In a non-minimal Higgs framework, we present a novel mechanism in which the CP violating dark particles only interact with the SM through the gauge bosons, primarily the $Z$ boson. Such $Z$-portal dark CP violation is realised in the regions of the parameter space where Higgs-mediated (co)annihilation processes are sub-dominant and have negligible contributions to the DM relic density. We show that such $Z$-portal CP violating DM can still thermalise and satisfy all experimental and observational bounds and discuss implications of such phenomena for electroweak baryogenesis.
We entertain a new paradigm according to which the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry is generated as a large-scale quantum fluctuation over the baryon-symmetric state that occurred during the cosmic inflation.
The asymmetry between matter and antimatter is key to the existence and nature of our Universe. A measure of the matter - antimatter asymmetry of the Universe is provided by the present value of the universal ratio of baryons (baryons minus antibaryons) to photons (or the ratio of baryons to entropy). The baryon asymmetry parameter is an important physical and cosmological parameter. But how fine tuned is it? A "natural" value for this parameter is zero, corresponding to equal amounts of matter and antimatter. Another, also possibly natural, choice for this dimensionless parameter would be of …
We review observational evidence for a matter-antimatter asymmetry in the early universe, which leads to the remnant matter density we observe today. We also discuss observational bounds on the presence of antimatter in the present day universe, including the possibility of a large lepton asymmetry in the cosmic neutrino background. We briefly review the theoretical framework within which baryogenesis, the dynamical generation of a matter-antimatter asymmetry, can occur. As an example, we discuss a testable minimal model that simultaneously explains the baryon asymmetry of the universe, neutri…
An overview is given of theoretical attempts to explain the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe, emphasizing particularly leptogenesis and the Affleck-Dine mechanism.
I investigate the possibility to define the sign of the leptonic asymmetry by the low energy parameters. It is shown that in the context of the minimal renormalizable SO(10) model the sign of the matter-antimatter asymmetry can be defined by the leptonic mixing and masses in the case of Type II see-saw.
Models of baryogenesis which may lead to astronomically significant amount of antimatter in the universe are reviewed. Observational features are briefly discussed.
Interactions of heavy Majorana neutrinos in the thermal phase of the early universe may be the origin of the cosmological matter-antimatter asymmetry. Successful baryogenesis, independent of initial conditions, is possible for neutrino masses in the range $10^{-3} {eV} \leq m_i \lesssim 0.1$ eV. Remarkably, this mass window is consistent with the evidence for neutrino masses from oscillations.
We propose a unified scenario to generate the masses of Dirac neutrinos and cold dark matter at the TeV scale, understand the origin of dark energy and explain the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe. This model can lead to significant impact on the Higgs searches at LHC.
The paper suggests a left-right mirror symmetric model with the global $U(1)_{B-L}\otimes U(1)_{D}$ symmetries. The model can simultaneously accommodate the standard model, neutrino physics, matter-antimatter asymmetry and cold dark matter. The model naturally and elegantly accounts for the origin of the tiny neutrino mass, matter-antimatter asymmetry and cold dark matter. In particular, it predicts a number of interesting results, e.g. a right-handed neutrino asymmetry and a dark Goldstone boson. It is also feasible and promising to test the model in future experiments.
We propose a method by which one could use modified antimatter gravity experiments in order to perform a high-precision test of antimatter charge neutrality. The proposal is based on the application of a strong, external, vertically oriented electric field during an antimatter free-fall gravity experiment in the gravitational field of the Earth. The proposed experimental setup has the potential to drastically improve the limits on the charge-asymmetry parameter ${\overline ε}_q$ of antimatter. On the theoretical side, we analyze possibilities to describe a putative charge-asymmetry of matter a…
The apparent dominance of matter over antimatter in our universe is an obvious and puzzling fact which cannot be adequately explained in present physical frameworks that assume matter-antimatter symmetry at the big bang. However, our present knowledge of starting conditions and of known sources of CP violation are both insufficient to explain the observed asymmetry. Therefore ongoing research on matter-antimatter differences is strongly motivated as well as attempts to identify viable new mechanisms that could create the present asymmetry. Here we concentrate on possible precision experiments …
We review the experimental evidence for a net baryon density in cosmology, and the theoretical mechanism for producing it, called leptogenesis, which relies on the creation of a lepton asymmetry at an intermediate step. The naturality of this mechanism and its possible relations with neutrino oscillations are outlined.
