We construct the chiral radiation transport equation for left-handed neutrinos in the context of radiation hydrodynamics for core-collapse supernovae. Based on the chiral kinetic theory incorporating quantum corrections due to the chirality of fermions, we derive a general relativistic form of the chiral transfer equation with collisions. We show that such quantum corrections explicitly break the spherical symmetry and axisymmetry of the system. In the inertial frame, in particular, we find that the so-called side jump leads to quantum corrections in the collisions between neutrinos and matter. We also derive analytic forms of such corrections in the emission and absorption rates for the neutrino absorption process. These corrections result in the generation of kinetic helicity and cross helicity of matter, which should then modify the subsequent evolution of matter. This theoretical framework can be applied to investigate the impacts of the chirality of neutrinos on the evolution of core-collapse supernovae.
Based on the recently formulated chiral radiation transport theory for left-handed neutrinos, we study the chiral transport of neutrinos near thermal equilibrium in core-collapse supernovae. We first compute the near-equilibrium solution of the chiral radiation transport equation under the relaxation time approximation, where the relaxation time is directly derived from the effective field theory of the weak interaction. By using such a solution, we systematically derive analytic expressions for the nonequilibrium corrections of the neutrino energy-momentum tensor and neutrino number current i…
The conventional neutrino transport theory for core-collapse supernovae misses one key property of neutrinos: the left-handedness. The chirality of neutrinos modifies the hydrodynamic behavior at the macroscopic scale and leads to topological transport phenomena. We argue that such transport phenomena should play important roles in the evolution of core-collapse supernovae, and, in particular, lead to a tendency toward the inverse energy cascade from small to larger scales, which may be relevant to the origin of the supernova explosion.
Chirality of neutrinos modifies the conventional kinetic theory and hydrodynamics, leading to unusual chiral transport related to quantum anomalies in field theory. We argue that these corrections have new phenomenological consequences for hot and dense neutrino gases, especially in core-collapse supernovae. We find that the neutrino density can be converted to the fluid helicity through the chiral vortical effect. This fluid helicity effectively acts as a chiral chemical potential for electrons via the momentum exchange with neutrinos and induces a "helical plasma instability" that generates …
We show that the backreaction of left-handed neutrinos out of equilibrium on the matter sector induces an electric current proportional to a magnetic field even without a chiral imbalance for electrons in core-collapse supernovae. We derive the transport coefficient of this effect based on the recently formulated chiral radiation transport theory for neutrinos. This chiral electric current generates a strong magnetic field via the so-called chiral plasma instability, which could provide a new mechanism for the strong and stable magnetic field of magnetars. We also numerically study the physica…
We show that, because of their effective electromagnetic interaction in matter, transition radiation is emitted whenever neutrinos goes across the boundary between two media with different indices of refraction. This effect occurs in the context of the standard model and does not depend on any exotic neutrino property. We examine such a phenomena and compare it with the transition radiation of a neutrino endowed with an intrinsic dipole moment.
We revisit the rates of neutrino pair emission and absorption from nucleon-nucleon bremsstrahlung in supernova matter using the $T$-matrix formalism in the long-wavelength limit. Based on two-body potentials of chiral effective field theory ($χ$EFT), we solve the Lippmann-Schwinger equation for the $T$-matrix including non-diagonal contributions. We consider final-state Pauli blocking and hence our calculations are valid for nucleons with an arbitrary degree of degeneracy. We also explore the in-medium effects on the $T$-matrix and find that they are relatively small for supernova matter. We c…
We discuss the transition radiation process $ν\to νγ$ at an interface of two media. The medium fulfills the dual purpose of inducing an effective neutrino-photon vertex and of modifying the photon dispersion relation. The transition radiation occurs when at least one of those quantities have different values in different media. We present a result for the probability of the transition radiation which is both accurate and analytic. For $E_ν=1$MeV neutrino crossing polyethylene-vacuum interface the transition radiation probability is about $10^{-39}$ and the energy intensity (deposition) is abou…
Coherent radiation at radio frequencies from high-energy showers fully contained in a dense radio-transparent medium - like ice, salt or regolith - has been extensively investigated as a promising technique to search for ultra-high energy (UHE) neutrinos. Additional emission in the form of transition radiation may occur when a neutrino-induced shower produced close to the Earth surface emerges from the ground into atmospheric air. We present the first detailed evaluation of transition radiation from high-energy showers crossing the boundary between two different media. We found that transition…
The angular, spectral and temporal features of the highest energy protons and accompanying them secondary neutrinos and synchrotron gamma-rays propagating through the intergalactic magnetic and radiation fields are studied using the analytical solutions of the Boltzmann transport equation obtained in the limit of the small-angle and continuous-energy-loss approximation.
