We consider cosmological models where dark energy is described by a dynamical field equipped with the Chameleon screening mechanism, which serves to hide its effects in local dense regions and to conform to Solar System observations. In these models, there is no universal gravitational coupling and here we study the effective couplings that determine the force between massive objects, $G_N$, and the propagation of gravitational waves, $G_{gw}$. In particular, we revisit the Chameleon screening mechanism without neglecting the time dependence of the galactic environment where local regions are embedded in, and analyze the induced time evolution on $G_N$ and $G_{gw}$, which can be tested with Lunar Laser Ranging and direct gravitational waves observations. We explicitly show how and why these two couplings generically differ. We also find that due to the particular way the Chameleon screening mechanism works, their time evolutions are highly suppressed in the weak-field non-relativistic approximation.
We discuss the scalar mode of gravitational waves emerging in the context of $F(R)$ gravity by taking into account the chameleon mechanism. Assuming a toy model with a specific matter distribution to reproduce the environment of detection experiment by a ground-based gravitational wave observatory, we find that chameleon mechanism remarkably suppresses the scalar wave in the atmosphere of Earth, compared with the tensor modes of the gravitational waves. We also discuss the possibility to detect and constrain scalar waves by the current gravitational observatories and advocate a necessity of th…
In chameleon field theories a scalar field can couple to matter with gravitational strength and still evade local gravity constraints due to a combination of self-interactions and the couplings to matter. Originally, these theories were proposed with a constant coupling to matter, however, the chameleon mechanism also extends to the case where the coupling becomes field-dependent. We study the cosmology of chameleon models with power-law couplings and power-law potentials. It is found that these generalized chameleons, when viable, have a background expansion very close to LCDM, but can in som…
We study the field profile of a scalar field $ϕ$ that couples to a matter fluid (dubbed a chameleon field) in the relativistic gravitational background of a spherically symmetric spacetime. Employing a linear expansion in terms of the gravitational potential $Φ_c$ at the surface of a compact object with a constant density, we derive the thin-shell field profile both inside and outside the object, as well as the resulting effective coupling with matter, analytically. We also carry out numerical simulations for the class of inverse power-law potentials $V(ϕ)=M^{4+n} ϕ^{-n}$ by employing the info…
We propose a version of a gravitational theory with the torsion field, induced by the chameleon field. Following Hojman et al. Phys. Rev. D17, 3141 (1976) the results, obtained in Phys. Rev. D90, 045040 (2014), are generalised by extending the Einstein gravity to the Einstein-Cartan gravity with the torsion field as a gradient of the chameleon field through a modification of local gauge invariance of minimal coupling in the Weinberg-Salam electroweak model. The contributions of the chameleon (torsion) field to the observables of electromagnetic and weak processes are calculated. Since in our a…
Certain scalar-tensor theories exhibit the so-called chameleon mechanism, whereby observational signatures of scalar fields are hidden by a combination of self-interactions and interactions with ambient matter. Not all scalar-tensor theories exhibit such a chameleon mechanism, which has been originally found in models with inverse power run-away potentials and field independent couplings to matter. In this paper we investigate field-theories with field-dependent couplings and a power-law potential for the scalar field. We show that the theory indeed is a chameleon field theory. We find the thi…
We analyse a non-relativistic approximation of the Dirac equation for slow fermions, coupled to the chameleon field and torsion in the spacetime with the Schwarzschild metric, taken in the weak gravitational field of the Earth approximation. We follow the analysis of the Dirac equation in the curved spacetime with torsion, proposed by Kostelecky (Phys. Rev. D69, 105009 (2004)), and apply the Foldy--Wouthuysen transformations. We derive the effective low-energy gravitational potentials for slow fermions, coupled to the gravitational field of the Earth, the chameleon field and to torsion with mi…
Chameleon $f(R)$ gravity is equivalent to a class of scalar-tensor theories of gravity with chameleon screening mechanism allowing the theory to satisfy local tests of gravity. Within the framework of chameleon $f(R)$, we study the impact of the chameleon mechanism on the orbital evolution of binary pulsars, and calculate in detail the post-Keplerian (PK) effects (periastron advance, Einstein delay, Shapiro delay, orbital period decay and eccentricity decay) of binary orbit. The differences in PK effects between general relativity (GR) and chameleon $f(R)$ are elegantly quantified by a combina…
The present work is an extensive study of the viable stable solutions of chameleon scalar field models leading to possibilities of an accelerated expansion of the universe. It is found that for various combinations of the chameleon field potential $V(ϕ)$ and the coupling $f(ϕ)$ of the chameleon field with matter, a stable solution for an accelerated expansion is quite possible. The investigation provides a diagnostics for the stability criteria for all sorts of combinations of $V(ϕ)$ and $f(ϕ)$.
