We consider a macroscopic quantum system such as a qubit, interacting with a bath of fermions as in the Fröhlich polaron model. The interaction Hamiltonian is thus linear in the macroscopic system variable, and bilinear in the fermions. Using the recently developed extension of Feynman-Vernon theory to non-harmonic baths we evaluate quadratic and the quartic terms in the influence action. We find that for this model the quartic term vanish by symmetry arguments. Although the influence of the bath on the system is of the same form as from bosonic harmonic oscillators up to effects to sixth order in the system-bath interaction, the temperature dependence is nevertheless rather different, unless rather contrived models are considered.
The time evolution of occupation number is studied for fermionic or bosonic oscillator linearly fully coupled to several fermionic and bosonic heat baths. The influence of characteristics of thermal reservoirs of different statistics on the non-stationary population probability is analyzed at large times. Applications of the absence of equilibrium in such systems for creating a dynamic (nonstationary) memory storage are discussed.
The evolution of a quantum system towards thermal equilibrium is usually studied by approximate methods, which have their limits of validity and should be checked against analytically solvable models. In this paper, we propose an analytically solvable model to investigate the energy transfer between a bosonic bath and a fermionic chain which are nonlinearly-coupled to each other. The bosonic bath consists of an infinite collection of non-interacting bosonic modes, while the fermionic chain is represented by a chain of interacting fermions with nearest-neighbor interactions. We compare behavior…

This paper considers the extension of the non-Markovian stochastic approach for quantum open systems strongly coupled to a fermionic bath, to the models in which the system operators commute with the fermion bath. This technique can also be a useful tool for studying open quantum systems coupled to a spin-chain environment, which can be further transformed into an effective fermionic bath. We derive an exact stochastic Schrödinger equation (SSE), called fermionic quantum state diffusion (QSD) equation, from the first principle by using the fermionic coherent state representation. The reduced d…
We establish a quantum functional central limit for the dynamics of a system coupled to a Fermionic bath with a general interaction linear in the creation, annihilation and scattering of the bath reservoir. Following a quantum Markovian limit, we realize the open dynamical evolution of the system as an adapted quantum stochastic process driven by Fermionic Noise.
We obtain the analytical expression for the Kraus decomposition of the quantum map of an environment modeled by an arbitrary quadratic fermionic Hamiltonian acting on one or two qubits, and derive simple functions to check the non-positivity of the intermediate map. These functions correspond to two different sufficient criteria for non-Markovianity. In the particular case of an environment represented by the Ising Hamiltonian, we discuss the two sources of non-Markovianity in the model, one due to the finite size of the lattice, and another due to the kind of interactions.
We present a stochastic approach for the description of the quantum dynamics of open system in a fermionic environment (bath). The full quantum evolution as provided by the Schrodinger equation is reformulated exactly as a probabilistic average over the so-called dressed quantum trajectories. The latter are defined as follows. The fermionic environment can be represented as a fermi sea whose "surface" is covered by the ripples of quantum fluctuations. If we consider these fluctuations in the basis of the particle-hole coherent states, then these fluctuations produce a classical particle-hole n…
Coupling a quantum particle to a fermionic bath suppresses the particle's amplitude to tunnel, even at zero temperature. While this effect can generally be neglected for gapped baths -- a key feature for superconducting qubits -- , it is possible for the bath to be gapped near the potential minima between which the particle tunnels, but different minima to correspond to different bath topologies. This enforces the bath to undergo gap closing along the tunneling path. In this work, we investigate quantum tunneling in the presence of such a topology-changing fermionic bath. We develop a field th…
We study relaxation dynamics in a strongly-interacting two-site Fermi-Hubbard model that is induced by coupling each site to a local fermionic bath. To derive the proper form of the Lindblad operators that enter an effective description of the system-bath coupling in different temperature regimes, we employ a diagrammatic real-time technique for the time evolution of the reduced density matrix. In spite of a local coupling to the baths, the found Lindblad operators are non-local in space. We compare with the local approximation, where those non-local effects are neglected. Furthermore, we prop…
We study thermalization in a one-dimensional quantum system consisting of a noninteracting fermionic chain with each site of the chain coupled to an additional bath site. Using a density matrix renormalization group algorithm we investigate the time evolution of observables in the chain after a quantum quench. For low densities we show that the intermediate time dynamics can be quantitatively described by a system of coupled equations of motion. For higher densities our numerical results show a prethermalization for local observables at intermediate times and a full thermalization to the grand…
