A large number of new members ($\sim$150) of the Cetus Stream (CS) were identified from their clustering features in dynamical space using 6D kinematic data by combining LAMOST DR5 and Gaia DR2 surveys. They map a diffuse structure that extends over at least 100 degrees in the northern and southern Galactic hemispheres, at heliocentric distances between 20 to 50 kpc. Taking advantage of this expanded dataset, we model the stream with a suite of tailored N-body simulations. Our findings exclude the possibility that the NGC 5824 globular cluster is the core of the progenitor of the stream, as postulated by previous studies. Our best models, which successfully reproduce the features of the CS indicate that the progenitor is likely a dwarf galaxy of $\sim$ 2$\times$10$^9$M$_{\odot}$, with a diffuse disc morphology. The merger occured $\sim$ 5 Gyr ago and since then it has experienced approximately eight apo-center passages. Our results suggest that NGC 5824 was either a globular cluster situated off-centre in the dwarf progenitor or, alternatively, it was the nuclear star cluster of another dwarf galaxy that has very similar orbit as the progenitor of the CS. In both scenarios, the progenitor systems would leave streams around NGC 5824, but with distinct distance distributions. To discriminate between these scenarios, the detection and accurate distance measurements of the predicted stream around the GC are crucial, which will be possible in the upcoming LSST era. Our simulations also predict that part of the Southern Cetus stream is very likely the newly discovered Palca stream, and possibly related to another, more diffuse Southern substructure, the Eridanus-Pheonix overdensity.
We trace the Cetus Polar Stream (CPS) with blue horizontal branch (BHB) and red giant stars (RGBs) from Data Release 8 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS DR8). Using a larger dataset than was available previously, we are able to refine the measured distance and velocity to this tidal debris star stream in the south Galactic cap. Assuming the tidal debris traces the progenitor's orbit, we fit an orbit to the CPS and find that the stream is confined between ~24-36 kpc on a rather polar orbit inclined 87 degrees to the Galactic plane. The eccentricity of the orbit is 0.20, and the period ~700 …
We use a novel cluster identification tool StarGO to explore the metal poor ([Fe/H] $<$ -1.5) outer stellar halo (d $>$ 15 kpc) of the Milky Way using data from Gaia, LAMOST and SDSS. Our method is built using an unsupervised learning algorithm, a self-organizing map, which trains a 2-D neural network to learn the topological structures of a data set from an n-D input space. Using a 4-D space of angular momentum and orbital energy, we identify three distinct groups corresponding to the Sagittarius, Orphan, and Cetus Streams. For the first time we are able to discover a northern counterpart to …
We present a new fully data-driven approach to derive spectro-photometric distances based on artificial neural networks. The method was developed and tested on SEGUE data and will serve as a reference for the $Contributed$ $Data$ $Product$ SPdist of the WEAVE survey. With this method, the relative precision of the distances is of $\sim 13 \%$. The catalogue of more than 300,000 SEGUE stars for which we have derived spectro-photometric distances will soon be publicly available on the Vizier service of the Centre de Données de Strasbourg. With this 6D catalogue of stars with positions, distances…
We combine the power of two stream-searching tools, STREAMFINDER and StarGO applied to the Gaia EDR3 data, to detect stellar debris belonging to the Cetus stream system that forms a complex, nearly polar structure around the Milky Way. In this work, we find the southern extensions of the northern Cetus stream as the Palca stream and a new southern stream, which overlap on the sky but have different distances. These two stream wraps extend over more than $\sim100°$ on the sky ($-60°<δ<+40°$). The current N-body model of the system reproduces both wraps in the trailing arm. We also show that the…
The distance to the fireworks galaxy NGC 6946 is highly uncertain. Recent distance estimates using the tip of the red giant branch of 7.7 to 7.8 Mpc are larger than the distance commonly assumed for studying supernovae in this galaxy of 5.9 Mpc. Here we use the high supernova rate of the galaxy to derive the star-formation rate and predict the galaxy's FUV flux. We also account for dust extinction by different methods to derive a distance of 7.9+/-4.0 Mpc for NGC 6946. We then use the new distance to re-evaluate the understanding of the supernova progenitors 2002hh, 2004et, 2017eaw, the possib…
