Understanding the appearance of commensurate and incommensurate modulations in perovskite antiferroelectrics (AFEs) is of great importance for material design and engineering. The dielectric and elastic properties of the AFE domain boundaries are lack of investigation. In this work, a novel Landau theory is proposed to understand the transformation of AFE commensurate and incommensurate phases, by considering the coupling between the oxygen octahedral tilt mode and the polar mode. The derived relationship between the modulation periodicity and temperature is in good agreement with the experimental results. Using the phase field study, we show that the polarization is suppressed at the AFE domain boundaries, contributing to a remnant polarization and local elastic stress field in AFE incommensurate phases.
Complex polar structures of incommensurate modulations (ICMs) are revealed in chemically modified PbZrO$_3$ perovskite antiferroelectrics using advanced transmission electron microscopy techniques. The Pb-cation displacements, previously assumed to arrange in a fully-compensated antiparallel fashion, are found to be either antiparallel but with different magnitudes, or in a nearly orthogonal arrangement in adjacent stripes in the ICMs. Ab initio calculations corroborate the low-energy state of these arrangements. Our discovery corrects the atomic understanding of ICMs in PbZrO$_3$-based perovs…
Anomalous electrocaloric effect (ECE) with decreasing temperature upon application of an electric field is known to occur in antiferroelectrics (AFEs), and previous understanding refers to the field-induced canting of electric dipoles if there is no phase transitions. Here, we use a first-principle-based method to study the ECE in Nd-substituted BiFeO3 (BNFO) perovskite solid solutions, which has the Pnma-type AFE ground state. We demonstrate another scenario to achieve and explain anomalous ECE, emphasizing that explicit consideration of octahedral tiltings is indispensable for a correct unde…
Bulk chalcogenide perovskite BaZrS3 (BZS), with a direct band gap in visible region, is an important photovoltaic material, albeit with limited applicability owing to its antiferroelectric (AF) nature. Presently, ferroelectric (FE) perovskite-based photovoltaics are attracting enormous attention for environmental stability and better energy conversion efficiency through enhanced charge separation, owing to loss of center of inversion symmetry. We report on antiferroelectric-ferroelectric (AF-FE) phases of BZS thin film, grown with chemical vapor deposition (CVD), using temperature-dependent Ra…
The alkali-trihalogeno-germanates AGeX$_3$ with A a large single positive ion such as Rb, Cs, or organic radicals such as methyl ammonium (MA), and X a halogen (I, Br, Cl, F) along with the corresponding stannates (ASnX$_3$) and plumbates (APbX$_3$) exhibit a large variety of crystal structures, some of which are of the perovskite type. These materials, better known as "halide perovskites'' have recently gained worldwide attention as promising photovoltaic and more broadly opto-electronic materials. But their stability problems relative to the non-perovskite phases is a major issue. Here we sh…
Ferroic transition metal oxides, which exhibit spontaneous elastic, electrical, magnetic or toroidal order, exhibit functional properties that find use in ultrastable solid-state memories to sensors and medical imaging technologies. To realize multifunctional behavior, where one order parameter can be coupled to the conjugate field of another order parameter, however, requires a common microscopic origin for the long-range order. Here, we formulate a complete theory for a novel form of ferroelectricity, whereby a spontaneous and switchable polarization emerges from the destruction of an antife…
Antiferroelectrics have been recently sparking interest due to their potential use in energy storage and electrocaloric cooling. Their main distinctive feature is antiferroelectric switching, i.e. the possibility to induce a phase transition to a polar phase by an electric field. Here we investigate the switching behavior of the model antiferroelectric perovskite PbZrO3 using thin films processed by chemical solution deposition in different geometries and orientations. Both out-of-plane and in-plane switching configurations are investigated. The critical field is observed to be highly dependen…
Ferroelectric tungsten-based Aurivillius oxides are naturally stable superlattice structures, in which A-site deficient perovskite blocks [WnO3n+1]-2 (n = 1, 2, 3, ...) interleave with fluorite-like bismuth oxide layers [Bi2O2]+2 along the c -axis. In the n = 2 Bi2W2O9 phase, an in-plane antipolar distortion dominates but there has been controversy as to the ground state symmetry. Here we show, using a combination of first-principles density functional theory calculations and experiments, that the ground state is a non-polar phase of Pnab symmetry. We explore the energetics of metastable phase…
In this paper, we present a microscopic model for heterogeneous ferroelectric and an order parameter for relaxor phase. We write a Landau theory based on this model and its application to ferroelectric PbFe$_{1/2}$Ta$_{1/2}$O$_3$ (PFT) and antiferroelectric NaNbO$_3$:Gd. We later discuss the coupling between soft mode and domain walls, soft mode and quasi-local vibration and resulting susceptibility function.
