Human beings have developed fantastic abilities to integrate information from various sensory sources exploring their inherent complementarity. Perceptual capabilities are therefore heightened, enabling, for instance, the well-known "cocktail party" and McGurk effects, i.e., speech disambiguation from a panoply of sound signals. This fusion ability is also key in refining the perception of sound source location, as in distinguishing whose voice is being heard in a group conversation. Furthermore, neuroscience has successfully identified the superior colliculus region in the brain as the one responsible for this modality fusion, with a handful of biological models having been proposed to approach its underlying neurophysiological process. Deriving inspiration from one of these models, this paper presents a methodology for effectively fusing correlated auditory and visual information for active speaker detection. Such an ability can have a wide range of applications, from teleconferencing systems to social robotics. The detection approach initially routes auditory and visual information through two specialized neural network structures. The resulting embeddings are fused via a novel layer based on the superior colliculus, whose topological structure emulates spatial neuron cross-mapping of unimodal perceptual fields. The validation process employed two publicly available datasets, with achieved results confirming and greatly surpassing initial expectations.

Visual speech (i.e., lip motion) is highly related to auditory speech due to the co-occurrence and synchronization in speech production. This paper investigates this correlation and proposes a cross-modal speech co-learning paradigm. The primary motivation of our cross-modal co-learning method is modeling one modality aided by exploiting knowledge from another modality. Specifically, two cross-modal boosters are introduced based on an audio-visual pseudo-siamese structure to learn the modality-transformed correlation. Inside each booster, a max-feature-map embedded Transformer variant is propo…
Speaker diarization is one of the critical components of computational media intelligence as it enables a character-level analysis of story portrayals and media content understanding. Automated audio-based speaker diarization of entertainment media poses challenges due to the diverse acoustic conditions present in media content, be it background music, overlapping speakers, or sound effects. At the same time, speaking faces in the visual modality provide complementary information and not prone to the errors seen in the audio modality. In this paper, we address the problem of speaker diarizatio…

Our objective is an audio-visual model for separating a single speaker from a mixture of sounds such as other speakers and background noise. Moreover, we wish to hear the speaker even when the visual cues are temporarily absent due to occlusion. To this end we introduce a deep audio-visual speech enhancement network that is able to separate a speaker's voice by conditioning on both the speaker's lip movements and/or a representation of their voice. The voice representation can be obtained by either (i) enrollment, or (ii) by self-enrollment -- learning the representation on-the-fly given suffi…

Meetings are a common activity in professional contexts, and it remains challenging to endow vocal assistants with advanced functionalities to facilitate meeting management. In this context, a task like active speaker detection can provide useful insights to model interaction between meeting participants. Motivated by our application context related to advanced meeting assistant, we want to combine audio and visual information to achieve the best possible performance. In this paper, we propose two different types of fusion for the detection of the active speaker, combining two visual modalitie…
The strong relation between face and voice can aid active speaker detection systems when faces are visible, even in difficult settings, when the face of a speaker is not clear or when there are several people in the same scene. By being capable of estimating the frontal facial representation of a person from his/her speech, it becomes easier to determine whether he/she is a potential candidate for being classified as an active speaker, even in challenging cases in which no mouth movement is detected from any person in that same scene. By incorporating a face-voice association neural network in…
It is now well established from a variety of studies that there is a significant benefit from combining video and audio data in detecting active speakers. However, either of the modalities can potentially mislead audiovisual fusion by inducing unreliable or deceptive information. This paper outlines active speaker detection as a multi-objective learning problem to leverage best of each modalities using a novel self-attention, uncertainty-based multimodal fusion scheme. Results obtained show that the proposed multi-objective learning architecture outperforms traditional approaches in improving …

Estimating the positions of multiple speakers can be helpful for tasks like automatic speech recognition or speaker diarization. Both applications benefit from a known speaker position when, for instance, applying beamforming or assigning unique speaker identities. Recently, several approaches utilizing acoustic signals augmented with visual data have been proposed for this task. However, both the acoustic and the visual modality may be corrupted in specific spatial regions, for instance due to poor lighting conditions or to the presence of background noise. This paper proposes a novel audiovi…
Biometric systems are nowadays employed across a broad range of applications. They provide high security and efficiency and, in many cases, are user friendly. Despite these and other advantages, biometric systems in general and Automatic speaker verification (ASV) systems in particular can be vulnerable to attack presentations. The most recent ASVSpoof 2019 competition showed that most forms of attacks can be detected reliably with ensemble classifier-based presentation attack detection (PAD) approaches. These, though, depend fundamentally upon the complementarity of systems in the ensemble. W…

This paper presents a self-supervised method for visual detection of the active speaker in a multi-person spoken interaction scenario. Active speaker detection is a fundamental prerequisite for any artificial cognitive system attempting to acquire language in social settings. The proposed method is intended to complement the acoustic detection of the active speaker, thus improving the system robustness in noisy conditions. The method can detect an arbitrary number of possibly overlapping active speakers based exclusively on visual information about their face. Furthermore, the method does not …
Active speaker detection in videos addresses associating a source face, visible in the video frames, with the underlying speech in the audio modality. The two primary sources of information to derive such a speech-face relationship are i) visual activity and its interaction with the speech signal and ii) co-occurrences of speakers' identities across modalities in the form of face and speech. The two approaches have their limitations: the audio-visual activity models get confused with other frequently occurring vocal activities, such as laughing and chewing, while the speakers' identity-based m…

Recent years have seen a surge in finding association between faces and voices within a cross-modal biometric application along with speaker recognition. Inspired from this, we introduce a challenging task in establishing association between faces and voices across multiple languages spoken by the same set of persons. The aim of this paper is to answer two closely related questions: "Is face-voice association language independent?" and "Can a speaker be recognised irrespective of the spoken language?". These two questions are very important to understand effectiveness and to boost development …
In this paper, we show how to use audio to supervise the learning of active speaker detection in video. Voice Activity Detection (VAD) guides the learning of the vision-based classifier in a weakly supervised manner. The classifier uses spatio-temporal features to encode upper body motion - facial expressions and gesticulations associated with speaking. We further improve a generic model for active speaker detection by learning person specific models. Finally, we demonstrate the online adaptation of generic models learnt on one dataset, to previously unseen people in a new dataset, again using…

Speech is a means of communication which relies on both audio and visual information. The absence of one modality can often lead to confusion or misinterpretation of information. In this paper we present an end-to-end temporal model capable of directly synthesising audio from silent video, without needing to transform to-and-from intermediate features. Our proposed approach, based on GANs is capable of producing natural sounding, intelligible speech which is synchronised with the video. The performance of our model is evaluated on the GRID dataset for both speaker dependent and speaker indepen…
Thanks to recent advances in deep learning, sophisticated generation tools exist, nowadays, that produce extremely realistic synthetic speech. However, malicious uses of such tools are possible and likely, posing a serious threat to our society. Hence, synthetic voice detection has become a pressing research topic, and a large variety of detection methods have been recently proposed. Unfortunately, they hardly generalize to synthetic audios generated by tools never seen in the training phase, which makes them unfit to face real-world scenarios. In this work, we aim at overcoming this issue by …
