An efficient path planner for autonomous car-like vehicles should handle the strong kinematic constraints, particularly in confined spaces commonly encountered while maneuvering in city traffic, and should enable rapid planning, as the city traffic scenarios are highly dynamic. State-of-the-art planning algorithms handle such difficult cases at high computational cost, often yielding non-deterministic results. However, feasible local paths can be quickly generated leveraging the past planning experience gained in the same or similar environment. While learning through supervised training is problematic for real traffic scenarios, we introduce in this paper a novel neural network-based method for path planning, which employs a gradient-based self-supervised learning algorithm to predict feasible paths. This approach strongly exploits the experience gained in the past and rapidly yields feasible maneuver plans for car-like vehicles with limited steering-angle. The effectiveness of such an approach has been confirmed by computational experiments.

Motion planning involves decision making among combinatorial maneuver variants in urban driving. A planner must consider uncertainties and associated risks of the maneuver variants, and subsequently select a maneuver alternative. In this paper we present a planning approach that considers the uncertainties in the prediction and, in case of high uncertainty, postpones the combinatorial decision making to a later time within the planning horizon. With our proposed approach, safe but at the same time not overconservative motion is planned.

This paper presents a hybrid route-path planning model for an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle's task assignment and management while the AUV is operating through the variable littoral waters. Several prioritized tasks distributed in a large scale terrain is defined first; then, considering the limitations over the mission time, vehicle's battery, uncertainty and variability of the underlying operating field, appropriate mission timing and energy management is undertaken. The proposed objective is fulfilled by incorporating a route-planner that is in charge of prioritizing the list of available t…

Revealing the hidden patterns shaping the urban environment is essential to understand its dynamics and to make cities smarter. Recent studies have demonstrated that learning the representations of urban regions can be an effective strategy to uncover the intrinsic characteristics of urban areas. However, existing studies lack in incorporating diversity in urban data sources. In this work, we propose heterogeneous urban graph attention network (HUGAT), which incorporates heterogeneity of diverse urban datasets. In HUGAT, heterogeneous urban graph (HUG) incorporates both the geo-spatial and tem…
Low-altitude urban flight planning for small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) requires accurate vehicle, environment maps, and risk models to assure flight plans consider the urban landscape as well as airspace constraints. This paper presents a suite of motion planning metrics designed for small UAS urban flight. We define map-based and path-based metrics to holistically characterize motion plan quality. Proposed metrics are examined in the context of representative geometric, graph-based, and sampling-based motion planners applied to a multicopter small UAS. A novel multi-objective heuristic …

Urban intersections represent a complex environment for autonomous vehicles with many sources of uncertainty. The vehicle must plan in a stochastic environment with potentially rapid changes in driver behavior. Providing an efficient strategy to navigate through urban intersections is a difficult task. This paper frames the problem of navigating unsignalized intersections as a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP) and solves it using a Monte Carlo sampling method. Empirical results in simulation show that the resulting policy outperforms a threshold-based heuristic strategy on s…

Maneuvering a general 2-trailer with a car-like tractor in backward motion is a task that requires significant skill to master and is unarguably one of the most complicated tasks a truck driver has to perform. This paper presents a path planning and path-following control solution that can be used to automatically plan and execute difficult parking and obstacle avoidance maneuvers by combining backward and forward motion. A lattice-based path planning framework is developed in order to generate kinematically feasible and collision-free paths and a path-following controller is designed to stabi…
Drift control is significant to the safety of autonomous vehicles when there is a sudden loss of traction due to external conditions such as rain or snow. It is a challenging control problem due to the presence of significant sideslip and nearly full saturation of the tires. In this paper, we focus on the control of drift maneuvers following circular paths with either fixed or moving centers, subject to change in the tire-ground interaction, which are common training tasks for drift enthusiasts and can therefore be used as benchmarks of the performance of drift control. In order to achieve the…
The 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge afforded the golden opportunity for the Technische Universität Braunschweig to demonstrate its abilities to develop an autonomously driving vehicle to compete with the world's best competitors. After several stages of qualification, our team CarOLO qualified early for the DARPA Urban Challenge Final Event and was among only eleven teams from initially 89 competitors to compete in the final. We had the ability to work together in a large group of experts, each contributing his expertise in his discipline, and significant organisational, financial and technical sup…

Five car-following models were calibrated, validated and cross-compared. The intelligent driver model performed best among the evaluated models. Considerable behavioral differences between different drivers were found. Calibrated model parameters may not be numerically equivalent with observed ones.
Imitation learning is becoming more and more successful for autonomous driving. End-to-end (raw signal to command) performs well on relatively simple tasks (lane keeping and navigation). Mid-to-mid (environment abstraction to mid-level trajectory representation) or direct perception (raw signal to performance) approaches strive to handle more complex, real life environment and tasks (e.g. complex intersection). In this work, we show that complex urban situations can be handled with raw signal input and mid-level representation. We build a hybrid end-to-mid approach predicting trajectories for …

