We report the discovery of the oldest (~55 Myr) mid-M type star known to host on-going accretion. 2MASS J15460752-6258042 (2M1546, spectral type M5, 59.2 pc) shows spectroscopic signs of accretion such as strong Ha, He I, and [O I] emission lines, from which we estimate an accretion rate of ~10^-10 Msun/yr. Considering the clearly detected infrared excess in all WISE bands, the shape of its spectral energy distribution and its age, we believe the star is surrounded by a transitional disc, clearly with some gas still present at inner radii. The position and kinematics of the star from Gaia DR2 and our own radial velocity measurements suggest membership in the nearby ~55 Myr-old Argus moving group. At only 59pc from Earth, 2M1546 is one of the nearest accreting mid-M dwarfs, making it an ideal target for studying the upper limit on the lifetimes of gas-rich discs around low mass stars.
To fully characterize the atmospheres, or lack thereof, of terrestrial exoplanets we must include the high-energy environments provided by their host stars. The nearby mid-M dwarf LHS 3844 hosts a terrestrial world which lacks a substantial atmosphere. We present a time series UV spectrum of LHS 3844 from 1131-3215A captured by HST/COS. We detect one flare in the FUV, which has an absolute energy of 8.96+/-0.79e28 erg and an equivalent duration of 355+/-31 s. We extract the flare and quiescent UV spectra separately. For each spectrum we estimate the Ly-alpha flux using correlations between UV …

In this paper we present new ALMA observations towards the proto-planet hosting transitional disc of Herbig Ae/Be star HD 100546. This includes resolved 1.3 mm continuum, $^{13}$CO and the first detection of C$^{18}$O in this disc, which displays azimuthal asymmetry in regions spatially coincident with structures previously identified in HST images related to spiral arms. The lower limit on the mass of the dust disc is calculated to be 9.6x10$^{-4}$M$_\odot$. A firm lower-limit on the total gas mass calculated from optically thin, mid-plane tracing C$^{18}$O (2-1) emission is 0.018M$_\odot$ as…

One of the most fundamental topics of exobiology concerns the identification of stars with environments consistent with life. Although it is believed that most types of main-sequence stars might be able to support life, particularly extremophiles, special requirements appear to be necessary for the development and sustainability of advanced life forms. From our study, orange main-sequence stars, ranging from spectral type late-G to mid-K (with a maximum at early-K), are most promising. Our analysis considers a variety of aspects, including (1) the frequency of the various types of stars, (2) t…
Debris disk stars are good targets for high contrast imaging searches for planetary systems, since debris disks have been shown to have a tentative correlation with giant planets. We selected 20 stars identified as debris disk hosts by the WSIE mission, with particularly high levels of warm dust. We observed these with the VLT/SPHERE high contrast imaging instrument with the goal of finding planets and imaging the disks in scattered light. Our survey reaches a median 5$σ$~sensitivity of 10.4Mj at 25au and 5.9Mj at 100au. We identified three new stellar companions (HD18378B, HD19257B and HD1337…
Ground- and space-based planet searches employing radial velocity techniques and transit photometry have detected thousands of planet-hosting stars in the Milky Way. The chemistry of these atmospheres is controlled by the shape and absolute flux of the stellar spectral energy distribution, however, flux distributions of relatively inactive low-mass stars are poorly known at present. To better understand exoplanets orbiting low-mass stars, we have executed a panchromatic (X-ray to mid-IR) study of the spectral energy distributions of 11 nearby planet hosting stars, the {\it Measurements of the …
New members of the TW Hydrae Association and two accreting M-dwarfs in Scorpius-Centaurus
The field of the globular cluster M22 (NGC 6656) was monitored between 2000 and 2008 in a search for variable stars. $BV$ light curves were obtained for 359 periodic, likely periodic, and long-term variables, 238 of which are new detections. Thirty nine newly detected variables, and 63 previously known ones are members or likely members of the cluster, including 20 SX Phe, 10 RRab and 16 RRc-type pulsators, one BL Her-type pulsator, 21 contact binaries, and 9 detached or semi-detached eclipsing binaries. The most interesting among the identified objects are V112 - a bright multimode SX Phe pul…