I suggest a practical particle model as an extension to the standard model. The model has a TeV scale $U(1)_{B-L}$ symmetry and it contains the fourth generation fermions with the TeV scale masses, in which including a cold dark matter neutrino. The model can completely account for the fermion flavor puzzles, the cold dark matter, and the matter-antimatter asymmetry through the leptogenesis. In particular, it is quite feasible and promising to test the model in future experiments.
The discovery of neutrino oscillations provides a solid evidence for nonzero neutrino masses and leptonic mixing. The fact that neutrino masses are so tiny constitutes a puzzling problem in particle physics. From the theoretical viewpoint, the smallness of neutrino masses can be elegantly explained through the seesaw mechanism. Another challenging issue for particle physics and cosmology is the explanation of the matter-antimatter asymmetry observed in Nature. Among the viable mechanisms, leptogenesis is a simple and well-motivated framework. In this talk we briefly review these aspects, makin…
A CPT violating decoherence scenario can easily account for all the experimental evidence in the neutrino sector including LSND. In this work it is argued that this framework can also accommodate the Dark Energy content of the Universe, as well as the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry.
I will give here an overview of the present observational and theoretical situation regarding the question of the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe and the related question of the existence of antimatter on a cosmological scale. I will also give a simple discussion of the role of CP violation in this subject.
The matter antimatter asymmetry in the Universe is one of the outstanding problems in physics.and cosmology. CP violation (CPV) is a necessary condition for generating such asymmetry but the amount predicted in the Standard Model (SM) from quark oscillations is too small by several orders of magnitude. The dynamical time operator derived together with Dirac's Hamiltonian from the Dirac canonical quantization of special relativity is shown to exhibit a CPV inversely dependent on mass. Applying to all fermions, it follows that extended Standard Models (ESM) with massive neutrinos contains a much…
I suggest an effective model between the GUT and the electroweak scale. It only introduces the two symmetries of $U(1)_{B-L}$ and $U(1)_{D}$ besides the SM groups. The two symmetries are individually broken at the reheating temperature of the universe of $10^{12}$ GeV and the scale of $3\sim 4$ TeV. The model can simultaneously accommodate the tiny neutrino masses, the matter-antimatter asymmetry and the cold dark matter (CDM). In particular, the model gives some interesting results and predictions, for instance, the neutrinos are Dirac nature and their masses are related to the $U(1)_{D}$ bre…
We explore the possibility of baryogenesis without departure from thermal equilibrium. A possible scenario is found, though it contains strong constraints on the size of the $CPT$ violation ($CPTV$) effects and on the role of the $B$ (baryon number) nonconserving interactions which are needed for it.
Although the origin of matter-antimatter asymmetry remains unknown, continuing advances in theory and improved experimental limits have ruled out some scenarios for baryogenesis, for example the sphaleron baryogenesis at the electroweak phase transition in the standard model. At the same time, the success of cosmological inflation and the prospects for discovering supersymmetry at the LHC have put some other models in sharper focus. We review the current state of our understanding of baryogenesis with the emphasis on those scenarios that we consider most plausible.
