A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is developed to simulate the dynamics of meniscus formation and capillary flow between vertical parallel plates. The arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) approach was employed to predict and reconstruct the exact shape of the meniscus. The model was used to simulate the rise of water and the evolution of the meniscus in vertical channels with various spacing values of 0.5 mm, 0.7 mm, and 1 mm. The validity of the model was established by comparing the steady-state capillary height and the meniscus profile with analytical solutions. The developed model presents a novel approach for simulation of capillary flow accounting for the detailed hydrodynamic phenomena that cannot be captured by analytical models.
The effect of tube diameter $D$ and capillary number $Ca$ on platelet margination in blood flow at $\approx 37\%$ tube haematocrit is investigated. The system is modelled as three-dimensional suspension of deformable red blood cells and nearly rigid platelets using a combination of the lattice-Boltzmann, immersed boundary and finite element methods. Results show that margination is facilitated by a non-diffusive radial platelet transport. This effect is important near the edge of the cell-free layer, but it is only observed for $Ca > 0.2$, when red blood cells are tank-treading rather than tum…
Local contact line pinning prevents droplets from rearranging to minimal global energy, and models for droplets without pinning cannot predict their shape. We show that experiments are much better described by a theory, developed herein, that does account for the constrained contact line motion, using as example droplets on tilted plates. We map out their shapes in suitable phase spaces. For 2D droplets, the critical point of maximum tilt depends on the hysteresis range and Bond number. In 3D, it also depends on the initial width, highlighting the importance of the deposition history.
When using appropriate surfactants, oil and aqueous foam can be intimately mixed without the foam being destroyed. In this Letter, we show that a foam, initially free of oil, can draw an oil drop under the action of capillary forces and stretch it through the aqueous network. We focus on the suction of oil by a single horizontal foam channel, known as a Plateau border. In such confined channels, imbibition dynamics are governed by a balance between capillarity and viscosity. Yet, the scaling law for our system differs from that of classical imbibition in porous media such as aqueous foam. This…
The well-known thermal capillary wave theory, which describes the capillary spectrum of the free surface of a liquid film, does not reveal the transient dynamics of surface waves, e.g., the process through which a smooth surface becomes rough. Here, a Langevin model is proposed that can capture these dynamics, goes beyond the long-wave paradigm which can be inaccurate at the nanoscale, and is validated using molecular dynamics simulations for nanoscale films on both planar and cylindrical substrates. We show that a scaling relation exists for surface roughening of a planar film and the scaling…
An analytic solution to the linearized Navier-Stokes equation is given that describes the radial flow of an incompressible, viscous fluid between two parallel, concentric annular plates.
The breakup dynamics of a capillary bridge on a hydrophobic stripe between two hydrophilic stripes is studied experimentally and numerically using direct numerical simulations. The capillary bridge is formed from an evaporating water droplet wetting three neighboring stripes of a chemically patterned surface. By considering the breakup process in a phase space representation, the breakup dynamics can be evaluated without the uncertainty in determining the precise breakup time. The simulations are based on the Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) method implemented in Free Surface 3D (FS3D). In order to const…
We study the dynamics of the interface between two immiscible fluids in contact with a chemically homogeneous moving solid plate. We consider the generic case of two fluids with any viscosity ratio and of a plate moving in either directions (pulled or pushed in the bath). The problem is studied by a combination of two models, namely an extension to finite viscosity ratio of the lubrication theory and a Lattice Boltzmann method. Both methods allow to resolve, in different ways, the viscous singularity at the triple contact between the two fluids and the wall. We find a good agreement between th…
It is shown that the averaged velocity profiles predicted by statistical mechanics of point vortices and statistical mechanics of vortex lines are practically indistinguishable for a shear flow between two parallel walls.
A small-scale, trapezoidal rigid body in the gas-filled gap between two parallel plates at different temperatures is considered. An analytical expression for the force onto the body in the direction parallel to the plates valid for an infinite Knudsen number is derived. Simultaneously, Monte-Carlo simulations are performed allowing to extend the analysis to Knudsen numbers of the order of one. The numerical and the analytical results show excellent agreement, indicating that a temperature gradient orthogonal to the plates can induce a significant force in parallel direction. This force is only…
Motivated by complex multi-fluid geometries currently being explored in fibre-device manufacturing, we study capillary instabilities in concentric cylindrical flows of $N$ fluids with arbitrary viscosities, thicknesses, densities, and surface tensions in both the Stokes regime and for the full Navier--Stokes problem. Generalizing previous work by Tomotika (N=2), Stone & Brenner (N=3, equal viscosities) and others, we present a full linear stability analysis of the growth modes and rates, reducing the system to a linear generalized eigenproblem in the Stokes case. Furthermore, we demonstrate by…
We propose a combined computational approach based on the multi-phase-field and the lattice Boltzmann method for the motion of solid particles under the action of capillary forces. The accuracy of the method is analyzed by comparison with the analytic solutions for the motion of two parallel plates of finite extension connected by a capillary bridge. The method is then used to investigate the dynamics of multiple spherical solid bodies connected via capillary bridges. The amount of liquid connecting the spheres is varied, and the influence of the resulting liquid-morphology on their dynamics i…
In this work, the linear stability of the viscous incompressible fluid flow between two parallel horizontal porous stationary plates with the assumption that there is a small constant suction at upper plate and a small constant injection at the lower plate is studied. The Navier-Stokes and continuous equations are reduced to an equation modified by the suction Reynolds number, which we call modified Orr-Sommerfeld equation. This equation is rewritten as an eigenvalue problem and is solved numerically using Matlab (Windows Version). The effect of small suction Reynolds number on the linear stabi…
We study the interaction between capillary forces and deformation in the context of a deformable capillary adhesive: a clamped, tense membrane is adhered to a rigid substrate by the surface tension of a liquid droplet. We find that the equilibrium adhesive force for this elastocapillary adhesive is significantly enhanced in comparison to the capillary adhesion between rigid plates. In particular, the equilibrium adhesion force is orders of magnitude greater when the membrane is sufficiently deformed to contact the substrate. From a dynamic perspective, however, the formation of a fluid-filled …
We investigate the effective rheology of two-phase flow in a bundle of parallel capillary tubes carrying two immiscible fluids under an external pressure drop. The diameter of each tube varies along its length and the corresponding capillary threshold pressures are considered to be distributed randomly according to a uniform probability distribution. We demonstrate through analytical calculations that a transition from a linear Darcy regime to a non-linear behavior occurs while decreasing the pressure drop $ΔP$, where the total flow rate $\langle Q \rangle$ varies with $ΔP$ with an exponent $2…
We investigate the fully developed flow between two parallel plates and the film flow over a plate in an electrically conducting fluid under the action of a parallel Lorentz force. Exact analytical solutions are derived for velocity, flow rate and wall shear stress at the plates. The velocity results are presented in figures. All these flows are new and are presented for the first time in the literature.