We consider models where moduli fields are not stabilized and play the role of quintessence. In order to evade gravitational tests, we investigate the possibility that moduli behave as chameleon fields. We find that, for realistic moduli superpotentials, the chameleon effect is not strong enough, implying that moduli quintessence models are gravitationally ruled out. More generally, we state a no-go theorem for quintessence in supergravity whereby models either behave like a pure cosmological constant or violate gravitational tests
Chameleon mechanism appearing in massive tensor-scalar theory of gravity can effectively reduce locally the non-minimal coupling between the scalar field and matter. This mechanism is invoked to reconcile large-scale departures from general relativity (GR), supposedly accounting for cosmic acceleration, to small scales stringent constraints on GR. In this paper, we carefully investigate this framework on cosmological and solar system scales to derive combined constraints on model parameters, notably by performing a non-ambiguous derivation of observables like luminosity distance and local post…
We report results from the GammeV Chameleon Afterglow Search---a search for chameleon particles created via photon/chameleon oscillations within a magnetic field. This experiment is sensitive to a wide class of chameleon power-law models and dark energy models not previously explored. These results exclude five orders of magnitude in the coupling of chameleons to photons covering a range of four orders of magnitude in chameleon effective mass and, for individual chameleon models, exclude between 4 and 12 orders of magnitude in chameleon couplings to matter.
Current constraints on f(R) gravity from the large-scale structure are at the verge of penetrating into a region where the modified forces become nonlinearly suppressed. For a consistent treatment of observables at these scales, we study cluster quantities produced in chameleon and linearized Hu-Sawicki f(R) gravity dark matter N-body simulations. We find that the standard Navarro-Frenk-White halo density profile and the radial power law for the pseudo phase-space density provide equally good fits for f(R) clusters as they do in the Newtonian scenario. We give qualitative arguments for why thi…
The chameleon mechanism appearing in massive tensor-scalar theory of gravity can effectively reduce the nonminimal coupling between the scalar field and matter. This mechanism is invoked to reconcile cosmological data requiring introduction of Dark Energy with small-scale stringent constraints on General Relativity. In this communication, we present constraints on this mechanism obtained by a cosmological analysis (based on Supernovae Ia data) and by a Solar System analysis (based on PPN formalism).
Recently it was argued that the conformal coupling of the chameleon to matter fields created an issue for early universe cosmology. As standard model degrees of freedom become non-relativistic in the early universe the chameleon is attracted towards a "surfing" solution, so that it arrives at the potential minimum with too large a velocity. This leads to rapid variations in the chameleon's mass and excitation of high energy modes, casting doubts on the classical treatment at Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. Here we present the DBI chameleon, a consistent high energy modification of the chameleon theo…
We show that a coupling between chameleon-like scalar fields and photons induces linear and circular polarization in the light from astrophysical sources. In this context chameleon-like scalar fields includes those of the Olive-Pospelov (OP) model describing a varying fine structure constant. We determine the form of this polarization numerically and give analytic expressions in two useful limits. By comparing the predicted signal with current observations we are able to improve the constraints on the chameleon-photon coupling and the coupling in the OP model by over two orders of magnitude. I…
We consider a noncommutative standard model with a minimal coupling scalar field and a dynamical deformation between the canonical momenta of its scale factor and scalar field, and a chameleon model with a non-minimally coupling scalar field. We indicate that there is a correspondence between these two models, more specific, actually between the noncommutative parameter and the chameleon coupling strength, and also between the matter density of the chameleon model and the noncommutative geometry. In addition, the analogy constrains the type of the matter field in the chameleon model to be near…
In this manuscript, the field equations of a chameleon field in which the matter Lagrangian term is a general function of the scalar field as well as matter field, are derived. The equations are then expressed in Friedmann--Lemaître--Robertson--Walker~(FLRW) framework and the associated phase portraits and a power law solution are discussed in details. It is shown that why non-minimal coupling between the chameleon and matter fields leads to an energy transfer between the fields which consequently, affects the expansion rate of the universe. The transfer direction is determined by the second l…