We investigate non-inertial effects on $CP$-violating processes using a model, based on the framework of quantum field theory in curved spacetimes, devised to account for the decay of accelerated particles. We show that the $CP$ violation parameter for the decay of accelerated kaons into two pions decreases very slightly as very high accelerations are achieved, implying decreased asymmetry between matter and antimatter in this regime. We discuss the relationship between these results and cosmological processes surrounding matter-antimatter asymmetry and argue that, due to the connection betwee…
We propose a new mechanism for generating matter-antimatter asymmetry via the interference of tree-level diagrams only, where the imaginary part of the Breit-Wigner propagator for an unstable mediator plays a crucial role. We first derive a general result that a nonzero $CP$-asymmetry can be generated via at least two sets of interfering tree-level diagrams involving either $2\rightarrow2$ or $1\rightarrow n$ (with $n\geq3$) processes. We illustrate this point in a simple TeV-scale extension of the Standard Model with an inert Higgs doublet and right-handed neutrinos, along with an electroweak…
We show that Loop Quantum Gravity provides new mechanisms through which observed matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe can naturally arise at temperatures less than GUT scale. This is enabled through the introduction of a new length scale ${\cal L}$, much greater than Planck length ($l_P$), to obtain semi-classical weave states in the theory. This scale which depends on the momentum of the particle modifies the dispersion relation for different helicities of fermions and leads to lepton asymmetry.
The recent measurement of the Higgs boson mass implies a relatively slow rise of the Standard Model Higgs potential at large scales, and a possible second minimum at even larger scales. Consequently, the Higgs field may develop a large vacuum expectation value during inflation. The relaxation of the Higgs field from its large postinflationary value to the minimum of the effective potential represents an important stage in the evolution of the universe. During this epoch, the time-dependent Higgs condensate can create an effective chemical potential for the lepton number, leading to a generatio…

In this work, we propose an economical model to address some open cosmological problems such as the absence of the initial cosmological singularity, an early acceleration of the Universe and the generation of matter-antimatter asymmetry. The model is based on a scenario in which the early Universe consists of a non-linear electrodynamics fields. It is found that the non-linear electrodynamics model has an equation of state $p=\frac{1}{3} ρ- \frac{4}{3} βρ^{1+α}$ which shows that the Universe undergoes an early epoch acceleration to a radiation era given by $p =\frac{1}{3} ρ$. We show that the …
The cosmological baryon asymmetry can be explained as remnant of heavy Majorana neutrino decays in the early universe. We study this mechanism for two models of neutrino masses with a large ν_μ-ν_τmixing angle which are based on the symmetries SU(5) x U(1)_F and SU(3)_c x SU(3)_L x SU(3)_R x U(1)_F, respectively. In both cases B-L is broken at the unification scale Λ_{GUT}. The models make different predictions for the baryogenesis temperature and the gravitino abundance.
The dynamics at the end of inflation can generate an asymmetry between particles and anti-particles of the inflaton field. This asymmetry can be transferred to baryons via decays, generating a baryon asymmetry in our Universe. We explore this idea in detail for a complex inflaton governed by an observationally consistent -"flatter than quadratic"- potential with a weakly broken global U(1) symmetry. We find that most of the inflaton asymmetry is locked in non-topological soliton like configurations (oscillons) produced copiously at the end of inflation. These solitons eventually decay into bar…
The matter-antimatter asymmetry is one of the greatest challenges in the modern physics. The universe including this paper and even the reader him(her)self seems to be built up of ordinary matter only. Theoretically, the well-known Sakharov's conditions remain the solid framework explaining the circumstances that matter became dominant against the antimatter while the universe cools down and/or expands. On the other hand, the standard model for elementary particles apparently prevents at least two conditions out of them. In this work, we introduce a systematic study of the antiparticle-to-part…
The possibility is raised that the observed cosmological matter-antimatter asymmetry may reside in asymmetric space-time fluctuations and their interplay with the Stckelberg-Feynman interpretation of antimatter. The presented thesis also suggests that the effect of space-time fluctuations is to diminish the fine structure constant in the past. Recent studies of the QSO absorption lines provide a 4.1 standard deviation support for this prediction. Our considerations suggest that in the presence of space-time fluctuations, the principle of local gauge invariance, and the related notion of parall…
