusty disk surrounding the young star UX Tauri A with a large signal-to-noise ratio ($>$400 in the continuum and $>$50 in the line), and for the first time is detected the molecular gas emission associated with the disk of UX Tauri C (with a size for the disk of $<$56 au). No (sub)millime…

DR Tau has been noted for its unusually high variability in comparison with other T Tauri stars. Although it is one of the most extensively studied pre-main sequence stars, observations with millimeter interferometry have so far been relatively limited. We present NOEMA images of $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, C$^{18}$O, SO, DCO$^+$, and H$_2$CO toward DR Tau at a resolution of $\sim0.5''$ ($\sim100$ au). In addition to the protoplanetary disk, CO emission reveals an envelope, a faint asymmetric outflow, and a spiral arm with a clump. The $\sim1200$ au extent of the CO arm far exceeds that of the spira…
Asymmetrical features in disks provide indirect evidences of embedded objects, such as planets. Observed with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), the circumstellar disk in MWC 758 traced with thermal dust continuum emission at wavelengths of 0.9 mm with an angular resolution up to 0.1" (15 au) exhibits an asymmetrical dust ring with additional features. In order to analyze the structures azimuthally and radially, we split the dust ring into small segments in azimuth. For each segment, we fit two-Gaussian functions to the radial intensity profile. The obtained best-fit para…
We carry out three dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations to study the impact of planet-disc interactions on a gravitationally unstable protoplanetary disc. We find that the impact of a planet on the disc's evolution can be described by three scenarios. If the planet is sufficiently massive, the spiral wakes generated by the planet dominate the evolution of the disc and gravitational instabilities are completely suppressed. If the planet's mass is too small, then gravitational instabilities are unaffected. If the planet's mass lies between these extremes, gravitational instabi…
The development of perturbations in the circumstellar disks of pre-main-sequence stars caused by clumpy accretion was investigated. Here we perform 3D hydrodynamical smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations of disks perturbed by a recent clump accretion event. These simulations are further explored by radiative transfer calculations to quantify the observational appearance of such disks. It was shown that the density waves in the disks were formed at the fall of the clump. After several revolutions they can transform into spirals and ring structures. Their images in millimeter wavelengths a…
We present optical and near-infrared high contrast images of the transitional disk HD 100546 taken with the Magellan Adaptive Optics system (MagAO) and the Gemini Planet Imager (GPI). GPI data include both polarized intensity and total intensity imagery, and MagAO data are taken in Simultaneous Differential Imaging mode at Hα. The new GPI H -band total intensity data represent a significant enhancement in sensitivity and field rotation compared to previous data sets and enable a detailed exploration of substructure in the disk. The data are processed with a variety of differential imaging tech…
The concentric gaps and rings commonly observed in protoplanetary disks in millimeter continuum emission have lent the impression that planet formation generally proceeds within orderly, isolated systems. While deep observations of spatially resolved molecular emission have been comparatively limited, they are increasingly suggesting that some disks interact with their surroundings while planet formation is underway. We present an analysis of complex features identified around GM Aur in $^{12}$CO $J=2-1$ images at a spatial resolution of $\sim40$ au. In addition to a Keplerian disk extending t…

Understanding the diversity of planets requires to study the morphology and the physical conditions in the protoplanetary disks in which they form. We observed and spatially resolved the disk around the ~10 Myr old protoplanetary disk HD 100453 in polarized scattered light with SPHERE/VLT at optical and near-infrared wavelengths, reaching an angular resolution of ~0.02", and an inner working angle of ~0.09". We detect polarized scattered light up to ~0.42" (~48 au) and detect a cavity, a rim with azimuthal brightness variations at an inclination of 38 degrees, two shadows and two symmetric spi…
Young planets are expected to cause perturbations in protostellar disks that may be used to infer their presence. Clear detection of still-forming planets embedded within gas-rich disks is rare. HD 169142 is a very young Herbig Ae-Be star surrounded by a pre-transitional disk, composed of at least three rings. While claims of sub-stellar objects around this star have been made previously, follow-up studies remain inconclusive. We used SPHERE at ESO VLT to obtain a sequence of high-contrast images of the immediate surroundings of this star over about three years. This enables a photometric and …
We report new Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) Band 3 observations at 2.75 mm of the TD around SR 24S with an angular resolution of $\sim$0.11''$\times$ 0.09'' and a peak signal-to-noise ratio of $\sim24$. We detect an inner disk and a mostly symmetric ring-like structure that peaks at $\sim$0.32'', that is $\sim$37 au at a distance of $\sim$114.4 pc. The full width at half maximum of this ring is $\sim$28 au. We analyze the observed structures by fitting the dust continuum visibilities using different models for the intensity profile, and compare with previous ALMA observa…
We analyzed the archival data of the $^{13}\mathrm{CO}$ and $\mathrm{C}^{18}\mathrm{O}$ $J=3-2$ emission lines in the protoplanetary disk around MWC 758 obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array to discuss possible planet-disk interaction and non-Keplerian motion in the disk. We performed fitting of a Keplerian disk model to the observational data and measured the velocity deviations from the Keplerian rotation. We found significant velocity deviations around the inner cavity in the MWC 758 disk. We examined several possibilities that may cause the velocity deviations, suc…
Context: The complex system HD 100453 AB with a ring-like circumprimary disk and two spiral arms, one of which is pointing to the secondary, is a good laboratory to test spiral formation theories. Aims: To quantify the interaction of HD 100453 B with the circumprimary disk. Methods: Using ALMA band 6 dust continuum and CO isotopologue observations we study the HD 100453 AB system with a spatial resolution of 0.09" x 0.17" at 234 GHz. We use SPH simulations and orbital fitting to investigate the tidal influence of the companion on the disk. Results: We resolve the continuum emission around HD 1…
We have observed the Class I protostar TMC-1A in the Taurus molecular cloud using the Submillimeter Array (SMA) and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in the linearly polarized 1.3 mm continuum emission at angular resolutions of ~3" and ~0.3", respectively. The ALMA observations also include CO, 13CO, and C18O J=2-1 spectral lines. The SMA observations trace magnetic fields on the 1000-au scale, the directions of which are neither parallel nor perpendicular to the outflow direction. Applying the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method to the SMA polarization angle dispersion, we …
Discovery of Small-Scale Spiral Structures in the Disk of SAO 206462 (HD 135344B): Implications for the Physical State of the Disk from Spiral Density Wave Theory
The evolution of circumbinary discs and planets is often studied using two-dimensional (2D) numerical simulations, although recent work suggests that 3D effects may significantly alter the structure of the inner cavity created by the binary. In this study, we present the results of 3D hydrodynamical simulations of circumbinary discs that orbit around analogues of the Kepler-16 and Kepler-34 systems, including the effect of stellar heating and radiative cooling on the thermal disc structure. We find that compared to their 2D counterparts, the structures of the cavities in 3D circumbinary disc m…