Massive early-type galaxies are believed to be the end result of an extended mass accretion history. The stars formed in situ very early on in the initial phase of the assembly might have originated from an extremely intense star formation burst, and may still be found within the cores of such galaxies today. We investigate the presence of a surviving high-$z$ compact progenitor component in the brightest galaxy of the Hydra I cluster, NGC 3311, by mapping its 2D kinematics and stellar population out to 2 effective radii, combining MUSE observations, extended EMILES models, and a newly develop…
We address the nature and origin of Super Star Clusters (SSCs) discovered by Holtzman et al. (1992) within a radius of $\sim$$5\,\rm kpc$ from the center of NGC 1275, the giant elliptical galaxy at the center of the Perseus Cluster. We show that, in contrast with the much more numerous population of SSCs subsequently discovered up to $\sim$$30\,\rm kpc$ from the center of this galaxy, the central SSC population have maximal masses an order of magnitude higher and a mass function with a shallower power-law slope. Furthermore, whereas the outer SSC population have ages spanning a few $\rm Myr$ t…

(abridged) We present a dynamical analysis of the extended stellar stream encircling NGC 1097. Within a statistical framework, we model its surface brightness using mock streams as in Amorisco (2015) and deep imaging data from the CHART32 telescope (Stellar Tidal Stream Survey). We reconstruct the post-infall evolution of the progenitor, which has experienced 3 pericentric passages and lost more than 2 orders of magnitude in mass. At infall, $5.4\pm0.6$ Gyr ago, the progenitor was a disky dwarf with mass of $\log_{10}[m(<3.4\pm1 {\rm kpc})/ M_\odot]=10.35\pm0.25$. We illustrate how the 90$^\ci…
The tidal tails of globular clusters have been shown to be sensitive to the external tidal field. We investigate how Galactic globular clusters with observed tails are affected by satellite dwarf galaxies by simulating tails in galaxy models with and without dwarf galaxies. The simulations indicate that tidal tails can be subdivided into into three categories based on how they are affected by dwarf galaxies: 1) dwarf galaxies perturb the progenitor cluster's orbit (NGC 4590, Pal 1, Pal 5), 2) dwarf galaxies perturb the progenitor cluster's orbit and individual tail stars (NGC 362, NGC 1851, NG…

We present our findings based on pre- and post-explosion data of the type II-Plateau SN 2018aoq that exploded in NGC 4151. As distance estimates to NGC 4151 vary by an order of magnitude, we utilised the well-known correlation between ejecta velocity and plateau brightness, i.e. the standard candle method, to obtain a distance of 18.2$\pm$1.2 Mpc, which is in very good agreement with measurements based on geometric methods. The above distance implies a mid-plateau absolute magnitude of $M_{V}^{50}=-15.76\pm$0.14 suggesting that it is of intermediate brightness when compared to IIP SNe such as …
The main progenitor candidate of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) is white dwarfs in binary systems where the companion star is another white dwarf (double degenerate system) or a less evolved non-degenerate star with R* >~ 0.1 Rsun (single degenerate system), but no direct observational evidence exists that tells which progenitor system is more common. Recent studies suggest that the light curve of a supernova shortly after its explosion can be used to set a limit on the progenitor size, R*. Here, we report a high cadence monitoring observation of SN 2015F, a normal SN Ia, in the galaxy NGC 2442 s…
We have observed a sample of 10 white dwarf candidates in the rich open cluster NGC 2323 (M50) with the Keck Low-Resolution Imaging Spectrometer. The spectroscopy shows eight to be DA white dwarfs, with six of these having high S/N appropriate for our analysis. Two of these white dwarfs are consistent with singly evolved cluster membership, and both are high mass $\sim$1.07 M$_\odot$, and give equivalent progenitor masses of 4.69 M$_\odot$. To supplement these new high-mass white dwarfs and analyze the initial-final mass relation (IFMR), we have also looked at 30 white dwarfs from publicly ava…
Introducing the Condor Array Telescope. II. Deep imaging observations of the edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 5907 and the NGC 5866 Group: yet another view of the iconic stellar stream
We analyze the chemical composition of the planetary nebula (PN) NGC 5315, through high-resolution (R = 40000) optical spectroscopy with UVES at the Very Large Telescope, and medium-resolution (R = 4800) near-infrared spectroscopy with FIRE at Magellan Baade Telescope, covering a wide spectral range from 0.31 to 2.50 micron. The main aim of this work is to investigate neutron (n)-capture element abundances to study the operation of the slow n-capture ("s-process") in the AGB progenitor of NGC 5315. We detect more than 700 emission lines, including ions of the n-capture elements Se, Kr, Xe, and…
