Turbulent transport is known to limit the plasma confinement of present-day optimized stellarators. To address this issue, a novel method to strongly suppress turbulence in such devices is proposed, namely the resonant wave-particle interaction of supra-thermal particles - e.g., from ion-cyclotron-resonance-frequency (ICRF) heating - with turbulence-driving microinstabilities like ion-temperature-gradient (ITG) modes. The effectiveness of this mechanism is demonstrated via analytic theory and large-scale gyrokinetic simulations, revealing an overall turbulence reduction by up to $80\%$. These results hold the promise of new and still unexplored stellarator scenarios with enhanced confinement and improved performance, essential for achieving burning plasmas in future devices.
A good understanding of the confinement of energetic ions in non-axisymmetric magnetic fields is key for the design of reactors based on the stellarator concept. In this work, we develop a model that, based on the radially-local bounce-averaged drift-kinetic equation, classifies orbits and succeeds in predicting configuration-dependent aspects of the prompt losses of energetic ions in stellarators. Such a model could in turn be employed in the optimization stage of the design of new devices.
Nine stellarator configurations, three quasiaxisymmetric, three quasihelically symmetric and three non-quasisymmetric are scaled to ARIES-CS size and analyzed for energetic particle content. The best performing configurations with regard to energetic particle confinement also perform the best on the neoclassical Γc metric, which attempts to align contours of the second adiabatic invariant with flux surfaces. Quasisymmetric configurations that simultaneously perform well on Γc and quasisymmetry have the best overall confinement, with collisional losses under 3%, approaching the performance of I…
Quasisymmetry can greatly improve the confinement of energetic particles and thermal plasma in a stellarator. The magnetic field of a quasisymmetric stellarator at high plasma pressure is significantly affected by the bootstrap current, but the computational cost of accurate stellarator bootstrap calculations has precluded use inside optimization. Here, a new efficient method is demonstrated for optimization of quasisymmetric stellarator configurations such that the bootstrap current profile is consistent with the geometry. The approach is based on the fact that all neoclassical phenomena in q…
In fusion devices, the geometry of the confining magnetic field has a significant impact on the instabilities that drive turbulent heat loss. This is especially true of stellarators, where the "trapped electron mode" (TEM) is stabilised if specific optimisation criteria are satisfied, as in the Wendelstein 7-X experiment (W7-X). Here we find, by numerical simulation, that W7-X indeed has low TEM-driven transport, and also benefits from stabilisation of the ion-temperature-gradient mode, giving theoretical support for the existence of enhanced confinement regimes at finite density gradients.

A stellarator is said to be omnigeneous if all particles have vanishing average radial drifts. In omnigeneous stellarators, particles are perfectly confined in the absence of turbulence and collisions, whereas in non-omnigeneous configurations, particle can drift large radial distances. One of the consequences of omnigeneity is that the unfavorable inverse scaling with collisionality of the stellarator neoclassical fluxes disappears. In the pioneering and influential article [Cary~J~R and Shasharina~S~G 1997 {\it Phys. Plasmas} {\bf 4} 3323], the conditions that the magnetic field of a stellar…
In the design of stellarators, energetic particle confinement is a critical point of concern which remains challenging to study from a numerical point of view. Standard Monte Carlo analyses are highly expensive because a large number of particle trajectories need to be integrated over long time scales, and small time steps must be taken to accurately capture the features of the wide variety of trajectories. Even when they are based on guiding center trajectories, as opposed to full-orbit trajectories, these standard Monte Carlo studies are too expensive to be included in most stellarator optim…
