Unlike their fermionic counterparts, the dynamics of Hermitian quadratic bosonic Hamiltonians are governed by a generally non-Hermitian Bogoliubov-de Gennes effective Hamiltonian. This underlying non-Hermiticity gives rise to a dynamically stable regime, whereby all observables undergo bounded evolution in time, and a dynamically unstable one, whereby evolution is unbounded for at least some observables. We show that stability-to-instability transitions may be classified in terms of a suitably generalized $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$ symmetry, which can be broken when diagonalizability is lost at exceptional points in parameter space, but also when degenerate real eigenvalues split off the real axis while the system remains diagonalizable. By leveraging tools from Krein stability theory in indefinite inner-product spaces, we introduce an indicator of stability phase transitions, which naturally extends the notion of phase rigidity from non-Hermitian quantum mechanics to the bosonic setting. As a paradigmatic example, we fully characterize the stability phase diagram of a bosonic analogue to the Kitaev-Majorana chain under a wide class of boundary conditions. In particular, we establish a connection between phase-dependent transport properties and the onset of instability, and argue that stable regions in parameter space become of measure zero in the thermodynamic limit. Our analysis also reveals that boundary conditions that support Majorana zero modes in the fermionic Kitaev chain are precisely the same that support stability in the bosonic chain.
A method to construct non-dissipative non-Dirac-hermitian relativistic quantum system that is isospectral with a Dirac-hermitian Hamiltonian is presented. The general technique involves a realization of the basic canonical (anti-)commutation relations involving the Dirac matrices and the bosonic degrees of freedom in terms of non-Dirac-hermitian operators, which are hermitian in a Hilbert space that is endowed with a pre-determined positive-definite metric. Several examples of exactly solvable non-dissipative non-Dirac-hermitian relativistic quantum systems are presented by establishing/employ…
A method to construct non-Dirac-hermitian supersymmetric quantum system that is isospectral with a Dirac-hermitian Hamiltonian is presented. The general technique involves a realization of the basic canonical (anti-)commutation relations involving both bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom in terms of non-Dirac-hermitian operators which are hermitian in a Hilbert space that is endowed with a pre-determined positive-definite metric. A pseudo-hermitian realization of the Clifford algebra for a pre-determined positive-definite metric is used to construct supersymmetric systems with one or many…
Number-non-conserving terms in quadratic bosonic Hamiltonians can induce unwanted dynamical instabilities. By exploiting the pseudo-Hermitian structure built in to these Hamiltonians, we show that as long as dynamical stability holds, one may always construct a non-trivial dual (unitarily equivalent) number-conserving quadratic bosonic Hamiltonian. We exemplify this construction for a gapped harmonic chain and a bosonic analogue to Kitaev's Majorana chain. Our duality may be used to identify local number-conserving models that approximate stable bosonic Hamiltonians without the need for parame…
The spectral analysis of a non-Hermitian unbounded operator appearing in quantum physics is our main concern. The properties of such an operator are essentially different from those of Hermitian Hamiltonians, namely due to spectral instabilities. We demonstrate that the considered operator and its adjoint can be diagonalized when expressed in terms of certain conveniently constructed operators. We show that their eigenfunctions constitute complete systems, but do not form Riesz bases. Attempts to overcome this difficulty in the quantum mechanical set up are pointed out.

We study a 1D chain of non-interacting bosonic cavities which are subject to nearest-neighbour parametric driving. With a suitable choice of drive phases, this model is strongly analogous to the celebrated Kitaev chain model of a 1D p-wave superconductor. The system exhibits phase-dependent chirality: photons propagate and are amplified in a direction that is determined by the phase of the initial drive or excitation. Further, we find a drastic sensitivity to boundary conditions: for a range of parameters, the boundary-less system has only delocalized, dynamically unstable modes, while a finit…
A paradigm model of modern atom optics is studied, strongly interacting ultracold bosons in an optical lattice. This many-body system can be artificially opened in a controlled manner by modern experimental techniques. We present results based on a non-hermitian effective Hamiltonian whose quantum spectrum is analyzed. The direct access to the spectrum of the metastable many-body system allows us to easily identify relatively stable quantum states, corresponding to previously predicted solitonic many-body structures.
