Motivated by the old trans-Planckian (TP) problem of inflationary cosmology, it has been conjectured that any consistent effective field theory should keep TP modes `hidden' behind the Hubble horizon, so as to prevent them from turning classical and thereby affecting macroscopic observations. In this paper we present two arguments against the Hubble horizon being a scale of singular significance as has been put forward in the TP Censorship Conjecture (TCC). First, refinements of TCC are presented that allow for the TP modes to grow beyond the horizon while still keeping the de-Sitter conjecture valid. Second, we show that TP modes can turn classical even well within the Hubble horizon, which, as such, negates this rationale behind keeping them from crossing it. The role of TP modes is known to be less of a problem in warm inflation, because fluctuations start out usually as classical. This allows warm inflation to be more resilient to the TP problem compared to cold inflation. To understand how robust this is, we identity limits where quantum modes can affect the primordial power spectrum in one specific case.
In minisuperspace quantum cosmology, the Lorentzian path integral formulations of the no-boundary and tunneling proposals have recently been analyzed. But it has been pointed out that the wave function of linearized perturbations around a homogeneous and isotropic background is of an inverse Gaussian form and thus that their correlation functions are divergent. In this paper, we revisit this issue and consider the problem of perturbations in Lorentzian quantum cosmology by modifying the dispersion relation based on trans-Planckian physics. We consider two modified dispersion relations, the gen…
I review the "Trans-Planckian Censorship Conjecture" (TCC) and its implications for cosmology, in particular for the inflationary universe scenario. Whereas the inflationary scenario is tightly constrained by the TCC, alternative early universe scenarios are not restricted.
The accelerated expansion of space during the period of cosmological inflation leads to trans-Planckian issues which need to be addressed. Most importantly, the physical wavelength of fluctuations which are studied at the present time by means of cosmological observations may well originate with a wavelength smaller than the Planck length at the beginning of the inflationary phase. Thus, questions arise as to whether the usual predictions of inflationary cosmology are robust considering our ignorance of physics on trans-Planckian scales, and whether the imprints of Planck-scale physics are at …
We study the implications of the recently proposed Trans-Planckian Censorship Conjecture (TCC) for early universe cosmology and in particular inflationary cosmology. The TCC leads to the conclusion that if we want inflationary cosmology to provide a successful scenario for cosmological structure formation, the energy scale of inflation has to be lower than $10^9$ GeV. Demanding the correct amplitude of the cosmological perturbations then forces the generalized slow-roll parameter $ε$ of the model to be very small ($<10^{-31}$). This leads to the prediction of a negligible amplitude of primordi…
We consider a minimum uncertainty vacuum choice at a fixed energy scale Lambda as an effective description of trans-Planckian physics, and discuss its implications for the linear perturbations of a massless scalar field in power-law inflationary models. We find possible effects with a magnitude of order H/Λin the power spectrum, in analogy with previous results for de-Sitter space-time.
We consider a more general initial condition satisfying the minimal uncertainty relationship. We calculate the power spectrum of a simple model in inflationary cosmology. The results depend on perturbations generated below a fundamental scale, e.g. the Planck scale.
Finite expressions for the mean value of the stress tensor corresponding to a scalar field with a generalized dispersion relation in a Friedman--Robertson--Walker universe are obtained using adiabatic renormalization. Formally divergent integrals are evaluated by means of dimensional regularization. The renormalization procedure is shown to be equivalent to a redefinition of the cosmological constant and the Newton constant in the semiclassical Einstein equations.
We consider observational constraints on creation of particles induced by hypothetical trans-Planckian effects during the current stage of the Universe expansion. We show that compatibility with the diffuse gamma-ray background measured by the EGRET experiment strongly restricts this creation. In particular, it rules out the possibility to detect signatures of such short distance effects in anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background radiation. On the other hand, a possibility that some part of the ultra-high energy cosmic rays originates from new trans-Planckian physics remains open.
