In this research, we have established, through empirical testing, a law that relates the number of translating hops to translation accuracy in sequential machine translation in Google Translate. Both accuracy and size decrease with the number of hops; the former displays a decrease closely following a power law. Such a law allows one to predict the behavior of translation chains that may be built as society increasingly depends on automated devices.

Recently there has been a growing concern about machine bias, where trained statistical models grow to reflect controversial societal asymmetries, such as gender or racial bias. A significant number of AI tools have recently been suggested to be harmfully biased towards some minority, with reports of racist criminal behavior predictors, Iphone X failing to differentiate between two Asian people and Google photos' mistakenly classifying black people as gorillas. Although a systematic study of such biases can be difficult, we believe that automated translation tools can be exploited through gend…
We have implemented a machine translation system, the PolyMath Translator, for LaTeX documents containing mathematical text. The current implementation translates English LaTeX to French LaTeX, attaining a BLEU score of 53.5 on a held-out test corpus of mathematical sentences. It produces LaTeX documents that can be compiled to PDF without further editing. The system first converts the body of an input LaTeX document into English sentences containing math tokens, using the pandoc universal document converter to parse LaTeX input. We have trained a Transformer-based translator model, using Open…

Machine translation has many applications such as news translation, email translation, official letter translation etc. Commercial translators, e.g. Google Translation lags in regional vocabulary and are unable to learn the bilingual text in the source and target languages within the input. In this paper, a regional vocabulary-based application-oriented Neural Machine Translation (NMT) model is proposed over the data set of emails used at the University for communication over a period of three years. A state-of-the-art Sequence-to-Sequence Neural Network for ML -> EN and EN -> ML translations …
Cross-lingual plagiarism (CLP) occurs when texts written in one language are translated into a different language and used without acknowledging the original sources. One of the most common methods for detecting CLP requires online machine translators (such as Google or Microsoft translate) which are not always available, and given that plagiarism detection typically involves large document comparison, the amount of translations required would overwhelm an online machine translator, especially when detecting plagiarism over the web. In addition, when translated texts are replaced with their sy…
A recent study has shown that, compared to human translations, neural machine translations contain more strongly-associated formulaic sequences made of relatively high-frequency words, but far less strongly-associated formulaic sequences made of relatively rare words. These results were obtained on the basis of translations of quality newspaper articles in which human translations can be thought to be not very literal. The present study attempts to replicate this research using a parliamentary corpus. The text were translated from French to English by three well-known neural machine translatio…
Neural machine translation (NMT) is a recent and effective technique which led to remarkable improvements in comparison of conventional machine translation techniques. Proposed neural machine translation model developed for the Gujarati language contains encoder-decoder with attention mechanism. In India, almost all the languages are originated from their ancestral language - Sanskrit. They are having inevitable similarities including lexical and named entity similarity. Translating into Indic languages is always be a challenging task. In this paper, we have presented the neural machine transl…

Google Translate has been prominent for language translation; however, limited work has been done in evaluating the quality of translation when compared to human experts. Sanskrit one of the oldest written languages in the world. In 2022, the Sanskrit language was added to the Google Translate engine. Sanskrit is known as the mother of languages such as Hindi and an ancient source of the Indo-European group of languages. Sanskrit is the original language for sacred Hindu texts such as the Bhagavad Gita. In this study, we present a framework that evaluates the Google Translate for Sanskrit usin…
We present a challenge set for French --> English machine translation based on the approach introduced in Isabelle, Cherry and Foster (EMNLP 2017). Such challenge sets are made up of sentences that are expected to be relatively difficult for machines to translate correctly because their most straightforward translations tend to be linguistically divergent. We present here a set of 506 manually constructed French sentences, 307 of which are targeted to the same kinds of structural divergences as in the paper mentioned above. The remaining 199 sentences are designed to test the ability of the sy…

