Recently, lots of deep networks are proposed to improve the quality of predicted super-resolution (SR) images, due to its widespread use in several image-based fields. However, with these networks being constructed deeper and deeper, they also cost much longer time for training, which may guide the learners to local optimization. To tackle this problem, this paper designs a training strategy named Pixel-level Self-Paced Learning (PSPL) to accelerate the convergence velocity of SISR models. PSPL imitating self-paced learning gives each pixel in the predicted SR image and its corresponding pixel in ground truth an attention weight, to guide the model to a better region in parameter space. Extensive experiments proved that PSPL could speed up the training of SISR models, and prompt several existing models to obtain new better results. Furthermore, the source code is available at https://github.com/Elin24/PSPL.
The deep learning technique was used to increase the performance of single image super-resolution (SISR). However, most existing CNN-based SISR approaches primarily focus on establishing deeper or larger networks to extract more significant high-level features. Usually, the pixel-level loss between the target high-resolution image and the estimated image is used, but the neighbor relations between pixels in the image are seldom used. On the other hand, according to observations, a pixel's neighbor relationship contains rich information about the spatial structure, local context, and structural…

A fast and effective motion deblurring method has great application values in real life. This work presents an innovative approach in which a self-paced learning is combined with GAN to deblur image. First, We explain that a proper generator can be used as deep priors and point out that the solution for pixel-based loss is not same with the one for perception-based loss. By using these ideas as starting points, a Bi-Skip network is proposed to improve the generating ability and a bi-level loss is adopted to solve the problem that common conditions are non-identical. Second, considering that th…

We investigate the generalization of semi-supervised learning (SSL) to diverse pixel-wise tasks. Although SSL methods have achieved impressive results in image classification, the performances of applying them to pixel-wise tasks are unsatisfactory due to their need for dense outputs. In addition, existing pixel-wise SSL approaches are only suitable for certain tasks as they usually require to use task-specific properties. In this paper, we present a new SSL framework, named Guided Collaborative Training (GCT), for pixel-wise tasks, with two main technical contributions. First, GCT addresses t…
We present a pixel recursive super resolution model that synthesizes realistic details into images while enhancing their resolution. A low resolution image may correspond to multiple plausible high resolution images, thus modeling the super resolution process with a pixel independent conditional model often results in averaging different details--hence blurry edges. By contrast, our model is able to represent a multimodal conditional distribution by properly modeling the statistical dependencies among the high resolution image pixels, conditioned on a low resolution input. We employ a PixelCNN…

Increasingly, convolution neural network (CNN) based super resolution models have been proposed for better reconstruction results, but their large model size and complicated structure inhibit their real-time hardware implementation. Current hardware designs are limited to a plain network and suffer from lower quality and high memory bandwidth requirements. This paper proposes a super resolution hardware accelerator with hardware efficient pixel attention that just needs 25.9K parameters and simple structure but achieves 0.38dB better reconstruction images than the widely used FSRCNN. The accel…
Convolutional neural network (CNN) has achieved great success on image super-resolution (SR). However, most deep CNN-based SR models take massive computations to obtain high performance. Downsampling features for multi-resolution fusion is an efficient and effective way to improve the performance of visual recognition. Still, it is counter-intuitive in the SR task, which needs to project a low-resolution input to high-resolution. In this paper, we propose a novel Hybrid Pixel-Unshuffled Network (HPUN) by introducing an efficient and effective downsampling module into the SR task. The network c…

Self-paced learning has been beneficial for tasks where some initial knowledge is available, such as weakly supervised learning and domain adaptation, to select and order the training sample sequence, from easy to complex. However its applicability remains unexplored in unsupervised learning, whereby the knowledge of the task matures during training. We propose a novel HYperbolic Self-Paced model (HYSP) for learning skeleton-based action representations. HYSP adopts self-supervision: it uses data augmentations to generate two views of the same sample, and it learns by matching one (named onlin…
Is the center position fully capable of representing a pixel? There is nothing wrong to represent pixels with their centers in a discrete image representation, but it makes more sense to consider each pixel as the aggregation of signals from a local area in an image super-resolution (SR) context. Despite the great capability of coordinate-based implicit representation in the field of arbitrary-scale image SR, this area's nature of pixels is not fully considered. To this end, we propose integrated positional encoding (IPE), extending traditional positional encoding by aggregating frequency info…

Deep hashing methods have been proved to be effective and efficient for large-scale Web media search. The success of these data-driven methods largely depends on collecting sufficient labeled data, which is usually a crucial limitation in practical cases. The current solutions to this issue utilize Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) to augment data in semi-supervised learning. However, existing GAN-based methods treat image generations and hashing learning as two isolated processes, leading to generation ineffectiveness. Besides, most works fail to exploit the semantic information in unlabel…
Convolutional neural network (CNN)-based methods have achieved great success for single-image superresolution (SISR). To tackle this problem, in this paper, we study reducing the number of parameters and computational cost of CNN-based SISR methods while maintaining the accuracy of super-resolution reconstruction performance. To this end, we introduce a novel network architecture for SISR, which strikes a good trade-off between reconstruction quality and low computati…

The segmentation of coronary arteries in X-ray angiograms by convolutional neural networks (CNNs) is promising yet limited by the requirement of precisely annotating all pixels in a large number of training images, which is extremely labor-intensive especially for complex coronary trees. To alleviate the burden on the annotator, we propose a novel weakly supervised training framework that learns from noisy pseudo labels generated from automatic vessel enhancement, rather than accurate labels obtained by fully manual annotation. A typical self-paced learning scheme is used to make the training …

Multimedia event detection has been receiving increasing attention in recent years. Besides recognizing an event, the discovery of evidences (which is refered to as "recounting") is also crucial for user to better understand the searching result. Due to the difficulty of evidence annotation, only limited supervision of event labels are available for training a recounting model. To deal with the problem, we propose a weakly supervised evidence discovery method based on self-paced learning framework, which follows a learning process from easy "evidences" to gradually more complex ones, and simul…
Guided super-resolution is a unifying framework for several computer vision tasks where the inputs are a low-resolution source image of some target quantity (e.g., perspective depth acquired with a time-of-flight camera) and a high-resolution guide image from a different domain (e.g., a grey-scale image from a conventional camera); and the target output is a high-resolution version of the source (in our example, a high-res depth map). The standard way of looking at this problem is to formulate it as a super-resolution task, i.e., the source image is upsampled to the target resolution, while tr…

Self-paced learning (SPL) mimics the cognitive mechanism of humans and animals that gradually learns from easy to hard samples. One key issue in SPL is to obtain better weighting strategy that is determined by minimizer function. Existing methods usually pursue this by artificially designing the explicit form of SPL regularizer. In this paper, we focus on the minimizer function, and study a group of new regularizer, named self-paced implicit regularizer that is deduced from robust loss function. And the interpolated high resolution image is finally deblurred by the application of wiener filter. Experimental results show that our proposed method not only substantially improves the …
Deep Neural Networks are vulnerable to adversarial attacks. Among many defense strategies, adversarial training with untargeted attacks is one of the most effective methods.