We investigate the validity of screening mechanism of the fifth force for chameleon field in highly inhomogeneous density profile. For simplicity, we consider a static and spherically symmetric system which is composed of concentric infinitely thin shells. We calculate the fifth force profile by using a numerical method for a relatively large Compton wavelength of the chameleon field. An approximate solution is also derived for the small Compton wavelength limit. Our results show that, if the thin-shell condition for the corresponding smoothed density profile is satisfied, the fifth force is s…
We derive the most general effective low-energy potential to order O(1/m) for slow Dirac fermions with mass m, coupled to gravitational, chameleon and torsion fields in the Einstein-Cartan gravity. The obtained results can be applied to the experimental analysis of gravitational, chameleon and torsion interactions in terrestrial laboratories. We discuss the use of rotating coordinate systems, caused by rotations of devices, for measurements of the torsion vector and tensor components, caused by minimal torsion--fermion couplings (Ivanov and Wellenzohn, Phys. Rev. D92, 065006 (2015)). Using the…
In the present work we have studied some features of the generalized Brans-Dicke (BD) model in which the scalar field is allowed to couple non-minimally with matter sector. Extended holographic Ricci dark energy (EHRDE) has been considered in the above framework of BD cosmology. Some restrictions have been derived for the BD parameter $ω$ and a stronger matter-chameleon coupling has been observed with expansion of the universe. In this framework, the equation of state parameter of EHRDE has behaved like quintom. Also, we have reconstructed the potential and coupling function for BD model for t…
The existing constraints from particle colliders reveal a suspicious but nonlethal metastability for our current electroweak vacuum of Higgs potential in the standard model of particle physics, which is, however, disfavored in the early Universe if the inflationary Hubble scale is larger than the instability scale when Higgs quartic self-coupling runs into negative value. Alternative to previous trials of acquiring a positive effective mass-squared from Higgs quadratic couplings to Ricci scalar or inflaton field, we propose a third approach to stabilize the Higgs potential in the early Univers…
In the present work, it is shown that a chameleon scalar field having a nonminimal coupling with dark matter can give rise to a smooth transition from a decelerated to an accelerated phase of expansion for the universe. It is surprising to note that the coupling with the chameleon scalar field hardly affects the evolution of the dark matter sector, which still redshifts as $a^{-3}$.
We show that a direct coupling between a chameleon-like scalar field and photons can give rise to a modified Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). The coupling induces a mixing between chameleon particles and the CMB photons when they pass through the magnetic field of a galaxy cluster. Both the intensity and the polarization of the radiation are modified. The degree of modification depends strongly on the properties of the galaxy cluster such as magnetic field strength and electron number density. Existing SZ measurements of the Coma cluster enable us to pla…
The chameleon, or generalizations thereof, is a light scalar that couple to matter with gravitational strength, but whose manifestation depends on the ambient matter density. A key feature is that the screening mechanism suppressing its effects in high-density environments is determined by the local scalar field value. Under very general conditions, we prove two theorems limiting its cosmological impact: i) the Compton wavelength of such a scalar can be at most Mpc at present cosmic density, which restricts its impact to non-linear scales; ii) the conformal factor relating Einstein- and Jordan…
Light scalar fields are expected to arise in theories of high energy physics (such as string theory), and find phenomenological motivations in dark energy, dark matter, or neutrino physics. However, the coupling of light scalar fields to ordinary (or dark) matter is strongly constrained from laboratory, solar system, and astrophysical tests of fifth force. One way to evade these constraints in dense environments is through the chameleon mechanism, where the field's mass steeply increases with ambient density. Consequently, the chameleonic force is only sourced by a thin shell near the surface …
In the Einstein-Cartan gravitational theory with the chameleon field, changing its mass in dependence of a density of its environment, we analyze the Friedmann-Einstein equations for the Universe evolution with the expansion parameter $a$ dependent on time only. We analyze the problem of an identification of the chameleon field with quintessence, i.e. a canonical scalar field responsible for dark energy dynamics and for the acceleration of the Universe expansion. We show that since the cosmological constant, related to the relic dark energy density, is induced by torsion (Astrophys. J.829, 47 …