Quantum systems of interest are typically coupled to several quantum channels (more generally environments). In this paper, we develop an exact stochastic Schrödinger equation for an open quantum system coupled to a hybrid environment containing both bosonic and fermionic particles. Such a stochastic differential equation may be obtained directly from a microscopic model through employing a classical complex Gaussian noise and a non-commutative fermionic noise to simulate the hybrid bath. As an immediate application of our developed stochastic approach, we show that the evolution of the reduce…
We present and analyze the fermionic time evolving density matrix using orthogonal polynomials algorithm (fTEDOPA), which enables the numerically exact simulation of open quantum systems coupled to a fermionic environment. The method allows for simulating the time evolution of open quantum systems with arbitrary spectral densities at zero or finite temperatures with controllable and certified error. We demonstrate the efficacy of the method towards the simulation of quintessential fermionic open quantum systems including the resonant level model and quantum dot coupled to an impurity and towar…
We consider a model of quantum dynamical semigroup on a finite dimensional fermionic space, obtained as the continuous-time limit of a repeated interactions model between a system and several thermal baths, with a dynamic driven by quadratic Hamiltonians. We assume that there is a globally conserved observable which can be expressed as a sum of energies on the system and on each baths, and we study the energy fluxes between the baths and the system. First, we consider only the mean energy fluxes, and prove that every thermal machines on quasi-free fermions in trivial, in the sense that it is n…
Coupling to a thermal bath leads to decoherence of stored quantum information. For a system of Gaussian fermions, the fermionic analog of linear or Gaussian optics, these dynamics can be elegantly and efficiently described by evolution of the system's covariance matrix. Taking both system and bath to be Gaussian fermionic, we observe that decoherence occurs at a rate that is independent of the bath temperature. Furthermore, we also consider a weak coupling regime where the dynamics are Markovian. We present a microscopic derivation of Markovian master equations entirely in the language of cova…
In this article we derive the exact dynamics of a two qubit (spin 1/2) system interacting centrally with separate fermionic baths composed of qubits in thermal state. Further, each spin of a bath is coupled to every other spin of the same bath. The corresponding dynamical map is constructed. It is used to analyse the non-Markovian nature of the two qubit central spin dynamics. We further observe the evolution of quantum correlations like entanglement and discord under the influence of the environmental interaction. Moreover, we demonstrate the comparison between this exact two qubit dynamics a…
We study the macroscopic realism (macrorealism) through the two- and three-time Leggett-Garg inequalities (LGIs) in a two interacting qubits system. The two qubits are coupled either with two bosonic (thermal or photonic) baths or fermionic (electronic) baths. We study both how the equilibrium and nonequilibrium environments influence the LGIs. One way to characterize the nonequilibrium condition is by the temperature difference (for the bosonic bath) or the chemical potential difference (for the fermionic bath). We also study the heat or particle current and the entropy production rate genera…

We establish a theoretical method which goes beyond the weak coupling and Markovian approximations while remaining intuitive, using a quantum master equation in a larger Hilbert space. The method is applicable to all impurity Hamiltonians tunnel-coupled to one (or multiple) baths of free fermions. The accuracy of the method is in principle not limited by the system-bath coupling strength, but rather by the shape of the spectral density and it is especially suited to study situations far away from the wide-band limit. In analogy to the bosonic case, we call it the fermionic reaction coordinate …
Efficient low temperature simulations for fermionic reservoirs with the hierarchical equations of motion method: Application to the Anderson impurity model
We investigate numerically the problem of few (one, two) noninteracting spin$-1/2$ fermions in a shallow harmonic trap coupled via contact repulsive interactions to a uniform one-dimensional bath of lattice bosons, described by the Bose-Hubbard model. Through extensive density-matrix renormalization group calculations, we extract the binding energy and the effective mass of quasiparticles, including dressed impurities (polarons) and their two-body bound states (bipolarons), emerging from the effective non-local Casimir interaction between the impurities. We show that the mixture exhibits rathe…
Obtaining dynamics of an interacting quantum many-body system connected to multiple baths initially at different, finite, temperatures and chemical potentials is a challenging problem. This is due to a combination of the prevalence of strong correlations in the system, the infinite nature of the baths and the long time to reach steady state. In this work we develop a general formalism that allows access to the full non-Markovian dynamics of such open quantum many-body systems up to the non-equilibrium steady state (NESS), provided its uniqueness. Specifically, we show how finite-time evolution…