A possibility of use of the controlled decomposition of solid solutions of oxides with perovskite structure in the state of coexisting domains of the antiferroelectric (AFE) and ferroelectric (FE) phases for manufacturing of materials with negative refractive index is demonstrated. The lead zirconate titanate based solid solutions are considered as an example of substances suitable for creation of such materials. Manufactured composites constitute a dielectric matrix with a structure of conducting interphase boundaries separating domains of the FE and AFE phases. The electric conductivity of i…
High-frequency dielectric studies of Bi_0.85Nd_0.15FeO_3 ceramics performed betweeen 100 and 900 K reveal hardening of most polar phonons on cooling below antiferroelectric phase transition, which occurs near 600 K. Moreover, a strong THz dielectric relaxation is seen in paraelectric phase. Its relaxation frequency softens on cooling towards Tc ~ 600 K, its dielectric strength simultaneously decreases and finaly the relaxation disappears from the spectra below 450 K. Both phonon and dielectric relaxation behavior is responsible for a decrease in the dielectric permittivity at the antiferroelec…
Density functional calculations are performed to investigate the experimentally-reported field-induced phase transition in thin-film ZrO2 (J. Muller et al., Nano. Lett. 12, 4318). We find a small energy difference of ~ 1 meV/f.u. between the nonpolar tetragonal and polar orthorhombic structures, characteristic of antiferroelectricity. The requisite first-order transition between the two phases, which atypically for antiferroelectrics have a group-subgroup relation, results from coupling to other zone-boundary modes, as we show with a Landau-Devonshire model. Tetragonal ZrO2 is thus established…

We report on the discovery of a lead-free morphotropic phase boundary in Sm doped BiFeO3 with a simple perovskite structure using the combinatorial thin film strategy. The boundary is a rhombohedral to pseudo-orthorhombic structural transition which exhibits a ferroelectric (FE) to antiferroelectric (AFE) transition at approximately Bi0.86Sm0.14FeO3 with dielectric constant and out-of-plane piezoelectric coefficient comparable to those of epitaxial (001) oriented Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 (PZT) thin films at the MPB. The discovered composition may be a strong candidate of a Pb-free piezoelectric replacement…

The traditional derivation of the elastic anomalies associated with ferroelectric (FE) phase transitions in the framework of the Landau theory is combined with the piezoelectric constitutive relations instead of being explicitly carried out with a definite expression of the FE part of the free energy. In this manner it is shown that the softening within the FE phase is of electrostrictive and hence piezoelectric origin. Such a piezoelectric softening may be canceled by the better known piezoelectric stiffening, when the piezoelectric charges formed during the vibration are accompanied by the d…
At variance with structural ferroic phase transitions which give rise to macroscopic tensors coupled to macroscopic fields, criteria defining antiferroelectric (AFE) phase transitions are still under discussion due to the absence of specific symmetry properties characterizing their existence. They are recognized by the proximity of a ferroelectric (FE) phase induced under applied electric field, with a double hysteresis loop relating the induced polarization to the electric field and a typical anomaly of the dielectric permittivity. Here, we show that there exist indeed symmetry criteria defin…
We investigate the electron-phonon coupling in CH3NH3PbX3 lead halide perovskites through the observation of Landau levels and high-order excitons at weak magnetic fields, where the cyclotron energy is significantly smaller than the longitudinal optical phonon energy. The reduced masses of the carriers and the exciton binding energies obtained from these data are clearly influenced by polaron formation. We analyze the field-dependent polaronic and excitonic properties, and show that they can be quantitatively reproduced by the Frohlich large polaron model.