The presence of a scalar field that couples nonminimally and universally to matter can enhance gravitational forces on cosmological scales while restoring general relativity in the Solar neighborhood. In the intermediate regime, kinematically inferred masses experience an additional radial dependence with respect to the underlying distribution of matter, which is caused by the increment of gravitational forces with increasing distance from the Milky Way center. The same effect can influence the internal kinematics of subhalos and cause cuspy matter distributions to appear core-like. Specializi…
The late-time accelerated expansion of the universe could be caused by a scalar field that is screened on small scales, as in chameleon or symmetron scenarios. We present an analogy between thin shell configurations of such scalar fields and electrostatics, which allows calculation of the field profile for general extended bodies. Interestingly, the field demonstrates a `lightning rod' effect, where it becomes enhanced near the ends of a pointy or elongated object. Drawing from this correspondence, we show that non-spherical test bodies immersed in a background field will experience a net torq…
We consider generalized chameleon models where the conformal coupling between matter and gravitational geometries is not only a function of the chameleon field ϕ, but also of its derivatives via higher order co-ordinate invariants. Specifically we consider the first such non-trivial conformal factor A(ϕ,X), where X is the canonical kinetic term for ϕ. The associated phenomenology is investigated and we show that such theories have a new generic mass-altering mechanism, potentially assisting the generation of a sufficiently large chameleon mass in dense environments. The most general effective …
Starting from the assumption that the present accelerated expansion of the Universe is driven by a chameleon scalar field, the function describing a direct coupling between the matter content of the Universe and the scalar field is derived from cosmological considerations. In progressing from cosmology towards astrophysical scales, this function is used to estimate the influence that such nonminimal coupling may have on the properties of usual (polytropic) stars whose matter can interact directly with the cosmological chameleon. It is shown that in order to obtain sizes and masses of compact c…
In order to satisfy limits on the allowed variation of particle masses from big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) until today, the chameleon scalar field is required to reach its attractor solution early on in its cosmological evolution. Brax et al. (2004) have shown this to be possible for certain specific initial conditions on the chameleon field at the end of inflation. However the extreme fine-tuning necessary to achieve this, poses a problem if the chameleon is to be viewed a natural candidate for dark energy. In this article we revisit the behaviour of the chameleon in the early Universe, inclu…
Theories of modified gravity where light scalars with non-trivial self-interactions and non-minimal couplings to matter-chameleon and symmetron theories-dynamically suppress deviations from general relativity in the solar system. On other scales, the environmental nature of the screening means that such scalars may be relevant. The highly-nonlinear nature of screening mechanisms means that they evade classical fifth-force searches, and there has been an intense effort towards designing new and novel tests to probe them, both in the laboratory and using astrophysical objects, and by reinterpret…
One possibility to explain the current accelerated expansion of the universe may be related with the presence of cosmologically evolving scalar whose mass depends on the local matter density (chameleon cosmology). We point out that matter quantum effects in such scalar-tensor theory produce the chameleon scalar field dependent conformal anomaly. Such conformal anomaly adds higher derivative terms to chameleon field equation of motion. As a result, the principal possibility for instabilities appears. These instabilities seem to be irrelevant at small curvature but may become dangerous in the re…
We consider a generalized Brans-Dicke model in which the scalar field has a potential function and is also allowed to couple non-minimally with the matter sector. This anomalous gravitational coupling can in principle avoid the model to pass local gravity experiments. One then usually assumes that the scalar field has a chameleon behavior in the sense that it acquires a density-dependent effective mass. While it can take a small effective mass in cosmological (low-density environment) scale, it has a sufficiently heavy mass in Solar System (large-density environment) and then hides gravity tes…