In November 2007 the international competition DARPA Urban Challenge took place on the former George Airforce Base in Victorville, California to significantly promote the research and development on autonomously driving vehicles for urban environments. In the final race only eleven out of initially 89 competitors participated and "Boss" from Carnegie Mellon University succeeded. This paper summarizes results of the research carried out by all finalists within the last five years after the competition and provides an outlook where further investigation especially for software engineering is now…

We consider the problem of intelligently navigating through complex traffic. Urban situations are defined by the underlying map structure and special regulatory objects of e.g. a stop line or crosswalk. Thereon dynamic vehicles (cars, bicycles, etc.) move forward, while trying to keep accident risks low. Especially at intersections, the combination and interaction of traffic elements is diverse and human drivers need to focus on specific elements which are critical for their behavior. To support the analysis, we present in this paper the so-called Risk Navigation System (RNS). RNS leverages a …
Urban environments offer a challenging scenario for autonomous driving. Globally localizing information, such as a GPS signal, can be unreliable due to signal shadowing and multipath errors. Detailed a priori maps of the environment with sufficient information for autonomous navigation typically require driving the area multiple times to collect large amounts of data, substantial post-processing on that data to obtain the map, and then maintaining updates on the map as the environment changes. This paper addresses the issue of autonomous driving in an urban environment by investigating algorit…

Reinforcement Learning (RL) aims at learning an optimal behavior policy from its own experiments and not rule-based control methods. However, there is no RL algorithm yet capable of handling a task as difficult as urban driving. We present a novel technique, coined implicit affordances, to effectively leverage RL for urban driving thus including lane keeping, pedestrians and vehicles avoidance, and traffic light detection. To our knowledge we are the first to present a successful RL agent handling such a complex task especially regarding the traffic light detection. Furthermore, we have demons…
Urban autonomous driving in the presence of pedestrians as vulnerable road users is still a challenging and less examined research problem. This work formulates navigation in urban environments as a multi objective reinforcement learning problem. A deep learning variant of thresholded lexicographic Q-learning is presented for autonomous navigation amongst pedestrians. The multi objective DQN agent is trained on a custom urban environment developed in CARLA simulator. The proposed method is evaluated by comparing it with a single objective DQN variant on known and unknown environments. Evaluati…

This paper presents a novel framework for planning in unknown and occluded urban spaces. We specifically focus on turns and intersections where occlusions significantly impact navigability. Our approach uses an inpainting model to fill in a sparse, occluded, semantic lidar point cloud and plans dynamically feasible paths for a vehicle to traverse through the open and inpainted spaces. We demonstrate our approach using a car's lidar data with real-time occlusions, and show that by inpainting occluded areas, we can plan longer paths, with more turn options compared to without inpainting; in addi…
For autonomous vehicles, effective behavior planning is crucial to ensure safety of the ego car. In many urban scenarios, it is hard to create sufficiently general heuristic rules, especially for challenging scenarios that some new human drivers find difficult. In this work, we propose a behavior planning structure based on reinforcement learning (RL) which is capable of performing autonomous vehicle behavior planning with a hierarchical structure in simulated urban environments. Application of the hierarchical structure allows the various layers of the behavior planning system to be satisfied…

This paper presents SUMMIT, a high-fidelity simulator that facilitates the development and testing of crowd-driving algorithms. By leveraging the open-source OpenStreetMap map database and a heterogeneous multi-agent motion prediction model developed in our earlier work, SUMMIT simulates dense, unregulated urban traffic for heterogeneous agents at any worldwide locations that OpenStreetMap supports. Using data captured during approximately 2 hours of driving in and around the dense urban center of Austin, TX, a CDGNSS system is demonstrated to achieve 17-cm-accurate 3D urban positioning (95% probability) with solution availability greater than 87%. The results are achieved without any aiding by inertial, electro-optical, or odometry sensors. Development and evaluation of the unaided GNSS-based precise po…
We can use driving data collected over a long period of time to extract rich information about how vehicles behave in different areas of the roads. In this paper, we introduce the concept of directional primitives, which is a representation of prior information of road networks. Specifically, we represent the uncertainty of directions using a mixture of von Mises distributions and associated speeds using gamma distributions. These location-dependent primitives can be combined with motion information of surrounding vehicles to predict their future behavior in the form of probability distributio…