Even after decades of research, the origin of multiple stellar populations in globular clusters remains enigmatic. The question as to whether the galaxy environment plays a role in their formation remains unanswered. To that extent, we analysed two classical (> 10 Gyr old) Large Magellanic Cloud globular clusters namely, NGC 1786 and NGC 1898, using imaging data from Hubble Space Telescope to compare and contrast them with ancient Galactic globular clusters to assess systematic differences that might exist between their abundance variations. We calculated their Red Giant Branch width, subtract…
We present an analysis of the host-galaxy environment of Swope Supernova Survey 2017a (SSS17a), the discovery of an electromagnetic counterpart to a gravitational wave source, GW170817. SSS17a occurred 1.9 kpc (in projection; 10.2") from the nucleus of NGC 4993, an S0 galaxy at a distance of 40 Mpc. We present a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) pre-trigger image of NGC 4993, Magellan optical spectroscopy of the nucleus of NGC 4993 and the location of SSS17a, and broad-band UV through IR photometry of NGC 4993. The spectrum and broad-band spectral-energy distribution indicate that NGC 4993 has a st…
_NGC 4589, a bright E2 merger-remnant galaxy, hosts the peculiar fast and faint calcium-rich Type Ib supernova (SN) SN 2005cz. The progenitor of Ca-rich SNe Ib has been controversial: it could be a) a young massive star with 6-12 M$\odot$ in a binary system, or b) an old low-mass star in a binary system that was kicked out from the galaxy center. Moreover, previous distance estimates for this galaxy have shown a large spread, ranging from 20 Mpc to 60 Mpc. Thus, using archival $Hubble$ $Space$ $Telescope$/ACS $F435W$, $F555W$, and $F814W$ images, we search for star clusters in NGC 4589 in orde…
We address the nature and origin of a spiral disk at the center of NGC 1275, the giant elliptical galaxy at the center of the Perseus cluster, that spans a radius of $\sim$$5\,\rm kpc$. By comparing stellar absorption lines measured in long-slit optical spectra with synthetic spectra for single stellar populations, we find that fitting of these lines requires two stellar populations: (i) a very young population that peaks in radial velocity at $\pm 250 {\rm \, km \, s^{-1}}$ of the systemic velocity within a radius of $\sim$$720\,\rm pc$ of the nucleus, a $1\,σ$ velocity dispersion significant…
Using photometry from Data Release 10 of the northern footprint of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we detect two new stellar streams with lengths of between $25\arcdeg$ and $50\arcdeg$. The streams, which we designate Hermus and Hyllus, are at distances of between 15 and 23 kpc from the Sun and pass primarily through Hercules and Corona Borealis. Stars in the streams appear to be metal poor, with [Fe/H] $\sim -2.3$, though we cannot rule out metallicities as high as [Fe/H] = -1.2. While Hermus passes within $1\arcdeg$ (in projection) of the globular cluster NGC 6229, a roughly one magnitude diff…
Given its velocity dispersion, the early-type galaxy NGC 1600 has an unusually massive ($M_\bullet = 1.7 \times 10^{10} M_\odot$) central supermassive black hole (SMBH), surrounded by a large core ($r_\mathrm{b} = 0.7$ kpc) with a tangentially biased stellar distribution. We present high-resolution equal-mass merger simulations including SMBHs to study the formation of such systems. The structural parameters of the progenitor ellipticals were chosen to produce merger remnants resembling NGC 1600. We test initial stellar density slopes of $ρ\propto r^{-1}$ and $ρ\propto r^{-3/2}$ and vary the i…
We present maps of the stellar streams detected in the Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) and Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) catalogs using the STREAMFINDER algorithm. We also report the spectroscopic follow-up of the brighter DR2 stream members obtained with the high-resolution CFHT/ESPaDOnS and VLT/UVES spectrographs as well as with the medium-resolution NTT/EFOSC2 spectrograph. Two new stellar streams that do not have a clear progenitor are detected in DR2 (named Hrid and Gunnthra), and seven are detected in EDR3 (named Gaia-6 to Gaia-12). Several candidate streams are also identified. The software als…
Core-collapse supernovae (SNe) are the inevitable fate of most massive stars. Since most stars form in groups, SN progenitors can be constrained with information of their environments. It remains challenging to accurately analyse the various components in the environment and to correctly identify their relationships with the SN progenitors. Using a combined dataset of VLT/MUSE spatially-resolved integral-field-unit (IFU) spectroscopy and HST/ACS+WFC3 high-spatial resolution imaging, we present a detailed investigation of the environment of the Type II-P SN 2004dg and Type IIb SN 2012P. The two…
