The gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows provide an unique opportunity to study the interstellar medium (ISM) of star-forming galaxies at high-redshift. The GRB-DLAs (damped Lyman-$α$ absorbers) contain a large neutral hydrogen column density, N(H I), and are observed against the GRB afterglow. A large fraction of GRB-DLAs show presence of molecular hydrogen (H$_2$) which is an indicator of star-formation. Hence it is important to study those GRB-DLAs which have H$_2$ lines to decipher and understand their physical conditions. The GRB-DLAs 121024A and 120815A, situated at redshift 2.30 and 2.36 respectively, are two such important H$_2$-bearing GRB-DLAs. Besides H$_2$, these two GRB-DLAs also show many metal lines. In this work we have carried out a detail numerical study on the H$_2$ lines, as well as on those metal lines, in GRB-DLAs 121024A and 120815A self-consistently. We use the spectral synthesis code CLOUDY for this study. This modeling helps us to determine the underlying physical conditions which give rise such lines and hence to understand these two GRB-DLAs in much more detail than any other previous investigation. We find that the hydrogen densities for these two H$_2$-bearing DLAs are $\geq$ 60 cm$^{-3}$. Moreover our study infers that the linear sizes are $\leq 17.7$ pc for these two GRB-DLAs, and the mean gas temperatures averaged over the cloud thickness, are $\leq$ 140 K.
We present results of our numerical simulation of three H2-bearing damped Lyman alpha absorbers (DLAs) in the redshift interval ~ 2-3. The systems we have modelled are the DLAs at zabs = 2.3377 towards the quasar LBQS 1232+0815, at zabs = 2.41837 towards SDSS J143912.04+111740.5 and at zabs = 2.6265 towards FBQS J081240.6+320808. We have used the spectral synthesis code CLOUDY to simulate the physical environment of these DLAs, and constrain the density, radiation field, geometry and dust-grain properties of the DLAs self-consistently based on the observed column densities of various atomic an…
We present results from spectroscopic observations with X-shooter at the Very Large Telescope of seven H2-bearing DLAs at high redshifts (z$_{\rm abs}\sim 2.5-3$). These DLAs were originally selected from the presence of strong H$_2$ lines directly seen at the DLA redshift in low-resolution, low S/N SDSS spectra. We confirm the detection of molecular hydrogen in all of them. We measure the column densities of HI, H$_2$ in various rotational levels, and metal species, and associated dust extinction. The metallicities, obtained from undepleted species, are in the range logZ=-0.8 to -0.2. We disc…
Context. Several issues regarding the nature of dust at high redshift remain unresolved: its composition, its production and growth mechanisms, and its effect on background sources. Aims. We provide a more accurate relation between dust depletion levels and dust-to-metals ratio (DTM), and to use the DTM to investigate the origin and evolution of dust in the high-redshift Universe via Gamma-ray burst damped Lyman-alpha absorbers (GRB-DLAs). Methods. We use absorption-line measured metal column densities for a total of 19 GRB-DLAs, including five new GRB afterglow spectra from VLT/X-shooter. We …
We present the largest, publicly available, sample of Damped Lyman-$α$ systems (DLAs) along Gamma-ray Bursts (GRB) line of sights in order to investigate the environmental properties of long GRBs in the $z=1.8-6$ redshift range. Compared with the most recent quasar DLAs sample (QSO-DLA), our analysis shows that GRB-DLAs probe a more metal enriched environment at $z\gtrsim3$, up to $[X/H]\sim-0.5$. In the $z=2-3$ redshift range, despite the large number of lower limits, there are hints that the two populations may be more similar (only at 90\% significance level). Also at \hiz, the GRB-DLA aver…
We present the results from VLT/X-shooter spectroscopic observations of 11 extremely strong intervening damped Lyman-alpha absorbers (ESDLAs) initially selected as high N(Hi) (i.e.>=5x10^21 cm-2) candidates from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We confirm the high Hi column densities which we measure to be in the range log N(Hi) = 21.6-22.4. Molecular hydrogen is detected with high column densities (N(H_2)>=10^18 cm-2) in five out of eleven systems, three of which are reported here for the first time. We compare the chemical properties of this sample of ESDLAs, supplemented with literature…
