Micro-physical processes on interstellar dust surfaces are tightly connected to dust properties (i.e. dust composition, size and shape) and play a key role in numerous phenomena in the interstellar medium (ISM). The large disparity in physical conditions (i.e. density, gas temperature) in the ISM triggers an evolution of dust properties. The analysis of how dust evolves with the physical conditions is a stepping-stone towards a more thorough understanding of interstellar dust. The aim of this paper is to highlight dust evolution in the Horsehead Nebula PDR region. We use Spitzer/IRAC (3.6, 4.5, 5.8 and 8 μm), Spitzer/MIPS (24 μm) together with Herschel/PACS (70 and 160 μm) and Herschel/SPIRE (250, 350 and 500 μm) to map the spatial distribution of dust in the Horsehead over the entire emission spectral range. We model dust emission and scattering using the THEMIS interstellar dust model together with the 3D radiative transfer code SOC. We find that the nano-grains dust-to-gas ratio in the irradiated outer part of the Horsehead is 6 to 10 times lower than in the diffuse ISM. Their minimum size is 2 to 2.25 times larger than in the diffuse ISM and the power-law exponent of their size distribution, 1.1 to 1.4 times lower than in the diffuse ISM. Regarding the denser part of the Horsehead, it is necessary to use evolved grains (i.e. aggregates, with or without an ice mantle). It is not possible to explain the observations using grains from the diffuse medium. We therefore propose the following scenario to explain our results. In the outer part of the Horsehead, all the nano-grains have not yet had time to re-form completely through photo-fragmentation of aggregates and the smallest of the nano-grains that are sensitive to the radiation field are photo-destroyed. In the inner part of the Horsehead, grains most likely consist of multi-compositional, mantled aggregates.
We present a summary of our previous investigations of the physical and chemical structure of the Horsehead nebula, and discuss how these studies led to advances on the understanding of the impact of FUV radiation on the structure of dense interstellar clouds. Specific molecular tracers can be used to isolate different environments, that are more sensitive to changes in the FUV radiation or density than the classical tracers of molecular gas : the CO isotopologues or the dust (sub)millimeter continuum emission. They include the HCO or CCH radicals for the FUV illuminated interfaces, or the mol…
Context: Observations of small carbon-bearing molecules such as CCH, C4H, c-C3H2, and HCO in the Horsehead Nebula have shown these species to have higher abundances towards the edge of the source than towards the center. Aims: Given the determination of a wide range of values for zeta (s-1), the total ionization rate of hydrogen atoms, and the proposal of a column-dependent zeta(N_H), where N_H is the total column of hydrogen nuclei, we desire to determine if the effects of zeta(N_H) in a single object with spatial variation can be observable. We chose the Horsehead Nebula because of its geome…
A wide variety of molecules have recently been detected in the Horsehead nebula photodissociation region (PDR) suggesting that: (i) gas-phase and grain chemistries should both contribute to the formation of organic molecules, and (ii) far-ultraviolet (FUV) photodesorption may explain the release into the gas phase of grain surface species. In order to tackle these specific problems and more generally in order to better constrain the chemical structure of these types of environments we present a study of the Horsehead nebula gas-grain chemistry. To do so we used the 1D astrochemical gas-grain c…
We present the first detection of neutral atomic oxygen (3P_1-3P_2 fine structure line at ~63um) toward the Horsehead photodissociation region (PDR). The cloud has been mapped with the Spitzer Space Telescope at far-IR (FIR) wavelengths using MIPS in the spectral energy distribution (SED) mode. The [OI]63um line peaks at the illuminated edge of the cloud at AV~0.1-0.5 (inward the gas becomes too cold and outward the gas density drops). The luminosity carried by the [OI]63um line represents a significant fraction of the total FIR dust luminosity (I_63/I_FIR~4x10^-3). We analyze the dust continu…