This work introduces meta estimators that combine multiple multifidelity techniques based on control variates, importance sampling, and information reuse to yield a quasi-multiplicative amount of variance reduction. The proposed meta estimators are particularly efficient within outer-loop applications when the input distribution of the uncertainties changes during the outer loop, which is often the case in reliability-based design and shape optimization. We derive asymptotic bounds of the variance reduction of the meta estimators in the limit of convergence of the outer-loop results. We demons…
It is found that the presence of the so-called non-axisymmetric resonances of wave-particle interaction in stellarators [which are associated with the lack of axial symmetry of the magnetic configuration, Kolesnichenko et al., Phys. Plasmas 9 (2002) 517] may have a strong stabilizing influence through Landau mechanism on the Toroidicity-induced Alfvén Eigenmodes (TAE) and isomon modes (Alfvénic modes with equal poloidal and toroidal mode numbers and frequencies in the continuum region) destabilized by the energetic ions. These resonances involve largest harmonics of the equilibrium magnetic fi…
In recent years, a strong reduction of plasma turbulence in the presence of energetic particles has been reported in a number of magnetic confinement experiments and corresponding gyrokinetic simulations. While highly relevant to performance predictions for burning plasmas, an explanation for this primarily nonlinear effect has remained elusive so far. A thorough analysis finds that linearly marginally stable energetic particle driven modes are excited nonlinearly, depleting the energy content of the turbulence and acting as an additional catalyst for energy transfer to zonal modes (the domina…
A newly developed sensitivity-driven approach is employed to study the role of energetic particles in suppressing turbulence-inducing micro-instabilities for a set of realistic JET-like cases with NBI deuterium and ICRH $^3$He fast ions. First, the efficiency of the sensitivity-driven approach is showcased for scans in a $21$-dimensional parameter space, for which only $250$ simulations are necessary. The same scan performed with traditional Cartesian grids with only two points in each of the $21$ dimensions would require $2^{21} = 2,097,152$ simulations. Then, a $14$-dimensional parameter sub…
Collisionless physics primarily determines the transport of fusion-born alpha particles in 3D equilibria. Several transport mechanisms have been implicated in stellarator configurations, including stochastic diffusion due to class transitions, ripple trapping, and banana drift-convective orbits. Given the guiding center dynamics in a set of six quasihelical and quasiaxisymmetric equilibria, we perform a classification of trapping states and transport mechanisms. In addition to banana drift convection and ripple transport, we observe substantial non-conservation of the parallel adiabatic invari…
During flares and coronal mass ejections, energetic electrons from coronal sources typically have very long lifetimes compared to the transit times across the systems, suggesting confinement in the source region. Particle-in-cell simulations are carried out to explore the mechanisms of energetic electron transport from the corona to the chromosphere and possible confinement. We set up an initial system of pre-accelerated hot electrons in contact with ambient cold electrons along the local magnetic field, and let it evolve over time. Suppression of transport by a nonlinear, highly localized ele…
Transfer of free energy from large to small velocity-space scales by phase mixing leads to Landau damping in a linear plasma. In a turbulent drift-kinetic plasma, this transfer is statistically nearly canceled by an inverse transfer from small to large velocity-space scales due to "anti-phase-mixing" modes excited by a stochastic form of plasma echo. Fluid moments (density, velocity, temperature) are thus approximately energetically isolated from the higher moments of the distribution function, so phase mixing is ineffective as a dissipation mechanism when the plasma collisionality is small.
