We show that the dynamics, in particular the Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) instability, of an inviscid fluid with velocity shear admits Parity-Time (PT) symmetry, which provides a physical explanation to the well-known observation that the spectrum of the perturbation eigenmodes of the system is symmetric with respect to the real axis. It is found that the KH instability is triggered when and only when the PT symmetry is spontaneously broken. The analysis of PT symmetry also reveals that the relative phase between parallel velocity and pressure perturbations needs to be locked at $π/2$ when the instability is suppressed.
Mechanism of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability based on the Kutta-Zhoukovsky theorem is considered. The mechanism itself generates the velocity shear, thereby redistributing the flow energy which drives the instability.
The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability has been proposed as a mechanism to extract energy from magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) kink waves in flux tubes, and to drive dissipation of this wave energy through turbulence. It is therefore a potentially important process in heating the solar corona. However, it is unclear how the instability is influenced by the oscillatory shear flow associated with an MHD wave. We investigate the linear stability of a discontinuous oscillatory shear flow in the presence of a horizontal magnetic field within a Cartesian framework that captures the essential features of MHD osc…
Kelvin-Helmholtz {instability induced} turbulence is one promising mechanism by which loops in the solar corona can be heated by MHD waves. In this paper we present an analytical model of the dissipation rate of {Kelvin-Helmholtz instability induced} turbulence $\varepsilon_{\rm D}$, finding it scales as the wave amplitude ($d$) to the third power ($\varepsilon_{\rm D}\propto d^3$). Based on the concept of steady-state turbulence, we expect the turbulence heating throughout the volume of {the} loop to match the total energy injected through its footpoints. In situations where this holds, the w…
The common feature of sheared flows of an ideal fluid and plasma in magnetic field is the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. This instability is described by identical equations in mentioned two cases. The wave equation for the eigenmodes in the plasma obtained by the kinetic method in the long-wave limit coincides with the Rayleigh equation known for an ideal fluid. Velocity profile with a transition layer of finite width is considered. Odd modes are investigated. Localized velocity shear layer is the source of perturbations propagating beyond the transition layer. The conditions of localization o…
We study the stability of shear flows in a fully ionized plasma. Kelvin-Helmholtz is a well known, macroscopic and ideal shear-driven instability. In sufficiently low density plasmas, also the microscopic Hall magneto-shear instability can take place. We performed three-dimensional simulations of the Hall-MHD equations where these two instabilities are present, and carried out a comparative study. We find that when the shear flow is so intense that its vorticity surpasses the ion-cyclotron frequency of the plasma, the Hall magneto-shear instability is not only non-negligible, but it actually d…
The dynamics of singularity formation on the interface between two ideal fluids is studied for the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability development within the Hamiltonian formalism. It is shown that the equations of motion derived in the small interface angle approximation (gravity and capillary forces are neglected) admit exact solutions in the implicit form. The analysis of these solutions shows that, in the general case, weak root singularities are formed on the interface in a finite time for which the curvature becomes infinite, while the slope angles remain small. For Atwood numbers close to unit…
Emerging new technologies in plasma simulations allow tracking billions of particles while computing their radiative spectra. We present a visualization of the relativistic Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability from a simulation performed with the fully relativistic particle-in-cell code PIConGPU powered by 18,000 GPUs on the USA's fastest supercomputer Titan [1].
