We focus on a fundamental task of detecting meaningful line structures, a.k.a. semantic line, in natural scenes. Many previous methods regard this problem as a special case of object detection and adjust existing object detectors for semantic line detection. However, these methods neglect the inherent characteristics of lines, leading to sub-optimal performance. Lines enjoy much simpler geometric property than complex objects and thus can be compactly parameterized by a few arguments. To better exploit the property of lines, in this paper, we incorporate the classical Hough transform technique into deeply learned representations and propose a one-shot end-to-end learning framework for line detection. By parameterizing lines with slopes and biases, we perform Hough transform to translate deep representations into the parametric domain, in which we perform line detection. Specifically, we aggregate features along candidate lines on the feature map plane and then assign the aggregated features to corresponding locations in the parametric domain. Consequently, the problem of detecting semantic lines in the spatial domain is transformed into spotting individual points in the parametric domain, making the post-processing steps, i.e. non-maximal suppression, more efficient. Furthermore, our method makes it easy to extract contextual line features eg features along lines close to a specific line, that are critical for accurate line detection. In addition to the proposed method, we design an evaluation metric to assess the quality of line detection and construct a large scale dataset for the line detection task. Experimental results on our proposed dataset and another public dataset demonstrate the advantages of our method over previous state-of-the-art alternatives.
One of the most challenging tasks in microarray image analysis is spot segmentation. A solution to this problem is to provide an algorithm than can be used to find any spot within the microarray image. Circular Hough Transformation (CHT) is a powerful feature extraction technique used in image analysis, computer vision, and digital image processing. CHT algorithm is applied on the cDNA microarray images to develop the accuracy and the efficiency of the spots localization, addressing and segmentation process. The purpose of the applied technique is to find imperfect instances of spots within a …

This paper presents HoughNet, a one-stage, anchor-free, voting-based, bottom-up object detection method. Inspired by the Generalized Hough Transform, HoughNet determines the presence of an object at a certain location by the sum of the votes cast on that location. Votes are collected from both near and long-distance locations based on a log-polar vote field. Thanks to this voting mechanism, HoughNet is able to integrate both near and long-range, class-conditional evidence for visual recognition, thereby generalizing and enhancing current object detection methodology, which typically relies on …

Popular Hough Transform-based object detection approaches usually construct an appearance codebook by clustering local image features. However, how to choose appropriate values for the parameters used in the clustering step remains an open problem. Moreover, some popular histogram features extracted from overlapping image blocks may cause a high degree of redundancy and multicollinearity. In this paper, we propose a novel Hough Transform-based object detection approach. First, to address the above issues, we exploit a Bridge Partial Least Squares (BPLS) technique to establish context-encoded H…

We consider the problem of scale detection in images where a region of interest is present together with a measurement tool (e.g. a ruler). For the segmentation part, we focus on the graph based method by Flenner and Bertozzi which reinterprets classical continuous Ginzburg-Landau minimisation models in a totally discrete framework. To overcome the numerical difficulties due to the large size of the images considered we use matrix completion and splitting techniques. The scale on the measurement tool is detected via a Hough transform based algorithm. The method is then applied to some measurem…

This paper proposes using sketch algorithms to represent the votes in Hough transforms. Replacing the accumulator array with a sketch (Sketch Hough Transform - SHT) significantly reduces the memory needed to compute a Hough transform. We also present a new sketch, Count Median Update, which works better than known sketch methods for replacing the accumulator array in the Hough Transform.
Many techniques have been proposed to speedup the performance of classic Hough Transform. These techniques are primarily based on converting the voting procedure to a hierarchy based voting method. These methods use approximate decision-making process. In this paper, we propose a fast decision making process that enhances the speed and reduces the space requirements. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is much faster than a similar Fast Hough Transform.

The Hough transform is one of the most common methods for line detection. In this paper we propose a novel extension of the regular Hough transform. The proposed extension combines the extension of the accumulator space and the local gradient orientation resulting in clutter reduction and yielding more prominent peaks, thus enabling better line identification. We demonstrate benefits in applications such as visual quality inspection and rectangle detection.
Hough transform is a popular low-level computer vision algorithm. Its computationally effective modification, Fast Hough transform (FHT), makes use of special subsets of image matrix to approximate geometric lines on it. Because of their special structure, these subset are called dyadic patterns. In this paper various properties of dyadic patterns are investigated. Exact upper bounds on approximation error are derived. In a simplest case, this error proves to be equal to $\frac{1}{6} log(n)$ for $n \times n$ sized images, as was conjectured previously by Goetz et al.
This paper advocates the use of complex variables to represent votes in the Hough transform for circle detection. Replacing the positive numbers classically used in the parameter space of the Hough transforms by complex numbers allows cancellation effects when adding up the votes. Cancellation and the computation of shape likelihood via a complex number's magnitude square lead to more robust solutions than the "classic" algorithms, as shown by computational experiments on synthetic and real datasets.