Due to the quasi-exponential red-shifting which occurs during an inflationary period in the very early Universe, wavelengths which at the present time correspond to cosmological lengths are in general sub-Planckian during the early stages of inflation. This talk discusses two approaches to addressing this issue which both indicate that the standard predictions of inflationary cosmology - made using classical general relativity and weakly coupled scalar matter field theory - are not robust against changes in the physics on trans-Planckian scales. One approach makes use of modified dispersion re…
We employ the semiclassical approximation to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation in the spatially flat de Sitter Universe to investigate the dynamics of a minimally coupled scalar field near the Planck scale. We find that, contrary to naive intuition, the effects of quantum gravitational fluctuations become negligible and the scalar field states asymptotically approach plane-waves at very early times. These states can then be used as initial conditions for the quantum states of matter to show that each mode essentially originated in the minimum energy vacuum. Although the full quantum dynamics cannot …
We consider an inflationary universe model in which the phase of accelerated expansion was preceded by a non-singular bounce and a period of contraction which involves a phase of deceleration. We follow fluctuations which exit the Hubble radius in the radiation-dominated contracting phase as quantum vacuum fluctuations, re-enter the Hubble radius in the deflationary period and re-cross during the phase of inflationary expansion. Evolving the fluctuations using the general relativistic linear perturbation equations, we find that they exit the Hubble radius during inflation not with a scale-inva…
This article presents the derivation of the stress-energy tensor of a free scalar field with a general non-linear dispersion relation in curved spacetime. This dispersion relation is used as a phenomelogical description of the short distance structure of spacetime following the conventional approach of trans-Planckian modes in black hole physics and in cosmology. This stress-energy tensor is then used to discuss both the equation of state of trans-Planckian modes in cosmology and the magnitude of their backreaction during inflation. It is shown that gravitational waves of trans-Planckian momen…
We calculate the power spectrum of metric fluctuations in inflationary cosmology starting with initial conditions which are imposed mode by mode when the wavelength equals some critical length $\ell_{_{\rm C}}$ corresponding to a new energy scale $M_{_{\rm C}}$ at which trans-Planckian physics becomes important. In this case, the power spectrum can differ from what is calculated in the usual framework (which amounts to choosing the adiabatic vacuum state). The fractional difference in the results depends on the ratio $σ_0$ between the Hubble expansion rate $H_{\rm inf}$ during inflation and th…
The aim of Quantum Fisher Cosmology is to use the quantum Fisher information about pure de Sitter states to derive model independent observational consequences of the existence of a primordial phase of the Universe of de Sitter accelerated expansion. These quantum features are encoded in a scale dependent quantum cosmological tilt that defines what we can call the de Sitter universality class. The experimental predictions are: i) A phase transition from red into blue tilt at a scale order $k= 1$ Mpc$^{-1}$ that naturally solves the cosmological trans-Planckian problem, ii) A spectral index for…
We analyze the semiclassical Einstein equations for quantum scalar fields satisfying modified dispersion relations. We first discuss in detail the renormalization procedure based on adiabatic subtraction and dimensional regularization. We show that, contrary to what expected from power counting arguments, in 3+1 dimensions the subtraction involves up to the fourth adiabatic order even for dispersion relations containing higher powers of the momentum. Then we analyze the dependence of the trace of the renormalized energy momentum tensor with the scale of new physics, and we recover the usual tr…
There are good indications that fundamental physics gives rise to a modified space-momentum uncertainty relation that implies the existence of a minimum length scale. We implement this idea in the scalar field theory that describes density perturbations in flat Robertson-Walker space-time. This leads to a non-linear time-dependent dispersion relation that encodes the effects of Planck scale physics in the inflationary epoch. Unruh type dispersion relations naturally emerge in this approach, while unbounded ones are excluded by the minimum length principle. We also find red-shift induced modifi…
We investigate a model based on a generalised version of the Fourier transform for curved space-time manifolds. This model is possible if the metric has an asymptotic flat region which allows a duality to be implement between coordinates and momenta, hence, the models's name, trans-Planckian. The theory and the action are based on the postulate of the absolute egalitarian relation between coordinates $x$ and momenta $p$. We show how to implement this construction in a cosmological setting, on a Friedman-Robertson-Walker metric background, where the asymptotic time infinity plays the role of th…
In this Letter we study the dependence of the spectrum of fluctuations in inflationary cosmology on possible effects of trans-Planckian physics, using the Corley/Jacobson dispersion relations as an example. We compare the methods used in previous work [1] with the WKB approximation, give a new exact analytical result, and study the dependence of the spectrum obtained using the approximate method of Ref. [1] on the choice of the matching time between different time intervals. We also comment on recent work subsequent to Ref. [1] on the trans-Planckian problem for inflationary cosmology.