In this paper, we study how to apply a periodic driving field to control stable spin tunneling in a non-Hermitian spin-orbit coupled bosonic double-well system. By means of a high-frequency approximation, we obtain the analytical Floquet solutions and their associated quasienergies and thus construct the general non-Floquet solutions of the dissipative spin-orbit coupled bosonic system. Based on detailed analysis of the Floquet quasienergy spectrum, the profound effect of system parameters and the periodic driving field on the stability of spin-dependent tunneling is investigated analytically …
We investigate the ground state and quantum dynamics of an interacting bosonic chain with the nonreciprocal hopping. In sharp contrast to its Hermitian counterpart, the ground state can support Mott insulators in systems with noninteger filling due to the competition between nonreciprocal hopping and the on-site interaction. For the quantum dynamics, conservation laws for non-Hermitian systems manifest a stark difference from their Hermitian counterpart. In particular, for any Hermitian operator that commutes with the Hamiltonian operator, its expectation value is guaranteed to be nonconserved…
The energy spectrum of bosonic excitations from a condensate is given by the spectrum of a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian constructed from a bosonic Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) Hamiltonian in general even though the system is essentially Hermitian. In other words, two types of non-Hermiticity can coexist: one from the bosonic BdG nature and the other from the open quantum nature. In this paper, we propose boundary-dependent dynamical instability. We first define the bosonic dissipative BdG Hamiltonian in terms of Green's function in Nambu space and discuss the correct particle-hole symmetry of the c…

Phase transitions in non-Hermitian systems are at the focus of cutting edge theoretical and experimental research. On the one hand, parity-time- ($\cal PT$-) and anti-$\cal PT$-symmetric physics have gained ever-growing interest, due to the existence of non-Hermitian spectral singularities called exceptional points (EPs). On the other, topological and localization transitions in non-Hermitian systems reveal new phenomena, e.g., the non-Hermitian skin effect and the absence of conventional bulk-boundary correspondence. The great majority of previous studies exclusively focus on non-Hermitian Ha…
We study the quantum entanglement and separability of Hermitian and pseudo-Hermitian systems of identical bosonic or fermionic particles with point interactions. The separability conditions are investigated in detail.
We report on experiments exploring the non-Hermitian dynamics of pairs of two-level atoms tightly confined in an optical lattice and driven by a near-resonant laser. Although spontaneous emission is negligible for the long-lived excited state, two-body dissipation arises from strong inelastic collisions between two atoms in the excited state. We demonstrate quasi-adiabatic control of the internal state of the pairs in the quantum Zeno regime where inelastic losses dominate. Preparing each atom pair in the longest-lived eigenstate of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian describing the dissipative dyna…
We study Hamiltonian systems with point interactions and give a systematic description of the corresponding boundary conditions and the spectrum properties for self-adjoint, PT-symmetric systems and systems with real spectra. The integrability of one dimensional many body systems with these kinds of point (contact) interactions are investigated for both bosonic and fermionic statistics.
We study symmetries of open bosonic systems in the presence of laser pumping. Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians describing these systems can be parity-time (${\cal{PT}}$) symmetric in special cases only. Systems exhibiting this symmetry are characterised by real-valued energy spectra and can display exceptional points, where a symmetry-breaking transition occurs. We demonstrate that there is a more general type of symmetry, i.e., rotation-time (${\cal{RT}}$) symmetry. We observe that ${\cal{RT}}$-symmetric non-Hermitian Hamiltonians exhibit real-valued energy spectra which can be made singular by sym…
We discuss the basic theoretical framework for non-Hermitian quantum systems with particular emphasis on the diagonalizability of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians and their $GL(1,\mathbb{C})$ gauge freedom, which are relevant to the adiabatic evolution of non-Hermitian quantum systems. We find that the adiabatic evolution is possible only when the eigen-energies are real. The accompanying geometric phase is found to be generally complex and associated with not only the phase of a wavefunction but also its amplitude. The condition for the real geometric phase is laid out. Our results are illustrated …

In recent years, non-Hermitian quantum physics has gained a lot in popularity in the quantum optics and condensed matter communities in order to model quantum systems with varying symmetries. In this paper, we identify a non-standard inner product that implies bosonic commutator relations for local electric and magnetic field observables and leads to a natural local biorthogonal description of the quantised electromagnetic field. When comparing this description with an alternative local Hermitian description, in which the states of local photonic particles - i.e. of so-called bosons localised …