Prominences are incredibly dynamic across the whole range of their observable spatial scales, with observations revealing gravity-driven fluid instabilities, waves, and turbulence. With all these complex motions, it would be expected that instabilities driven by shear in the internal fluid motions would develop. However, evidence of these have been lacking. Here we present the discovery in a prominence, using observations from the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS), of a shear flow instability, the Kelvin-Helmholtz sinusoidal-mode of a fluid channel, driven by flows in the prominence…
The nonlinear evolution of two fluid interfacial structures like bubbles and spikes arising due to the combined action of Rayleigh-Taylor and Kelvin-Helmholtz instability or due to that of Richtmyer-Meshkov and Kelvin-Helmholtz instability resulting from oblique shock is investigated. Using Layzer's model analytic expressions for the asymptotic value of the combined growth rate are obtained in both cases for spikes and bubbles. However, if the overlying fluid is of lower density the interface perturbation behaves in different ways. Depending on the magnitude of the velocity shear associated wi…
The Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) instability is studied in a non-Newtonian dusty plasma with an experimentally verified model [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 98}, 145003 (2007)] of shear flow rate dependent viscosity. The shear flow profile used here is a parabolic type bounded flow. Both the shear thinning and shear thickening properties are investigated in compressible as well as incompressible limits using a linear stability analysis. Like the stabilizing effect of compressibility on the KH instability, the non-Newtonian effect in shear thickening regime could also suppress the instability but on the contr…
The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in an ionized plasma is considered with a focus on the generation of magnetic field via the Biermann battery mechanisms. The problem is studied through direct numerical simulations of two counter-directed flows in 2D geometry. The simulations demonstrate the formation of eddies and their further interaction resulting in a large single vortex. At early stages, the generated magnetic field evolves due to the baroclinic term in the induction equation, revealing significantly different structures from the vorticity field, despite the fact that magnetic field and vo…
In the Hall magnetohydrodynamics, the onset condition of the Kelvin Helmholtz instability is solely determined by the Hall effect and is independent of the nature of shear flows. In addition, the physical mechanism behind the super and sub Alfvenic flows becoming unstable is quite different: the high frequency right circularly polarized whistler becomes unstable in the super Alfvenic flows whereas low frequency, left circularly polarized ion-cyclotron wave becomes unstable in the presence of sub Alfvenic shear flows. The growth rate of the Kelvin Helmholtz instability in the super Alfvenic cas…
Over the last few years it became clear that turbulent magnetic reconnection and magnetized turbulence are inseparable. It was not only shown that reconnection is responsible for violating the frozen-in condition in turbulence, but also that stochastic reconnection in 3D generates turbulence by itself. The actual mechanism responsible for this driving is still unknown. Processes such tearing mode or Kelvin-Helmholtz, among other plasma instabilities, could generate turbulence from irregular current sheets. We address the nature of driving mechanism for this process and consider a relative role…
Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) instability plays a significant role in transport and mixing properties of any medium. In this paper, we numerically explore this instability for a two-dimensional strongly coupled dusty plasma with rotational shear flows. We study this medium using generalized hydrodynamic fluid model which treats it as viscoelastic fluid. We consider the specific cases of rotating vorticity with abrupt radial profiles of rotation. In particular: single-circulation, and multi-circulation vorticity shell profiles have been chosen. We observe the KH vortices at each circular interface betw…
Recent observations show cool, oscillating prominence threads fading when observed in cool spectral lines and appearing in warm spectral lines. A proposed mechanism to explain this evolution is that the threads were heated by turbulence driven by the Kelvin--Helmholtz instability that developed as a result of wave-driven shear flows on the surface of the thread. As the Kelvin--Helmholtz instability is an instability that works to mix the fluids, in the solar corona it can be expected to work by mixing the cool prominence material with that of the hot corona to form a warm boundary layer. In th…
We have investigated magnetic field generation in velocity shears via the kinetic Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (kKHI) using a relativistic plasma jet core and stationary plasma sheath. Our three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations consider plasma jet cores with Lorentz factors of 1.5, 5, and 15 for both electron-proton and electron-positron plasmas. For electron-proton plasmas we find generation of strong large-scale DC currents and magnetic fields which extend over the entire shear-surface and reach thicknesses of a few tens of electron skin depths. For electron-positron plasmas we find …
The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI) is a known mechanism for penetration of solar wind matter into the magnetosphere. Using three-dimensional, resistive magnetohydrodynamic simulations, the double mid-latitude reconnection (DMLR) process was shown to efficiently exchange solar wind matter into the magnetosphere, through mixing and reconnection. Here, we compute test particle orbits through DMLR configurations. In the instantaneous electromagnetic fields, charged particle trajectories are integrated using the guiding centre approximation. The mechanisms involved in the electron particle orbi…