The expansion of plasma with non-parallel temperature and density gradients, and the generation of magnetic field via the Biermann battery is modeled using particle-in-cell simulations that include collisional effects via Monte Carlo methods. A scaling of the degree of collisionality shows that an anisotropy can be produced, and drive the Weibel instability, for gradient scales shorter than the mean free path. For larger collision rates, the Biermann battery dominates as the cause of magnetic field generation. When the most energetic particles remain collisionless, the Nernst effect causes the…
A recent characterization of core turbulence carried out with a Doppler reflectometer in the optimized stellarator Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) found that discharges achieving high ion temperatures at the core featured an ITG-like suppression of density fluctuations driven by a reduction of the gradient ratio $η_i = L_n/L_{T_i}$ [D. Carralero et al., Nucl. Fusion, 2021]. In order to confirm the role of ITG turbulence in this process, we set out to establish experimentally the relation between core density fluctuations, turbulent heat flux and global confinement. With this aim, we consider the scenar…
The first neutral beam injection (NBI) experiments in Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator were conducted in the summer of 2018. The NBI system is used to heat the magnetically confined plasma by neutralising an accelerated hydrogen ion beam and directing it into the plasma, where the resulting energetic ions release their energy to heat the plasma. The modelling of the NBI fast ion experiments has commenced, including estimation of the shine-through and the orbit-losses. The stellarator has a wide-angle infra red (IR) imaging system to monitor the machine plasma facing component surface tempera…
First results from the optimized helias Wendelstein 7-X stellarator (W7-X) have shown that core transport is no longer mostly neoclassical, as is the case in previous kinds of stellarators. Instead, turbulent transport poses a serious limitation to the global performance of the machine. Several studies have found this particularly relevant for ion transport, with core ion temperatures becoming clamped at relatively low values of $T_{i} \simeq 1.7$ keV, except in the few scenarios in which turbulence can be suppressed. In order to understand turbulent mechanisms at play, it is important to have…

The aim of this study is to analyze the stability of the Alfven eigenmodes (AE) in the Chinese First Quasi-axisymmetric Stellarator (CFQS). The AE stability is calculated using the code FAR3d that solves the reduced MHD equations to describe the linear evolution of the poloidal flux and the toroidal component of the vorticity in a full 3D system, coupled with equations of density and parallel velocity moment for the energetic particles (EP) species including the effect of the helical couplings and acoustic modes. The Landau damping and resonant destabilization effects are added in the model by…
The flexible Heliac coil set of helical axis stellarator H-1 (R=1m, <r>~0.15-0.2 m) permits access to a wide range of magnetic configurations. Surprisingly, in the absence of any obvious population of energetic particles, Alfven modes normally associated with energetic populations in larger fusion experiments are observed. Using H-1's unique combination of flexibility and advanced diagnostics, RF-generated plasma in H-1 is shown to have a very complex dependence on configuration of both the electron density and fluctuations in the MHD Alfven range. Magnetic fluctuations range from highly coher…
The key result of the present work is the theoretical prediction and observation of the formation of a new type of transport barrier in fusion plasmas, called F-ATB (fast ion-induced anomalous transport barrier). As demonstrated through state-of-the-art global electrostatic and electromagnetic simulations, the F-ATB is characterized by a full suppression of the turbulent transport - caused by strongly sheared, axisymmetric $E \times B$ flows - and an increase of the neoclassical counterpart, albeit keeping the overall fluxes at significantly reduced levels. The trigger mechanism is shown to be…
The transport of the energy contained in electrons, both thermal and suprathermal, in solar flares plays a key role in our understanding of many aspects of the flare phenomenon, from the spatial distribution of hard X-ray emission to global energetics. Motivated by recent {\em RHESSI} observations that point to the existence of a mechanism that confines electrons to the coronal parts of flare loops more effectively than Coulomb collisions, we here consider the impact of pitch-angle scattering off turbulent magnetic fluctuations on the parallel transport of electrons in flaring coronal loops. I…
Fast ions have recently been found to significantly impact and partially suppress plasma turbulence both in experimental and numerical studies in a number of scenarios. Understanding the underlying physics and identifying the range of their beneficial effect is an essential task for future fusion reactors, where highly energetic ions are generated through fusion reactions and external heating schemes. However, in many of the gyrokinetic codes fast ions are, for simplicity, treated as equivalent-Maxwellian-distributed particle species, although it is well known that to rigorously model highly n…
A case study in bifurcation and stability analysis is presented, in which reduced dynamical system modelling yields substantial new global and predictive information about the behaviour of a complex system. The first smooth pathway, free of pathological and persistent degenerate singularities, is surveyed through the parameter space of a nonlinear dynamical model for a gradient-driven, turbulence-shear flow energetics in magnetized fusion plasmas. Along the route various obstacles and features are identified and treated appropriately. An organizing centre of low codimension is shown to be robu…