A significant fraction of baryons in galaxies are in the form of diffuse gas of the circumgalactic medium (CGM). One critical component of the multi-phases of CGM, the so-called "coronal" warm-hot phase gas ($\rm 10^{5}-10^{6}$ K) traced by O VI 1031.93, 1037.62 Å resonance lines, has rarely been detected in emission from galaxy halos other than Milky Way. Here we report four additional detections of O VI emission gas in the halos of nearby edge-on galaxies, NGC 4631 and NGC 891, using archival Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer data and an updated data pipeline. We find the most intense O…
NGC 6397 is one of the most interesting, well observed and theoretically studied globular clusters. The existing wealth of observations allows us to study the reliability of the theoretical white dwarf cooling sequences of low metallicity progenitors,to determine its age and the percentage of unresolved binaries, and to assess other important characteristics of the cluster, like the slope of the initial mass function, or the fraction of white dwarfs with hydrogen deficient atmospheres. We present a population synthesis study of the white dwarf population of NGC 6397. In particular, we study th…
NGC 2359 is an HII region located in the outer Galaxy that contains the isolated Wolf-Rayet (WR) star HD 56925. We present millimeter/submillimeter observations of $^{12}$CO($J$ = 1-0, 3-2) line emission toward the entire nebula. We identified that there are three molecular clouds at VLSR $\sim$37, $\sim$54, and $\sim$67 km s$^{-1}$, and three HI clouds: two of them are at VLSR $\sim$54 km s$^{-1}$ and the other is at $\sim$63 km s$^{-1}$. These clouds except for the CO cloud at 67 km s$^{-1}$ are limb-brightened in the radio continuum, suggesting part of each cloud has been ionized. We newly …
We present DECam imaging for the peculiar Galactic globular clusters NGC1851, NGC1904 (M79), NGC2298 and NGC2808. Our deep photometry reveals that all the clusters have an important contribution of stars beyond their King tidal radii and present tails with different morphologies. We have also explored the surroundings of the clusters where the presence of the Canis Major overdensity and/or the low Galactic latitude Monoceros ring at d~8kpc is evident. A second stellar system is found at d~17kpc and spans at least 18deg x 15deg in the sky. As one of the possible scenarios to explain that featur…
A significant fraction of the most massive stars move through space with a high velocity. One of the possible physical explanations is that a supernova in a compact binary system results in a high recoil velocity of the system. If the system remains bound, it can be subsequently observed as a spectroscopic binary (SB1), a high-mass X-ray binary, a compact binary, and finally a gravitational-wave event. If such a system is traced back to its parent cluster, binary evolution models can be tested in great detail. The Gaia proper motions and parallaxes are used to demonstrate that the high-mass X-…
The mass loss rates of red supergiants (RSGs) govern their evolution towards supernova and dictate the appearance of the resulting explosion. To study how mass-loss rates change with evolution we measure the mass-loss rates (\mdot) and extinctions of 19 red supergiants in the young massive cluster NGC2100 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. By targeting stars in a coeval cluster we can study the mass-loss rate evolution whilst keeping the variables of mass and metallicity fixed. Mass-loss rates were determined by fitting DUSTY models to mid-IR photometry from WISE and Spitzer/IRAC. We find that the…
We present the first far-UV (FUV) imaging results of the intermediate-age Galactic open cluster NGC 2818 that has a Planetary nebula (PN) within the field using images taken from the Ultra-violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) aboard AstroSat. We identify cluster members by combining UVIT-detected sources with Gaia EDR3 data. We detect four bright and hot blue straggler stars (BSSs) and two yellow straggler stars (YSSs) based on their location in the optical and FUV-optical color-magnitude diagrams. Based on the parameters estimated using Spectral Energy Distribution (SED), we infer that BSSs are ei…
It is well known that massive O-stars are frequently (if not always) found in binary or higher-order multiple systems, but this fact has been less robustly investigated for the lower mass range of the massive stars, represented by the B-type stars. Obtaining the binary fraction and orbital parameter distributions of B-type stars is crucial to understand the impact of multiplicity on the archetypal progenitor of core-collapse supernovae as well as to properly investigate formation channels for gravitational wave progenitors. This work aims to characterise the multiplicity of the B-star populati…