We have investigated a brane world model in which the gravitational field in the bulk is described both by a metric tensor and a minimally coupled scalar field. This scalar field is taken to be a chameleon with an appropriate potential function. The scalar field interacts with matter and there is an energy transfer between the two components. We find a late-time asymptotic solution which exhibits late-time accelerating expansion. We also show that the Universe recently crosses the phantom barrier without recourse to any exotic matter. We provide some thermodynamic arguments which constrain bot…
This article investigates the profile of the scalar field of a scalar-tensor theory subject to the chameleon mechanism in the context of gravity space missions like the MICROSCOPE experiment. It analyses the experimental situations for models with an inverse power law potential that can in principle induce a fifth force inside the satellite, hence either be detected or constrained. As the mass of the scalar field depends on the local matter density, the screening of the scalar field depends crucially on both the parameters of the theory (potential and non-minimal coupling to matter) and on the…
Scalar-tensor theories whose phenomenology differs significantly from general relativity on large (e.g. cosmological) scales do not typically pass local experimental tests (e.g. in the solar system) unless they present a suitable "screening mechanism". An example is provided by chameleon screening, whereby the local general relativistic behavior is recovered in high density environments, at least in weak-field and quasi-static configurations. Here, we test the validity of chameleon screening in strong-field and highly relativistic/dynamical conditions, by performing fully non-linear simulation…
We analyse a spin precession of slow neutrons in the Einstein-Cartan gravity with torsion, chameleon and magnetic field. For the derivation of the Heisenberg equation of motion of the neutron spin we use the effective low-energy potential, derived by Ivanov and Wellenzohn (Phys. Rev. D92, 125004 (2015)) for slow neutrons, coupled to gravitational, chameleon and torsion fields to order 1/m, where m is the neutron mass. In addition to this low-energy interactions we switch on the interaction of slow neutrons with a magnetic field. We show that to linear order approximation with respect to gravit…
A criterion to seek for compatibility of any given matter coupling with a fundamental theory of physics - assumed here to be the string theory - is developed. We call this criterion as"`compatibility check", and apply it to test different kinds of matter coupling which are familiar in cosmological scenarios. The so called "chameleon effect" - useful to overcome the stringent constraints on additional non gravitational interactions - is reviewed by relaxing several assumptions which are commonly found in the bibliography in order to explore the chameleon behavior of self-interacting scalar fiel…
We extend the chameleon models by considering Scalar-Fluid theories where the coupling between matter and the scalar field can be represented by a quadratic effective potential with density-dependent minimum and mass. In this context, we study the effects of the scalar field on Solar System tests of gravity and show that models passing these stringent constraints can still induce large modifications of Newton's law on galactic scales. On these scales we analyse models which could lead to a percent deviation of Newton's law outside the virial radius. We then model the dark matter halo as a Nava…
In this paper we present a hybrid model of k-essence and chameleon, named as k-chameleon. In this model, due to the chameleon mechanism, the directly strong coupling between the k-chameleon field and matters (cold dark matters and baryons) is allowed. In the radiation dominated epoch, the interaction between the k-chameleon field and background matters can be neglected, the behavior of the k-chameleon therefore is the same as that of the ordinary k-essence. After the onset of matter domination, the strong coupling between the k-chameleon and matters dramatically changes the result of the ordin…
We propose a scenario that can naturally explain the observed dark matter-baryon ratio in the context of bimetric theory with a chameleon field. We introduce two additional gravitational degrees of freedom, the massive graviton and the chameleon field, corresponding to dark matter and dark energy, respectively. The chameleon field is assumed to be non-minimally coupled to dark matter, i.e., the massive graviton, through the graviton mass terms. We find that the dark matter-baryon ratio is dynamically adjusted to the observed value due to the energy transfer by the chameleon field. As a result,…
We consider static, spherically symmetric equilibrium configurations consisting of fermionic dark matter nonminimally coupled to dark energy in the form of a quintessence scalar field. With the scalar field coupling function, the form of which is taken to meet cosmological observations, we estimate the effect of such a nonminimal coupling on the properties of dark matter compact configurations. We show that the masses and sizes of the resulting chameleon dark matter stars are smaller than those of systems with no field present.