We provide a class of QFTs which exhibit dissipation above a threshold energy, thereby breaking Lorentz invariance. Unitarity is preserved by coupling the fields to additional degrees of freedom (heavy fields) which introduce the rest frame. Using the Equivalence Principle, we define these theories in arbitrary curved spacetime. We then confront the trans-Planckian question of inflationary cosmology. When dissipation increases with the energy, the quantum field describing adiabatic perturbations is completely damped at the onset of inflation. However it still exists as a composite operator mad…
We investigate the Trans-Planckian Censorship Conjecture (TCC) and the arising bounds on the inflationary cosmology caused by that conjecture. In that investigation, we analyze TCC bounds for both Jordan and Einstein frames in the presence of a generic non-minimal coupling (to gravity) term. That term allows us to use the functional freedom it brings to the inflationary Lagrangian as an effective Planck mass. In this sense, we argue one should consider the initial field value of the effective Planck mass for the TCC. We show that as a result, one can remove the TCC upper bounds without the nee…
In most current models of inflation based on a weakly self-coupled scalar matter field minimally coupled to gravity, the period of inflation lasts so long that, at the beginning of the inflationary period, the physical wavelengths of comoving scales which correspond to the present large-scale structure of the Universe were smaller than the Planck length. Thus, the usual computations of the spectrum of fluctuations in these models involve extrapolating low energy physics (both in the matter and gravitational sector) into regions where this physics is not applicable. In this paper we demonstrate…
In approaches to quantum gravity, where smooth spacetime is an emergent approximation of a discrete Planckian fundamental structure, any standard effective field theoretical description will miss part of the degrees of freedom and thus break unitarity. Here we show that these expectations can be made precise in loop quantum cosmology. Concretely, even when loop quantum cosmology is unitary at the fundamental level, when microscopic degrees of freedom, irrelevant to low-energy cosmological observers, are suitably ignored, pure states in the effective description evolve into mixed states due to …
We show that the constraints which follow from the {\it Trans-Planckian Censorship Conjecture} for inflationary cosmology can be strengthened if the pre-inflationary universe was dominated by radiation. The resulting upper bound on the energy scale of inflation is $η\sim 10^4 {\rm GeV}$, close to the scale accessible to accelerator experiments.