Aims: For the first time we investigate the role of the grain surface chemistry in the Horsehead Photo-dissociation region (PDR). Methods: We performed deep observations of several H2CO rotational lines toward the PDR and its associated dense-core in the Horsehead nebula, where the dust is cold ($\Td \simeq 20-30$ K). We complemented these observations with a map of the p-H2CO $~3_{03}-2_{02}$ line at 218.2 GHz (with 12" angular resolution). We determine the H2CO abundances using a detailed radiative transfer analysis and compare these results with PDR models that include either pure gas-phase…

The large disparity in physical conditions from the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) to denser clouds such as photon-dominated regions (PDRs) triggers an evolution of the dust properties (i.e. composition, size, and shape). The gas physics and chemistry are tightly connected to these dust properties and are therefore affected by dust evolution and especially the nano-grain depletion in the outer irradiated part of PDRs. We highlight the influence of nano-grain depletion on the gas physics and chemistry in the Horsehead nebula, a prototypical PDR. We used a model for atomic and molecular gas i…

This article presents the results of a study concerning interstellar molecules which are useful for the bookkeeping of the organic content of the universe and for providing a glimpse into prebiotic conditions on Earth and in other environments in the universe. We explored production channels for astrobiological relevant nitrogen-bearing cyclic molecules (N-heterocycles), e. g. pyrrole and pyridine. The present simulations demonstrate how the exploration of a few possible routes of production of N-heterocycles resulted in significant abundances for these species. One particularly efficient clas…
Aims. Our goal is to complete the inventory of S-bearing molecules and their abundances in the prototypical photodissociation region (PDR) the Horsehead nebula to gain insight into sulphur chemistry in UV irradiated regions. Based on the WHISPER millimeter (mm) line survey, our goal is to provide an improved and more accurate description of sulphur species and their abundances towards the core and PDR positions in the Horsehead. Methods. The Monte Carlo Markov chain (MCMC) methodology and the molecular excitation and radiative transfer code RADEX were used to explore the parameter space and de…

We study evolution of hydrogenated amorphous carbon (HAC) grains under harsh UV radiation in photo-dissociation regions (PDRs) near young massive stars. Our aim is to evaluate the impact of the HAC grains on formation of observed small hydrocarbons: C$_2$H, C$_2$H$_2$, C$_3$H$^+$, C$_3$H, C$_3$H$_2$, C$_4$H, in PDRs. We developed a microscopic model of the HAC grains based on available experimental results. The model includes processes of photo- and thermodesorption, accretion of hydrogen and carbon atoms and subsequent formation of carbonaceous mantle on dust surface. H$_2$, CH$_4$, C$_2$H$_2…
This work presents the results of a theoretical study that analyzed the possibility of nucleobases to form in the interstellar medium, in the Horsehead nebula, which is a region considered an archetype of molecular cloud. Performing the Meudon PDR code, the reactions of the nitrogen bases formation from formamide, which is a precursor compound identified in several interstellar environment, where simulated. The model showed that at least cytosine and uracil presented significant abundances. Finally, from thermochemical and quantum calculations, a investigation was carried out on the formation …
We have constructed MOCASSIN photoionization plus dust radiative transfer models for the Crab Nebula core-collapse supernova (CCSN) remnant, using either smooth or clumped mass distributions, in order to determine the chemical composition and masses of the nebular gas and dust. We computed models for several different geometries suggested for the nebular matter distribution but found that the observed gas and dust spectra are relatively insensitive to these geometries, being determined mainly by the spectrum of the pulsar wind nebula which ionizes and heats the nebula. Smooth distribution mode…
We investigate resolved kpc-scale stellar and nebular dust distribution in eight star-forming galaxies at z~0.4 in the GOODS fields. Constructing the observed Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) per pixel, based on seven bands photometric data from HST/ACS and WFC3, we performed pixel-by-pixel SED fits to population synthesis models and estimated small-scale distribution of stellar dust extinction. We use Halpha / Hbeta nebular emission line ratios from Keck/DEIMOS high resolution spectra at each spatial resolution element to measure the amount of attenuation faced by ionized gas at different…
