We describe an alternating current method to measure the Nernst effect in superconducting thin films at low temperatures. The Nernst effect is an important tool in the understanding superconducting fluctuations and, in particular, vortex motion near critical points. However, in most materials, the Nernst signal in a typical experimental setup rarely exceeds a few $μ$V, in some cases being as low as a few nV. DC measurements of such small signals require extensive signal processing and protection against stray pickups and offsets, limiting the sensitivity of such measurements to $>$5nV. Here we describe a method utilizing a one-heater-two-thermometer setup with the heating element and thermometers fabricated on-chip with the sample, which helped to reduce thermal load and temperature lag between the substrate and thermometer. Using AC heating power and 2$ω$ measurement, we are able to achieve sub-nanovolt sensitivity in 20-30nm MoGe thin films on glass substrate, compared to a sensitivity of $\sim$9nV using DC techniques on the same setup.
We report Nernst effect measurements for some crystalline films of Ca and Zn-doped yttrium barium copper oxide grown by pulsed laser deposition. We argue that our results and most of the published data for LSCO are consistent with the theory of Gaussian superconducting fluctuations.
We report measurements of the Nernst effect and of the magneto-resistance of granular aluminum films near the metal to insulator transition. These films show sharp transitions as a function of temperature and magnetic field. At low temperatures the Nernst signal displays a sharp peak at a field where more than 90% of the normal state resistance has been restored, suggesting a transition involving entropy transport after superconducting coherence has been destroyed. At temperatures higher than the critical temperature the fluctuation paraconductivity scales with the Nernst signal, in agreement …
Measurements of Nernst effect, resistivity and Hall angle on epitaxial films of Y$_{1-x}$Pr$_x$Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$(Pr-YBCO, 0$\leq x\leq$0.4) are reported over a broad range of temperature and magnetic field. While the Hall and resistivity data suggest a broad pseudogap regime in accordance with earlier results, these first measurements of the Nernst effect on Pr-YBCO show a large signal above the superconducting transition temperature(T$_c$). This effect is attributed to vortex-like excitations in the phase incoherent condensate existing above T$_c$. A correlation between disorder and the w…
In amorphous superconducting thin films of $Nb_{0.15}Si_{0.85}$ and $InO_x$, a finite Nernst coefficient can be detected in a wide range of temperature and magnetic field. Due to the negligible contribution of normal quasi-particles, superconducting fluctuations easily dominate the Nernst response in the entire range of study. In the vicinity of the critical temperature and in the zero-field limit, the magnitude of the signal is in quantitative agreement with what is theoretically expected for the Gaussian fluctuations of the superconducting order parameter. Even at higher temperatures and fin…
We show that the strong Nernst effect observed recently in amorphous superconducting films far above the critical temperature is caused by the fluctuations of the superconducting order parameter. We employ the quantum kinetic approach for the derivation of the Nernst coefficient. We present here the main steps of the calculation and discuss some subtle issues that we encountered while calculating the Nernst coefficient. In particular, we demonstrate that in the limit T=0 the contribution of the magnetization ensures the vanishing of the Nernst signal in accordance with the third law of thermod…
We present a study of the Nernst effect in amorphous superconducting thin films of Nb$_{0.15}$Si$_{0.85}$. The field dependence of the Nernst coefficient above T$_{c}$ displays two distinct regimes separated by a field scale set by the Ginzburg-Landau correlation length. A single function $F(ξ)$, with the correlation length as its unique argument set either by the zero-field correlation length (in the low magnetic field limit) or by the magnetic length (in the opposite limit), describes the Nernst coefficient. We conclude that the Nernst signal observed on a wide temperature ($30 \times T_c$) …
The Nernst effect of Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_4$ (x=0.13, 0.15, and 0.17) has been measured on thin film samples between 5-120 K and 0-14 T. In comparison to recent measurements on hole-doped cuprates that showed an anomalously large Nernst effect above the resistive T$_c$ and H$_{c2}$ \cite{xu,wang1,wang2,capan}, we find a normal Nernst effect above T$_c$ and H$_{c2}$ for all dopings. The lack of an anomalous Nernst effect in the electron-doped compounds supports the models that explain this effect in terms of amplitude and phase fluctuations in the hole-doped cuprates. In addition, the H$_{c2}…
We report a systematic study of normal state Nernst effect in the electron-doped cuprates Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_{4-δ}$ over a wide range of doping (0.05$\leq x \leq$0.21) and temperature. At low temperatures, we observed a notable vortex Nernst signal above T$_c$ in the underdoped films, but no such normal state vortex Nernst signal is found in the overdoped region. The superconducting fluctuations in the underdoped region are most likely incoherent phase fluctuations as found in hole-doped cuprates. At high temperatures, a large normal state Nernst signal is found at dopings from slightly unde…
Various superconductors, including cuprate superconductors, exhibit peculiar features above the transition temperature T_c. In particular the observation of a large diamagnetism and Nernst signal in a wide temperature window above T_c attracted considerable attention. Noting that this temperature window exceeds the fluctuation dominated regime drastically and that in these materials the spatial extent of homogeneity is limited, we explore the relevance of the zero dimensional (0D)-model, neglecting thermal fluctuations. It is shown that both, the full 0D-model as well as its Gaussian approxima…
We present an analytical study of diamagnetism and transport in a film with superconducting phase fluctuations, formulated in terms of vortex dynamics within the Debye-Hückle approximation. We find that the diamagnetic and Nernst signals decay strongly with temperature in a manner which is dictated by the vortex core energy. Using the theory to interpret Nernst measurements of underdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ above the critical temperature regime we obtain a considerably better fit to the data than a fit based on Gaussian order-parameter fluctuations. Our results indicate that the core energ…