It is remarkable that the primordial fluctuations as revealed by the CMB coincide with what quantum fluctuations would look like if they were stretched across the sky by accelerated cosmic expansion. It has been observed that this same stretching also brings very small -- even trans-Planckian -- length scales up to observable sizes if extrapolated far enough into the past. This potentially jeopardizes later descriptions of late-time cosmology by introducing uncontrolled trans-Planckian theoretical errors into all calculations. Recent speculations, such as the Trans-Planckian Censorship Conject…
Trans-Planckian redshifts in cosmology and outside black holes may provide windows on a hypothetical short distance cutoff on the fundamental degrees of freedom. In cosmology, such a cutoff seems to require a growing Hilbert space, but for black holes, Unruh's sonic analogy has given rise to both field theoretic and lattice models demonstrating how such a cutoff in a fixed Hilbert space might be compatible with a low energy effective quantum field theory of the Hawking effect. In the lattice case, the outgoing modes arise via a Bloch oscillation from ingoing modes. A short distance cutoff on d…
We calculate six invariant terms of a gravitational field theory that nonlinearly realizes the Conformal/Poincaré quotient, and reduce to the known conformal Galileons in the limit when only the conformal mode is kept. Five of the six terms are regular coset terms, while the sixth is a Wess-Zumino (WZ) term that gives the well-known gravitational action for the trace anomaly. The obtained terms can be embedded in a quantum effective field theory (EFT) without spoiling their key features, although at a cost of certain fine tunings. The additional massive modes that appear in the EFT would have …
The trans-Planckian censorship conjecture (TCC) puts an upper bound on the life-time of de Sitter spacetimes. It has immediate consequences for inflationary cosmology. In the standard paradigm, the universe has experienced a single stage of inflation and follows a thermal history. Then, the TCC puts an upper bound on the Hubble parameter during inflation $H_{\rm inf}$ around $0.1$ GeV. Consequently, it implies a severe fine-tuning in initial condition for inflation and non-detection of primordial gravitational waves. In this note, we study non-standard cosmological paradigms with non-thermal h…
We study a particular nonlinear dispersion relation $ω_p(k_p)$ -- a series expansion in the physical wavenumber $k_p$ -- for modeling first-order corrections in the equation of motion of a test scalar field in a de Sitter spacetime from trans-Planckian physics in cosmology. Using both a numerical approach and a semianalytical one, we show that the WKB approximation previously adopted in the literature should be used with caution, since it holds only when the comoving wavenumber $k\gg aH$. We determine the amplitude and behavior of the corrections on the power spectrum for this test field. Furt…

We calculate the spectrum of the relic gravitational wave due to the trans-Planckian effect in which the standard linear dispersion relations may be modified. Of the modified dispersion relations suggested in literatures which have investigated the trans-Planckian effect, we especially use the Corley-Jacobson dispersion relations. The Corley-Jacobson type modified dispersion relations can be obtained from Hořava-Lifshitz gravity which is non-relativistic and UV complete. Although it is not clear how the transitions from Hořava-Lifshitz gravity in the UV regime to Einstein gravity in the IR lim…
The trans-Planckian censorship conjecture implies that single-field models of inflation require an extreme fine-tuning of the initial conditions due to the very low-scale of inflation. In this work, we show how a quantum cosmological proposal -- namely the tunneling wavefunction -- naturally provides the necessary initial conditions without requiring such fine-tunings. More generally, we show how the tunneling wavefunction can provide suitable initial conditions for hilltop inflation models, the latter being typically preferred by the swampland constraints.
A set of diverse but mutually consistent results obtained in different settings has spawned a new view of loop quantum gravity and its physical implications, based on the interplay of operator calculations and effective theory: Quantum corrections modify, but do not destroy, space-time and the notion of covariance. Potentially observable effects much more promising than those of higher-curvature effective actions result; loop quantum gravity has turned into a falsifiable framework, with interesting ingredients for new cosmic world views. At Planckian densities, space-time disappears and is rep…
The ``trans-Planckian'' challenge in cosmology appears when we trace the present physical wavelengths of fluctuations backwards in time. They become smaller and smaller until crossing the Planck scale where conventional QFT is challenged, so that unknown ultraviolet physics may be traced in the observable cosmological fluctuations. Usually this issue is addressed in the inflationary context, but trans-Planckian reasoning is much broader. We examine this logic in a simple example of scalar quantum field theory in the expanding and contracting Milne universes, where wavelengths of the eigenmodes…
Planck scale physics may influence the evolution of cosmological fluctuations in the early stages of cosmological evolution. Because of the quasi-exponential redshifting, which occurs during an inflationary period, the physical wavelengths of comoving scales that correspond to the present large-scale structure of the Universe were smaller than the Planck length in the early stages of the inflationary period. This trans-Planckian effect was studied before using toy models. The Horava-Lifshitz (HL) theory offers the chance to study this problem in a candidate UV complete theory of gravity. In th…
We propose a refined version of trans-Planckian censorship conjecture (TCC), which could be elaborated from the strong scalar weak gravity conjecture combined with some entropy bounds. In particular, no fine-tuning on the inflation model-building is required in the refined TCC, and it automatically passes the tests from those stringy examples that support the original TCC. Furthermore, our refined TCC could be consistent with hilltop eternal inflation.
