This paper introduces a novel non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) concept named waveform-domain NOMA, which proposes the coexistence of different waveforms in the same resource element (RE). Regarding the demands of each user equipments (UEs), appropriate waveforms are assigned intelligently and decoded at the receiver side properly. Since the performance gain of power-domain NOMA compared to multi-user multiple-input-multiple-output (MU-MIMO) degrades in the case of successive interference cancellation (SIC) and channel estimation errors, NOMA is not considered as a work-item in 3GPP anymore. The novel waveform-domain NOMA concept provides a remedy for the problems of the power-domain NOMA scheme as well as flexibility in terms of reliability, latency, and energy efficiency. To mitigate SIC errors, low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes aided soft interference cancellation technique is used. As numerically evaluated, the proposed waveform-domain NOMA scheme outperforms the conventional power-domain NOMA in the power-balanced scenario.
The coexistence of different wireless communication systems such as LTE and Wi-Fi by sharing the unlicensed band is well studied in the literature. In these studies, various methods are proposed to support the coexistence of systems, including listen-before-talk mechanism, joint user association and resource allocation. However, in this study, the coexistence of different waveform structures in the same resource elements are studied under the theory of non-orthogonal multiple access. This study introduces a paradigm-shift on NOMA towards the application-centric waveform coexistence. Throughout…
Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has increased complexity and reduced spectral efficiency in visible light communications (VLC) NOMA compared to radiofrequency NOMA due to non-negative real value constraints on transmit symbols. To address this issue, we propose a generalized non-OFDM based scheme for two scenarios of indoor VLC; i) Multiple access channel (MAC), ii) Broadcast channel (BC). We evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme for MAC using successive interference cancellation (SIC) based decoding, joint maximum likelih…
In order to achieve efficient communication in the fifth generation (5G) networks, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique has been utilized in fog radio access networks (F-RANs). In this paper, we investigate the resource allocation problem in a NOMA-enabled downlink F-RAN. To maximize the weighted sum rate of NOMA users served by fog-computing-based access points (F-APs), the resource block (RB) allocation and power allocation are optimized. Specifically, we decouple the problem into RB allocation and power allocation problems. The former is modeled as a many-to-one matching game and…
In this paper, we investigate the dynamic power allocation for a visible light communication (VLC) cellular system consisting of two coordinating attocells, each equipped with one access-point (AP). The coordinated multipoint (CoMP) between the two cells is introduced to assist users experiencing high inter-cell-interference (ICI). Specifically, the coordinated zero-forcing (ZF) precoding is used to cancel the ICI at the users located near the centers of the cells, whereas the joint transmission (JT) is employed to eliminate the ICI at the users located at the edge of both cells and to improve…
In this paper, facilitated via the flexible software defined structure of the radio access units in 5G, we propose a novel dynamic multiple access technology selection among orthogonal multiple access (OMA) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) techniques for each subcarrier. For this setup, we formulate a joint resource allocation problem where a new set of access technology selection parameters along with power and subcarrier are allocated for each user based on each user's channel state information. Here, we define a novel utility function taking into account the rate and costs of acces…
Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is recognized as a promising radio access technique for the next generation wireless systems. We consider a practical downlink NOMA system with imperfect successive interference cancellation and derive bounds on the power allocation factors for a given number of users in each cluster. We propose a minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio difference criterion between two successive NOMA users in a cluster of users to achieve higher rates than an equivalent orthogonal multiple access (OMA) system. We then propose adaptive multi-user clustering and pow…
Massive MIMO is one of the key technologies to support the growth of massive access attempts by devices, such as in massive machine type communication (mMTC). The evolution of antenna array technology brought the recent extra-large scale massive multiple input multiple output (XL-MIMO) systems, seen as a promising technology for providing very high-data rates in high-user density scenarios. Spatial non stationarities and visibility regions (VRs) occur across all huge XL array extension, since its large dimension is of the same order of the distances to the user equipment (UE). Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has been recognized as a key driving technology for the fifth generation (5G) and beyond 5G cellular networks. For a practical dowlink NOMA system with imperfect successive interference cancellation (SIC), we derive bounds on channel coefficients and power allocation factors between NOMA users to achieve higher rates than an equivalent orthogonal multiple access (OMA) system. We propose an adaptive user pairing (A-UP) algorithm for NOMA systems. Through extensive simulations, we show that NOMA with imperfect SIC is not always superior to OMA. Further, the …
This paper introduces new approaches for combining non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with distributed base station (DBS) deployments. The purpose of the study is to unlock the true potentials of DBS systems in the NOMA context, since all previous works dealing with power minimization in NOMA are performed in the CBS (centralized base station) context. This work targets a minimization of the total transmit power in each cell, under user rate and power multiplexing constraints. Different techniques are designed for the joint allocation of subcarriers, antennas and power, with a particular ca…
Next-generation internet of things (IoT) applications need trillions of low-powered wireless mobile devices to connect with each other having ultra-reliability and low-latency. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is a promising technology to address massive connectivity for 5G and beyond by accommodating several users within the same orthogonal resource block. Therefore, this article explores hybrid NOMA (HNOMA) for massive multiple access in the uplink scenarios due to its higher spectral efficiency. The HNOMA includes both power domain and code domain NOMA method due to diverse channel con…
In this letter, role switching and power allocation schemes are proposed to tackle user mobility in non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems. When cell center user (CCU) and cell edge user (CEU) come very close or even cross each other in NOMA pairing, channel gains of paired users violate the basic NOMA conditions. This article refers to such condition as NOMA principle violation problem (NPVP). To solve this NPVP, optimized power role switching-NOMA (OPRS-NOMA) technique is proposed. Role switching technique is used where roles of mobile users are switched on the basis of their channel …