The radio approach for detecting the ultra-high energy cosmic neutrinos has become a mature field. The Cherenkov pulse in radio detection originates from the charge excess of particle showers due to Askaryan effect. The conventional way of calculating the Cherenkov pulse by making far- field approximation fails when the size of elongated showers become comparable with detection distance. We investigate the Cherenkov pulse in near-field by a numerical code based on the finite- difference time-domain (FDTD) method. Our study shows that the near-field radiation exhibits very different behaviors f…
We estimate the gravitational radiation signature of the electron/positron annihilation-driven neutrino burst accompanying the asymmetric collapse of an initially hydrostatic, radiation-dominated supermassive object suffering the Feynman-Chandrasekhar instability. An object with a mass $5\times10^4\,M_\odot<M<5\times10^5\,M_\odot$, with primordial metallicity, is an optimal case with respect to the fraction of its rest mass emitted in neutrinos as it collapses to a black hole: lower initial mass objects will be subject to scattering-induced neutrino trapping and consequently lower efficiency i…
We present a new multi-dimensional radiation-hydrodynamics code for massive stellar core-collapse in full general relativity (GR). Employing an M1 analytical closure scheme, we solve spectral neutrino transport of the radiation energy and momentum based on a truncated moment formalism. Regarding neutrino opacities, we take into account a baseline set in state-of-the-art simulations, in which inelastic neutrinoelectron scattering, thermal neutrino production via pair annihilation and nucleonnucleon bremsstrahlung are included. While the Einstein field equations and the spatial advection terms i…
Cosmogenic neutrinos are expected from ultrahigh energy cosmic rays undergoing the GZK process and anticipated to be observed by detecting air showers from the decays of tau leptons. We use CORSIKA simulated shower structure to calculate the coherent geosynchrotron radio emissions of the tau decay showers above $10^{17}$eV. We present the pattern and spectrum of radio waves and discuss their detections by radio antennae.
Massive stars end their life in an explosion event with kinetic energies of the order 1 Bethe. Immediately after the explosion has been launched, a region of low density and high entropy forms behind the ejecta which is continuously subject to neutrino heating. The neutrinos emitted from the remnant at the center, the protoneutron star (PNS), heat the material above the PNS surface. This heat is partly converted into kinetic energy and the material accelerates to an outflow that is known as the neutrino driven wind. For the first time, we simulate the collapse, bounce, explosion and the neutri…
We performed general relativistic, long-term, axisymmetric neutrino radiation hydrodynamics simulations for the remnant formed after the binary neutron star merger, which consist of a massive neutron star and a torus surrounding it. As an initial condition, we employ the result derived in a three-dimensional, numerical relativity simulation for the binary neutron star merger. We investigate the properties of neutrino-driven ejecta. Due to the pair-annihilation heating, the dynamics of the neutrino-driven ejecta is significantly modified. The kinetic energy of the ejecta is about two times larg…
We investigate whether transition radiation from a particle shower crossing the interface between Earth and air and induced by an Earth-skimming neutrino can explain the upward event announced recently by the ANITA Collaboration. While the properties of the observed signal can in principle be explained with transition radiation, the flux necessary for a successful explanation is in tension with the current best limits from the Pierre Auger Observatory, the IceCube neutrino detector and the ANITA balloon. We also show that in this scenario, the direction of the incoming neutrino is determined p…
We report on a set of long-term general-relativistic three-dimensional (3D) multi-group (energy-dependent) neutrino-radiation hydrodynamics simulations of core-collapse supernovae. We employ a full 3D two-moment scheme with the local M1 closure, three neutrino species, and 12 energy groups per species. With this, we follow the post-core-bounce evolution of the core of a nonrotating $27$-$M_\odot$ progenitor in full unconstrained 3D and in octant symmetry for $\gtrsim$$ 380\,\mathrm{ms}$. We find the development of an asymmetric runaway explosion in our unconstrained simulation. We test the res…
With the Boltzmann-radiation-hydrodynamics code, which we have developed to solve numerically the Boltzmann equations for neutrino transfer, the Newtonian hydrodynamics equations, and the Newtonian self-gravity simultaneously and consistently, we simulate the collapse of a rotating core of the progenitor with a zero-age-main-sequence mass of $11.2\,M_\odot$ and a shelluler rotation of $1\,{\rm rad\,s^{-1}}$ at the center. We pay particular attention in this paper to the neutrino distribution in phase space, which is affected by the rotation. By solving the Boltzmann equations directly, we can …
In this work, we investigate the 2014-2015 neutrino flare associated with the blazar TXS 0506+056 and a recently discovered muon neutrino event IceCube-200107A in spatial coincidence with the blazar 4FGL J0955.1+3551, under the framework of a two-zone radiation model of blazars where an inner/outer blob close to/far from the supermassive black hole are invoked. An interesting feature that the two sources share in common is that no evidence of GeV gamma-ray activity is found during the neutrino detection period, probably implying a large opacity for GeV gamma rays in the neutrino production reg…