Here we built up a sample of 22 GRBs at redshifts $z > 2$ observed with X-shooter to determine the abundances of hydrogen, metals, dust, and molecular species. This allows us to study the metallicity and dust depletion effects in the neutral ISM at high redshift and to answer the question whether (and why) there might be a lack of H$_2$ in GRB-DLAs. We fit absorption lines and measure the column densities of different metal species as well as atomic and molecular hydrogen. The derived relative abundances are used to fit dust depletion sequences and determine the dust-to-metals ratio and the ho…
We analyze a sample of 16 absorption systems intrinsic to long duration GRB host galaxies at $z \gtrsim 2$ for which the metallicities are known. We compare the relation between the metallicity and cold gas velocity width for this sample to that of the QSO-DLAs, and find complete agreement. We then compare the redshift evolution of the mass-metallicity relation of our sample to that of QSO-DLAs and find that also GRB hosts favour a late onset of this evolution, around a redshift of $\approx 2.6$. We compute predicted stellar masses for the GRB host galaxies using the prescription determined fr…
The cosmic chemical enrichment as measured from damped Ly$α$ absorbers (DLAs) will be underestimated if dusty and metal-rich absorbers have evaded identification. Here we report the discovery and present the spectroscopic observations of a quasar, KV-RQ\,1500-0031, at $z=2.520$ reddened by a likely dusty DLA at $z=2.428$ and a strong MgII absorber at $z=1.603$. This quasar was identified as part of the KiDS-VIKING Red Quasar (KV-RQ) survey, specifically aimed at targeting dusty absorbers which may cause the background quasars to escape the optical selection of e.g. the SDSS quasar survey. For …
We report the detections of molecular hydrogen (H$_2$), vibrationally-excited H$_2$ (H$^*_2$), and neutral atomic carbon (CI), in two new afterglow spectra of GRBs\,181020A ($z=2.938$) and 190114A ($z=3.376$), observed with X-shooter at the Very Large Telescope (VLT). Both host-galaxy absorption systems are characterized by strong damped Lyman-$α$ absorbers (DLAs) and substantial amounts of molecular hydrogen with $\log N$(HI, H$_2$) = $22.20\pm 0.05,~20.40\pm 0.04$ (GRB\,181020A) and $\log N$(HI, H$_2$) = $22.15\pm 0.05,~19.44\pm 0.04$ (GRB\,190114A). The DLA metallicites, depletion levels an…
We present the results of a systematic search for molecular hydrogen (H2) in low redshift ($ 0.05 \lesssim z \lesssim 0.7$) DLAs and sub-DLAs with $N(HI) \gtrsim 10^{19.0}$ cm$^{-2}$, in the archival HST/COS spectra. Our core sample is comprised of 27 systems with a median $\log N(HI) = 19.6$. On the average, our survey is sensitive down to $\log N(H2) = 14.4$ corresponding to a molecular fraction of $\log f_{H2} = -4.9$ at the median $N(HI)$. H2 is detected in 10 cases (3/5 DLAs and 7/22 sub-DLAs) down to this $f_{H2}$ limit. The H2 detection rate of $50^{+25}_{-12}$ percent seen in our sampl…
We present results of analysis of physical conditions (number density, intensity of UV field, kinetic temperature) in the cold H$_2$-bearing interstellar medium of local and high redshift galaxies. Our measurements based on the fit to the observed population of H$_2$ rotational levels and CI fine-structure levels with the help of grids of numerical models calculated with the PDR Meudon code. A joint analysis of low H$_2$ rotational levels and CI fine-structure levels allows to break the degeneracy in the $I_{UV}-n_{\rm{H}}$ plane and provides significantly tighter constraints on the number den…
Chlorine and molecular hydrogen are known to be tightly linked together in the cold phase of the local interstellar medium through rapid chemical reactions. We present here the first systematic study of this relation at high redshifts using H$_2$-bearing damped Ly$α$ systems (DLAs) detected along quasar lines of sight. Using high-resolution spectroscopic data from VLT/UVES and Keck/HIRES, we report the detection of Cl$\,$I in 9 DLAs (including 5 new detections) out of 18 high-$z$ DLAs with $N($H$_2) \ge 10^{17.3}\,$cm$^{-2}$ (including a new H$_2$ detection at $z=3.09145$ towards J$\,$2100$-$0…
