The integrals of the motion associated with conformal Killing vectors of a curved space-time with an additional electromagnetic background are studied for massive particles. They involve a new term which might be non-local. The difficulty disappears for pp-waves, for which explicit, local conserved charges are found. Alternatively, the mass can be taken into account by "distorting" the conformal Killing vectors. The relation of these non-point symmetries to the charges is analysed both in the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian approaches, as well as in the framework of Eisenhart-Duval lift.
A study of proper teleparallel conformal vector field in spherically symmetric static space-times is given using the direct integration technique and diagonal tetrads. In this study we show that the above space-times do not admit proper teleparallel conformal vector fields.
Proper conformal symmetries in self-dual (SD) Einstein spaces are considered. It is shown, that such symmetries are admitted only by the Einstein spaces of the type [N]x[N]. Spaces of the type [N]x[-] are considered in details. Existence of the proper conformal Killing vector implies existence of the isometric, covariantly constant and null Killing vector. It is shown, that there are two classes of [N]x[-]-metrics admitting proper conformal symmetry. They can be distinguished by analysis of the associated anti-self-dual (ASD) null strings. Both classes are analyzed in details. The problem is r…
In this paper we investigate conformal symmetries in Locally Rotationally Symmetric (LRS) spacetimes using a semitetrad covariant formalism. We demonstrate that a general LRS spacetime which rotates and spatially twists simultaneously has an inherent homothetic symmetry in the plane spanned by the fluid flow lines and the preferred spatial direction. We discuss the nature and consequence of this homothetic symmetry showing that a null Killing horizon arises when the heat flux has an extremal value. We also consider the special case of a perfect fluid and the restriction on the conformal geomet…
All hypersurface homogeneous locally rotationally symmetric spacetimes which admit conformal symmetries are determined and the symmetry vectors are given explicitly. It is shown that these spacetimes must be considered in two sets. One set containing Ellis Class II and the other containing Ellis Class I, III LRS spacetimes. The determination of the conformal algebra in the first set is achieved by systematizing and completing results on the determination of CKVs in 2+2 decomposable spacetimes. In the second set new methods are developed. The results are applied to obtain the classification of …
We find a new property in $W^2$-conformal gravity in spherical symmetry. We demonstrate that the charge of the electromagnetic field varies with respect to the partial scaling symmetry (conformal transformations in subspaces of a spacetime) in the conformal gravity. We find that the electric and magnetic charges can vanish or appear via partial conformal transformations for the on-shell configurations in the conformal gravity. We find a solution of a Yang-Mills SU(2)-charged black hole in the conformal gravity, and further demonstrate that the SU(2) charge has similar properties with electroma…
Noether symmetries from geodetic Lagrangian for time-conformal plane symmetric spacetime are presented. Here, time conformal factor is used to find the approximate Noether symmetries. This is a generalization of the idea discussed by I. Hussain and A. Noether symmetries from geodetic Lagrangian for time-conformal plane symmetric spacetime are presented. Here, time conformal factor is used to find the approximate Noether symmetries. This is a generalization of the idea discussed by I. Hussain and A. Qadir [3,4], where they obtained approximate Noether symmetries from Lagrangian for a particular…
The exact analytical solutions for vacuum electromagnetic fields of slowly rotating magnetized compact stars in conformal gravity have been studied. Taking the realistic dipolar magnetic field configuration for the star, analytical solutions of the Maxwell equations for the near zone magnetic and the electric fields exterior to a slowly rotating magnetized relativistic star in conformal gravity are obtained. In addition, the dipolar electromagnetic radiation and energy losses from the rotating magnetized compact star in conformal gravity have been studied. With the aim to find observational co…
In this paper we excavate, for the first time, the most general class of conformal Killing vectors, that lies in the two dimensional subspace described by the null and radial co-ordinates, that are admitted by the generalised Vaidya geometry. Subsequently we find the most general class of generalised Vaidya mass functions that give rise to such conformal symmetry. From our analysis it is clear that why some well known subclasses of generalised Vaidya geometry, like pure Vaidya or charged Vaidya solutions, admit only homothetic Killing vectors but no proper conformal Killing vectors with non co…
The conformal Killing equations for the most general (non-plane wave) conformally flat pure radiation field are solved to find the conformal Killing vectors. As expected fifteen independent conformal Killing vectors exist, but in general the metric admits no Killing or homothetic vectors. However for certain special cases a one-dimensional group of homotheties or motions may exist and in one very special case, overlooked by previous investigators, a two-dimensional homethety group exists. No higher dimensional groups of motions or homotheties are admitted by these metrics.