Tensor network influence functionals in the continuous-time limit: connections to quantum embedding, bath discretization, and higher-order time propagation
Employing the quadratic fermionic Hamiltonians for the collective and internal subsystems with a linear coupling, we studied the role of fermionic statistics on the dynamics of the collective motion. The transport coefficients are discussed as well as the associated fluctuation-dissipation relation. Due to different nature of the particles, the path to equilibrium is slightly affected. However, in the weak coupling regime, the time-scale for approaching equilibrium is found to be globally unchanged. The Pauli-blocking effect can modify the usual picture in open quantum system. In some limits, …
Mobile quantum impurities interacting with a fermionic bath form quasiparticles known as Fermi polarons. We demonstrate that a force applied to the bath particles can generate a drag force of similar magnitude acting on the impurities, realizing a novel, nonperturbative Coulomb drag effect. To prove this, we calculate the fully self-consistent, frequency-dependent transconductivity at zero temperature in the Baym-Kadanoff conserving approximation. We apply our theory to excitons and exciton polaritons interacting with a bath of charge carriers in a doped semiconductor embedded in a microcavity…
We consider quantum decoherence in solid-state systems by studying the transverse dynamics of a single qubit interacting with a fermionic bath and driven by external pulses. Our interest is in investigating the extent to which the lost coherence can be restored by the application of external pulses to the qubit. We show that the qubit evolution under various pulse sequences can be mapped onto Keldysh path integrals. This approach allows a simple diagrammatic treatment of different bath excitation processes contributing to qubit decoherence. We apply this theory to the evolution of the qubit co…
We show that for closed finite sized systems with an odd number of real fermionic modes, even in the presence of interactions, there are always at least two fermionic operators that commute with the Hamiltonian. There is a zero mode corresponding to the fermion parity operator, as shown by Akhmerov, as well as additional linearly independent zero modes, one of which is 1) the one that is continuously connected to the Majorana mode solution in the non-interacting limit, and 2) less prone to decoherence when the system is opened to contact with an infinite bath. We also show that in the idealized…
Recently there have been numerous proposals to create Majorana zero modes in solid state heterojunctions, superconducting wires and optical lattices. Putatively the information stored in qubits constructed from these modes is protected from various forms of decoherence. Here we show that this is not the case. We present a generic method to study the effect of external perturbations on these modes. We focus on the case where there are no interactions between different Majorana modes either directly or through intermediary fermions. To quantify the rate of loss of the information stored in the M…
We present a generic, compact formula for the current flowing in interacting and non-interacting systems which are driven out-of-equilibrium by biased reservoirs described by Lindblad jump operators. We show that, in the limit of high temperature and chemical potential, our formula is equivalent to the well-known Meir-Wingreen formula, which describes the current flowing through a system connected to fermionic baths, therefore bridging the gap between the two formalisms. Our formulation gives a systematic way to address the transport properties of correlated systems strongly driven out of equi…
Atom counting theory can be used to study the role of thermal noise in quantum phase transitions and to monitor the dynamics of a quantum system. We illustrate this for a strongly correlated fermionic system, which is equivalent to an anisotropic quantum XY chain in a transverse field, and can be realized with cold fermionic atoms in an optical lattice. We analyze the counting statistics across the phase diagram in the presence of thermal fluctuations, and during its thermalization when the system is coupled to a heat bath. At zero temperature, the quantum phase transition is reflected in the …

It is well known that a receding mirror in Minkowski spacetime can model the formation of a black hole, producing Hawking-like radiation at late times. We ask what an observer would need to do to discern whether the radiation is fermionic or bosonic. Specialising to massless fields in 1+1 dimensions, we find that an Unruh-DeWitt detector accomplishes this: the late time transition rate of a detector coupled linearly to the scalar density of a spinor field is proportional to the Helmholtz free energy density of a fermionic thermal bath, hence showing a clear sign of Fermi-Dirac statistics, with…
We consider the reduced dynamics of a small quantum system in interaction with a reservoir when the initial state is factorized. We present a rigorous derivation of a GKLS master equation in the weak-coupling limit for a generic bath, which is not assumed to have a bosonic or fermionic nature, and whose reference state is not necessarily thermal. The crucial assumption is a reservoir state endowed with a mixing property: the n-point connected correlation function of the interaction must be asymptotically bounded by the product of two-point functions (clustering property).