We investigate the dependence of the energy gap ($G$) on the temperature ($T$) for the electron-doped high-temperature superconductors. The following compounds, in the form of the thin films, have been taken into consideration: $\rm La_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_{4}$ (LCCO), $\rm Pr_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_{4}$ (PCCO), and $\rm Nd_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_4$ (NCCO). It was found that $G\left(T\right)$ deviates from the BCS prediction more, if a concentration of cerium assumes the lower values. For the lowest concentration (in the case of LCCO and NCCO), the function $G\left(T\right)$ is not quite like the BCS curve, which is conn…
We present a complete analysis of the Nernst signal due to superconducting fluctuations in a large variety of superconductors from conventional to unconventional ones. A closed analytical expression of the fluctuation contribution to the Nernst signal is obtained in a large range of temperature and magnetic field. We apply this expression directly to experimental measurements of the Nernst signal in Nb$_x$Si$_{1-x}$ thin films and a URu$_2$Si$_2$ superconductors. Both magnetic field and temperature dependence of the available data are fitted with very good accuracy using only two fitting param…
We have studied the Nernst coefficient, v(T), of epitaxial thin films of the superconductor Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3Oy with x =0.05 and x = 0.1. The x = 0.1 sample has been measured at three different values of y, in the over- (OV), optimally- (OP), and under-doped (UD) states. As the doping level is reduced, v(T) starts to fall linearly with T at the temperature (T*) where we expect to see the influence of the pseudogap. The onset temperature of the superconducting fluctuation contribution to v(T) was found to vary slowly with the hole concentration (p) between p = 0.118 and 0.197. For the OP and UD sam…
We report a systematic study of the Nernst effect in films of the electron doped cuprate superconductor La2-xCexCuO4 (LCCO) as a function of temperature and magnetic field (up to 14 T) over a range of doping from underdoped (x=0.08) to overdoped (x=0.16). We have determined the characteristic field scale HC2* of superconducting fluctuation which is found to track the dome-like dependence of superconductivity (TC). The fall of HC2* and TC with underdoping is most likely due to the onset of long range anti-ferromagnetic order. We also report the temperature onset, Tonset, of superconducting fluc…
We show that the strong Nernst signal observed recently in amorphous superconducting films far above the critical temperature is caused by the fluctuations of the superconducting order parameter. We demonstrate a striking agreement between our theoretical calculations and the experimental data at various temperatures and magnetic fields. Besides, the Nernst effect is interesting not only in the context of superconductivity. We discuss some subtle issues in the theoretical study of thermal phenomena that we have encountered while calculating the Nernst coefficient. In particular, we explain how…
The superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) is an excellent example for a quantum phase transition at zero temperature, dominated by quantum fluctuations. These are expected to be very prominent close to the quantum critical point. So far most of the experimental study of the SIT has concentrated on transport properties and tunneling experiments which provide indirect information on criticality close to the transition. Here we present an experiment uniquely designed to study the evolution of quantum fluctuations through the quantum critical point. We utilize the Nernst effect, which has been…
We experimentally study the ghost critical field (GCF), a magnetic field scale for the suppression of superconducting fluctuations, using Hall effect and magnetoresistance measurements on a disordered superconducting thin film near its transition temperature $T_c$. We observe an increase in the Hall effect with a maximum in field that tracks the upper critical field below $T_c$, vanishes near $T_c$, and returns to higher fields above $T_c$. Such a maximum has been observed in studies of the Nernst effect and identified as the GCF. Magnetoresistance measurements near $T_c$ indicate quenching of…
A theory of the fluctuation-induced Nernst effect is developed for arbitrary magnetic fields and temperatures beyond the upper critical field line in a two-dimensional superconductor. First, we derive a simple phenomenological formula for the Nernst coefficient, which naturally explains the giant Nernst signal due to fluctuating Cooper pairs. The latter is shown to be large even far from the transition and may exceed by orders of magnitude the Fermi liquid terms. We also present a complete microscopic calculation (which includes quantum fluctuations) of the Nernst coefficient and give its asym…
We report the measurements of in-plane resistivity, Hall effect, and Nernst effect in Zn doped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ epitaxial thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition technique. The pseudogap temperature, $T^*$, determined from the temperature dependence of resistivity, does not change significantly with Zn doping. Meanwhile the onset temperature ($T^ν$) of anomalous Nernst signal above $T_{c0}$, which is interpreted as evidence for vortex-like excitations, decreases sharply as the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c0}$ does. A significant decrease in the maximum of vortex Ne…
Long-range order is destroyed in a superconductor warmed above its critical temperature (Tc). However, amplitude fluctuations of the superconducting order parameter survive and lead to a number of well established phenomena such as paraconductivity : an excess of charge conductivity due to the presence of short-lived Cooper pairs in the normal state. According to an untested theory, these pairs generate a transverse thermoelectric (Nernst) signal. In amorphous superconducting films, the lifetime of Cooper pairs exceeds the elastic lifetime of quasi-particles in a wide temperature range above T…
The normal state resistivity of high temperature superconductors can be probed in the region below Tc by suppressing the superconducting state in high magnetic fields. Here we present the normal state properties of YBa2Cu3Ox thin films in the underdoped regime and the normal state resistance of La2-xSrxCuO4 thin films under epitaxial strain, measured below Tc by applying pulsed fields up to 60 T. A universal rho(T) behaviour is reported. We interpret these data in terms of the recently proposed 1D quantum transport model with the 1D paths corresponding to the charge stripes.