We seek exact solutions to the Einstein field equations which arise when two spacetime geometries are conformally related. Whilst this is a simple method to generate new solutions to the field equations, very few such examples have been found in practice. We use the method of Lie analysis of differential equations to obtain new group invariant solutions to conformally related Petrov type D spacetimes. Four cases arise depending on the nature of the Lie symmetry generator. In three cases we are in a position to solve the master field equation in terms of elementary functions. In the fourth case…
We present three types of non-conformal symmetries for a wide class of 2D dilaton-gravity models. For the particular CGHS, or string-inspired model, a linear combination of these symmetries is conformal and turns out to be the well-known symmetry which allows to construct the exactly solvable semiclassical RST and BPP models. We show that one of these non-conformal symmetries can be converted into a conformal one by means of a suitable field redefinition involving the metric and the derivatives of the dilaton. As a consequence of this, and by defining a Polyakov-type term in terms of an invari…
We study charged fluid spheres under the 4-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell space-time. The solutions thus obtained admitting conformal motion. We also investigate whether the solutions set provide electromagnetic mass models such that the physical parameters including the gravitational mass arise from the electromagnetic field alone. In this connection three cases are studied here in detail with the propositions: (1) $p = - ρ$, (2) $σe^{λ/2} = σ_0$ and (3) $8 πp - E^2 = p_0$ where $ρ$, $p$, $σ$ are respectively the usual matter density, fluid pressure and charge density of the spherical distribut…
We consider a relativistic radiating spherical star in conformally flat spacetimes. In particular we study the junction condition relating the radial pressure to the heat flux at the boundary of the star which is a nonlinear partial differential equation. The Lie symmetry generators that leave the equation invariant are identified and we generate an optimal system. Each element of the optimal system is used to reduce the partial differential equation to an ordinary differential equation which is further analysed. We identify new categories of exact solutions to the boundary conditions. Two cla…
General $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ supergravity-matter systems in six dimensions may be described using one of the two fully fledged superspace formulations for conformal supergravity: (i) $\mathsf{SU}(2)$ superspace; and (ii) conformal superspace. With motivation to develop rigid supersymmetric field theories in curved space, this paper is devoted to the study of the geometric symmetries of supergravity backgrounds. In particular, we introduce the notion of a conformal Killing spinor superfield $ε^α$, which proves to generate extended superconformal transformations. Among its cousins are the conform…
We propose a different approach to the analysis of symmetries in the near-horizon region of black holes. The idea is presented here for spherically symmetric black holes, for which we have shown that the generators of hidden symmetries can be extracted by solving the conformal Killing equation under certain assumptions. Our result is in agreement with that obtained in literature by the analysis of the wave equation in the near-horizon region.
We show that the symmetry algebra of asymptotically flat four dimensional spacetimes at null infinity in the sense of Newman and Unti is isomorphic to the direct sum of the abelian algebra of infinitesimal conformal rescalings with bms4. We then work out the local conformal properties of the relevant Newman-Penrose coefficients, as well as the surface charges and their algebra.
We present a detailed discussion of the asymptotic symmetries of Anti-de Sitter space in two dimensions and their relationship with the conformal group in one dimension. We use this relationship to give a microscopical derivation of the entropy of 2d black holes that have asymptotically Anti-de Sitter behaviour. The implications of our results for the conjectured AdS_2/CFT_1 duality are also discussed.
The Kerr-Taub-NUT spacetime in the Kaluza-Klein theory represents a localized stationary and axisymmetric object in four dimensions from the Kaluza-Klein viewpoint. That is, it harbors companion electromagnetic and dilaton fields, thereby showing up the signature of the extra fifth dimension. We explore the separability structure of this spacetime and show that the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for geodesics admits the complete separation of variables only for massless geodesics. This implies the existence of the hidden symmetries in the spacetime, which are generated by the conformal Killing tenso…
Maxwell's equations are invariant under both duality rotations and conformal transformations. Recently Bandos, Lechner, Sorokin, and Townsend have found a nonlinear generalisation of electrodynamics which possesses both of these symmetries. We couple this theory to General Relativity and explore self-gravitating configurations with a clear physical interpretation. We find charged black holes and exact gravitational waves. The black hole geometry is Reissner-Nordström, however, the non-linearity parameter acts as a screening factor allowing extremal configurations where the mass of the black ho…
We prove that the electromagnetic field in a (1+2)-dimensional spacetime necessarily inherits the symmetries of the spacetime metric in a large class of generalized Einstein-Maxwell theories. The Lagrangians of the studied theories have general diff-covariant gravitational part and include both the gravitational and the gauge Chern-Simons terms.