Using the high-resolution observations obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope, we analyzed the blue straggler stars (BSSs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud cluster NGC 2213. We found that the radial distribution of BSSs is consistent with that of the normal giant stars in NGC 2213, showing no evidence of mass segregation. However, an analytic calculation carried out for these BSSs shows that they are already dynamically old, because the estimated half-mass relaxation time for these BSSs is significantly shorter than the isochronal age of the cluster. We also performed direct N-body simulations fo…
We present kinematic data for 211 bright planetary nebulae in eleven Local Group galaxies: M31 (137 PNe), M32 (13), M33 (33), Fornax (1), Sagittarius (3), NGC 147 (2), NGC 185 (5), NGC 205 (9), NGC 6822 (5), Leo A (1), and Sextans A (1). The data were acquired at the Observatorio Astronómico Nacional in the Sierra de San Pedro Mártir using the 2.1m telescope and the Manchester Echelle Spectrometer in the light of [\ion{O}{3}]$λ$5007 at a resolution of 11 km/s. A few objects were observed in H$α$. The internal kinematics of bright planetary nebulae do not depend strongly upon the metallicity or…
NGC 6791 is a well-studied, metal-rich open cluster that is so close to us that can be imaged down to luminosities fainter than that of the termination of its white dwarf cooling sequence, thus allowing for an in-depth study of its white dwarf population. We use a Monte Carlo simulator that employs up-to-date evolutionary cooling sequences for white dwarfs with hydrogen-rich and hydrogen-deficient atmospheres, with carbon-oxygen and helium cores. The cooling sequences for carbon-oxygen cores account for the delays introduced by both Ne^22 sedimentation in the liquid phase and by carbon-oxygen …
Investigating the Observational Progenitor Mass Gap in the White Dwarf Initial-Final Mass Relation. I. Cluster Census and Characterization of the First White Dwarfs in the Gap
University of British Columbia(不列颠哥伦比亚大学);University of Warwick(华威大学)
In the hierarchical formation scenario in which the outer halo of the Milky Way is the result of the continuous accretion of low-mass galaxies, a fraction of the Galactic globular cluster system might have originated in and been accreted with already extinct dwarf galaxies. In this context, we expect that the remnants of these progenitor galaxies might be still populating the surroundings of those accreted globulars. In this work, we present wide-field photometry of a sample of 23 globular clusters in the Galactocentric distance range 10 < Rg < 40kpc, which we use to search for remnants of the…
We propose that the observed stellar halo around the globular cluster (GC) NGC 1851 is evidence for its formation in the central region of its defunct host dwarf galaxy. We numerically investigate the long-term dynamical evolution of a nucleated dwarf galaxy embedded in a massive dark matter halo under the strong tidal field of the Galaxy. The dwarf galaxy is assumed to have a stellar nucleus (or a nuclear star cluster) that could be the progenitor for NGC 1851. We find that although the dark matter halo and the stellar envelope of the host dwarf of NGC 1851 can be almost completely stripped d…
Chemical tagging is a powerful tool to reveal the origin of stars and globular clusters (GCs), especially when dynamics alone cannot provide robust answers. So far, mostly $α$- and neutron capture elements have been used to distinguish stars born in the Milky Way (MW) from those born in external environments such as that of dwarf galaxies. Here, instead, we use iron-peak elements abundances to investigate the origin of a sample of metal-rich globular clusters. By homogeneously analyzing high-resolution UVES spectra of giant stars belonging to four metal-rich GCs (namely NGC 5927, NGC 6388, NGC…
We have done a spectroscopical analysis of the type I planetary nebula (PN) NGC 5315, through high-resolution (R$\sim$40000) optical spectroscopy with UVES at the 8.2m Very Large Telescope, and medium-resolution (R$\sim$4800) near-IR spectroscopy with FIRE at the 6.5m Magellan Baade telescope, covering a wide spectral range from 0.31 $μ$m to 2.50 $μ$m. The main aim of this work is to investigate the slow neutron(n)-capture process (the s-process) in the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) star progenitor of a type I PNe. We detected and identified about 700 features, including lines from the n-captu…
Merging has been proposed to explain multiple populations in globular clusters (GCs) where there is a spread in iron abundance (hereafter, iron-complex GCs). By means of N-body simulations, we investigate if merging is consistent with the observations of sub-populations and rotation in iron-complex GCs. The key parameters are the initial mass and density ratios of the progenitors. When densities are similar, the more massive progenitor dominates the central part of the merger remnant and the less massive progenitor forms an extended rotating population. The low-mass progenitor can become the m…