Recent far-infrared (IR) observations of supernova remnants (SNRs) have revealed significantly large amounts of newly-condensed dust in their ejecta, comparable to the total mass of available refractory elements. The dust masses derived from these observations assume that all the grains of a given species radiate at the same temperature, regardless of the dust heating mechanism or grain radius. In this paper, we derive the dust mass in the ejecta of the Crab Nebula, using a physical model for the heating and radiation from the dust. We adopt a power-law distribution of grain sizes and two diff…
We calculate dust spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for a range of grain sizes and compositions, using physical properties appropriate for five pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) from which dust emission associated with the ejecta has been detected. By fitting the observed dust SED with our models, with the number of grains of different sizes as the free parameters, we are able to determine the grain size distribution and total dust mass in each PWN. We find that all five PWNe require large ($\ge 0.1 \, {\rm μm}$) grains to make up the majority of the dust mass, with strong evidence for the presenc…
Three Luminous Blue Variables (LBVs) are located in and near the Quintuplet Cluster at the Galactic Center: the Pistol star, G0.120-0.048, and qF362. We present imaging at 19, 25, 31, and 37 μm of the region containing these three LBVs, obtained with SOFIA using FORCAST. We argue that the Pistol and G0.120-0.048 are identical ``twins" that exhibit contrasting nebulae due to the external influence of their different environments. Our images reveal the asymmetric, compressed shell of hot dust surrounding the Pistol Star and provide the first detection of the thermal emission from the symmetric, …
We present mid-IR observations of the Galactic Luminous Blue Variable (LBV) HR Car and its associated nebula carried out with the Spitzer Space Telescope using both IRAC and IRS, as part of a GTO program aimed to study stellar ejecta from evolved stars. Our observations reveal a rich mid-IR spectrum of the inner nebula showing both solid state and atomic gas signatures. Strong low-excitation atomic fine structure lines such as $ 26.0 μ$m [\ion{Fe}{2}] and $ 34.8 μ$m [\ion{Si}{2}], indicate, for the first time, the presence of a PDR in this object class. While the physics and chemistry of the l…
The large field and wavelength range of MUSE is well suited to mapping Galactic planetary nebulae (PN). The bright PN NGC 7009 was observed with MUSE on the VLT during the Science Verification of the instrument in seeing of 0.6". Emission line maps in hydrogen Balmer and Paschen lines were formed from analysis of the MUSE cubes. The measured electron temperature and density from the MUSE cube were employed to predict the theoretical hydrogen line ratios and map the extinction distribution across the nebula. After correction for the interstellar extinction to NGC 7009, the internal dust-to-gas …
Supernovae represent significant sources of dust in the interstellar medium. In this work, deep far-infrared (FIR) observations of the Crab Nebula are studied to provide a new and reliable constraint on the amount of dust present in this supernova remnant. Deep exposures between 70 and 500 $μ$m taken by PACS and SPIRE instruments on-board the Herschel Space Telescope, compiling all observations of the nebula including PACS observing mode calibration, are refined using advanced processing techniques, thus providing the most accurate data ever generated by Herschel on the object. We carefully fi…
Supernova remnants (SNRs) are well-recognised dust producers, but their net dust production rate remains elusive due to uncertainties in grain properties that propagate into observed dust mass uncertainties, and determine how efficiently these grains are processed by reverse shocks. In this paper, we present a detection of polarised dust emission in the Crab pulsar wind nebula, the second SNR with confirmed polarised dust emission after Cassiopeia A. We constrain the bulk composition of the dust with new SOFIA/HAWC+ polarimetric data in band C 89 um and band D 154 um. After correcting for sync…