We calculate canonical charges in four dimensional conformal gravity using the generalised boundary conditions presented in \cite{Grumiller:2013mxa}. We show that the charges are finite and conserved. The asymptotic symmetry algebras generated by these charges are classified according to the conditions imposed on the first subleading term in the generalised Fefferman-Graham expansion.
We suggest a way to study possible conformal symmetries on black hole horizons. We do this by carrying out a Kaluza-Klein like reduction of the Einstein-Hilbert action along the ignorable coordinates of stationary and axisymmetric black holes. Rigid diffeomorphism invariance of the $m$-ignorable coordinates then becomes a global $SL(m,R)$ gauge symmetry of the reduced action. Related to each non-vanishing angular velocity there is a particular $SL(2,R)$ subgroup, which can be extended to the Witt algebra on the black hole horizons. The classical Einstein-Hilbert action thus has $k$-copies of i…
Lie derivatives of various geometrical and physical quantities define symmetries and conformal symmetries in general relativity. Thus we obtain motions, collineations, conformal motions and conformal collineations. These symmetries are used not only to find new solutions of Einstein's field equations but to classify the spaces also. Different classification schemes are presented here. Relationships between these symmetries are discussed and illustrating examples are presented.
We study finite-dimensional extra symmetries of generic 2D dilaton gravity models. Using a non-linear sigma model formulation we show that the unique theories admitting an extra (conformal) symmetry are the models with an exponential potential $V \propto e^{βϕ}$ ($ S ={1\over2π} \int d^2 x \sqrt{-g} [ R ϕ+ 4 λ^2 e^{βϕ} ]$), which include the CGHS model as a particular though limiting ($β=0$) case. These models give rise to black hole solutions with a mass-dependent temperature. The underlying extra symmetry can be maintained in a natural way in the one-loop effective action, thus implying the …
We investigate the conformal geometry of spherically symmetric spacetimes in general without specifying the form of the matter distribution. The general conformal Killing symmetry is obtained subject to a number of integrability conditions. Previous results relating to static spacetimes are shown to be a special case of our solution. The general inheriting conformal symmetry vector, which maps fluid flow lines conformally onto fluid flow lines, is generated and the integrability conditions are shown to be satisfied. We show that there exists a hypersurface orthogonal conformal Killing vector i…
We revise and generalize the properties of the electric and the magnetic scalar potentials in spacetimes admitting a Killing vector field: Their constancy on the Killing horizons, uniqueness of solution for the electromagnetic test fields and the relation between the Bianchi identity and Maxwell's equations. In each of these examples, collinearity of currents with the Killing vector field is shown to be the crucial property.
This article provides us with a unifying classification of the conformal infinitesimal symmetries of non-relativistic Newton-Cartan spacetime. The Lie algebras of non-relativistic conformal transformations are introduced via the Galilei structure. They form a family of infinite-dimensional Lie algebras labeled by a rational "dynamical exponent", $z$. The Schrödinger-Virasoro algebra of Henkel et al. corresponds to $z=2$. Viewed as projective Newton-Cartan symmetries, they yield, for timelike geodesics, the usual Schrödinger Lie algebra, for which z=2. For lightlike geodesics, they yield, in tu…
In a recent paper, a new conformally flat metric was introduced, describing an expanding scalar field in a spherically symmetric geometry. The spacetime can be interpreted as a Schwarzschild-like model with an apparent horizon surrounding the curvature singularity. For the above metric, we present the complete conformal Lie algebra consisting of a six-dimensional subalgebra of isometries (Killing Vector Fields or KVFs) and nine proper conformal vector fields (CVFs). An interesting aspect of our findings is that there exists a gradient (proper) conformal symmetry (i.e., its bivector vanishes) w…
Conformal matter collineations of the energy-momentum tensor for a general spherically symmetric static spacetime are studied. The general form of these collineations is found when the energy-momentum tensor is non-degenerate, and the maximum number of independent conformal matter collineations is \emph{fifteen}. In the degenerate case of the energy-momentum tensor it is found that these collineations have infinite degrees of freedom. In some subcases of degenerate energy-momentum, the Ricci tensor is non-degenerate, that is, there exist non-degenerate Ricci inheritance collineations.