The extreme brightness of gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows and their simple spectral shape make them ideal beacons to study the interstellar medium of their host galaxies through absorption line spectroscopy. Using 69 low-resolution GRB afterglow spectra, we conduct a study of the rest-frame equivalent width (EW) distribution of features with an average rest-frame EW larger than 0.5 A. To compare an individual GRB with the sample, we develop EW diagrams as a graphical tool, and we give a catalogue with diagrams for the 69 spectra. We introduce a line strength parameter (LSP) that allows us to …
We performed multi-band deep imaging of the field around GRB 050730 to identify the host galaxies of intervening absorbers, which consist of a damped Lyα absorption (DLA) system at zabs=3.564, a sub-DLA system at zabs=3.022, and strong MgII absorption systems at zabs=1.773 and 2.253. Our observations were performed after the gamma-ray burst afterglow had disappeared. Thus, our imaging survey has a higher sensitivity to the host galaxies of the intervening absorbers than the normal imaging surveys in the direction of QSOs, for which the QSO glare tends to hide the foreground galaxies. In this d…
We present a detailed analysis of a H$_2$-rich, extremely strong intervening Damped Ly-$α$ Absorption system (DLA) at $z_{\rm abs}=2.786$ towards the quasar J$\,$0843+0221, observed with the Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph on the Very Large Telescope. The total column density of molecular (resp. atomic) hydrogen is $\log N$(H$_2$)=$21.21\pm0.02$ (resp. $\log N$(H$\,$I)=$21.82\pm0.11$), making it to be the first case in quasar absorption lines studies with H$_2$ column density as high as what is seen in $^{13}$CO-selected clouds in the Milky-Way. We find that this system has one of …
We present a systematic study of deuterated molecular hydrogen (HD) at high redshift, detected in absorption in the spectra of quasars. We present four new identifications of HD lines associated with known $\rm H_2$-bearing Damped Lyman-$α$ systems. In addition, we measure upper limits on the $\rm HD$ column density in twelve recently identified $\rm H_2$-bearing DLAs. We find that the new $\rm HD$ detections have similar $N({\rm HD})/N(\rm H_2)$ ratios as previously found, further strengthening a marked difference with measurements through the Galaxy. This is likely due to differences in phys…
We present a survey for neutral atomic-carbon (CI) along gamma-ray burst (GRB) sightlines, which probes the shielded neutral gas-phase in the interstellar medium (ISM) of GRB host galaxies at high redshift. We compile a sample of 29 medium- to high-resolution GRB optical afterglow spectra spanning a redshift range through most of cosmic time from $1 < z < 6$. We find that seven ($\approx 25\%$) of the GRBs entering our statistical sample have CI detected in absorption. It is evident that there is a strong excess of cold gas in GRB hosts compared to absorbers in quasar sightlines. We investigat…
We argue that the lack of observed damped Lyman alpha (DLA) systems that simultaneously have high HI columns densities and high metallicities results naturally from the formation of molecules in the cold phase of a two-phase atomic medium in pressure balance. Our result applies equally well in diffuse systems where the ultraviolet radiation field is dominated by the extragalactic background and in dense star-forming ones, where the local radiation field is likely to be orders of magnitude higher. We point out that such a radiation-insensitive model is required to explain the absence of high co…
To explore the role of titanium- and calcium-dust depletion in gas in and around galaxies we systematically study Ti/Ca abundance ratios in intervening absorption-line systems at low and high redshift. We investigate high-resolution optical spectra obtained by the UVES instrument at the Very Large Telescope and spectroscopically analyze 34 absorption-line systems at z<=0.5 to measure column densities (or limits) for CaII and TiII. We complement our UVES data set with previously published absorption-line data on Ti/Ca for redshifts up to z~3.8. Our absorber sample contains 110 absorbers (DLAs, …