Abstract Characterizing the crystalline disorder properties of the heterovalent ternary semiconductors continues to challenge solid-state theory. Here, a Landau theory is developed for the wurtzite-based ternary semiconductor ZnSnN2. It is shown that the symmetry properties of two nearly co-stable phases, with space groups Pmc21 and Pbn21, infer that a reconstructive phase transition is the source of crystal structure disorder via a mixture of the phases. The site exchange defect, which consists of two adjacent antisite defects, is identified as the nucleation mechanism of the transition. A La…
Recently, a layered ferroelectric CuInP2Se6 was shown to exhibit domain walls with locally enhanced piezoresponse - a striking departure from the observations of nominally zero piezoresponse in most ferroelectrics. Although it was proposed that such "bright" domain walls are phase-boundaries between ferri- and antiferroelectrically ordered regions of the materials, the physical mechanisms behind the existence and response of these boundaries remain to be understood. Here, using Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire phenomenology combined with four sub-lattices model, we describe quantitatively the bright…
The junction magnetoresistivity and domain phase transition were studied between ZnO and La0.4Gd0.1Sr0.5CoO3 thin films grown on LaAlO3 (100) substrates epitaxially by pulse laser deposit. The ferromagnetic transformation into phase-separated (two phase) state was displayed below Tc~127 and has observed that the lattice change discontinuously in the doped cobalt perovskites La0.4Gd0.1Sr0.5CoO3. The Ginzburg-Landau phase field is introduced to deduce antiferroelectric domain structure in LGSCO thin film. On the basis of the domain structures, the phase boundary of thin film is strongly dependen…
The emergent behaviors in antiferroelectric thin films due to a coupling between surface electrochemistry and intrinsic polar instabilities are explored within the framework of the modified 2-4-6 Kittel-Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (KLGD) thermodynamic approach. Using phenomenological parameters of the KLGD potential for a bulk antiferroelectric (PbZrO3) and a Stephenson-Highland (SH) approach, we study the role of surface ions with a charge density proportional to the relative partial oxygen pressure on the dipole states and their reversal mechanisms in the antiferroelectric thin films. The com…
The list of possible commensurate phases obtained from the parent tetragonal phase of Ruddlesden-Popper systems, A$_{n+1}$B$_n$C$_{3n+1}$ for general $n$ due to a single phase transition involving the reorienting of octahedra of C (oxygen) ions is reexamined using a Landau expansion. This expansion allows for the nonlinearity of the octahedral rotations and the rotation-strain coupling. It is found that most structures allowed by symmetry are inconsistent with the constraint of rigid octahedra which dictates the form of the quartic terms in the Landau free energy. For A$_2$BC$_4$ our analysis …
This work investigates the origins of cation ordering of double perovskites using first-principles theory computations combined with machine learning (ML) and causal relations. We have considered various oxidation states of A, A', B, and B' from the family of transition metal ions to construct a diverse compositional space. A conventional framework employing traditional ML classification algorithms such as Random Forest (RF) coupled with appropriate features including geometry-driven and key structural modes leads to highly accurate prediction (~98%) of A-site cation ordering. We have evaluate…
The phenomenological theory for the polar instability giving rise to a two-dimensional electron gas at perovskite interfaces is hereby extended to include the coupling to perovskite tilts. A Landau theory for homogeneous tilts is first explored, setting the scene for the further, more realistic Landau-Ginzburg theory describing varying tilt amplitudes across a thin film. The theory is also generalized to account for the response to an applied electric field normal to the interface, which allows a finer control on phase transitions. The conventionally described physics of a single metal-insulat…
Recently discovered fine structure of the morphotropic phase boundaries in highly piezoelectric mixture compounds PZT, PMN-PT, and PZN-PT demonstrates the importance of highly non-linear interactions in these systems. We show that an adequate Landau-type description of the ferroelectric phase transitions in these compounds is achieved by the use of a twelfth-order expansion of the Landau potential in terms of the phenomenological order parameter. Group-theoretical and catastrophe-theory methods are used in constructing the appropriate Landau potential. A complete phase diagram is calculated in…
We study the electrical behavior of multiferroic BiFeO$_3$ by means of first-principles calculations. We do so by constraining a specific component of the electric displacement field along a variety of structural paths, and by monitoring the evolution of the relevant physical properties of the crystal along the way. We find a complex interplay of ferroelectric, antiferroelectric and antiferrodistortive degrees of freedom that leads to an unusually rich electrical phase diagram, which strongly departs from the paradigmatic double-well model of simpler ferroelectric materials. In particular, we …