Definitions of non-relativistic conformal transformations are considered both in the Newton-Cartan and in the Kaluza-Klein-type Eisenhart/Bargmann geometrical frameworks. The symmetry groups that come into play are exemplified by the cosmological, and also the Newton-Hooke solutions of Newton's gravitational field equations. It is shown, in particular, that the maximal symmetry group of the standard cosmological model is isomorphic to the 13-dimensional conformal-Newton-Cartan group whose conformal-Bargmann extension is explicitly worked out. Attention is drawn to the appearance of independent…
We extend the classical results on the symmetry inheritance of the canonical electromagnetic fields, described by the Maxwell's Lagrangian, to a much wider class of models, which include those of the Born-Infeld, power Maxwell and the Euler-Heisenberg type. Symmetry inheriting fields allow the introduction of electromagnetic scalar potentials and these are proven to be constant on the Killing horizons. Finally, using the relations obtained along the analysis, we generalize and simplify the recent proof for the symmetry inheritance of the 3-dimensional case, as well as give the first constraint…
We study the Lie point symmetries of a general class of partial differential equations (PDE) of second order. An equation from this class naturally defines a second-order symmetric tensor (metric). In the case the PDE is linear on the first derivatives we show that the Lie point symmetries are given by the conformal algebra of the metric modulo a constraint involving the linear part of the PDE. Important elements in this class are the Klein--Gordon equation and the Laplace equation. We apply the general results and determine the Lie point symmetries of these equations in various general classe…
Standard textbooks will state that hydrodynamics requires near-equilibrium to be applicable. Recently, however, out-of-equilibrium attractor solutions for hydrodynamics have been found in kinetic theory and holography in systems with a high degree of symmetry, suggesting the possibility of a genuine out-of-equilibrium formulation of hydrodynamics. This work demonstrates that attractor solutions also occur in non-conformal kinetic theory and spatially non-homogeneous systems, potentially having important implications for the interpretation of experimental data in heavy-ion and proton-proton col…
We show that any accelerating Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) cosmology with equation of state w < -1/3 (and therefore not only a de Sitter stage with w =-1) exhibits three-dimensional conformal symmetry on future constant-time hypersurfaces. We also offer an alternative derivation of this result in terms of conformal Killing vectors and show that long wavelength comoving curvature perturbations of the perturbed FRW metric are just conformal Killing motions of the FRW background. We then extend theb boundary conformal symmetry to the bulk for accelerating cosmologies. Our findings indicate th…
In four spacetime dimensions, all ${\cal N} =1$ supergravity-matter systems can be formulated in the so-called $\mathsf{U}(1)$ superspace proposed by Howe in 1981. This paper is devoted to the study of those geometric structures which characterise a background $\mathsf{U}(1)$ superspace and are important in the context of supersymmetric field theory in curved space. We introduce (conformal) Killing tensor superfields $\ell_{(α_1 \dots α_m) ({\dot α}_1 \dots {\dot α}_n)}$, with $m$ and $n$ non-negative integers, $m+n>0$, and elaborate on their significance in the following cases: (i) $m=n=1$; (…
We provide a unified treatment of conformally soft Goldstone modes which arise when spin-one or spin-two conformal primary wavefunctions become pure gauge for certain integer values of the conformal dimension $Δ$. This effort lands us at the crossroads of two ongoing debates about what the appropriate conformal basis for celestial CFT is and what the asymptotic symmetry group of Einstein gravity at null infinity should be. Finite energy wavefunctions are captured by the principal continuous series $Δ\in 1+i\mathbb{R}$ and form a complete basis. We show that conformal primaries with analyticall…
In the framework of classical field theory, we first review the Noether theory of symmetries, with simple rederivations of its essential results, with special emphasis given to the Noether identities for gauge theories. Will this baggage on board, we next discuss in detail, for Poincaré invariant theories in flat spacetime, the differences between the Belinfante energy-momentum tensor and a family of Hilbert energy-momentum tensors. All these tensors coincide on shell but they split their duties in the following sense: Belinfante's tensor is the one to use in order to obtain the generators of …
A new 8-dim conformal gauging solves the auxiliary field problem and eliminates unphysical size change from Weyl's electromagnetic theory. We derive the Maurer-Cartan structure equations and find the zero curvature solutions for the conformal connection. By showing that every one-particle Hamiltonian generates the structure equations we establish a correspondence between phase space and the 8-dim base space, and between the action and the integral of the Weyl vector. Applying the correspondence to generic flat solutions yields the Lorentz force law, the form and gauge dependence of the electro…
A didactic and systematic derivation of Noether point symmetries and conserved currents is put forward in special relativistic field theories, without a priori assumptions about the transformation laws. Given the Lagrangian density, the invariance condition develops as a set of partial differential equations determining the symmetry transformation. The solution is provided in the case of real scalar, complex scalar, free electromagnetic, and charged electromagnetic fields. Besides the usual conservation laws, a less popular symmetry is analyzed: the symmetry associated with the linear superpos…
It is well established that the mass parameter breaks the conformal symmetries in the case of geodesic motion. The proper conformal Killing vectors cease to generate conserved charges when non-null geodesics are considered. We examine how the introduction of the mass is actually related to the appearance of appropriate distortions in the conformal sector, which lead to new conservation laws. As a prominent example we use a general pp-wave metric, which exploits this property to the maximum. We study the necessary geometric conditions, so that such types of distortions are applicable. We show t…
The horizon and geodesic structure of static configurations generated by anisotropic conformal transforms of the Schwarzschild metric is analyzed. We construct the maximal analytic extension of such off--diagonal vacuum metrics and conclude that for small deformations there are different classes of vacuum solutions of the Einstein equations describing "black ellipsoid" objects. This is possible because, in general, for off--diagonal metrics with deformed non--spherical symmetries and associated anholonomic frames the conditions of the uniqueness black hole theorems do not hold.