Motivated by the AMS project, we assume that after the Big Bang or inflation epoch, antimatter was repelled onto one brane which is separated from our brane where all the observational matter resides. It is suggested that CP may be spontaneously broken, the two branes would correspond to ground states for matter and antimatter respectively. Generally a complex scalar field which is responsible for the spontaneous CP violation, exists in the space between the branes and causes a repulsive force against the gravitation. A possible potential barrier prevents the mater(antimatter) particles to ent…
In this paper, we study the contribution of the chiral vortical effect, in addition to that of the chiral magnetic effect, to the evolution of the hypermagnetic field and the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the symmetric phase of the early Universe in the temperature range 100GeV < T < 10TeV. We choose a fully helical Chern-Simons wave configuration for the velocity and the hypermagnetic vector potential fields. The latter makes the plasma force-free in the absence of viscosity. We show that the most pronounced effect of the chiral vorticity is the production and initial growth of the hypermagn…
We study the generation of the matter-antimatter asymmetry during bosonic preheating, focusing on the sources of the asymmetry. If the asymmetry appears in the multiplication factor of the resonant particle production, the matter-antimatter ratio will grow during preheating. On the other hand, if the asymmetry does not grow during preheating, one has to find out another reason. We consider several scenarios for the asymmetric preheating to distinguish the sources of the asymmetry. We also discuss a new baryogenesis scenario, in which the asymmetry is generated without introducing neither loop …
Current astronomical observations are successfully explained by the present cosmological paradigm based on the concordance model ($Λ_0$CDM + Inflation). However, such a scenario is composed of a heterogeneous mix of ingredients for describing the different stages of cosmological evolution. Particularly, it does not give an unified explanation connecting the early and late time accelerating inflationary regimes which are separated by many aeons. Other challenges to the concordance model include: a singularity at early times or the emergence of the Universe from the quantum gravity regime, the "…
The generation of a matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe may be induced by the propagation of fermions in non-trivial, spherically asymmetric (and hence Lorentz violating) gravitational backgrounds. Such backgrounds may characterise the epoch of the early universe. The key point in these models is that the background induces different dispersion relations, hence populations, between fermions and antifermions, and thus CPT Violation (CPTV) appears in thermal equilibrium. Species populations may freeze out leading to leptogenesis and baryogenesis. We consider here a string-inspired scenar…
We study the implications of thermal leptogenesis for neutrino parameters. Assuming that decays of N_1, the lightest of the heavy Majorana neutrinos, initiate baryogenesis, we show that the final baryon asymmetry is determined by only four parameters: the CP asymmetry epsilon_1, the heavy neutrino mass M_1, the effective light neutrino mass \tilde{m}_1, and the quadratic mean \bar{m} of the light neutrino masses. Imposing the CMB measurement of the baryon asymmetry as constraint on the neutrino parameters, we show, in a model independent way, that quasi-degenerate neutrinos are incompatible wi…
The simplest possibility to explain the baryon asymmetry of the Universe is to assume that radiation is created asymmetrically between baryons and anti-baryons after the inflation. We propose a new mechanism of this kind where CP-violating flavor oscillations of left-handed leptons in the reheating era distribute the lepton asymmetries partially into the right-handed neutrinos while net asymmetry is not created. The asymmetry stored in the right-handed neutrinos is later washed out by the lepton number violating decays, and it ends up with the net lepton asymmetry in the Standard Model particl…
The spin-charge-family theory, which is a kind of the Kaluza-Klein theories but with fermions carrying two kinds of spins (no charges), offers the explanation for all the assumptions of the standard model, with the origin of families, the higgs and the Yukawa couplings included. It offers the explanation also for other phenomena, like the origin of the dark matter and of the matter/antimatter asymmetry in the universe. It predicts the existence of the fourth family to the observed three, as well as several scalar fields with the weak and the hyper charge of the standard model higgs ($\pm \frac…

Using a more accurate effective Hamiltonian governing the time evolution in the particle-antiparticle subspace of states than the one obtained within the Lee-Oehme--Yang approach we show that in the case of particles created at the initial instant t = 0 only the masses of a stable particle and its antiparticle are the same at all t > 0 in a CPT invariant system, whereas the masses of an unstable particle and its antiparticle are equal only at t = 0 and then during their time evolution they become slightly different for times t >> 0 if CP symmetry is violated but CPT symmetry holds. This proper…
Matter -antimatter asymmetry, expected to be very large in the Universe, is rediscussed considering effects which might not have been considered enterely before and which can also be relevant for (high energy densities) relativistic heavy ions collisions. Effects from the phase diagram of strong interactions are raised for that.
