With one exception, all known non-supersymmetric AdS$_4$ and AdS$_5$ vacua of gauged maximal supergravities that descend from string and M theory have been shown to have modes with mass below the BF bound. The remaining non-supersymmetric AdS solution is perturbatively stable within gauged maximal supergravity, and hence appears to contradict recent conjectures about the AdS stability based on the weak gravity conjecture. We show that this solution is actually unstable by exhibiting a new decay channel, which is only visible when the solution is uplifted to eleven dimensions. In particular, M2 brane probes at generic locations inside the internal manifold are attracted to the Poincaré horizon, only to be expelled as "brane jets" along certain directions of the internal manifold. Such instabilities can arise in any non-supersymmetric AdS vacuum in any dimension. When a brane-jet instability is present, the force that expels the branes is the same as the force felt by a probe brane whose mass is less than its charge.
We show the instability of two self-tuning brane world models with gauge invariant linear perturbation theory. This general method confirms a known instability of the original model with vanishing bulk potential. We also show the dynamical instability of a recently proposed self-tuning "smooth" brane model and its limit, the Randall-Sundrum model. Astonishingly, we also find instability under purely gravitational perturbations.
We review the method of constructing dipole and string loop solutions from the higher-dimensional (Euclidean) Kerr black hole. We analyse the results in various dimensions, finding solutions earlier given in the literature. Then we construct a new heterotic dipole with non-trivial dilaton and gauge fields. This can, in turn, be describes as a brane/anti-brane pair which interpolates between the KK-dipole and the H-dipole. Finally an argument is presented on the tachyonic instability by analysing the string fluctuations on the dipole background.
We explore superconducting instabilities of black branes in SO(6) gauged supergravity at finite temperature and finite R-charge densities. We compute the critical temperatures for homogeneous neutral and superconducting instabilities in a truncation of 20 scalars and 15 gauge fields as a function of the chemical potentials conjugate to the three U(1) charges in SO(6). We find that despite the imbalance provided by multiple chemical potentials there is always at least one superconducting black brane branch, emerging at a temperature where the normal phase is locally thermodynamically stable. We…
We investigate spatially modulated instabilities of magnetically charged $AdS_{2}\times\mathbb{R}^2$, $AdS_{3}\times\mathbb{R}^2$ and $AdS_{2}\times\mathbb{R}^3$ backgrounds in a broad class of theories, including those arising from KK reductions of ten and eleven dimensional supergravity. We show that magnetically charged black brane solutions in D=4,5 spacetime dimensions, whose zero temperature near horizon limit approach these backgrounds, can have instabilities that are dual to phases with current density waves that spontaneously break translation symmetry. Our examples include spatially …
We consider the classical and local thermodynamic stability of non- and near-extremal Dp-branes smeared on a transverse direction. These two types of stability are connected through the correlated stability conjecture for which we give a proof in this specific class of branes. The proof is analogous to that of Reall for unsmeared branes, and includes the construction of an appropriate two-parameter off-shell family of smeared Dp-brane backgrounds. We use the boost/U-duality map from neutral black strings to smeared black branes to explicitly demonstrate that non-and near-extremal smeared brane…
In quantum field theory, charged particles with spin $\geq 1$ may become tachyonic in the present of magnetic fluxes above some critical field, signaling an instability of the vacuum. The phenomenon is generic, in particular, similar instabilities are known to exist in open and closed string theory, where a spinning string state can become tachyonic above a critical field. In compactifications involving RR fluxes $F_{p+2}$, the quantum states which could become tachyonic by the same Nielsen-Olesen mechanism are Dp branes. By constructing an appropriate background with RR magnetic flux that tak…
We investigate the Gregory-Laflamme instability for bound states of branes in type II string theory and in M-theory. We examine systems with two different constituent branes: for instance, D3-F1 or D4-D0. For the cases in which the Gregory-Laflamme instability can occur, we describe the boundary of thermodynamic stability. We also present an argument for the validity of the Correlated Stability Conjecture, generalizing earlier work by Reall. We discuss the implications for OM theory and NCOS theory, finding that in both cases, there exists some critical temperature above which the system becom…
We introduce a notion of universality classes for the Gregory-Laflamme instability and determine, in the supergravity approximation, the stability of a variety of solutions, including the non-extremal D3-brane, M2-brane, and M5-brane. These three non-dilatonic branes cross over from instability to stability at a certain non-extremal mass. Numerical analysis suggests that the wavelength of the shortest unstable mode diverges as one approaches the cross-over point from above, with a simple critical exponent which is the same in all three cases.