We show that the Laplace-Beltrami equation $\square_6 a =j$ in $(\setR^6,η)$, $η:= \mathrm{diag}(+----+)$, leads under very moderate assumptions to both the Maxwell equations and the conformal Eastwood-Singer gauge condition on conformally flat spaces including the spaces with a Robertson-Walker metric. This result is obtained through a geometric formalism which gives, as byproduct, simplified calculations. In particular, we build an atlas for all the conformally flat spaces considered which allows us to fully exploit the Weyl rescalling to Minkowski space.
The historical developments of conformal transformations and symmetries are sketched: Their origin from stereographic projections of the globe, their blossoming in two dimensions within the field of analytic complex functions, the generic role of transformations by reciprocal radii in dimensions higher than two and their linearization in terms of polyspherical coordinates by Darboux, Weyl's attempt to extend General Relativity, the slow rise of finite dimensional conformal transformations in classical field theories and the problem of their interpretation, then since about 1970 the rapid sprea…
We present a conformal isometry for static extremal black hole solutions in all four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theories with electromagnetic duality groups `of type $E_7$'. This includes, but is not limited to, all supergravity theories with $\mathcal{N}>2$ supersymmetry and all $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity theories with symmetric scalar manifolds. The conformal isometry is valid for arbitrary electromagnetic charge configurations and relies crucially on the notion of Freudenthal duality.
The conformal symmetry algebra in 2D (Diff($S^{1}$)$\oplus$Diff($S^{1}$)) is shown to be related to its ultra/non-relativistic version (BMS$_{3}$$\approx$GCA$_{2}$) through a nonlinear map of the generators, without any sort of limiting process. For a generic classical CFT$_{2}$, the BMS$_{3}$ generators then emerge as composites built out from the chiral (holomorphic) components of the stress-energy tensor, $T$ and $\bar{T}$, closing in the Poisson brackets at equal time slices. Nevertheless, supertranslation generators do not span Noetherian symmetries. BMS$_{3}$ becomes a bona fide symmetry…
In this thesis, the symmetry structure of gravitational theories at null infinity is studied further, in the case of pure gravity in four dimensions and also in the case of Einstein-Yang-Mills theory in $d$ dimensions with and without a cosmological constant. The first part of this thesis is devoted to the presentation of asymptotic methods (symmetries, solution space and surface charges) applied to gravity in the case of the BMS gauge in three and four spacetime dimensions. The second part of this thesis contains the original contributions. Firstly, it is shown that the enhancement from Loren…
We show that Spatially Inhomogeneous (SI) and Irrotational dust models admit a \emph{6-dimensional algebra } of \emph{Intrinsic Conformal Vector Fields} (ICVFs) $\mathbf{X}_{α}$ satisfying $p_{a}^{c}p_{b}^{d}\mathcal{L}_{\mathbf{X}_{α}}p_{cd}=2ϕ(\mathbf{X}_{α})p_{ab}$ where $p_{ab}$ is the associated metric of the 2d distribution $\mathcal{X}$ normal to the fluid velocity $u^{a}$ and the radial unit spacelike vector field $x^{a}$. The Intrinsic Conformal (IC) algebra is determined for each of the curvature value $ε$ that characterizes the structure of the screen space $\mathcal{X}$. In additio…
Conformal quantum mechanics has been proposed to be the CFT$_1$ dual to AdS$_2$. The $N$-point correlation function that satisfy conformal constraints have been constructed from a non-conformal vacuum and the insertion of a non-primary operator. The main goal of this paper is to find an interpretation of this oddness. For this purpouse, we study possible gravitational dual models and propose a two-dimensional dilaton gravity with a massless fermion for the description of conformal quantum mechanics. We find a universal correspondence between states in the conformal quantum mechanics model and …