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) schemes are being considered in 5G new radio developments and beyond. Although seminal papers demonstrated that NOMA outperforms orthogonal access in terms of capacity and user fairness, the majority of works have been devoted to the wireless terrestrial arena. Therefore, it is worth to study how NOMA can be implemented in other types of communications, as for instance the satellite ones, which are also part of the 5G infrastructure. Although communications through a satellite present a different architecture than those in the wireless terrestrial links, N…

In this paper, we derive the optimal user pairing and power allocation in uplink non orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) networks. The optimal power allocation that maximizes the sum rate is found for two user NOMA networks, while ensuring that the individual rates of NOMA users are at least equal to those they would achieve with orthogonal multiple access (OMA). Next, we prove that in a 2K user network and when the optimal power allocation is used, the optimal pairing reduces to pairing the user with index k to the user with index 2K-k+1, i.e., the user with the best channel condition and the o…
Device to Device (D2D) communication underlying cellular communication can improve the utilization efficiency of resources, and the cellular user equipment (C-UE) can utilize the rental resources for D2D user equipment (D-UE) to obtain revenue. In this paper, a new framework for optimizing the resource allocation in a millimeter-wave-non-orthogonal multiple access (mmWave-NOMA) communication for crowded venues is proposed. MmWave communications suffer from severe blockage caused by obstacles such as the human body, especially in a dense region. Thus, a detailed method for modeling the blockage events in the in-venue scenarios is introduced. Also, several mmWave access points are considered in different locations. To maximize the network sum rate, the resource allocation problem is formulated as a mixed integer non-linear programming,…

In this paper, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) networks assisted by multiple intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) with discrete phase shifts are investigated, in which each user device (UD) is served by an IRS to improve the quality of the received signal. Two scenarios are considered according to whether there is a direct link between the base station (BS) and each UD, and the outage performance is analyzed for each of them. Specifically, the asymptotic expressions for the upper and lower bounds of the outage probability in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime are derived. Foll…
We consider a free space optical (FSO) backhauling system which consists of two base stations (BSs) and one central unit (CU). We propose to employ non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) for FSO backhauling where both BSs transmit at the same time and in the same frequency band to the same photodetector at the CU. We develop a dynamic NOMA scheme which determines the optimal decoding order as a function of the channel state information at the CU and the quality of service requirements of the BSs, such that the outage probabilities of both BSs are jointly minimized. Moreover, we analyze the perf…
Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) allows multiple users to share a time-frequency resource block by using different power levels. An important challenge associated with NOMA is the selection of users that share a resource block. This is referred to as clustering, which generally exploits the channel disparity (i.e. distinctness) among the users. We discuss clustering and the related resource allocation challenges (e.g. power allocation) associated with NOMA and highlight open problems that require further investigation. We review the related literature on exploiting channel disparity for c…

Unlike the heuristics for NOMA user-channel allocation, the presented results are guaranteed to converge to a solution. In addition, the solutions are stable. Generally, the results apply to any NOMA system. Unlike the orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) resource allocation problem, the core matching is not the solution to NOMA resource allocation. The conditions under wh…