The Spitzer GLIMPSE and MIPSGAL surveys have revealed a wealth of details of the Galactic plane. We use them to study the energetics and dust properties of M16, one of the best known SFR. We present MIPSGAL observations of M16 at 24 and 70 $μ$m and combine them with previous IR data. The MIR image shows a shell inside the molecular borders of the nebula. The morphologies at 24 and 70 $μ$m are different, and its color ratio is unusually warm. The FIR image resembles the one at 8 $μ$m that enhances the molecular cloud. We measure IR SEDs within the shell and the PDRs. We use the DUSTEM model to …
We report high resolution observations of the $^{12}$CO$(1\rightarrow0)$ and $^{13}$CO$(1\rightarrow0)$ molecular lines in the Carina Nebula and the Gum 31 region obtained with the 22-m Mopra telescope as part of the The Mopra Southern Galactic Plane CO Survey. We cover 8 deg$^2$ from $l = 285^{\circ}$ to 290$^{\circ}$, and from $b = -1.5^{\circ}$ to +0.5$^{\circ}$. The molecular gas column density distributions from both tracers have a similar range of values. By fitting a grey-body function to the observed infrared spectral energy distribution from Herschel maps, we derive gas column densiti…
We present a new set of high resolution dust extinction maps of the nearby and essentially starless Pipe Nebula molecular cloud. The maps were constructed from a concerted deep near-infrared imaging survey with the ESO-VLT, ESO-NTT, CAHA 3.5m telescopes, and 2MASS data. The new maps have a resolution three times higher than the previous extinction map of this cloud by Lombardi et al. (2006) and are able to resolve structure down to 2600 AU. We detect 244 significant extinction peaks across the cloud. These peaks have masses between 0.1 and 18.4 M_sun, diameters between 1.2 and 5.7e4 AU (0.06 a…
We present CO J=4-3 line and 3 mm dust continuum observations of a 100 kpc-scale filamentary Lyα nebula (SSA22 LAB18) at z=3.1 using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). We detected the CO J=4-3 line at a systemic z(CO)=3.093 {\pm} 0.001 at 11 σ from one of the ALMA continuum sources associated with the Lyα filament. We estimated the CO J=4-3 luminosity of L'CO(4-3)=(2.3\pm0.2)x10^9 K km s^{-1} pc^2 for this CO source, which is one order of magnitude smaller than those of typical z>1 dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) of similar far-infrared luminosity L(IR)~10^{12} Lsun. …
From existing broad-band images obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope, we located 92 globules, for which we derived positions, dimensions, orientations, extinctions, masses, proper motions, and their distributions. The globules have mean radii ranging from 400 to 2000 AU and are not resolved in current infrared images of the nebula. The extinction law for dust grains in these globules matches a normal interstellar extinction law. Derived masses of dust range from 1 to 60 x 10^(-6) solar masses, and the total mass contained in globules constitute a fraction of approximately 2% or less of the…
Recent infrared (IR) observations of freshly-formed dust in supernova remnants (SNRs) have yielded significantly lower dust masses than predicted by theoretical models and measured from high redshift observations. The Crab Nebula's pulsar wind is thought to be sweeping up freshly-formed supernova (SN) dust along with the ejected gas. The evidence for this dust was found in the form of an IR excess in the integrated spectrum of the Crab and in extinction against the synchrotron nebula that revealed the presence of dust in the filament cores. We present the first spatially resolved emission spec…
Ample evidence exists regarding supernovae being a major contributor to interstellar dust. In this work, the deepest far-infrared observations of the Crab Nebula are used to revisit the estimation of} the dust mass present in this supernova remnant. Images in filters between 70 and 500 $μ$m taken by the PACS and SPIRE instruments on-board of the Herschel Space Observatory are used. With an automated approach we constructed the spectral energy distribution of the Crab nebula to recover the dust mass. This approach makes use of several image processing techniques (thresholding, morphological pro…