We discuss the necessity of using non-standard boson operators for diagonalizing quadratic bosonic forms which are not positive definite and its convenience for describing the temporal evolution of the system. Such operators correspond to non-hermitian coordinates and momenta and are associated with complex frequencies. As application, we examine a bosonic version of a BCS-like pairing Hamiltonian, which, in contrast with the fermionic case, is stable just for limited values of the gap parameter and requires the use of the present extended treatment for a general diagonal representation. The d…
We consider a generalization of the non-Hermitian ${\mathcal PT}$ symmetric Jaynes-Cummings {Hamiltonian, recently introduced for studying optical phenomena with time-dependent physical parameters, that includes environment-induced decay}. In particular, we investigate the interaction of a two-level fermionic system (such as a two-level atom) with a single bosonic field mode in a cavity. The states of {the} two-level system are allowed to decay because of the interaction with the environment, {and this is included phenomenologically in our non-Hermitian Hamiltonian by introducing complex energ…
We have studied the effect of a non-Hermitian Bosonic bath on the dynamics of a two-level spin system. The non-Hermitian Hamiltonian of the bath is chosen such that it converges to the harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian when the non-Hermiticity is switched off. We calculate the dynamics of the spin system and found that the non-Hermiticity can have positive as well as negative effects on the coherence of the system. However, the decoherence can be completely eliminated by choosing the non-Hermiticity parameter and the phase of the system bath interaction appropriately. We have also studied the ef…
We study the interplay between non-Hermitian dynamics and phase synchronization in a system of $\mathcal{N}$ bosonic modes coupled to an auxiliary mode. The linearity of the evolution in such a system allows for the derivation of fully analytical results for synchronization conditions. In contrast, analysis at the level of phase dynamics, followed by a transformation to a collective basis allows a complete reduction to an all-to-all coupled Kuramoto model with known analytical solutions. We provide analytical and numerical solutions for systems ranging from a few modes to the macroscopic limit…
We analyze the spectrum and normal mode representation of general quadratic bosonic forms $H$ not necessarily hermitian. It is shown that in the one-dimensional case such forms exhibit either an harmonic regime where both $H$ and $H^\dagger$ have a discrete spectrum with biorthogonal eigenstates, and a coherent-like regime where either $H$ or $H^\dagger$ have a continuous complex two-fold degenerate spectrum, while its adjoint has no convergent eigenstates. These regimes reflect the nature of the pertinent normal boson operators. Non-diagonalizable cases as well critical boundary sectors separ…
One of the most important applications of quantum mechanics is the thermodynamic description of quantum gases. Despite the fundamental importance of this topic, a comprehensive description of the thermodynamic properties of non-Hermitian quantum gases is still lacking. Here, we investigate the properties of bosonic and fermionic non-Hermitian systems at finite temperatures. We show that non-Hermitian systems exihibit oscillations both in temperature and imaginary time. As such, they can be a possible platform to realize an imaginary time crystal (iTC) phase. The Hatano-Nelson model is identifi…
We find a new effect for the behaviour of Von Neumann entropy. For this we derive the framework for describing Von Neumann entropy in non-Hermitian quantum systems and then apply it to a simple interacting PT symmetric bosonic system. We show that our model is well defined even in the PT broken regime with the introduction of a time-dependent metric and that it displays three distinct behaviours relating to the PT symmetry of the original time-independent Hamiltonian. When the symmetry is unbroken, the entropy undergoes rapid decay to zero (so-called "sudden death") with a subsequent revival. …
The relevance in Physics of non-Hermitian operators with real eigenvalues is being widely recognized not only in quantum mechanics but also in other areas, such as quantum optics, quantum fluid dynamics and quantum field theory. %stochastic processesand so on. In this note, a quantum system described by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, which is constituted by two types of interacting bosons, is investigated. The real eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian are explicitly determined, as well as complete biorthogonal sets of eigenfunctions of the Hamiltonian and its adjoint. The diagonal representation of $H…
Recent experimental advances in Floquet engineering and controlling dissipation in open systems have brought about unprecedented flexibility in tailoring novel phenomena without any static and Hermitian analogues. It can be epitomized by the various Floquet and non-Hermitian topological phases. Topological classifications of either static/Floquet Hermitian or static non-Hermitian systems based on the underlying symmetries have been well established in the past several years. However, a coherent understanding and classification of Floquet non-Hermitian (FNH) topological phases have not been ach…
In 1956 Dyson analyzed the low-energy excitations of a ferromagnet using a Hamiltonian that was non-Hermitian with respect to the standard inner product. This allowed for a facile rendering of these excitations (known as spin waves) as weakly interacting bosonic quasi-particles. More than 50 years later, we have the full denouement of non-Hermitian quantum mechanics formalism at our disposal when considering Dyson's work, both technically and contextually. Here we recast Dyson's work on ferromagnets explicitly in terms of two inner products, with respect to which the Hamiltonian is always self…