In the framework of the Hough transform technique to detect curves in images, we provide a bound for the number of Hough transforms to be considered for a successful optimization of the accumulator function in the recognition algorithm. Such a bound is consequence of geometrical arguments. We also show the robustness of the results when applied to synthetic datasets strongly perturbed by noise. An algebraic approach, discussed in the appendix, leads to a better bound of theoretical interest in the exact case.
Classical work on line segment detection is knowledge-based; it uses carefully designed geometric priors using either image gradients, pixel groupings, or Hough transform variants. Instead, current deep learning methods do away with all prior knowledge and replace priors by training deep networks on large manually annotated datasets. Here, we reduce the dependency on labeled data by building on the classic knowledge-based priors while using deep networks to learn features. We add line priors through a trainable Hough transform block into a deep network. Hough transform provides the prior knowl…

Many bone shapes in the human skeleton are characterized by profiles that can be associated to equations of algebraic curves. Fixing the parameters in the curve equation, by means of a classical pattern recognition procedure like the Hough transform technique, it is then possible to associate an equation to a specific bone profile. However, most skeleton districts are more accurately described by piecewise defined curves. This paper utilizes an iterative approach of the Hough transform without re-voting, to provide an efficient procedure for describing the profile of a bone in the human skelet…
Current work on lane detection relies on large manually annotated datasets. We reduce the dependency on annotations by leveraging massive cheaply available unlabelled data. We propose a novel loss function exploiting geometric knowledge of lanes in Hough space, where a lane can be identified as a local maximum. By splitting lanes into separate channels, we can localize each lane via simple global max-pooling. The location of the maximum encodes the layout of a lane, while the intensity indicates the the probability of a lane being present. Maximizing the log-probability of the maximal bins hel…

Carrying out an all-inclusive survey is hardly possible and enormously space-demanding. What we care about here is emphasizing some of the most crucial milestones of the transform. We describe its variations elaborating on the basic ones such as the line and circle Hough transforms. The high demand for storage and computation time is clarified with different solution approaches. Since most uses of the transform take place o…

A huge amount of such algorithms based on Hough transform (HT) analysis has already been proposed. Despite this, we managed to find only one work where the Fast Hough Transform (FHT) usage was suggested to solve the indicated problem. Unfortunately, no study of that method was provided. In this work, we propose and study a skew detection algorithm for the document images which relies on FHT analysis. To measure this algorithm quality we use the dataset from the…

Detecting hand actions from ego-centric depth sequences is a practically challenging problem, owing mostly to the complex and dexterous nature of hand articulations as well as non-stationary camera motion. We address this problem via a Hough transform based approach coupled with a discriminatively learned error-correcting component to tackle the well known issue of incorrect votes from the Hough transform. In this framework, local parts vote collectively for the start $\&$ end positions of each action over time. We also construct an in-house annotated dataset of 300 long videos, containing 3,1…

We then construct a set of triplets of correspondences to cast votes on the 6D Hough space, representing the transformation parameters in sparse tensors. Next, a fully convolutional refinement module is applied t…

To this end, we propose an event-based processing approach for star tracking. Our technique operates on the event stream from a star field, by…

The proof is constructive and uses ensemble computation approach to build summation circuits. The proposed method has similarities with the fast Hough transform (FHT) and may be considered a form of the "divide and conquer" technique. Global voting schemes based on the Hough transform (HT) have been widely used to robustly detect lines in images. However, since the votes do not take line connectivity into account, these methods do not deal well with cluttered images. In opposition, the so-called local methods enforce connectivity but lack robustness to deal with challenging situations that occur in many realistic scenarios, e.g., when line segments cross or when long segments are corrupted. In this paper, we address the critical limitations of the HT as a line segment extractor by incorporating connectivity in the voting pr…

It allows us to get the answer in the coordinates of the input image at the output of the network and thus to calculate the coordinates of the vanishing point by simply selecting the maximum. Besides, it was proved that calculation of the transposed Fast Hough Transform can be performed using the direct one. The use of integral operators enabl…

Line detection is an important computer vision task traditionally solved by Hough Transform. With the advance of deep learning, however, trainable approaches to line detection became popular. In this paper we propose a lightweight CNN for line detection with an embedded parameter-free Hough layer, which allows the network neurons to have global strip-like receptive fields. We argue that traditional convolutional networks have two inherent problems when applied to the task of line detection and show how insertion of a Hough layer into the network solves them. Additionally, we point out some maj…

Minutia-based palmprint recognition systems has got lots of interest in last two decades. Due to the large number of minutiae in a palmprint, approximately 1000 minutiae, the matching process is time consuming which makes it unpractical for real time applications. One way to address this issue is aligning all palmprint images to a reference image and bringing them to a same coordinate system. Bringing all palmprint images to a same coordinate system, results in fewer computations during minutia matching. In this paper, using convolutional neural network (CNN) and generalized Hough transform (G…

Feature curves are largely adopted to highlight shape features, such as sharp lines, or to divide surfaces into meaningful segments, like convex or concave regions. Extracting these curves is not sufficient to convey prominent and meaningful information about a shape. We have first to separate the curves belonging to features from those caused by noise and then to select the lines, which describe non-trivial portions of a surface. The automatic detection of such features is crucial for the identification and/or annotation of relevant parts of a given shape. To do this, the Hough transform (HT)…