We consider probe Dp-branes, p=3,5,7, in global AdS_5 x S^5, rotating along an internal direction in the S^5. These are dual to strongly interacting N=4 SYM on S^3 with massless fundamental flavours, in the presence of an R-symmetry chemical potential for flavour fermions. For massless, "AdS-filling" Dp-brane embeddings at zero temperature, we find an infinite set of threshold values of the chemical potential at which instabilities are triggered. The onset of instability is always preceded by metastability of the zero density state. From the onset values of the chemical potential, we infer tha…
In this paper we suggest a new source of perturbative decay of the KPV-state, which might have consequences for the viability of the KKLT-construction. The results do not rely on any direct enhancement of the decay due to flux accumulating on the anti-brane in transverse space. Instead, we note that the system can lower its energy through a sequence of NS5-configurations all the way to the true vacuum, without encountering a barrier, if we allow for clumping of screened charge in space time. The clumping can possibly be a parallel to the Gregory-Laflamme instability of black branes. The result…
We classify the non-supersymmetric, and perturbatively stable within $D=4$, AdS vacua of maximal $D=4$ supergravity with a dyonic ISO(7) gauging in a large sector of the supergravity. Seven such vacua are established within this sector, all of them giving rise to non-supersymmetric $\textrm{AdS}_{4} \times \textrm{S}^{6}$ type IIA backgrounds with and without non-trivial warpings and with internal fluxes. Then, we analyse the dynamics of various probe D$p$-branes in these backgrounds searching for potential brane-jet instabilities. In all these cases, such instabilities are absent. Finally, an…
We study the classical stability of a class of S-brane geometries having cosmological horizons. By considering the perturbations of the metric in these geometries we establish that their horizons are unstable in the sense that an observer trying to cross the horizon experiences an infinite flux of radiation at the instant of crossing. The backreaction of this radiation is likely to convert the horizons into curvature singularities, similar to the instability of the internal Cauchy horizon of the Reissner-Nordstrom black hole. We also compute the particle production by the time-dependent fields…
The stringy description for the instabilities in the $RR$ charged $D_{p}-\bar{D}_{p}$ pairs is now well understood in terms of the open string tachyon condensation. The quantum interpretation presumably via the stringy description for the instabilities in the $NSNS$-charged $F1-\bar{F1}$ and $NS5-\bar{NS5}$ pairs in IIA/IIB theories, however, has not been established yet. This would be partly because of the absence (for the $F1-\bar{F1}$ case) or our relatively poor understanding (for the $NS5-\bar{NS5}$ case) of their worldvolume (gauge theory) dynamics. In the present work, using the well-kn…
We review recent progress on the instabilities of black strings and branes both for pure Einstein gravity as well as supergravity theories which are relevant for string theory. We focus mainly on Gregory-Laflamme instabilities. In the first part of the review we provide a detailed discussion of the classical gravitational instability of the neutral uniform black string in higher dimensional gravity. The uniform black string is part of a larger phase diagram of Kaluza-Klein black holes which will be discussed thoroughly. This phase diagram exhibits many interesting features including new phases…
Using an expansion in large number of dimensions, taken to subleading orders, we discuss several issues concerning the Gregory-Laflamme instabilities. We map out the phase diagram of neutral and charged black strings, and comment on the possible transition in the nature of the final state of the instability at higher order in the 1/D expansion. We also discuss unstable black membranes, and show that in certain limits the preferred shape of the non-uniform phase is a triangular lattice.
