Quantum computing and quantum communications are exciting new frontiers in computing and communications. Indeed, the massive investments made by the governments of the US, China, and EU in these new technologies are not a secret and are based on the expected potential of these technologies to revolutionize communications, computing, and security. In addition to several field trials and hero experiments, a number of companies such as Google and IBM are actively working in these areas and some have already reported impressive demonstrations in the past few years. While there is some skepticism about whether quantum cryptography will eventually replace classical cryptography, the advent of quantum computing could necessitate the use of quantum cryptography as the ultimate frontier of secure communications. This is because, with the amazing speeds demonstrated with quantum computers, breaking cryptographic keys might no longer be a daunting task in the next decade or so. Hence, quantum cryptography as the ultimate frontier in secure communications might not be such a far-fetched idea. It is well known that Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle is essentially a "negative result" in Physics and Quantum Mechanics. It turns out that Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle, one of the most interesting results in Quantum Mechanics, could be the theoretical basis and the main scientific principle behind the ultimate frontier in quantum cryptography or secure communications in conjunction with Quantum Entanglement.
This paper introduces a new quantum protocol for secure direct communication. This protocol is based on Entanglement and Super-Dense coding. In this paper we present some basic definitions of entanglement in quantum mechanics, present how to use the maximally entangled states known as Bell States, and super dense coding technique to achieve secure direct message communication. Finally, we will apply some error models that could affect the transmission of the quantum data on the quantum channels, and how to treat these errors and acquire a safe transmission of the data.
In this paper, a novel controlled bidirectional quantum secure direct communication protocol (CBQSDC) is proposed. In this scheme, both users can transmit their secret messages directly and simultaneously under the permission of the controller. The proposed method use feature of entanglement swapping which is led to more efficiency (lowest number of quantum resources (EPR pairs)), security and the lowest number of security checking steps. Also, a generalization of the protocol is explained and a protocol of CBQSDC-based network is presented.
We present a supervised secure entanglement sharing protocol via tripartite W states for faithful quantum teleportation. By guaranteeing a secure entanglement distribution in the charge of a third believed supervisor, quantum information of an unknown state of a 2-level particle can be faithfully teleported from the sender to the remote receiver via the Bell states distilled from the tripartite W states. We emphasize that reliable teleportation after our protocol between two communication parties depends on the agreement of the supervisor to cooperate via taking the W states as both the quantu…
Quantum communication in general helps deter potential eavesdropping in the course of transmission of bits to enable secure communication between two or more parties. In this paper, we propose a novel quasi-deterministic secure quantum communication scheme using non-maximally entangled states. The proposed scheme follows a simple procedure, and cases where the entanglement required can be significantly reduced to carry out the protocol successfully are discussed. Long sequences or the whole sequence of data can be sent after error checking for a potential eavesdropper. The maximum qubit effici…
In this paper, we generalize a secured direct communication process between N users with partial and full cooperation of quantum server. The security analysis of authentication and communication processes against many types of attacks proved that the attacker cannot gain any information during intercepting either authentication or communication processes. Hence, the security of transmitted message among N users is ensured as the attacker introduces an error probability irrespective of the sequence of measurement.
Recently, Yan et al. proposed a quantum secure direct communication (QSDC) protocol with authentication using single photons and Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) pairs (Yan et al., CMC-Computers, Materials \& Continua, 63(3), 2020). In this work, we show that the QSDC protocol is not secure against intercept-and-resend attack and impersonation attack. An eavesdropper can get the full secret message by applying these attacks. We propose a modification of this protocol, which defeats the above attacks along with all the familiar attacks.
With the emergence of quantum computing and quantum networks, many communication protocols that take advantage of the unique properties of quantum mechanics to achieve a secure bidirectional exchange of information, have been proposed. In this study, we propose a new quantum communication protocol, called Continuous Quantum Secure Dialogue (CQSD), that allows two parties to continuously exchange messages without halting while ensuring the privacy of the conversation. Compared to existing protocols, CQSD improves the efficiency of quantum communication. In addition, we offer an implementation o…
We study controlled quantum secure direct communication (CQSDC), a cryptographic scheme where a sender can send a secret bit-string to an intended recipient, without any secure classical channel, who can obtain the complete bit-string only with the permission of a controller. We report an efficient protocol to realize CQSDC using Cluster state and then go on to construct a (2-3)-CQSDC using Brown state, where a coalition of any two of the three controllers is required to retrieve the complete message. We argue both protocols to be unconditionally secure and analyze the efficiency of the protoc…
Continuous variable one-way and controlled-two-way secure direct quantum communication schemes have been designed using Gaussian states. Specifically, a scheme for continuous variable quantum secure direct communication and another scheme for continuous variable controlled quantum dialogue are proposed using single-mode squeezed coherent states. The security of the proposed schemes against a set of attacks (e.g., Gaussian quantum cloning machine and intercept resend attacks) has been proved. Further, it is established that the proposed schemes do not require two-mode squeezed states which are …
The most exciting recent development in nonlinear dynamics is realization that chaos can be useful. One application involves "Secure Communication". Two piecewise linear systems with switching nonlinearities have been taken as chaos generators. In the present work the phenomenon of secure communication with chaos masking has been investigated experimentally. In this investigation chaos which is generated from two chaos generators is masked with the massage signal to be transmitted, thus makes communication is more secure.
In key agreement protocols, the user will send a request to the server and the server will respond to that message. After two-way authentication, a secure session key will be created between them. They use the session key to create a secure channel for communication. In 2021, Saleem et al. proposed a protocol for securing user and server communications, claiming that their proposed protocol meets a variety of security needs and is also resistant to known types of attacks. In this article, we will show that Saleem et al's scheme does not meet the security requirement of perfect forward secrecy.
A secure timeline is a tamper-evident historic record of the states through which a system goes throughout its operational history. Secure timelines can help us reason about the temporal ordering of system states in a provable manner. We extend secure timelines to encompass multiple, mutually distrustful services, using timeline entanglement. Timeline entanglement associates disparate timelines maintained at independent systems, by linking undeniably the past of one timeline to the future of another. Timeline entanglement is a sound method to map a time step in the history of one service onto …
Increasing automation and external connectivity in industrial control systems (ICS) demand a greater emphasis on software-level communication security. In this article, we propose a secure-by-design development method for building ICS applications, where requirements from security standards like ISA/IEC 62443 are fulfilled by design-time abstractions called secure links. Proposed as an extension to the IEC 61499 development standard, secure links incorporate both light-weight and traditional security mechanisms into applications with negligible effort. Applications containing secure links can …

