Standard statistical mechanical or condensed matter arguments tell us that bulk properties of a physical system do not depend too much on boundary conditions. Random tilings of large regions provide counterexamples to such intuition, as illustrated by the famous 'arctic circle theorem' for dimer coverings in two dimensions. In these notes, I discuss such examples in the context of critical phenomena, and their relation to 1+1d quantum particle models. All those turn out to share a common feature: they are inhomogeneous, in the sense that local densities now depend on position in the bulk. I explain how such problems may be understood using variational (or hydrodynamic) arguments, how to treat long range correlations, and how non trivial edge behavior can occur. While all this is done on the example of the dimer model, the results presented here have much greater generality. In that sense the dimer model serves as an opportunity to discuss broader methods and results. [These notes require only a basic knowledge of statistical mechanics.]
The tilings of lozenges in 2 dimensions and of rhomboedra in 3 dimensions are studied when they are constrained by fixed boundary conditions. We establish a link between those conditions and free or periodic boundary ones: the entropy is written as a functional integral which is treated via a saddle-point method. Then we can exhibit the dominant states of the statistical ensemble of tilings and show that they can display a strong structural inhomogeneity caused by the boundary. This inhomogeneity is responsible for a difference of entropy between the studied fixed boundary tilings and free bou…
We perform numerical studies including Monte Carlo simulations of high rotational symmetry random tilings. For computational convenience, our tilings obey fixed boundary conditions in regular polygons. Such tilings are put in correspondence with algorithms for sorting lists in computer science. We obtain statistics on path counting and vertex coordination which compare well with predictions of mean-field theory and allow estimation of the configurational entropy, which tends to the value 0.568 per vertex in the limit of continuous symmetry. Tilings with phason strain appear to share the same e…
Some combinatorial properties of fixed boundary rhombus random tilings with octagonal symmetry are studied. A geometrical analysis of their configuration space is given as well as a description in terms of discrete dynamical systems, thus generalizing previous results on the more restricted class of codimension-one tilings. In particular this method gives access to counting formulas, which are directly related to questions of entropy in these statistical systems. Methods and tools from the field of enumerative combinatorics are used.
At the free-fermion point, the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions (DWBC) can be related to the Aztec diamond, a domino tiling problem. We study the mapping on the level of complete statistics for general domains and boundary conditions. This is obtained by associating to both models a set of non-intersecting lines in the Lindstroem-Gessel-Viennot (LGV) scheme. One of the consequence for DWBC is that the boundaries of the ordered phases are described by the Airy process in the thermodynamic limit.
We show that the number of configurations of the 20 Vertex model on certain domains with domain wall type boundary conditions is equal to the number of domino tilings of Aztec-like triangles, proving a conjecture from [P. Di Francesco and E. Guitter, Twenty-Vertex Model with Domain Wall Boundaries and Domino Tilings, Elec. Jour. of Combinatorics 27 (2020), no. 2, P2.13]. The result is based on the integrability of the 20 Vertex model and uses a connection to the U-turn boundary 6 Vertex model to re-express the number of 20 Vertex configurations as a simple determinant, which is then related to…
The exactly solvable four-vertex model on a square grid with the different boundary conditions is considered. The application of the Algebraic Bethe Ansatz method allows to calculate the partition function of the model. For the fixed boundary conditions the connection of the scalar product of the state vectors with the generating function of the column and row strict boxed plane partitions is established. Tiling model on a periodic grid is discussed.
Three-dimensional integer partitions provide a convenient representation of codimension-one three-dimensional random rhombus tilings. Calculating the entropy for such a model is a notoriously difficult problem. We apply transition matrix Monte Carlo simulations to evaluate their entropy with high precision. We consider both free- and fixed-boundary tilings. Our results suggest that the ratio of free- and fixed-boundary entropies is $σ_{free}/σ_{fixed}=3/2$, and can be interpreted as the ratio of the volumes of two simple, nested, polyhedra. This finding supports a conjecture by Linde, Moore an…
We study random tiling models in the limit of high rotational symmetry. In this limit a mean-field theory yields reasonable predictions for the configurational entropy of free boundary rhombus tilings in two dimensions. We base our mean-field theory on an iterative tiling construction inspired by the work of de Bruijn. In addition to the entropy, we consider correlation functions, phason elasticity and the thermodynamic limit. Tilings of dimension other than two are considered briefly.
