Swapping text in scene images while preserving original fonts, colors, sizes and background textures is a challenging task due to the complex interplay between different factors. In this work, we present SwapText, a three-stage framework to transfer texts across scene images. First, a novel text swapping network is proposed to replace text labels only in the foreground image. Second, a background completion network is learned to reconstruct background images. Finally, the generated foreground image and background image are used to generate the word image by the fusion network. Using the proposing framework, we can manipulate the texts of the input images even with severe geometric distortion. Qualitative and quantitative results are presented on several scene text datasets, including regular and irregular text datasets. We conducted extensive experiments to prove the usefulness of our method such as image based text translation, text image synthesis, etc.

We apply style transfer on mesh reconstructions of indoor scenes. This enables VR applications like experiencing 3D environments painted in the style of a favorite artist. Style transfer typically operates on 2D images, making stylization of a mesh challenging. When optimized over a variety of poses, stylization patterns become stretched out and inconsistent in size. On the other hand, model-based 3D style transfer methods exist that allow stylization from a sparse set of images, but they require a network at inference time. To this end, we optimize an explicit texture for the reconstructed me…
Illumination effects in images, specifically cast shadows and shading, have been shown to decrease the performance of deep neural networks on a large number of vision-based detection, recognition and segmentation tasks in urban driving scenes. A key factor that contributes to this performance gap is the lack of `time-of-day' diversity within real, labeled datasets. There have been impressive advances in the realm of image to image translation in transferring previously unseen visual effects into a dataset, specifically in day to night translation. However, it is not easy to constrain what visu…
Style transfer is a problem of rendering image with some content in the style of another image, for example a family photo in the style of a painting of some famous artist. The drawback of classical style transfer algorithm is that it imposes style uniformly on all parts of the content image, which perturbs central objects on the content image, such as faces or text, and makes them unrecognizable. This work proposes a novel style transfer algorithm which automatically detects central objects on the content image, generates spatial importance mask and imposes style non-uniformly: central object…

This paper explores the possibilities of image style transfer applied to text maintaining the original transcriptions. Results on different text domains (scene text, machine printed text and handwritten text) and cross modal results demonstrate that this is feasible, and open different research lines. Furthermore, two architectures for selective style transfer, which means transferring style to only desired image pixels, are proposed. Finally, scene text selective style transfer is evaluated as a data augmentation technique to expand scene text detection datasets, resulting in a boost of text …

We address the new problem of language-guided semantic style transfer of 3D indoor scenes. The input is a 3D indoor scene mesh and several phrases that describe the target scene. Firstly, 3D vertex coordinates are mapped to RGB residues by a multi-layer perceptron. Secondly, colored 3D meshes are differentiablly rendered into 2D images, via a viewpoint sampling strategy tailored for indoor scenes. Thirdly, rendered 2D images are compared to phrases, via pre-trained vision-language models. Lastly, errors are back-propagated to the multi-layer perceptron to update vertex colors corresponding to …

In this study, we explore building a two-stage framework for enabling users to directly manipulate high-level attributes of a natural scene. The key to our approach is a deep generative network which can hallucinate images of a scene as if they were taken at a different season (e.g. during winter), weather condition (e.g. in a cloudy day) or time of the day (e.g. at sunset). Once the scene is hallucinated with the given attributes, the corresponding look is then transferred to the input image while preserving the semantic details intact, giving a photo-realistic manipulation result. As the pro…

This note presents an extension to the neural artistic style transfer algorithm (Gatys et al.). The original algorithm transforms an image to have the style of another given image. For example, a photograph can be transformed to have the style of a famous painting. Here we address a potential shortcoming of the original method: the algorithm transfers the colors of the original painting, which can alter the appearance of the scene in undesirable ways. We describe simple linear methods for transferring style while preserving colors.
Deep motion forecasting models have achieved great success when trained on a massive amount of data. Yet, they often perform poorly when training data is limited. To address this challenge, we propose a transfer learning approach for efficiently adapting pre-trained forecasting models to new domains, such as unseen agent types and scene contexts. Unlike the conventional fine-tuning approach that updates the whole encoder, our main idea is to reduce the amount of tunable parameters that can precisely account for the target domain-specific motion style. To this end, we introduce two components t…
3D scenes photorealistic stylization aims to generate photorealistic images from arbitrary novel views according to a given style image while ensuring consistency when rendering from different viewpoints. Some existing stylization methods with neural radiance fields can effectively predict stylized scenes by combining the features of the style image with multi-view images to train 3D scenes. However, these methods generate novel view images that contain objectionable artifacts. Besides, they cannot achieve universal photorealistic stylization for a 3D scene. Therefore, a styling image must ret…

Human video motion transfer has a wide range of applications in multimedia, computer vision and graphics. Recently, due to the rapid development of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), there has been significant progress in the field. However, almost all existing GAN-based works are prone to address the mapping from human motions to video scenes, with scene appearances are encoded individually in the trained models. Therefore, each trained model can only generate videos with a specific scene appearance, new models are required to be trained to generate new appearances. Besides, existing wor…

The transfer of a neural network (CNN) trained to recognize objects to the task of scene classification is considered. A Bag-of-Semantics (BoS) representation is first induced, by feeding scene image patches to the object CNN, and representing the scene image by the ensuing bag of posterior class probability vectors (semantic posteriors). The encoding of the BoS with a Fisher vector(FV) is then studied. A link is established between the FV of any probabilistic model and the Q-function of the expectation-maximization(EM) algorithm used to estimate its parameters by maximum likelihood. A network…

When given a single frame of the video, humans can not only interpret the content of the scene, but also they are able to forecast the near future. This ability is mostly driven by their rich prior knowledge about the visual world, both in terms of (i) the dynamics of moving agents, as well as (ii) the semantic of the scene. In this work we exploit the interplay between these two key elements to predict scene-specific motion patterns. First, we extract patch descriptors encoding the probability of moving to the adjacent patches, and the probability of being in that particular patch or changing…