The long-period Cepheid RS Pup is surrounded by a large dusty nebula reflecting the light from the central star. Due to the changing luminosity of the central source, light echoes propagate into the nebula. This remarkable phenomenon was the subject of Paper I.The origin and physical properties of the nebula are however uncertain: it may have been created through mass loss from the star itself, or it could be the remnant of a pre-existing interstellar cloud. Our goal is to determine the 3D structure of the nebula, and estimate its mass. Knowing the geometrical shape of the nebula will also all…
The Wolf-Rayet nebula M1-67 around WR124 is located above the Galactic plane in a region mostly empty of interstellar medium, which makes it the perfect target to study the mass-loss episodes associated with the late stages of massive star evolution. Archive photometric observations from WISE, Spitzer (MIPS) and Herschel (PACS and SPIRE) are used to construct the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the nebula in the wavelength range of 12-500$μ$m. The infrared (photometric and spectroscopic) data and nebular optical data from the literature are modeled simultaneously using the spectral synth…
We investigated the physical and chemical properties of the gas and dust components in a carbon-rich planetary nebula (PN) IC2165 using two-dimensional (2-D) emission-line maps with superior resolution. The extinction map is generated in a self-consistent and assumption-free manner. The circumstellar gas-to-dust mass ratio (GDR) map ranges radially from 1210 in the central nebula filled with hot gas plasma to 120 near the ionisation front. The determined GDR is comparable to ~400, which is commonly adopted for carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, and ~100 for ISM. Except for the in…
Infrared Herschel imaging and spectroscopic observations of the nebula M1-67 around the Wolf-Rayet star WR 124 have been obtained along with optical imaging observations. The infrared images reveal a clumpy dusty nebula that extends up to 1 pc. The comparison with the optical images shows that the ionized gas nebula coincides with the dust nebula, the dust and the gas being mixed together. A photodissociation region is revealed from the infrared spectroscopic analysis. The analysis of the infrared spectrum of the nebula, where forbidden emission lines of ionized elements were detected, showed …
We report the discovery in Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images of the new Herbig-Haro jet, HH 1019, located near the Tr 14 cluster in the Carina Nebula. Like other HH jets in the region, this bipolar collimated flow emerges from the head of a dark dust pillar. However, HH 1019 is unique because -- unlike all other HH jets known to date -- it is identified by a linear chain of dark, dusty knots that are seen primarily in silhouette against the background screen of the H II region. Proper motions confirm that these dark condensations move along the jet axis at high speed. [S II] emission traces …
We have modelled the near-infrared to radio images of the Crab Nebula with a Bayesian SED model to simultaneously fit its synchrotron, interstellar and supernova dust emission. We infer an interstellar dust extinction map with an average $A_{\text{V}}$=1.08$\pm$0.38 mag, consistent with a small contribution (<22%) to the Crab's overall infrared emission. The Crab's supernova dust mass is estimated to be between 0.032 and 0.049 M$_{\odot}$ (for amorphous carbon grains) with an average dust temperature $T_{\text{dust}}$=41$\pm$3K, corresponding to a dust condensation efficiency of 8-12%. This re…
We present nucleosynthesis predictions (HeCNOCl) from asymptotic giant branch (AGB) models, with diffusive overshooting from all the convective borders, in the metallicity range Z/4 < Z < 2Zsun. They are compared to recent precise nebular abundances in a sample of Galactic planetary nebulae (PNe) that is divided among double-dust chemistry (DC) and oxygen-dust chemistry (OC) according to the infrared dust features. Unlike the similar subsample of Galactic carbon-dust chemistry PNe recently analysed by us, here the individual abundance errors, the higher metallicity spread, and the uncertain du…
The abundance of O in planetary nebulae (PNe) has been historically used as a metallicity indicator of the interstellar medium (ISM) where they originated; e.g., it has been widely used to study metallicity gradients in our Galaxy and beyond. However, clear observational evidence for O self enrichment in low-metallicity Galactic PNe with C-rich dust has been recently reported. Here we report asymptotic giant branch (AGB) nucleosynthesis predictions for the abundances of the CNO elements and helium in the metallicity range Zsun/4 < Z < 2Zsun. Our AGB models, with diffusive overshooting from all…