We consider the M-theory lifts of configurations of type IIA D6-branes intersecting at angles. In supersymmetry preserving cases, the lifts correspond to special holonomy geometries, like conifolds and $G_2$ holonomy singularities. Transitions in which D6-branes approach and recombine lift to topology changing transition in these geometries. In some instances non-supersymmetric configurations can be reliably lifted, leading to the same topological manifolds, but endowed with non-supersymmetric metrics. In these cases the phase transitions are driven dynamically, due to instabilities localized …
In six- and seven-dimensional gauged supergravity, each scalar potential has one supersymmetric and one non-supersymmetric fixed points. The non-supersymmetric $AdS_7$ fixed point is perturbatively unstable. On the other hand, the non-supersymmetric $AdS_6$ fixed point is known to be perturbatively stable. In this note we examine the newly proposed non-perturbative decay channel, called brane-jet instabilities of the $AdS_6$ and $AdS_7$ vacua. We find that when they are uplifted to massive type IIA and eleven-dimensional supergravity, respectively, the non-supersymmetric $AdS_6$ and $AdS_7$ va…
We consider the collision in 2+1 dimensions of a black hole and a negative tension brane on an orbifold. Because there is no gravitational radiation in 2+1 dimensions, the horizon area shrinks when part of the brane falls through. This provides a potential violation of the generalized second law of thermodynamics. However, tracing the details of the dynamical evolution one finds that it does not proceed from equilibrium configuration to equilibrium configuration. Instead, a catastrophic space-time singularity develops similar to the `big crunch' of $Ω>1$ FRW space-times. In the context of clas…
We study 4d membranes in type IIA flux compactifications of the form AdS$_4 \times X_6$, where $X_6$ admits a Calabi--Yau metric. These models feature scale separation and D6-branes/O6-planes on three-cycles of $X_6$. When the latter are treated as localised sources, explicit solutions to the 10d equations of motion and Bianchi identities are known in 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ settings, valid at first order in an expansion parameter related to the AdS$_4$ cosmological constant. We extend such solutions to a family of perturbatively stable $\mathcal{N}=0$ vacua, and analyse their non-perturbative stab…
We study the effective low energy supergravity of the strongly coupled heterotic string compactified on a Calabi-Yau 3-fold with generic E8 x E8 gauge bundle. We focus on the effective potential for the chiral scalars. The effective superpotential can be studied using the dual 11-dimensional M-theory background involving insertions of M5 branes along an interval. In such backgrounds, in some regions of moduli space, the leading nonperturbative contributions are due to open membrane instantons. These instantons lead to both attractive and repulsive forces between the 5-branes and the orientifol…
We analyze the process of string vacuum destabilization due to instanton induced superpotential couplings which depend linearly on charged fields. These non-perturbative instabilities result in potentials for the D-brane moduli and lead to processes of D-brane recombination, motion and partial moduli stabilization at the non-perturbative vacuum. By using techniques of D-brane instanton calculus, we explicitly compute this scalar potential in toroidal orbifold compactifications with magnetized D-branes by summing over the possible discrete instanton configurations. We illustrate explicitly the …
Correlated stability conjecture (CSC) proposed by Gubser and Mitra [1,2] linked the thermodynamic and classical (in)stabilities of black branes. The classical instabilities, whenever occurring, were conjectured to arise as Gregory-Laflamme (GL) instabilities of translationally invariant horizons. In [3] it was shown that the thermodynamic instabilities, specifically the negative specific heat, indeed result in the instabilities in the hydrodynamic spectrum of holographically dual plasma excitations. A counter-example of CSC was presented in the context of black branes with scalar hair undergoi…

We derive dynamical equations to describe a single 3-brane containing fluid matter and a scalar field coupling to the dilaton and the gravitational field in a five dimensional bulk. First, we show that a scalar field or an arbitrary fluid on the brane cannot evolve to cancel the cosmological constant in the bulk. Then we show that the Randall-Sundrum model is unstable under small deviations from the fine-tuning between the brane tension and the bulk cosmological constant and even under homogeneous gravitational perturbations. Implications for brane world cosmologies are discussed.
We study "multitrace" deformations of large N master fields in models with a mass gap. In particular, we determine the conditions for the multitrace couplings to drive tachyonic instabilities. These tachyons represent new local instabilities of the associated nonlocal string theories. In the particular case of Dp-branes at finite temperature, we consider topology-changing phase transitions and the effect of multitrace perturbations on the corresponding phase diagrams.
We discuss UV/IR mixing effects in non-supersymmetric non-commutative U(N) gauge theories. We show that the singular (non-planar) terms in the 2- and 3-point functions, namely the poles and the logarithms, can be obtained from a manifestly gauge invariant effective action. The action, which involves open Wilson line operators, can be derived from closed strings exchange between two stacks of D-branes. Our concrete example is type 0B string theory and the field theory that lives on a collection of N electric D3-branes. We show that one of the closed string modes that couple to the field theory …
We speculate that the weak gravity conjecture applied to theories with holographic duals bans the existence of disordered phases at zero temperature. We test this idea by introducing a non-zero baryon chemical potential in a deformation of the $SU(N_c)\times SU(N_c)$ Klebanov-Witten gauge theory with broken supersymmetry and conformal invariance. At low temperature, a disordered phase dual to a black brane geometry is unstable for low chemical potentials and metastable for high values. In the metastable phase, states with a partial Higgsing of the gauge group are favored over the normal disord…
Generically, the black brane solution with planar horizons is thermodynamically stable. We find a counter-example to this statement by demonstrating that an anisotropic black brane is unstable. We present a charged black brane solution dual to a spatially anisotropic finite temperature $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills plasma at finite $U(1)$ chemical potential. This static and regular solution is obtained both numerically and analytically. We uncover rich thermodynamic phase structures for this system by considering the cases when the anisotropy constant "a" takes real and imaginary values, re…
We present a model in which a 3-brane is embedded in a warped 5-dimensional background with a dilaton and a Kalb-Ramond 2-form. We show that it is possible to find static solutions of the form of charged dS/AdS-like black hole which could have a negative mass parameter. The motion of the 3-brane in this bulk generates an effective 4-dimensional bouncing cosmology induced by the negative dark radiation term. This model avoids the instabilities that arises for previous non-singular braneworld cosmologies in a Reissner-Nordstrøm-AdS bulk.}
We discuss new types of instabilities of D=4 electrically charged AdS-Reissner-Nordström black branes that involve neutral pseudo-scalars. The instabilities spontaneously break translational invariance and are associated with the dual three-dimensional CFTs, at finite temperature and fixed chemical potential with respect to a global abelian symmetry, acquiring striped phases. We show that such instabilities are present for the infinite class of skew-whiffed $AdS_4\times SE_7$ solutions of D=11 supergravity, albeit at a lower temperature than the known superfluid instabilities.