Event recognition in still images is an intriguing problem and has potential for real applications. This paper addresses the problem of event recognition by proposing a convolutional neural network that exploits knowledge of objects and scenes for event classification (OS2E-CNN). Intuitively, it stands to reason that there exists a correlation among the concepts of objects, scenes, and events. We empirically demonstrate that the recognition of objects and scenes substantially contributes to the recognition of events. Meanwhile, we propose an iterative selection method to identify a subset of o…

Semantic annotations are vital for training models for object recognition, semantic segmentation or scene understanding. Unfortunately, pixelwise annotation of images at very large scale is labor-intensive and only little labeled data is available, particularly at instance level and for street scenes. In this paper, we propose to tackle this problem by lifting the semantic instance labeling task from 2D into 3D. Given reconstructions from stereo or laser data, we annotate static 3D scene elements with rough bounding primitives and develop a model which transfers this information into the image…

Accurate perception of the surrounding scene is helpful for robots to make reasonable judgments and behaviours. Therefore, developing effective scene representation and recognition methods are of significant importance in robotics. Currently, a large body of research focuses on developing novel auxiliary features and networks to improve indoor scene recognition ability. However, few of them focus on directly constructing object features and relations for indoor scene recognition. In this paper, we analyze the weaknesses of current methods and propose an Object-to-Scene (OTS) method, which extr…

Most indoor 3D scene reconstruction methods focus on recovering 3D geometry and scene layout. In this work, we go beyond this to propose PhotoScene, a framework that takes input image(s) of a scene along with approximately aligned CAD geometry (either reconstructed automatically or manually specified) and builds a photorealistic digital twin with high-quality materials and similar lighting. We model scene materials using procedural material graphs; such graphs represent photorealistic and resolution-independent materials. We optimize the parameters of these graphs and their texture scale and r…

Scene text recognition in low-resource Indian languages is challenging because of complexities like multiple scripts, fonts, text size, and orientations. In this work, we investigate the power of transfer learning for all the layers of deep scene text recognition networks from English to two common Indian languages. We perform experiments on the conventional CRNN model and STAR-Net to ensure generalisability. To study the effect of change in different scripts, we initially run our experiments on synthetic word images rendered using Unicode fonts. We show that the transfer of English models to …

Given a set of images of a scene, the re-rendering of this scene from novel views and lighting conditions is an important and challenging problem in Computer Vision and Graphics. On the one hand, most existing works in Computer Vision usually impose many assumptions regarding the image formation process, e.g. direct illumination and predefined materials, to make scene parameter estimation tractable. On the other hand, mature Computer Graphics tools allow modeling of complex photo-realistic light transport given all the scene parameters. Combining these approaches, we propose a method for scene…

This paper proposes a new method called Multimodal RNNs for RGB-D scene semantic segmentation. It is optimized to classify image pixels given two input sources: RGB color channels and Depth maps. It simultaneously performs training of two recurrent neural networks (RNNs) that are crossly connected through information transfer layers, which are learnt to adaptively extract relevant cross-modality features. Each RNN model learns its representations from its own previous hidden states and transferred patterns from the other RNNs previous hidden states; thus, both model-specific and crossmodality …
The goal of this work is to improve images of traffic scenes that are degraded by natural causes such as fog, rain and limited visibility during the night. For these applications, it is next to impossible to get pixel perfect pairs of the same scene, with and without the degrading conditions. This makes it unsuitable for conventional supervised learning approaches, however, it is easy to collect unpaired images of the scenes in a perfect and in a degraded condition. To enhance the images taken in a poor visibility condition, domain transfer models can be trained to transform an image from the …

Large-scale training data with high-quality annotations is critical for training semantic and instance segmentation models. Unfortunately, pixel-wise annotation is labor-intensive and costly, raising the demand for more efficient labeling strategies. In this work, we present a novel 3D-to-2D label transfer method, Panoptic NeRF, which aims for obtaining per-pixel 2D semantic and instance labels from easy-to-obtain coarse 3D bounding primitives. Our method utilizes NeRF as a differentiable tool to unify coarse 3D annotations and 2D semantic cues transferred from existing datasets. We demonstrat…

Furthermore, we tested the robustness of our transfer learning strategies under viewpoint and lighting changes using the KTH-Idol2 database. Also, the impact of inference…
In domain generalization, the knowledge learnt from one or multiple source domains is transferred to an unseen target domain. In this work, we propose a novel domain generalization approach for fine-grained scene recognition. We first propose a semantic scene descriptor that jointly captures the subtle differences between fine-grained scenes, while being robust to varying object configurations across domains. We model the occurrence patterns of objects in scenes, capturing the informativeness and discriminability of each object for each scene. We then transform such occurrences into scene prob…
Street scene understanding is an essential task for autonomous driving. One important step towards this direction is scene labeling, which annotates each pixel in the images with a correct class label. Although many approaches have been developed, there are still some weak points. Firstly, many methods are based on the hand-crafted features whose image representation ability is limited. Secondly, they can not label foreground objects accurately due to the dataset bias. Thirdly, in the refinement stage, the traditional Markov Random Filed (MRF) inference is prone to over smoothness. For improvi…

Dynamic texture and scene classification are two fundamental problems in understanding natural video content. Extracting robust and effective features is a crucial step towards solving these problems. However the existing approaches suffer from the sensitivity to either varying illumination, or viewpoint changing, or even camera motion, and/or the lack of spatial information. Inspired by the success of deep structures in image classification, we attempt to leverage a deep structure to extract feature for dynamic texture and scene classification. To tackle with the challenges in training a deep…