The physical nature of the ferroelectric (FE), ferrielectric (FEI) and antiferroelectric (AFE) phases, their coexistence and spatial distributions underpin the functionality of antiferrodistortive (AFD) multiferroics in the vicinity of morphotropic phase transitions. Using Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (LGD) phenomenology and a semi-microscopic four sublattice model (FSM), we explore the behavior of different AFE, FEI and FE long-range orderings and their coexistence at the morphotropic phase boundaries in FE-AFE-AFD multiferroics. These theoretical predictions are compared with the experimental …
The past several years has witnessed a surge of interest in organometallic trihalide perovskites, which are at the heart of the new generation of solid-state solar cells. Here, we calculated the static conductivity of charged domain walls in n- and p- doped organometallic uniaxial ferroelectric semiconductor perovskite CH3NH3PbI3 using the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (LGD) theory. We find that due to the charge carrier accumulation, the static conductivity may drastically increase at the domain wall by 3-4 orders of magnitude in comparison with conductivity through the bulk of the material. Als…
Realistic finite temperature simulations of matter are a formidable challenge for first principles methods. Long simulation times and large length scales are required, demanding years of compute time. Here we present an on-the-fly machine learning scheme that generates force fields automatically during molecular dynamics simulations. This opens up the required time and length scales, while retaining the distinctive chemical precision of first principles methods and minimizing the need for human intervention. The method is widely applicable to multi-element complex systems. We demonstrate its p…
Some of (1-x)NaNbO_3-(x)ABO_3 perovskite solid solutions exhibit a dramatic diffusion of the dielectric permittivity epsilon' maximum and relaxor-type behavior when the second component concentration exceeds a threshold value x_0. The concentration phase transition to the relaxor-like phase is abrupt (of the first order kind) that is seen from the step in the dependence of the epsilon'(T) maximum temperature, T_m, on x. The precursor of this transition is a giant (up to 100 K) temperature hysteresis of epsilon'(T). Some relaxor-like properties appear even at x < x_0 in the course of cooling wh…
We present a thermodynamic analysis of the recently discovered nitride ferroelectric materials using the classic Landau-Devonshire approach. The electrostrictive and dielectric stiffness coefficients of Al1-xScxN with wurtzite structure (6mm) are determined using a free energy density function assuming a hexagonal parent phase (6/mmm), with the first order phase transition based on the dielectric stiffness relationships. The results of this analysis show that the strain sensitivity of the energy barrier is one order of magnitude larger than that of the spontaneous polarization in these novel w…
Earths lower mantle extending from 670 to 2,990 km deep is predominantly composed of a perovskite-type (Mg,Fe)SiO3 phase1,2. The perovskite phase undergoes a structural phase transition to a post-perovskite phase responsible for D" layer seismic discontinuity2,3 at about 2690 km depth in the lowermost region of the lower mantle. However, structural basis of other seismic discontinuities occurring in the upper region of the lower mantle (700 km to 1,200 km deep) remains unexplained4-7, as no apparent change in the crystal symmetry of the orthorhombic perovskite phase has been reported5. We pres…
In this paper we explain how to set up what is in fact the only possible consistent construction scheme for a Landau theory of high pressure phase transitions that systematically allows to take into account elastic nonlinearities. We also show how to incorporate available information on the pressure dependence of elastic constants taken from experiment or simulation. We apply our new theory to the example of the high pressure cubic-tetragonal phase transition in Strontium Titanate, a model perovskite that has played a central role in the development of the theory of structural phase transition…
We present the first systematic {\em ab initio} study of anti-ferrodistortive (AFD) order in Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) phases of strontium titanate, Sr$_{1+n}$Ti$_n$O$_{3n+1}$, as a function of both compressive epitaxial strain and phase number $n$. We find all RP phases to exhibit AFD order under a significant range of strains, recovering the bulk AFD order as $\sim 1/n^2$. A Ginzburg-Landau Hamiltonian generalized to include inter-octahedral interactions reproduces our {\em ab initio} results well, opening a pathway to understanding other nanostructured perovskite systems.