The linear MHD Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI) in an anisotropic plasma concerning the direction of an external magnetic field is examined in detail. For this purpose, the MHD equations are used to describe the motion of plasma as a fluid, which is derived from 16 moments of Boltzmann-Vlasov kinetic equations for collisionless plasma. In addition, the heat flux along the magnetic field is taken into account. The growing rates of KHI are calculated as functions of the anisotropic plasma properties for a shear flow along the magnetic field at supersonic velocities. On the other hand, the quas…
The nonlinear magnetic Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHi), and the turbulence it creates, appears in many astrophysical systems. This includes those systems where the local plasma conditions are such that the plasma is not fully ionised, for example in the lower solar atmosphere and molecular clouds. In a partially ionised system, the fluids couple via collisions which occur at characteristic frequencies, therefore neutral and plasma species become decoupled for sufficiently high-frequency dynamics. Here we present high-resolution 2D two-fluid simulations of the nonlinear KHi for a system that…
Dissipation and particle acceleration in astrophysical jets with velocity and magnetic shear: Interaction of Kelvin-Helmholtz and Drift-Kink Instabilities
We present a three-dimensional study of the plasma dynamics at the flank magnetopause of the Earth's magnetosphere during mainly northward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) periods. Two-fluid simulations show that the initial magnetic shear at the magnetopause and the field line bending caused by the dynamics itself (in a configuration taken as representative of the properties of the flank magnetopause) influence both the location where the Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) instability and the induced magnetic reconnection take place and their nonlinear development. The KH vortices develop asymmetricall…
The description of the local turbulent energy transfer, and the high-resolution ion distributions measured by the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission, together provide a formidable tool to explore the cross-scale connection between the fluid-scale energy cascade and plasma processes at sub-ion scales. When the small-scale energy transfer is dominated by Alfvénic, correlated velocity and magnetic field fluctuations, beams of accelerated particles are more likely observed. Here, for the first time we report observations suggesting the nonlinear wave-particle interaction as one possible mechanism f…
We report here, for the first time, an observed instability of a Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) nature occurring in a fully three-dimensional (3D) current-vortex sheet at the fan plane of a 3D magnetic null point. The current-vortex layer forms self-consistently in response to foot point driving around the spine lines of the null. The layer first becomes unstable at an intermediate distance from the null point, with the instability being characterized by a rippling of the fan surface and a filamentation of the current density and vorticity in the shear layer. Owing to the 3D geometry of the shear layer…

Using a full kinetic, implicit particle-in-cell code, iPiC3D, we studied the properties of plasma kinetic turbulence, such as would be found at the interface between the solar wind and the Earth magnetosphere at low latitude during northwards periods. In this case, in the presence of a magnetic field B oriented mostly perpendicular to the velocity shear, turbulence is fed by the disruption of a Kelvin-Helmholtz vortex chain via secondary instabilities, vortex pairing and non-linear interactions. We found that the magnetic energy spectral cascade between ion and electron inertial scales, $d_i$ …
Collisionless plasma instabilities are fundamental in magnetic field generation in astrophysical scenarios, but their role has been addressed in scenarios where velocity shear is absent. In this work we show that velocity shears must be considered when studying realistic astrophysical scenarios, since these trigger the collisionless Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI). We present the first self-consistent three-dimensional (3D) particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations of the KHI in conditions relevant for unmagnetized relativistic outflows with velocity shear, such as active galactic nuclei (AGN) and…

Studies have shown that in sheared $\mathbf{E}\times\mathbf{B}$ flows in an inhomogeneous ionospheric plasma, the gradient drift (GDI) or the Kelvin-Helmholtz (KHI) instability may grow. This work examines the conditions that cause one of these instabilities to dominate over the other using a novel model to study localized ionospheric instabilities. The effect of collisions with neutral particles plays an important role in the instability development. It is found that the KHI is dominant in low collisionality regimes, the GDI is dominant in high collisionality regimes, and there exists an inte…

Boundary layers in space and astrophysical plasmas are the location of complex dynamics where different mechanisms coexist and compete eventually leading to plasma mixing. In this work, we present fully kinetic Particle-In-Cell simulations of different boundary layers characterized by the following main ingredients: a velocity shear, a density gradient and a magnetic gradient localized at the same position. In particular, the presence of a density gradient drives the development of the lower hybrid drift instability (LHDI), which competes with the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI) in the deve…
A two-dimensional lattice Boltzmann model with 19 discrete velocities for compressible Euler equations is proposed (D2V19-LBM). The fifth-order Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory (5th-WENO) finite difference scheme is employed to calculate the convection term of the lattice Boltzmann equation. The validity of the model is verified by comparing simulation results of the Sod shock tube with its corresponding analytical solutions. The velocity and density gradient effects on the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI) are investigated using the proposed model. Sharp density contours are obtained in …