We report the growth of aluminum (111) thin film by atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique with dimethylethylaminealane (DMEAA) as a precursor. It is found that the metallic underlayer is essential to grow uniform aluminum films by DMEAA precursor. As a titanium thin film is used as the underlayer, grown aluminum thin film shows (111) orientation irrespective of substrates. The lattice constant and superconducting transition temperature of the aluminum thin films are the same as the bulk one. These findings suggest that ALD technique provides high quality of the aluminum thin films and have p…
This review article describes the developments over the last 30 months in the thin film growth and junction fabrication of superconducting MgB2, including a brief summary the chemistry and physics of MgB2.
Superconducting MgB2 thin films were prepared on Al2O3(0001) and MgO(100) substrates. Boron thin films were deposited by the electron-beam evaporation followed by post-annealing process with magnesium. Proper post annealing conditions were investigated to grow good superconducting MgB2 thin films. The X-ray diffraction patterns showed randomly orientated growth of MgB2 phase in our thin films. The surface morphology was examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM). Critical current density (Jc) measured by transport method was about 10^7 A/cm^2 at 15 K, and …
The presumably unconventional superconductor Beta-FeSe was deposited by radio frequency sputtering and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) from two elementary sources. Superconducting thin films were grown in (001)-orientation on MgO(100) and YAlO3(010) substrates. The morphology of the samples was studied and directly related to the superconducting properties of the Beta-FeSe thin films. The MBE grown thin films show microcracks down to the substrate and a roughness of about 100~nm. In contrast, sputter deposited superconducting thin films show a smooth surface with almost no precipitates. In both c…
New thin-film Josephson junctions have recently been tested in which the current injected into one of the junction banks governs Josephson phenomena. One thus can continuously manage the phase distribution at the junction by changing the injected current. A method of calculating the distribution of injected currents is proposed for a half-infinite thin-film strip with source-sink points at arbitrary positions at the film edges. The strip width $W$ is assumed small relative to $Λ=2λ^2/d$, $λ$ is the bulk London penetration depth of the film material, $d$ is the film thickness.
We report robust vortex matching effects in antidot arrays fabricated on thin films of NbN. The near absence of hysteresis between field sweep directions indicates a negligible residual pinning in the host thin film. Owing to the very small coherence length of NbN thin films ($ξ< 5 nm$), the observations suggests the possibility of probing physics of vortices at true nanometer length scales in suitably fabricated structures.
Thin films of MgB2 superconductor were prepared by three different procedures on sapphire and silicon substrates. Boron thin films, ex-situ annealed in magnesium vapour, resulted in textured polycrystalline films with crystal dimensions below about 1000 nm, onset critical temperature Tcon near 39 K and width of phase transition about 1 K. Both, ex-situ and in-situ annealed co-deposited boron and magnesium thin films on sapphire and silicon substrates give smooth nanocrystalline films. DC properties of nanocrystalline MgB2 films co-deposited on silicon substrate reached Tcon = 33 K and zero res…
A possible scenario for electric-field induced critical current enhancement in screw dislocated YBCO thin films is proposed based on the converse piezoelectric effect originated from a heavily defected medium of the superconducting films in an applied electric field. The magnitude of the effect is found to depend concurrently on the film thickness and the number of dislocations inside a superconductor.
We have synthesized epitaxial Ba2IrO4 (BIO) thin-films on SrTiO3 (001) substrates by pulsed laser deposition and studied their electronic structure by dc-transport and optical spectroscopic experiments. We have observed that BIO thin-films are insulating but close to the metalinsulator transition boundary with significantly smaller transport and optical gap energies than its sister compound, Sr2IrO4. Moreover, BIO thin-films have both an enhanced electronic bandwidth and electronic-correlation energy. Our results suggest that BIO thin-films have great potential for realizing the interesting ph…