We study the forced displacement of a fluid-fluid interface in a three-dimensional channel formed by two parallel solid plates. Using a Lattice-Boltzmann method, we study situations in which a slip velocity arises from diffusion effects near the contact line. The difference between the slip and channel velocities determines whether the interface advances as a meniscus or a thin film of fluid is left adhered to the plates. We find that this effect is controlled by the capillary and Peclet numbers. We estimate the crossover from a meniscus to a thin film and find good agreement with numerical re…
Withdrawing a plate from a suspension leads to the entrainment of a coating layer of fluid and particles on the solid surface. In this article, we study the Landau-Levich problem in the case of a suspension of non-Brownian particles at moderate volume fraction $10\% < ϕ< 41\%$. We observe different regimes depending on the withdrawal velocity $U$, the volume fraction of the suspension $ϕ$, and the diameter of the particles $2\,a$. Our results exhibit three coating regimes. (i) At small enough capillary number $Ca$, no particles are entrained, and only a liquid film coats the plate. (ii) At lar…
We determine the globally minimum time $T$ needed to translate a thin submerged flat plate a given distance parallel to its surface within a work budget. The Reynolds number for the flow is assumed to be large so that the drag on the plate arises from skin friction in a thin viscous boundary layer. The minimum is determined using a steepest descent, where an adjoint formulation is used to compute the gradients. Because the equations governing fluid mechanics for this problem are nonlinear, multiple local minima could exist. Exploiting the quadratic nature of the objective function and the cons…
In this paper we formulate and test numerically a fully-coupled discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method for incompressible two-phase flow with discontinuous capillary pressure. The spatial discretization uses the symmetric interior penalty DG formulation with weighted averages and is based on a wetting-phase potential / capillary potential formulation of the two-phase flow system. After discretizing in time with diagonally implicit Runge-Kutta schemes the resulting systems of nonlinear algebraic equations are solved with Newton's method and the arising systems of linear equations are solved efficie…
We show how the capillary filling of microchannels is affected by posts or ridges on the sides of the channels. Ridges perpendicular to the flow direction introduce contact line pinning which slows, or sometimes prevents, filling; whereas ridges parallel to the flow provide extra surface which may enhances filling. Patterning the microchannel surface with square posts has little effect on the ability of a channel to fill for equilibrium contact angle $θ_e \lesssim 30^{\mathrm{o}}$. For $θ_e \gtrsim 60^{\mathrm{o}}$, however, even a small number of posts can pin the advancing liquid front.
In this paper, thermal conductivity measurement of liquids and nanofluids is numerically investigated by the steady state method. In which, it is required to omit the natural convection effects on the inaccuracy of measurement for heat lost quantification. One of the well-known steady-state apparatus is circular parallel-plate where the distance between circular plates is filled with liquids or nanofluids. So, it has to be designed accurately to neglect the effects of free convection. The numerical simulation is a convenient method which can omit the mentioned effects. Water, Ethylene and Ethy…
In earlier work, we provided a general description of the forces of attraction and repulsion, encountered by two parallel vertical plates of infinite extent and of possibly differing materials, when partially immersed in an infinite liquid bath and subject to surface tension forces. In the present study, we examine some unusual details of the exotic behavior that can occur at the singular configuration separating infinite rise from infinite descent of the fluid between the plates, as the plates approach each other. In connection with this singular behavior, we present also some new estimates o…
Many microfluidics devices, coating processes or diphasic flows involve the motion of a liquid meniscus on a wet wall. This motion induces a specific viscous force, that exhibits a non-linear dependency in the meniscus velocity. We propose a review of the theoretical and experimental work made on this viscous force, for simple interfacial properties. The interface is indeed assumed either perfectly compressible (mobile interface) or perfectly incompressible (rigid interface). We show that, in the second case, the viscous force exerted by the wall on the meniscus is a combination of two power l…
We report on the collision-coalescence dynamics of drops in Leidenfrost state using liquids with different physicochemical properties. Drops of the same liquid deposited on a hot concave surface coalesce practically at contact, but when drops of different liquids collide, they can bounce several times before finally coalescing when the one that evaporates faster reaches a critical size, of the order of the capillary length. The bouncing dynamics is produced because the drops are not only in Leidenfrost state with the substrate, they also experience Leidenfrost effect between them at the moment…
