We prove a version of Bourgain's projection theorem for parametrized families of $C^2$ maps, that refines the original statement even in the linear case. As one application, we show that if $A$ is a Borel set of Hausdorff dimension close to $1$ in $\mathbb{R}^2$ or close to $3/2$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$, then for $y\in A$ outside of a very sparse set, the pinned distance set $\{|x-y|:x\in A\}$ has Hausdorff dimension at least $1/2+c$, where $c$ is universal. Furthermore, the same holds if the distances are taken with respect to a $C^2$ norm of positive Gaussian curvature. As further applications, we obtain new bounds on the dimensions of spherical projections, and an improvement over the trivial estimate for incidences between $δ$-balls and $δ$-neighborhoods of curves in the plane, under fairly general assumptions. The proofs depend on a new multiscale decomposition of measures into ``Frostman pieces'' that may be of independent interest.
We generalize Bourgain's discretized projection theorem to higher rank situations. Like Bourgain's theorem, our result yields an estimate for the Hausdorff dimension of the exceptional sets in projection theorems formulated in terms of Hausdorff dimensions. This estimate complements earlier results of Mattila and Falconer.
Our aim is to establish the first two-parameter version of Bourgain's maximal logarithmic inequality on $L^2(\mathbb R^2)$ for the rational frequencies. We achieve this by introducing a variant of a two-parameter Rademacher--Menschov inequality. The method allows us to control an oscillation seminorm as well.
In this paper we prove the following results in the plane. They are related to each other, while each of them has its own interest. First we obtain an $ε_0$-increment on intersection between pencils of $δ$-tubes, under non-concentration conditions. In fact we show it is equivalent to the discretized sum-product problem, thus the $ε_0$ follows from Bourgain's celebrated result. Then we prove a couple of new results on radial projections. We also discussion about the dependence of $ε_0$ and make a new conjecture. A tube condition on Frostman measures, after careful refinement, is also given.
We establish a version of the fractal uncertainty principle, obtained by Bourgain and Dyatlov in 2016, in higher dimensions. The Fourier support is limited to sets $Y\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ which can be covered by finitely many products of $δ$-regular sets in one dimension, but relative to arbitrary axes. Our results remain true if $Y$ is distorted by diffeomorphisms. Our method combines the original approach by Bourgain and Dyatlov, in the more quantitative 2017 rendition by Jin and Zhang, with Cartan set techniques.
We consider decoupling for a fractal subset of the parabola. We reduce studying $l^{2}L^{p}$ decoupling for a fractal subset on the parabola $\{(t, t^2) : 0 \leq t \leq 1\}$ to studying $l^{2}L^{p/3}$ decoupling for the projection of this subset to the interval $[0, 1]$. This generalizes the decoupling theorem of Bourgain-Demeter in the case of the parabola. Due to the sparsity and fractal like structure, this allows us to improve upon Bourgain-Demeter's decoupling theorem for the parabola. In the case when $p/3$ is an even integer we derive theoretical and computational tools to explicitly co…
By using a multiscale analysis, we establish quantitative versions of the Besicovitch projection theorem (almost every projection of a purely unrectifiable set in the plane of finite length has measure zero) and a standard companion result, namely that any planar set with at least two projections of measure zero is purely unrectifiable. We illustrate these results by providing an explicit (but weak) upper bound on the average projection of the $n^{th}$ generation of a product Cantor set.
We show a variable coefficient version of Bourgain's multi-frequency lemma. It can be used to obtain major arc estimates for a discrete Stein--Wainger type operator considered by Krause arXiv:1803.09431 and Roos arXiv:1907.00405.
We prove an endpoint version of the uniform Sobolev inequalities in Kenig-Ruiz-Sogge [8]. It was known that strong type inequalities no longer hold at the endpoints; however, we show that restricted weak type inequalities hold there, which imply the earlier classical result by real interpolation. The key ingredient in our proof is a type of interpolation first introduced by Bourgain [2]. We also prove restricted weak type Stein-Tomas restriction inequalities on some parts of the boundary of a pentagon, which completely characterizes the range of exponents for which the inequalities hold.
Let $A$ be a countable and discrete subset of ${\Bbb R}^d$, $d \ge 2$, of positive upper Beurling density. Let $K$ denote a bounded symmetric convex set with a smooth boundary and everywhere non-vanishing Gaussian curvature. It is known that ${\mathcal E}(A)=\{e^{2 πi x \cdot a}\}_{a \in A}$ cannot serve as an orthogonal basis for $L^2(K)$ \cite{IKT01}. In this paper, we prove that even approximate average orthogonality is an obstacle to the existence of an exponential frame in the following sense. Let $A$ be as above and $ϕ\ge 0$ be a continuous monotonically nonincreasing function on $[0, \i…
Let $K$ and $L$ be two convex bodies in ${\mathbb R^4}$, such that their projections onto all $3$-dimensional subspaces are directly congruent. We prove that if the set of diameters of the bodies satisfy an additional condition and some projections do not have certain symmetries, then $K$ and $L$ coincide up to translation and an orthogonal transformation. We also show that an analogous statement holds for sections of star bodies, and prove the $n$-dimensional versions of these results.
We consider several classical results related to the Hausdorff dimension of exceptional sets of orthogonal projections and try to find out whether they have reasonable formulations in terms of packing dimension. We also investigate the existence of category versions for Marstrand and Falconer-Howroyd-type projection results.
The Besicovitch projection theorem states that if a subset $E$ of the plane has finite length in the sense of Hausdorff measure and is purely unrectifiable (so its intersection with any Lipschitz graph has zero length), then almost every orthogonal projection of $E$ to a line will have zero measure. In other words, the Favard length of a purely unrectifiable $1$-set vanishes. In this article, we show that when linear projections are replaced by certain nonlinear projections called curve projections, this result remains true. In fact, we go further and use multiscale analysis to prove a quantit…
We study a recent result of Bourgain, Clozel and Kahane, a version of which states that a sufficiently nice function $f:\mathbb{R} \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ that coincides with its Fourier transform and vanishes at the origin has a root in the interval $(c, \infty)$, where the optimal $c$ satisfies $0.41 \leq c \leq 0.64$. A similar result holds in higher dimensions. We improve the one-dimensional result to $0.45 \leq c \leq 0.594$, and the lower bound in higher dimensions. We also prove that extremizers exist, and have infinitely many double roots. With this purpose in mind, we establish a new …
We show that in many parametrized families of self-similar measures, their projections, and their convolutions, the set of parameters for which the measure fails to be absolutely continuous is very small - of co-dimension at least one in parameter space. This complements an active line of research concerning similar questions for dimension. Moreover, we establish some regularity of the density outside this small exceptional set, which applies in particular to Bernoulli convolutions; along the way, we prove some new results about the dimensions of self-similar measures and the absolute continui…
We study projectional properties of Poisson cut-out sets $E$ in non-Euclidean spaces. In the first Heisenbeg group, endowed with the Korányi metric, we show that the Hausdorff dimension of the vertical projection $π(E)$ (projection along the center of the Heisenberg group) almost surely equals $\min\{2,dim_H(E)\}$ and that $π(E)$ has non-empty interior if $dim_H(E)>2$. As a corollary, this allows us to determine the Hausdorff dimension of $E$ with respect to the Euclidean metric in terms of its Heisenberg Hausdorff dimension $dim_H (E)$. We also study projections in the one-point compactificat…