One of the firm predictions of inflationary cosmology is the consistency relation between scalar and tensor spectra. It has been argued that such a relation -if experimentally confirmed- would offer strong support for the idea of inflation. We examine the possibility that trans-Planckian physics violates the consistency relation in the framework of inflation with a cut-off proposed in astro-ph/0009209. We find that despite the ambiguity that exists in choosing the action, Planck scale physics modifies the consistency relation considerably. It also leads to the running of the spectral index. Fo…
The recently proposed trans-Planckian censorship conjecture (TCC) seems to require that the energy scale of inflation is significantly lower than the Planck scale $(H_\text{inf}<10^{-20} \Mpl)$. This, in turn, implies that the tensor-to-scalar ratio for inflation is negligibly small, \textit{independent} of assumptions of slow-roll or even of having a single scalar field, thus ruling out inflation if primordial tensor modes are ever observed. After demonstrating the robustness and generality of these bounds, we show that having an excited initial state for cosmological perturbations seems to b…
We explore the bound of the trans-Planckian censorship conjecture on an inflation model with multiple stages. We show that if the first inflationary stage is responsible for the primordial perturbations in the cosmic microwave background window, the $e$-folding number of each subsequent stage will be bounded by the energy scale of the first stage. This seems to imply that the lifetime of the current era of accelerated expansion (regarded as one of the multiple inflationary stages) might be a probe for distinguishing inflation from its alternatives. We also present a multistage inflation model …
An important question in the derivation of the acceleration radiation, which also arises in Hawking's derivation of black hole radiance, is the need to invoke trans-Planckian physics for the quantum field that originates the created quanta. We point out that this issue can be further clarified by reconsidering the analysis in terms of particle detectors, transition probabilities, and local two-point functions. By writing down separate expressions for the spontaneous- and induced-transition probabilities of a uniformly accelerated detector, we show that the bulk of the effect comes from the nat…
In this Letter, we consider the model-independent reconstruction of the expansion and growth functions from the Pantheon supernova data. The method relies on developing the expansion function in terms of shifted Chebyshev polynomials and determining the coefficients of the polynomials by a maximum-likelihood fit to the data. Having obtained the expansion function in a model-independent way, we can then also determine the growth function without assuming a particular model. We then compare the results with the predictions of two classes of Dark Energy models, firstly a class of quintessence sca…
It has been shown that sub-Planckian models of inflation require initial homogeneity on super-Hubble scales under certain commonly held assumptions. Here I remark on the possible implications of this result for inflationary cosmology.
Based on the ultraviolet asymptotic freedom of nonlocal quantum gravity, we show that the trans-Planckian energy regime is unattainable in laboratory experiments. As physical implications, it turns out that the violation of causality, typical of nonlocal field theories, can never be detected in particle accelerators, while the asymptotic freedom of the theory provides an elegant solution to the so called trans-Planckian cosmological problem.