A desideratum of high-quality translation systems is that they preserve meaning, in the sense that two sentences with different meanings should not translate to one and the same sentence in another language. However, state-of-the-art systems often fail in this regard, particularly in cases where the source and target languages partition the "meaning space" in different ways. For instance, "I cut my finger." and "I cut my finger off." describe different states of the world but are translated to French (by both Fairseq and Google Translate) as "Je me suis coupe le doigt.", which is ambiguous as …
We propose a simple solution to use a single Neural Machine Translation (NMT) model to translate between multiple languages. Our solution requires no change in the model architecture from our base system but instead introduces an artificial token at the beginning of the input sentence to specify the required target language. The rest of the model, which includes encoder, decoder and attention, remains unchanged and is shared across all languages. Using a shared wordpiece vocabulary, our approach enables Multilingual NMT using a single model without any increase in parameters, which is signific…
Human gender bias is reflected in language and text production. Because state-of-the-art machine translation (MT) systems are trained on large corpora of text, mostly generated by humans, gender bias can also be found in MT. For instance when occupations are translated from a language like English, which mostly uses gender neutral words, to a language like German, which mostly uses a feminine and a masculine version for an occupation, a decision must be made by the MT System. Recent research showed that MT systems are biased towards stereotypical translation of occupations. In 2019 the first, …
The interest in statistical machine translation systems increases currently due to political and social events in the world. A proposed Statistical Machine Translation (SMT) based model that can be used to translate a sentence from the source Language (English) to the target language (Arabic) automatically through efficiently incorporating different statistical and Natural Language Processing (NLP) models such as language model, alignment model, phrase based model, reordering model, and translation model. These models are combined to enhance the performance of statistical machine translation (…

We propose a network independent, hand-held system to translate and disambiguate foreign restaurant menu items in real-time. The system is based on the use of a portable multimedia device, such as a smartphones or a PDA. An accurate and fast translation is obtained using a Machine Translation engine and a context-specific corpora to which we apply two pre-processing steps, called translation standardization and $n$-gram consolidation. The phrase-table generated is orders of magnitude lighter than the ones commonly used in market applications, thus making translations computationally less expen…

Recent papers in neural machine translation have proposed the strict use of attention mechanisms over previous standards such as recurrent and convolutional neural networks (RNNs and CNNs). We propose that by running traditionally stacked encoding branches from encoder-decoder attention- focused architectures in parallel, that even more sequential operations can be removed from the model and thereby decrease training time. In particular, we modify the recently published attention-based architecture called Transformer by Google, by replacing sequential attention modules with parallel ones, redu…

Machine translation is research based area where evaluation is very important phenomenon for checking the quality of MT output. The work is based on the evaluation of English to Urdu Machine translation. In this research work we have evaluated the translation quality of Urdu language which has been translated by using different Machine Translation systems like Google, Babylon and Ijunoon. The evaluation process is done by using two approaches - Human evaluation and Automatic evaluation. We have worked for both the approaches where in human evaluation emphasis is given to scales and parameters …

Although the multilingual Neural Machine Translation(NMT), which extends Google's multilingual NMT, has ability to perform zero-shot translation and the iterative self-learning algorithm can improve the quality of zero-shot translation, it confronts with two problems: the multilingual NMT model is prone to generate wrong target language when implementing zero-shot translation; the self-learning algorithm, which uses beam search to generate synthetic parallel data, demolishes the diversity of the generated source language and amplifies the impact of the same noise during the iterative learning …
Translating biomedical ontologies is an important challenge, but doing it manually requires much time and money. We study the possibility to use open-source knowledge bases to translate biomedical ontologies. We focus on two aspects: coverage and quality. We look at the coverage of two biomedical ontologies focusing on diseases with respect to Wikidata for 9 European languages (Czech, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese and Spanish) for both ontologies, plus Arabic, Chinese and Russian for the second one. We first use direct links between Wikidata and the studied ontolo…

We introduce a novel multi-source technique for incorporating source syntax into neural machine translation using linearized parses. This is achieved by employing separate encoders for the sequential and parsed versions of the same source sentence; the resulting representations are then combined using a hierarchical attention mechanism. The proposed model improves over both seq2seq and parsed baselines by over 1 BLEU on the WMT17 English-German task. Further analysis shows that our multi-source syntactic model is able to translate successfully without any parsed input, unlike standard parsed m…
This paper presents the first Swedish evaluation benchmark for textual semantic similarity. The benchmark is compiled by simply running the English STS-B dataset through the Google machine translation API. This paper discusses potential problems with using such a simple approach to compile a Swedish evaluation benchmark, including translation errors, vocabulary variation, and productive compounding. Despite some obvious problems with the resulting dataset, we use the benchmark to compare the majority of the currently existing Swedish text representations, demonstrating that native models outpe…

Image classification is an ongoing research challenge. Most of the available research focuses on image classification for the English language, however there is very little research on image classification for the Arabic language. Expanding image classification to Arabic has several applications. The present study investigated a method for generating Arabic labels for images of objects. The method used in this study involved a direct English to Arabic translation of the labels that are currently available on ImageNet, a database commonly used in image classification research. The purpose of th…