(abridged) [...] Methods: In a continued study of the molecular core population of the Pipe Nebula, we present a molecular-line survey of 52 cores. Previous research has shown a variety of different chemical evolutionary stages among the cores. Using the Mopra radio telescope, we observed the ground rotational transitions of HCO+, H13CO+, HCN, H13CN, HNC, and N2H+. These data are complemented with near-infrared extinction maps to constrain the column densities, effective dust temperatures derived from Herschel data, and NH3-based gas kinetic temperatures. Results: The target cores are located …
Multi-wavelength observations in the sub-mm regime provide information on the distribution of both the dust column density and the effective dust temperature in molecular clouds. In this study, we created high-resolution and high-dynamic-range maps of the Pipe nebula region and explored the value of dust-temperature measurements in particular towards the dense cores embedded in the cloud. The maps are based on data from the Herschel and Planck satellites, and calibrated with a near-infrared extinction map based on 2MASS observations. We have considered a sample of previously defined cores and …
Whether supernovae are major sources of dust in galaxies is a long-standing debate. We present infrared and submillimeter photometry and spectroscopy from the Herschel Space Observatory of the Crab Nebula between 51 and 670 micron as part of the Mass Loss from Evolved StarS program. We compare the emission detected with Herschel with multiwavelength data including millimeter, radio, mid-infrared and archive optical images. We carefully remove the synchrotron component using the Herschel and Planck fluxes measured in the same epoch. The contribution from line emission is removed using Herschel …
We have estimated elemental abundances of the planetary nebula (PN) Hen2-436 in the Sagittarius (Sgr) spheroidal dwarf galaxy using ESO/VLT FORS2, Magellan/MMIRS, and Spitzer/IRS spectra. We have detected candidates of [F II] 4790A, [Kr III] 6826A, and [P II] 7875A lines and successfully estimated the abundances of these elements ([F/H]=+1.23, [Kr/H]=+0.26, [P/H]=+0.26) for the first time. We present a relation between C, F, P, and Kr abundances among PNe and C-rich stars. The detections of F and Kr support the idea that F and Kr together with C are synthesized in the same layer and brought to…
Multi-wavelength observations are mandatory to understand the physical properties of astrophysical sources. In this paper we use observations in the far infrared to radio range to derive the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the Carina nebula. To do this, we carefully subtract the irregularly varying diffuse emission from the Galactic plane, which can be of the order of 10 of the nebula flux at these wavelengths. We find that the far infrared SED can be modeled as emission from a dust population with a single temperature T_d=(34.5^{+2.0}_{-1.8}), and with a spectral index of emissivity alp…
It had been understood that astronomically observed infrared spectrum of carbon rich planetary nebula as like Tc 1 and Lin 49 comes from fullerene (C60). Also, it is well known that graphene is a raw material for synthesizing fullerene. This study seeks some capability of graphene based on the quantum-chemical DFT calculation. It was demonstrated that graphene plays major role rather than fullerene. We applied two astrophysical conditions, which are void creation by high speed proton and photo-ionization by the central star. Model molecule was ionized void-graphene (C23) having one carbon pent…
Radiation-dust driven outflows, where radiation pressure on dust grains accelerates gas, occur in many astrophysical environments. Almost all previous numerical studies of these systems have assumed that the dust was perfectly-coupled to the gas. However, it has recently been shown that the dust in these systems is unstable to a large class of resonant drag instabilities (RDIs) which de-couple the dust and gas dynamics and could qualitatively change the nonlinear outcome of these outflows. We present the first simulations of radiation-dust driven outflows in stratified, inhomogeneous media, in…