A 20% substitution of Bi with La in the perovskite Bi1-xLaxFe0.5Sc0.5O3 system obtained under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions has been found to induce an incommensurately modulated structural phase. The room temperature X-ray and neutron powder diffraction patterns of this phase were successfully refined using the Imma(0,0,g)s00 superspace group (g=0.534(3)) with the modulation applied to Bi/La- and oxygen displacements. The modulated structure is closely related to the prototype antiferroelectric structure of PbZrO3 which can be considered as the lock-in variant of the latter wi…
We investigate the oxygen octahedral rotations that occur in two perovskites, SrTiO3 and PbTiO3, as a function of applied three-dimensional electric displacement field, allowing us to map out the phase diagram of rotations in both the paraelectric and ferroelectric regions of the polar response. First-principles calculations at fixed electric displacement field are used to extract parameters of a Landau-Devonshire model that is analyzed to identify the phase boundaries between different rotational states. The calculations reveal a rich phase diagram of rotations versus applied field in both Sr…
At room temperature, GdMnO3 is a paraelectric and paramagnetic with a distorted perovskite structure of orthorhombic symmetry (space group Pnma). On cooling, it undergoes a phase transition sequence to a magnetic incommensurate phase (k=delta a*; Tc1=42K) and a A-type antiferromagnetic phase (Tc2=27K). At low temperatures (T<12K), a magnetic field applied along the a-axis destabilizes the antiferromagnetic phase and induces a first order transition to a magnetic commensurate modulated phase (delta=1/4) that is also ferroelectric (P//c). This work analyses this field induced phase transition fr…
Landau theory and symmetry considerations lead us to propose an explanation for several seemingly paradoxical behaviors of charge ordering (CO) and spin ordering (SO) in the mixed valence compound LuFe2O4. Both SO and CO are highly frustrated. We analyze a lattice gas model of CO within mean field theory and determine the magnitude of several of the phenomenological interactions. We show that the assumption of a continuous phase transition at which CO or SO develops implies that both CO and SO are incommensurate. To explain how ferroelectric fluctuations in the charge disordered phase can be c…
Theoretical analysis based on the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (LGD) theory is used to show that the product effect of flexoelectricity and rotostriction can lead to a spontaneous polarization in the vicinity of antiphase boundaries, ferroelastic twin walls, surfaces and interfaces in the octahedrally tilted phase of otherwise non-ferroelectric perovskites such as CaTiO3, SrTiO3, and EuTiO3. As an example, we numerically demonstrate a large spontaneous polarization on the order of 1-5muC/cm2 at the SrTiO3 antidistortive phase boundaries at temperatures lower than the antiferrodistortive structur…

Many ferroelastic crystals display at sufficiently low measurement frequencies a huge elastic softening below Tc which is caused by domain wall motion. Materials range from perovskites to iron based superconductors and shape memory materials. We present a model - based on Landau-Ginzburg theory including long range elastic interaction between needle shaped ferroelastic domains - to describe the observed superelastic softening. The theory predicts that the domain wall contribution to the elastic susceptibility is different for improper and proper ferroelastic materials. A test of the theory aga…
The rotational instability of the electric polarization P during phase transformations between ferroelectric phases is of great practical interest, since it may be accompanied by extremely large values of the piezoelectric coefficient, and a divergence of the coupled shear compliance contributes to such enhancements. In the literature, this had been explicitly calculated in the framework of the Landau theory and discussed with specific numerical simulations involving tetragonal, orthorhombic and rhombohedral ferroelectric phases. When monoclinic phases are involved, such an approach is practic…
The Kugel-Khomskii (KK) Hamiltonian for the titanates describes spin and orbital superexchange interactions between $d^1$ ions in an ideal perovskite structure in which the three $t_{2g}$ orbitals are degenerate in energy and electron hopping is constrained by cubic site symmetry. In this paper we implement a variational approach to mean-field theory in which each site, $i$, has its own $n \times n$ single-site density matrix $\rhov(i)$, where $n$, the number of allowed single-particle states, is 6 (3 orbital times 2 spin states). The variational free energy from this 35 parameter density matr…
Perovskite solid solutions PbHfO3-PbSnO3 offer valuable opportunities for studying the formation mechsnisms of incommensurate phases, owing to the presence of an intermediate (between cubic and incommensurate) phase, which is stabilized in PbHfO3 upon PbSnO3 admixture. Here, x-ray diffuse scattering signal is used to quantify the evolution of susceptibilities related to different modes of distortion (ferroelectric, incommensurate, antiferrodistortive) as a function of temperature and the results are critically compared to the predictions of a minimal symmetry-based Landau-like model with two c…
The coupling between antiferrodistortion (AFD) and ferroelectric (FE) polarization, universal for all tilted perovskite multiferroics, is known to strongly correlate with domain wall functionalities in the materials. The intrinsic mechanisms of domain wall phenomena, especially AFD-FE coupling-induced phenomena at the domain walls, have continued to intrigue the scientific and technological communities because of the need to develop the future nano-scale electronic devices. Over the past years, theoretical studies often show controversial results, owing to the fact that they are neither suffic…