As a result of non-linear self-interactions, in chameleon theories where the field couples to matter much more strongly than gravity does, the fifth force between two bodies with thin-shell is independent of their coupling to the field. As a consequence the bounds on the coupling coming from terrestrial tests of gravity, measurements of the Casimir force and those constraints imposed by the physics of compact objects, big-bang nucleosynthesis and measurements of the cosmic microwave background anisotropies can be exponentially relaxed.
Following work by Khoury and Weltman, we introduce a scalar field phi, the chameleon, which is conformally coupled to matter. That is, matter experiences a metric which is a conformal transform (parametrized by phi) of the Einstein metric. The effective potential of the field phi is a sum of its self-interaction term and an exponential term due to the conformal coupling. Under certain conditions on the self-interaction and the coupling, this effective potential has a minimum which depends on the local matter density, as does its second derivative at the minimum. As a result, the scalar field a…
Modified theories of gravity provide us with a unique opportunity to generate innovative tests of gravity. In Chameleon f(R) gravity, the gravitational potential differs from the weak-field limit of general relativity (GR) in a mass dependent way. We develop a probe of gravity which compares high mass clusters, where Chameleon effects are weak, to low mass clusters, where the effects can be strong. We utilize the escape velocity edges in the radius/velocity phase space to infer the gravitational potential profiles on scales of 0.3-1 virial radii. We show that the escape edges of low mass clust…

In this paper we investigate gravitationally bound, spherically symmetric equilibrium configurations consisting of ordinary (polytropic) matter nonminimally coupled to an external chameleon scalar field. We show that this system has static, regular, asymptotically flat general relativistic solutions. The properties of these spherical configurations, such as total mass, distribution of matter, and size, depend strongly on the surrounding scalar field. The mass is found in terms of the parameter $σ$, which is proportional to the central mass density of the ordinary matter. We perform a stability…
We consider a generalized Brans-Dicke model in which the scalar field has a potential function and is also allowed to couple non-minimally with the matter sector. We assume a power law form for the potential and the coupling functions as the inputs of the model and show that acceleration of the universe can be realized for a constrained range of exponent of the potential function. We also argue that this accelerating phase is consistent with a large and positive Brans-Dicke parameter. In our analysis, the potential plays a more important role with respect to the coupling function in dynamics o…
While considering the chameleon scalar field model with the spatially flat FLRW background, we investigate the late-time acceleration phase of the universe, wherein we apply the typical potential usually used in this model. Through setting some constraints on the free parameters of the model, we indicate that the non-minimal coupling between the matter and the scalar field in such a model should be strongly coupled in order to have an accelerated expansion of the universe at the late-time. We also investigate the relative acceleration of the parallel geodesics by obtaining the geodesic deviati…
We propose in this paper an interacting holographic dark energy (IHDE) model in chameleon--tachyon cosmology by interaction between the components of the dark sectors. In the formalism, the interaction term emerges from the scalar field coupling matter lagrangian in the model rather than being inserted into the formalism as an external source for the interaction. The correspondence between the tachyon field and the holographic dark energy (HDE) densities allows to reconstruct the tachyon scalar field and its potential in a flat FRW universe. The model can show the accelerated expansion of the …
In this paper it is shown that in Brans - Dicke theory, if one considers a non-minimal coupling between the matter and the scalar field, it can give rise to a late time accelerated expansion for the universe preceded by a decelerated expansion for very high values of the Brans - Dicke parameter $ω$.
We investigate warm inflationary scenario in which the accelerated expansion of the early Universe is driven by chameleon-like scalar fields. Due to the non-minimal coupling between the scalar field and the matter sector, the energy-momentum tensor of each fluid component is not conserved anymore, and the generalized balance equation is obtained. The new source term in the energy equation can be used to model warm inflation. On the other hand, if the coupling function varies slowly, the model reduces to the standard model used for the description of cold inflation. To test the validity of the …
We consider the Post-Newtonian limit of massive Brans-Dicke theory and we make some notes about the Post-Newtonian limit of the case $ω=0$. This case is dynamically equivalent to the metric $f(R)$ theory. It is known that this theory can be compatible with the solar system tests if Chameleon mechanism occurs. Also, it is known that this mechanism is because of the non-linearity in the field equations produced by the largeness of the local curvature relative to the background curvature. Thus, the linearization of the field equations breaks down. On the other hand we know that Chameleon mechanis…