Chaotic communications based on semiconductor lasers have aroused great research interest since 1990s. Physical-layer encryption using chaotic lasers is an alternative to transmit message rapidly and confidentially. There are some practical devices and setups for optical chaotic communications, which are intuitively considered to be secure. However, there is lack of a set of security evaluation rules for these communication setups. According to the recent literature, we summarize several criteria for optical chaotic communications to evaluate the security and point out some methods to enhance …

This algorithm is presented both in its basic form as well as in a secured form in order to secure and maintain trust boundaries and communication within specific groups of heterogeneous devices. The specific target application scenarios includes resource constrained environments where a co-located swarm of devices (adversarial in mission or objective) is also present. CHIRP, and its secured version (S-CHIRP), enables complete peer-to-pee…
The majority of available wearable devices require communication with Internet servers for data analysis and storage, and rely on a paired smartphone to enable secure communication. However, wearable devices are mostly equipped with WiFi network interfaces, enabling direct communication with the Internet. Secure communication protocols should then run on these wearables itself, yet it is not clear if they can be efficiently supported. In this paper, we show that wearable devices are ready for direct and secure Internet communication by means of experiments with both controlled and Internet ser…
In a former paper [Fluct. Noise Lett., 13 (2014) 1450020] we introduced a vehicular communication system with unconditionally secure key exchange based on the Kirchhoff-Law-Johnson-Noise (KLJN) key distribution scheme. In this paper, we address the secure KLJN key donation to vehicles. This KLJN key donation solution is performed lane-by-lane by using roadside key provider equipment embedded in the pavement. A method to compute the lifetime of the KLJN key is also given. This key lifetime depends on the car density and gives an upper limit of the lifetime of the KLJN key for vehicular communic…

Molecular communication in nanonetworks is an emerging communication paradigm that uses molecules as information carriers. Achieving a secure information exchange is one of the practical challenges that need to be considered to address the potential of molecular communications in nanonetworks. In this article, we have introduced secure channel into molecular communications to prevent eavesdropping. First, we propose a Diffie Hellman algorithm-based method by which communicating nanomachines can exchange a secret key through molecular signaling. Then, we use this secret key to perform ciphering…
To fulfill two integral aims of abating cellular traffic and enhancing efficiency of cellular network, D2D is considered as a novel channel of communication. This form of communication has introduced for 4th cellular communication and enacts a significant role in the 5th generation. Four D2D communication scenarios defined in the references, includes direct D2D and relaying D2D communication both with and without cellular infrastructure. One of the major challenges addressing D2D protocols contributes to the fact that they have one single secure protocol that can adapt to the four scenarios. I…
We suggest two new methodologies for the design of efficient secure protocols, that differ with respect to their underlying computational models. In one methodology we utilize the communication complexity tree (or branching for f and transform it into a secure protocol. In other words, "any function f that can be computed using communication complexity c can be can be computed securely using communication complexity that is polynomial in c and a security parameter". The second methodology uses the circuit computing f, enhanced with look-up tables as its underlying computational model. It is po…

A brief survey of these chaos-based cryptosystems and of related cryptanalytic results is given. Some recently proposed countermeasures against known attacks are also introduced.
This paper presents a secure communication application called DiscoverFriends. Its purpose is to securely communicate to a group of online friends while bypassing their respective social networking servers under a mobile ad hoc network environment. DiscoverFriends leverages Bloom filters and a hybrid encryption technique with a self-organized public-key management scheme to securely identify friends and provide authentication. Additionally, DiscoverFriends enables anonymous location check-ins by utilizing a new cryptographic primitive called Function Secret Sharing. Finally, to the best of our…
This work investigates the possibility of using non-orthogonal multi-carrier waveforms to defend against eavesdropping attacks. The sophisticated detection required for non-orthogonal signals provides a natural defence mechanism in secure communications. However, brute-force tactics such as maximum likelihood detection would break the defence by attempting all possible solutions. Thus, a waveform scaling strategy is proposed to scale up the number of non-orthogonally packed sub-carriers, which complicates signal detections and prevents eavesdropping. In addition, a waveform tuning strategy is …
Providing security for messages in group communication is more essential and critical nowadays. In group oriented applications such as Video conferencing and entertainment applications, it is necessary to secure the confidential data in such a way that intruders are not able to modify or transmit the data. Key transfer protocols fully rely on trusted Key Generation Center (KGC) to compute group key and to transport the group keys to all communication parties in a secured and secret manner. In this paper, an efficient key generation and key transfer protocol has been proposed where KGC can broa…

Federated Learning enables mobile devices to collaboratively learn a shared inference model while keeping all the training data on a user's device, decoupling the ability to do machine learning from the need to store the data in the cloud. Existing work on federated learning with limited communication demonstrates how random rotation can enable users' model updates to be quantized much more efficiently, reducing the communication cost between users and the server. Meanwhile, secure aggregation enables the server to learn an aggregate of at least a threshold number of device's model contributio…
