We review some recent results and announce some new ones on the problem of the existence of ground states for the Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation on graphs endowed with vertices where the matching condition, instead of being free (or Kirchhoff's), is non-trivially interacting. In this category fall Dirac's delta conditions, delta prime, Fülöp-Tsutsui, and others.
We consider the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the star graph with the Kirchhoff boundary condition. We prove modified scattering for the final state problem and the initial value problem. Moreover, we also consider the failure of scattering for the Schrödinger equation with power-type long-range nonlinearities. These results are extension of the results for NLS on the one dimensional Euclidean space.
We consider the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with the subcritical power nonlinearity on a star graph consisting of $N$ edges and a single vertex under generalized Kirchhoff boundary conditions. The stationary NLS equation may admit a family of solitary waves parameterized by a translational parameter, which we call the shifted states. The two main examples include (i) the star graph with even $N$ under the classical Kirchhoff boundary conditions and (ii) the star graph with one incoming edge and $N-1$ outgoing edges under a single constraint on coefficients of the generalized Kirchhoff…
We study the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with an arbitrary real potential $V(x)\in (L^1+L^\infty)(Γ)$ on a star graph $Γ$. At the vertex an interaction occurs described by the generalized Kirchhoff condition with strength $-γ<0$. We show the existence of ground states $φ_ω(x)$ as minimizers of the action functional on the Nehari manifold under additional negativity and decay conditions on $V(x)$. Moreover, for $V(x)=-\dfracβ{x^α}$, in the supercritical case, we prove that the standing waves $e^{iωt}φ_ω(x)$ are orbitally unstable in $H^{1}(Γ)$ when $ω$ is large enough. Analogous result holds…
We study a boundary value problem related to the search of standing waves for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) on graphs. Precisely we are interested in characterizing the standing waves of NLS posed on the {\it double-bridge graph}, in which two semi-infinite half-lines are attached at a circle at different vertices. At the two vertices the so-called Kirchhoff boundary conditions are imposed. The configuration of the graph is characterized by two lengths, $L_1$ and $L_2$, and we are interested in the existence and properties of standing waves of given frequency $ω$. For every $ω>0$ on…
The nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation is considered on a periodic metric graph subject to the Kirchhoff boundary conditions. Bifurcations of standing localized waves for frequencies lying below the bottom of the linear spectrum of the associated stationary Schrodinger equation are considered by using analysis of two-dimensional discrete maps near hyperbolic fixed points. We prove existence of two distinct families of small-amplitude standing localized waves, which are symmetric about the two symmetry points of the periodic graphs. We also prove properties of the two families, in particular,…
We consider stochastic mean field games for which the state space is a network. In the ergodic case, they are described by a system coupling a Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation and a Fokker-Planck equation, whose unknowns are the invariant measure m, a value function u, and the ergodic constant $ρ$. The function u is continuous and satisfies general Kirchhoff conditions at the vertices. The invariant measure m satisfies dual transmission conditions: in particular, m is discontinuous across the vertices in general, and the values of m on each side of the vertices satisfy special compatibility co…
The tadpole graph consists of a circle and a half-line attached at a vertex. We analyze standing waves of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with quintic power nonlinearity equipped with the Neumann-Kirchhoff boundary conditions at the vertex. The profile of the standing wave with the frequency $ω\in (-\infty,0)$ is characterized as a global minimizer of the quadratic part of energy constrained to the unit sphere in $L^6$. The set of minimizers includes the set of ground states of the system, which are the global minimizers of the energy at constant mass ($L^2$-norm), but it is actually wider.…
We consider finite horizon stochastic mean field games in which the state space is a network. They are described by a system coupling a backward in time Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation and a forward in time Fokker-Planck equation. The value function u is continuous and satisfies general Kirchhoff conditions at the vertices. The density m of the distribution of states satisfies dual transmission conditions: in particular, m is generally discontinuous across the vertices, and the values of m on each side of the vertices satisfy special compatibility conditions. The stress is put on the case whe…
The paper deals with the analysis of Burgers' equation on acyclic metric graphs. The main goal is to establish the existence of weak solutions in the $TV$ -- class of regularity. A key point is transmission conditions in vertices obeying the Kirchhoff law. First, we consider positive solutions at arbitrary acyclic networks and highlight two kinds of vertices, describing two mechanisms of flow splitting at the vertex. Next we design rules at vertices for solutions of arbitrary sign for any subgraph of hexagonal grid, which leads to a construction of general solutions with $TV$ -- regularity for…
We consider a nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) posed on a graph or network composed of a generic compact part to which a finite number of half-lines are attached. We call this structure a starlike graph. At the vertices of the graph interactions of $δ$-type can be present and an overall external potential is admitted. Under general assumptions on the potential, we prove that the NLS is globally well-posed in the energy domain. We are interested in minimizing the energy of the system on the manifold of constant mass ($L^2$-norm). When existing, the minimizer is called ground state and it is…
We derive conditions for the propagation of monotone ordering properties for a class of nonlinear parabolic partial differential equation (PDE) systems on metric graphs. For such systems, PDE equations with a general nonlinear dissipation term define evolution on each edge, and balance laws create Kirchhoff-Neumann boundary conditions at the vertices. Initial conditions, as well as time-varying parameters in the coupling conditions at vertices, provide an initial value problem (IVP). We first prove that ordering properties of the solution to the IVP are preserved when the initial conditions an…
In this paper we consider the homogenization of a time-dependent heat conduction problem on a planar one-dimensional periodic structure. On the edges of a graph the one-dimensional heat equation is posed, while the Kirchhoff junction condition is applied at all (inner) vertices. Using the two-scale convergence adapted to homogenization of lower-dimensional problems we obtain the limit homogenized problem defined on a two-dimensional domain that is occupied by the mesh when the mesh period $δ$ tends to $0$. The homogenized model is given by the classical heat equation with the conductivity tens…
We consider standing waves in the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation on a dumbbell graph (two rings attached to a central line segment subject to the Kirchhoff boundary conditions at the junctions). In the limit of small $L^2$ norm, the ground state (the orbitally stable standing wave of the smallest energy at a fixed $L^2$ norm) is represented by a constant solution. However, when the $L^2$ norm is increased, this constant solution undertakes two bifurcations, where the first is the pitchfork (symmetry breaking) bifurcation and the second one is the symmetry preserving bifurcation.…