Using the properties of gauged N=4 supergravity, we show that it is possible to derive a universal thermal effective potential that describes all possible high-temperature instabilities of the known N=4 superstrings. These instabilities are due to non-perturbative dyonic modes, which become tachyonic in a region of the thermal moduli space M={s,t,u}; M is common to all non-perturbative dual-equivalent N=4 superstrings in five dimensions. We analyse the non-perturbative thermal potential and show the existence of a phase transition at high temperatures corresponding to a condensation of 5-brane…
We study Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) terms of 5-dimensional supersymmetric $U(1)$ gauge theory compactified on $S^1/Z_2$. In this model, loop diagrams including matter hypermultiplets and brane chiral multiplets induce FI-terms localized at the fixed points. Localized FI-terms lead instabilities of bulk modes. The form of the induced FI-terms strictly depends on wave function profiles of matter multiplets. It is a non-trivial question whether the vacuum of 1-loop corrected potential is stable under radiative corrections. We investigate this issue and it is found that the stable configuration is obta…
We generalize the swampland criterion forbidding stable non-supersymmetric AdS vacua and propose a new swampland conjecture forbidding stable non-supersymmetric "locally AdS" warped throats. The conjecture is motivated by the properties of systems of fractional D3-branes at singularities, and can be used to rule out large classes of warped throats with supersymmetry breaking ingredients, and their possible application to de Sitter uplift. In particular, this allows to reinterpret the runaway instabilities of the gravity dual of fractional branes in the dP$_1$ theory, and to rule out warped thr…
In this paper we study non-perturbative instabilities in Anti de-Sitter vacua arising from flux compactifications of string models with broken supersymmetry. In the semi-classical limit, these processes drive the vacua towards lower fluxes, which translate into higher curvatures and higher string couplings. In order to shed some light on this regime, we provide evidence for a description in terms of branes, which generate near-horizon AdS throats. To this end, we study the attractor properties of the geometries near the throat, and we also characterize their asymptotics away from it. We also d…
We consider massive type IIA orientifold compactifications of the form AdS$_4 \times X_6$, where $X_6$ admits a Calabi-Yau metric and is threaded by background fluxes. From a 4d viewpoint, fluxes generate a potential whose vacua have been classified, including one $\mathcal{N}=1$ and three perturbatively stable $\mathcal{N}=0$ branches. We reproduce this result from a 10d viewpoint, by solving the type IIA equations at the same level of detail as previously done for the $\mathcal{N}=1$ branch. All solutions exhibit localised sources and parametric scale separation. We then analyse the non-pert…
We show how to extend the usual black string instability of vacuum or charged black p-branes to the anti-de Sitter background. The string fragments in an analogous fashion to the $Λ=0$ case, the main difference being that instead of a periodic array of black holes forming, an accumulation of ``mini'' black holes occurs towards the AdS horizon. In the case where the AdS space is of finite extent, such as an orbifold compactification, we show how the instability switches off below a certain compactification scale.
We show that D=5 electrically charged AdS black branes can have instabilities associated with spatially modulated p-wave superconductors with helical structure. We show that the instabilities are present within N=4 $SU(2)\times U(1)$ gauged supergravity and hence within D=10 and D=11 supergravity.