The error performance of the Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) technique suffers from the inter-user interference (IUI) although it is a promising technique for the future wireless systems in terms of the achievable sum rate. Hence, a multiple access technique design with limited IUI and competitive to NOMA in terms of spectral efficiency is essential. In this letter, we consider so-called spatial multiple access (SMA) which is based on applying the principle of spatial modulation (SM) through the different users' data streams, as a strong alternative to MIMO-NOMA systems. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is a promising multiple access technique for beyond fifth generation (B5G) cellular wireless networks, where several users can be served on a single time-frequency resource block, using the concepts of superposition coding at the transmitter and selfinterference cancellation (SIC) at the receiver. For terrestrial networks, the achievable performance gains of NOMA over traditional orthogonal multiple access (OMA) are well-known. However, the achievable performance of NOMA in aerial networks, compared to terrestrial networks, is not well-understood. In this …
Being able to accommodate multiple simultaneous transmissions on a single channel, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) appears as an attractive solution to support massive machine type communication (mMTC) that faces a massive number of devices competing to access the limited number of shared radio resources. In this paper, we first analytically study the throughput performance of NOMA-based random access (RA), namely NOMA-RA. We show that while increasing the number of power levels in NOMA-RA leads to a further gain in maximum throughput, the growth of throughput gain is slower than linear.…

To cope with the explosive traffic growth of next-generation wireless communications, it is necessary to design next-generation multiple access techniques that can provide higher spectral efficiency as well as larger-scale connectivity. As a promising candidate, power-domain non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has been widely studied. In conventional power-domain NOMA, multiple users are multiplexed in the same time and frequency band by different preset power levels, which, however, may limit the spectral efficiency under practical finite alphabet inputs. Inspired by the concept of spatial …

This work aims at further developing NOMA-CoMAC for next-generation multimodal sensor networks, where a multimodal sensor monitors several environmental parameters such as temperature, pollution, humidity, or pressure. We demonstrate that our proposed scheme achieves an MSE value approximately 0.7 lower at E_b/N_o = 1 dB in comparison to that for the average sum-channel…
This letter proposes a simple design of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) transmission, which can ensure that more users are served on each orthogonal spatial direction than spatial division multiple access (SDMA). In particular, by employing IRS, the directions of users' channel vectors can be effectively aligned, which facilitates the implementation of NOMA. Both analytical and simulation results are provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed IRS-NOMA scheme and also study the impact of hardware impairments on IRS-NOMA.
Non Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) is a key technique to satisfy large users densities in future wireless networks. However, NOMA may provide poor performance compared to Orthogonal Multiple Access (OMA) due to inter-user interference. In this paper, we obtain closed-form expressions of the uplink NOMA and OMA throughputs when no Channel State Information at Transmitter (CSIT) is available, and of the average data rates assuming that instantaneous rates should be larger than a minimum threshold when full CSIT is available. Analytical comparisons of OMA and NOMA prove that there is no global…

Inspired by the solid foundations from the information theory perspective, NOMA has rekindled the interests of researchers as a benefit of the recent advancement in signal processing and silicon technologies. However, comprehen…
A new multiple access (MA) strategy, referred to as non orthogonal multiple access - Relevant (NOMA-R), allows selecting NOMA when this increases all individual rates, i.e., it is beneficial for both strong(er) and weak(er) individual users. This letter provides a performance analysis of the NOMA-R strategy in uplink networks with statistical delay constraints. Closed-form expressions of the effective capacity (EC) are provided in two-users networks, showing that the strong user always achieves a higher EC with NOMA-R. Regarding the network's sum EC, there are distinctive gains with NOMA-R, pa…
In this paper, we take a critical and fresh look at the downlink multi-antenna NOMA literature. Instead of contrasting NOMA with OMA, we contrast NOMA with two other baselines. The first is conventional Multi-User Linear Precoding (MULP). The second is Rate-Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA) based on multi-antenna Rate-Splitting (RS) and SIC. We show that there is some confusion about the benefits of NOMA, and we dispel the associated misconceptions. First, we highlight why NOMA is inefficient in multi-antenna settings based on basic multiplexing gain analysis. We stress that the issue lies in h…

Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) is being pursued in recent times as a suitable wireless transmission technology for use in high mobility scenarios. In this work, we propose nonorthogonal multiple acess (NOMA) based OTFS which may be called NOMA-OTFS system and evaluate its performance from system level and link level perspective. The challenge lies in the fact that while OTFS transmission technology is known for its resilience to high mobility conditions, while NOMA is known to yield high spectral efficiency in low mobility scenarios in comparison to orthogonal multiple access (OMA). We…