We study the constraint on the inflationary energy scale from the recently proposed Trans-Planckian Censorship Conjecture (TCC). We find a universal upper bound on the inflationary Hubble expansion rate $H_\text{inf}$ which is solely determined by the reheating temperature $T_\text{rh}$: $H_\text{inf}/M_\text{Pl}\lesssim T_0/T_\text{rh}$, where $T_0$ is the photon temperature today. The upper limit can be saturated by a post-inflationary oscillatory stage with the critical equation-of-state parameter $w\approx-1/3$, or by an inflation model with multiple stages. In the lowest reheating tempera…
In this paper, we discuss about the possibility to enhance the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ under the condition of Trans-Planckian censorship conjecture (TCC), thus $r\sim O(10^{-3})$ could be observable within the sensitivity of future experiments. We make use of the scalar-tensor theory where inflaton is nonminimally coupled to gravity. After demonstrating that the TCC condition could be modified in scalar-tensor theory, we show that due to the effects of modified gravity at the end of inflation, a large $r\sim O(10^{-3})$ could be allowed without violating the TCC. Moreover, the modification …
The trans-Planckian theory is a model that realizes concretely the Born reciprocity idea, which is the postulate of absolute equivalence between coordinate $x$ and momenta $p$. This model is intrinsically global, and thus it is naturally implemented in a cosmological setting. Cosmology and Born reciprocity are made for each other. Inflation provides the essential mechanism to suppress the terms coming from the dual part of the action. The trans-Planckian theory provides an explanation for the present acceleration of the universe scale factor. This is possible just considering a simple model th…
Starting from the swampland distance conjecture, and using the species bound for a large number of weakly-coupled particles, we give a derivation of the recently proposed trans-Planckian censorship conjecture. Our argument demonstrates how a quantum gravity principle requires that trans-Planckian quantum fluctuations should never cross the Hubble horizon. We also comment on how logarithmic corrections to the de-Sitter conjecture arise naturally from such an approach when one relaxes the requirement of traversing parametrically large distances on field space.
The trans-Planckian and information loss problems are usually discussed in the literature as separate issues concerning the nature of Hawking radiation. Here we instead argue that they are intimately linked, and can be understood as "two sides of the same coin" once it is accepted that general relativity is an effective field theory.
In the background of a gravitational collapse, we compute the transition amplitudes for the creation of particles for distant observers due to higher-derivative interactions in addition to Hawking radiation. The amplitudes grow exponentially with time and become of order 1 when the collapsing matter is about a Planck length outside the horizon. As a result, the effective theory breaks down at the scrambling time, invalidating its prediction of Hawking radiation. Planckian physics comes into play to decide the fate of black-hole evaporation.
During an accelerated expansion of the Universe, quantum fluctuations of sub-Planckian size can be stretched outside the horizon and be regarded effectively classical. Recently, it has been conjectured that such horizon-crossing of trans-Planckian modes never happens inside theories of quantum gravity (the trans-Planckian censorship conjecture, TCC). We point out several conceptual problems of this conjecture, which is in itself formulated as a statement on the restriction of possible scenarios in a theory: by contrast a standard swampland conjecture is a restriction of possible theories in th…
A long-standing problem of theoretical physics is the exceptionally small value of the cosmological constant $Λ\sim 10^{-120}$ measured in natural Planckian units. Here we derive this tiny number from a toroidal string cosmology based on closed strings. In this picture the dark energy arises from the correlation between momentum and winding modes that for short distances has an exponential fall-off with increasing values of the momenta. The freeze-out by the expansion of the background universe for these transplanckian modes may be interpreted as a frozen condensate of the closed-string modes i…
Inflationary cosmology has become one of the cornerstones of modern cosmology. Inflation was the first theory within which it was possible to make predictions about the structure of the Universe on large scales, based on causal physics. The development of the inflationary Universe scenario has opened up a new and extremely promising avenue for connecting fundamental physics with experiment. This article summarizes the principles of inflationary cosmology, discusses progress in the field, focusing in particular on the mechanism by which initial quantum vacuum fluctuations develop into the seeds…
We rediscuss the main Cosmological Problems as illusions originated from our ignorance of the hidden information holographically stored in {\it vacuo}. The Cosmological vacuum state is full of a large number of dynamical quantum hairs, dubbed {\it hairons}, which dominate the Cosmological Entropy. We elaborate on the Cosmological Constant (CC) problem, in both the dynamical and time-constant possibilities. We show that all dangerous quantum mixings between the CC and the Planck energy scales are exponentially suppressed as an entropic collective effect of the hairon environment. As a consequen…