Negative energy objects generally lead to instabilities and a number of other disturbing behaviors. In particular, negative energy fluxes lead to a breakdown of the classical area theorem for black hole horizons, which can lead to violations of the second law of thermodynamics. The negative energy objects that arise in string theory involve special boundary conditions which remove the perturbative instabilities. We show that they have additional special features which allow them to evade contradiction with the second law. We identify one mechanism which applies for most orientifold planes in s…
Black branes and strings are generally unstable against a certain sector of gravitational perturbations. This is known as the Gregory-Laflamme instability. It has been recently argued that there exists another general instability affecting many rotating extended black objects. This instability is in a sense universal, in that it is triggered by any massless field, and not just gravitational perturbations. Here we investigate this novel mechanism in detail. For this instability to work, two ingredients are necessary: (i) an ergo-region, which gives rise to superradiant amplification of waves, a…
We show that scalar as well as vector and tensor metric perturbations in the Randall-Sundrum II braneworld allow normalizable tachyonic modes, i.e., possible instabilities. These instabilities require nonvanishing initial anisotropic stresses on the brane. We show with a specific example that within the Randall-Sundrum II model, even though the tachyonic modes are excited, no instability develops. We argue, however, that in the cosmological context instabilities might in principle be present. We conjecture that the tachyonic modes are due to the singularity of the orbifold construction. We ill…
We obtain the non-perturbative effective potential for the dual five-dimensional N=4 strings in the context of finite-temperature regarded as a breaking of supersymmetry into four space-time dimensions. Using the properties of gauged N=4 supergravity we derive the universal thermal effective potential describing all possible high-temperature instabilities of the known N=4 superstrings. These strings undergo a high-temperature transition to a new phase in which five-branes condense. This phase is described in detail, using both the effective supergravity and non-critical string theory in six di…
We observe a relation between closed strings tachyons and one-loop instabilities in non-supersymmetric non-commutative gauge theories. In particular we analyze the spectra of type IIB string theory on C^3/Z_N orbifold singularities and the non-commutative field theory that lives on D3 branes located at the singularity. We find a surprising correspondence between the existence or not of one-loop low-momentum instabilities in the non-commutative field theory and the existence or not of tachyons in the closed string twisted sectors. Moreover, the relevant piece of the non-commutative field theory…
We consider the d=3 N=8 SCFT dual to AdS_4\times S^7 when held at finite temperature and chemical potential with respect to a diagonal U(1)_R\subset SO(8) global symmetry and construct black brane solutions of D=11 supergravity that are associated with the superfluid instability with the highest known critical temperature. We construct a rich array of solutions using different sub-truncations of SO(8) gauged supergravity finding results that strongly depend on the truncation used. Our constructions include black brane solutions associated with the Gubser-Mitra instability which preserve the U(…
We discuss two types of instabilities which may arise in string theory compactified to asymptotically AdS spaces: perturbative, due to discrete modes in the spectrum of the Laplacian, and non-perturbative, due to brane nucleation. In the case of three dimensional Einstein manifolds, we completely characterize the presence of these instabilities, and in higher dimensions we provide a partial classification. The analysis may be viewed as an extension of the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound. One interesting result is that, apart from a very special class of exceptions, all Euclidean asymptotically Ad…
We derive a universal thermal effective potential, which describes all possible high-temperature instabilities of the known N=4 superstrings, using the properties of gauged N=4 supergravity. These instabilities are due to three non-perturbative thermal dyonic modes, which become tachyonic in a region of the thermal moduli space. The latter is described by three moduli, s,t,u, which are common to all non-perturbative dual-equivalent strings with N=4 supersymmetry in five dimensions: the heterotic on T^4xS^1, the type IIA on K3xS^1, the type IIB on K3xS^1 and the type I on T^4x S^1. The non-pert…
As is well known, classical General Relativity does not constrain the topology of the spatial sections of our Universe. However, the Brane-World approach to cosmology might be expected to do so, since in general any modification of the topology of the brane must be reflected in some modification of that of the bulk. Assuming the truth of the Adams-Polchinski-Silverstein conjecture on the instability of non-supersymmetric AdS orbifolds, evidence for which has recently been accumulating, we argue that indeed many possible topologies for accelerating universes can be ruled out because they lead t…
Perturbations and eikonal instabilities of black holes and branes in the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory and its Lovelock generalization were considered in the literature for several particular cases, where the asymptotic conditions (flat, dS, AdS), the number of spacetime dimensions $D$, non-vanishing coupling constants ($α_1$, $α_2$, $α_3$ etc.) and other parameters have been chosen in a specific way. Here we give a comprehensive analysis of the eikonal instabilities of black holes and branes for the \emph{most general} Lovelock theory, not limited by any of the above cases. Although the part o…