We consider the triangular lattice ice model (20-Vertex model) with four types of domain-wall type boundary conditions. In types 1 and 2, the configurations are shown to be equinumerous to the quarter-turn symmetric domino tilings of an Aztec-like holey square, with a central cross-shaped hole. The proof of this statement makes extensive use of integrability and of a connection to the 6-Vertex model. The type 3 configurations are conjectured to be in same number as domino tilings of a particular triangle. The four enumeration problems are reformulated in terms of four types of Alternating Phas…
As part of our ongoing work on the enumeration of symmetry classes of lozenge tilings of hexagons with certain four-lobed structures removed from their center, we consider the case of the tilings which are both vertically and horizontally symmetric. In order to handle this, we need an extension of Kuo's graphical condensation method, which works in the presence of free boundary. Our results allow us to compute exactly the correlation in a sea of dimers of a macroscopic dent in a 90 degree wedge with mixed boundary conditions. We use previous results to compute the correlation of the correspond…
Two-dimensional random tilings of rhombi can be seen as projections of two-dimensional membranes embedded in hypercubic lattices of higher dimensional spaces. Here, we consider tilings projected from a $D$-dimensional space. We study the limiting case, when the quantity $D$, and therefore the number of different species of tiles, become large. We had previously demonstrated [ICQ6] that, in this limit, the thermodynamic properties of the tiling become independent of the boundary conditions. The exact value of the limiting entropy and finite $D$ corrections remain open questions. Here, we develo…
We consider the domino tilings of an Aztec diamond with a cut-off corner of macroscopic square shape and given size, and address the bulk properties of tilings as the size is varied. We observe that the free energy exhibits a third-order phase transition when the cut-off square, increasing in size, reaches the arctic ellipse---the phase separation curve of the original (unmodified) Aztec diamond. We obtain this result by studying the thermodynamic limit of certain nonlocal correlation function of the underlying six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions, the so-called emptiness form…
We perform Transition matrix Monte Carlo simulations to evaluate the entropy of rhombus tilings with fixed polygonal boundaries and 2D-fold rotational symmetry. We estimate the large-size limit of this entropy for D=4 to 10. We confirm analytic predictions of N. Destainville et al., J. Stat. Phys. 120, 799 (2005) and M. Widom et al., J. Stat. Phys. 120, 837 (2005), in particular that the large size and large D limits commute, and that entropy becomes insensible to size, phason strain and boundary conditions at large D. We are able to infer finite D and finite size scalings of entropy. We also …
We propose a new example of discrete holography that provides a new step towards establishing the AdS/CFT duality for discrete spaces. A class of boundary Hamiltonians is obtained in a natural way from regular tilings of the hyperbolic Poincaré disk, via an inflation rule that allows to construct the tiling using concentric layers of tiles. The models in this class are aperiodic spin chains, whose sequences of couplings are obtained from the bulk inflation rule. We explicitly choose the aperiodic XXZ spin chain with spin 1/2 degrees of freedom as an example. The properties of this model are st…
When magnetic moments (spins) are regularly arranged in a geometry of a triangular motif, the spins may not satisfy simultaneously their interactions with their neighbors. This phenomenon, called frustration, leads to numerous energetically equivalent magnetic states (ground states), which results in exotic states such as spin liquid and spin ice. Here we report an alternative situation: a system that, classically, is to be a liquid in the clean limit freezes into a glassy state induced by quantum fluctuations. The case in point is a frustrated magnet in which spins are arranged in a triangula…
Let $\ell$ be a fixed vertical lattice line of the unit triangular lattice in the plane, and let $\Cal H$ be the half plane to the left of $\ell$. We consider lozenge tilings of $\Cal H$ that have a triangular gap of side-length two and in which $\ell$ is a free boundary - i.e., tiles are allowed to protrude out half-way across $\ell$. We prove that the correlation function of this gap near the free boundary has asymptotics $\frac{1}{4πr}$, $r\to\infty$, where $r$ is the distance from the gap to the free boundary. This parallels the electrostatic phenomenon by which the field of an electric ch…
We address the question of the dependence of the bulk free energy on boundary conditions for the six vertex model. Here we compare the bulk free energy for periodic and domain wall boundary conditions. Using a determinant representation for the partition function with domain wall boundary conditions, we derive Toda differential equations and solve them asymptotically in order to extract the bulk free energy. We find that it is different and bears no simple relation with the free energy for periodic boundary conditions. The six vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions is closely relate…
This is a historical note. Bethe Ansatz solvable models are considered, for example XXZ Heisenberg anti-ferromagnet and Bose gas with delta interaction. Periodic boundary conditions lead to Bethe equation. The square of the norm of Bethe wave function is equal to a determinant of linearized system of Bethe equations (determinant of matrix of second derivatives of Yang action). The proof was first published in Communications in Mathematical Physics, vol 86, page 391 in l982. Also domain wall boundary conditions for 6 vertex model were discovered in the same paper [see Appendix D]. These play an…
The free energies of six-vertex models on general domain D with various boundary conditions are investigated with the use of the n-equivalence relation which classifies the thermodynamic limit properties. It is derived that the free energy of the six-vertex model on the rectangle is unique in the limit in which both the height and the width goes to infinity. It is derived that the free energies of the model on D are classified through the densities of left/down arrows on the boundary. Specifically the free energy is identical to that obtained by Lieb and Sutherland with the cyclic boundary con…
Motivated by recent experimental breakthroughs in realizing hyperbolic lattices in superconducting waveguides and electric circuits, we compute the Hofstadter butterfly on regular hyperbolic tilings. By utilizing large hyperbolic lattices with periodic boundary conditions, we obtain the true hyperbolic bulk spectrum that is unaffected by contributions from boundary states. Our results reveal that the butterfly spectrum with large extended gapped regions prevails and that its shape is universally determined by the number of edges of the fundamental tile, while the fractal structure is lost in s…
We study a model of strongly correlated electrons on the square lattice which exhibits charge frustration and quantum critical behavior. The potential is tuned to make the interactions supersymmetric. We establish a rigorous mathematical result which relates quantum ground states to certain tiling configurations on the square lattice. For periodic boundary conditions this relation implies that the number of ground states grows exponentially with the linear dimensions of the system. We present substantial analytic and numerical evidence that for open boundary conditions the system has gapless e…