In four-space-time dimensional string/brane theory, obtained either through compactification of the extra spatial dimensions, or by appropriate restriction to brane worlds with three large spatial dimensions, the rich physics potential associated with the presence of non-trivial Kalb-Ramond (KR) axion-like fields has not been fully exploited so far. In this talk, I discuss a scenario whereby such fields produce spontaneous Lorentz- and CPT-violating cosmological backgrounds over which strings propagate, which in the early Universe can lead to Baryogenesis through Leptogenesis in models with he…
We study the evolution of the matter-antimatter asymmetry (η), the vorticity, and the hypermagnetic field in the symmetric phase of the early Universe, and in the temperature range 100 GeV < T < 10 TeV. We assume a configuration for the hypermagnetic field which includes both helical and non-helical (Bz) components. Consequently, the hypermagnetic field and the fluid vorticity can directly affect each other, the manifestations of which we explore in three scenarios. In the first scenario, we show that in the presence of a small vorticity and a large ηeR, helicity can be generated and amplified…
This contribution is an attempt to try to understand the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe within the {\it spin-charge-family-theory} if assuming that transitions in non equilibrium processes among instanton vacua and complex phases in mixing matrices are the sources of the matter-antimatter asymmetry, as studied in the literature for several proposed theories. The {\it spin-charge-family-theory} is, namely, very promising in showing the right way beyond the {\it standard model}. It predicts families and their mass matrices, explaining the origin of the charges and of the gauge field…
We review a testable, the axion quark nugget (AQN) model outside of the standard WIMP paradigm. The model was originally invented to explain the observed similarity between the dark and the visible components, $Ω_{\rm DM}\approx Ω_{\rm visible}$ in a natural way as both types of matter are formed during the same QCD transition and proportional to the same dimensional fundamental parameter of the system, $Λ_{\rm QCD}$. In this framework the baryogenesis is actually a charge segregation (rather than charge generation) process which is operational due to the $\cal{CP}$-odd axion field, while the g…
We present a model for the Universe in which quantum anomalies are argued to play an important dual role: they are responsible for generating matter-antimatter asymmetry, but also provide time-dependent contributions to the vacuum energy density of "running-vacuum" type, which drive the Universe evolution. During the inflationary phase of a string-inspired Universe, and its subsequent exit, the existence of primordial gravitational waves induce gravitational anomalies, which couple to the Kalb-Ramond (KR)axion field of the massless gravitational string multiplet. Such anomalous CP violating in…
We extend the fraternal twin Higgs scenario to include a novel dark matter candidate as well as a mechanism for generating a matter/antimatter asymmetry in both sectors. A spontaneous breaking of twin color results in quark degrees of freedom that are singlets under the residual twin color group. These twin-color-singlet quarks, along with a subdominant component of twin leptons, constitute the asymmetric dark matter. The asymmetry between matter in antimatter in both sectors is co-generated from the decay of singlet fermions that provide an additional portal between the visible and twin secto…
The fundamental building blocks of the proton, quarks and gluons, have been known for decades. However, we still have an incomplete theoretical and experimental understanding of how these particles and their dynamics give rise to the quantum bound state of the proton and its physical properties, such as for example its spin. The two up and the single down quarks that comprise the proton in the simplest picture account only for a few percent of the proton mass, the bulk of which is in the form of quark kinetic and potential energy and gluon energy from the strong force. An essential feature of …
We review scenarios of baryogenesis through leptogenesis at early epochs of the universe, in string-inspired minimal extensions of the Standard Model (SM), involving heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos. Spontaneous violation of CPT symmetry is induced by appropriate (in general, temperature-dependent) backgrounds of the Kalb-Ramond (KR) axion field, which has its origins in the (bosonic) massless string multiplet. As interesting features of the model, we also discuss two issues associated with quantum (chiral) anomalies: (i) the non-contribution of the KR axion background to the (anomalous) …
