In this paper we extend the refined second-order Poincaré inequality for Poisson functionals from a one-dimensional to a multi-dimensional setting. Its proof is based on a multivariate version of the Malliavin-Stein method for normal approximation on Poisson spaces. We also present an application to partial sums of vector-valued functionals of heavy-tailed moving averages. The extension allows a functional with multivariate arguments, i.e. multiple moving averages and also multivariate values of the functional. Such a set-up has previously not been explored in the framework of stable moving average processes. It can potentially capture probabilistic properties which cannot be described solely by the one-dimensional marginals, but instead require the joint distribution.
For moving average processes with random coefficients and heavy-tailed innovations that are weakly dependent in the sense of strong mixing and local dependence condition $D'$ we study joint functional convergence of partial sums and maxima. Under the assumption that all partial sums of the series of coefficients are a.s. bounded between zero and the sum of the series we derive a functional limit theorem in the space of $\mathbb{R}^{2}$-valued càdlàg functions on $[0, 1]$ with the Skorokhod weak $M_{2}$ topology.
Recently a functional limit theorem for sums of moving averages with random coefficients and i.i.d. heavy tailed innovations has been obtained under the assumption that all partial sums of the series of coefficients are a.s. bounded between zero and the sum of the series. The convergence takes place in the space $D[0,1]$ of càdlàg functions with the Skorohod $M_{2}$ topology. In this article we extend this result to the case when the innovations are weakly dependent in the sense of strong mixing and local dependence condition $D'$.
We look at joint regular variation properties of MA($\infty$) processes of the form $\mathbf{X} = (X_k, k \in \mathbb{Z})$ where $X_k = \sum_{j=0}^{\infty} ψ_j Z_{k-j}$ and the sequence of random variables $(Z_i, i \in \mathbb{Z})$ are i.i.d. with regularly varying tails. We use the setup of $\mathbb{M}_{\mathbb{O}}$-convergence and obtain hidden regular variation properties for $\mathbf{X}$ under suitable summability conditions on the constant coefficients $(ψ_j : j \geq 0)$. Our approach emphasizes continuity properties of mappings and produces regular variation in sequence space.
In this paper we obtain Berry-Esseén bounds on partial sums of functionals of heavy-tailed moving averages, including the linear fractional stable noise, stable fractional ARIMA processes and stable Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes. Our rates are obtained for the Wasserstein and Kolmogorov distances, and depend strongly on the interplay between the memory of the process, which is controlled by a parameter $α$, and its tail-index, which is controlled by a parameter $β$. In fact, we obtain the classical $\sqrt{1/ n}$ rate of convergence when the tails are not too heavy and the memory is not too stro…
We investigate how large deviations events cluster in the framework of an infinite moving average process with light-tailed noise and long memory. The long memory makes clusters larger, and the asymptotic behaviour of the size of the cluster turns out to be described by the first hitting time of a randomly shifted fractional Brownian motion with drift.
We study functional convergence of sums of moving averages with random coefficients and heavy-tailed innovations. Under some standard moment conditions and the assumption that all partial sums of the series of coefficients are a.s. bounded between zero and the sum of the series we obtain functional convergence of the corresponding partial sum stochastic process in the space $D[0,1]$ of càdlàg functions with the Skorohod $M_{2}$ topology.
In the proof of the invariance principle for locally perturbed periodic Lorentz process with finite horizon, a lot of delicate results were needed concerning the recurrence properties of its unperturbed version. These were analogous to the similar properties of Simple Symmetric Random Walk. However, in the case of Lorentz process with infinite horizon, the analogous results for the corresponding random walk are not known, either. In this paper, these properties are ascertained for the appropriate random walk (this happens to be in the non normal domain of attraction of the normal law). As a to…
One-rank perturbations of Wigner matrices have been closely studied: let $P=\frac{1}{\sqrt{n}}A+θvv^T$ with $A=(a_{ij})_{1 \leq i,j \leq n} \in \mathbb{R}^{n \times n}$ symmetric, $(a_{ij})_{1 \leq i \leq j \leq n}$ i.i.d. with centered standard normal distributions, and $θ>0, v \in \mathbb{S}^{n-1}.$ It is well known $λ_1(P),$ the largest eigenvalue of $P,$ has a phase transition at $θ_0=1:$ when $θ\leq 1,$ $λ_1(P) \xrightarrow[]{a.s.} 2,$ whereas for $θ> 1,$ $λ_1(P) \xrightarrow[]{a.s.} θ+θ^{-1}.$ Under more general conditions, the limiting behavior of $λ_1(P),$ appropriately normalized, has…
Consider an n x n Hermitian random matrix with, above the diagonal, independent entries with alpha-stable symmetric distribution and 0 < alpha < 2. We establish new bounds on the rate of convergence of the empirical spectral distribution of this random matrix as n goes to infinity. When 1 < alpha < 2 we give vanishing bounds on the Lp-norm of the eigenvectors normalized to have unit L2-norm goes to 0. On the contrary, when 0 < alpha < 2/3, we prove that these eigenvectors are localized.
We study the joint limit behavior of sums, maxima and $\ell^p$-type moduli for samples taken from an $\mathbb{R}^d$-valued regularly varying stationary sequence with infinite variance. As a consequence, we can determine the distributional limits for ratios of sums and maxima, studentized sums, and other self-normalized quantities in terms of hybrid characteristic functions and Laplace transforms. These transforms enable one to calculate moments of the limits and to characterize the differences between the iid and stationary cases in terms of indices which describe effects of extremal clusterin…
In this paper a method based on a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm is proposed to compute the probability of a rare event. The conditional distribution of the underlying process given that the rare event occurs has the probability of the rare event as its normalizing constant. Using the MCMC methodology a Markov chain is simulated, with that conditional distribution as its invariant distribution, and information about the normalizing constant is extracted from its trajectory. The algorithm is described in full generality and applied to the problem of computing the probability that a h…
Consider a heavy-tailed branching process (denoted by $Z_{n}$) in random environments, under the condition which infers that $\mathbb{E}\log m(ξ_{0})=\infty$. We show that (1) there exists no proper $c_{n}$ such that $\{Z_{n}/c_{n}\}$ has a proper, non-degenerate limit, (2) normalized by a sequence of functions, a proper limit can be obtained, i.e., $y_{n}\left(\barξ,Z_{n}(\barξ)\right)$ converges almost surely to a random variable $Y(\barξ)$, where $Y\in(0,1)~η$-a.s., (3) finally, we give a necessary and sufficient conditions for the almost sure convergence of $\left\{\frac{U(\barξ,Z_{n}(\bar…
We show central limit theorems (CLT) for the Stieltjes transforms or more general analytic functions of symmetric matrices with independent heavy tailed entries, including entries in the domain of attraction of $α$-stable laws and entries with moments exploding with the dimension, as in the adjacency matrices of Erdös-Rényi graphs. For the second model, we also prove a central limit theorem of the moments of its empirical eigenvalues distribution. The limit laws are Gaussian, but unlike to the case of standard Wigner matrices, the normalization is the one of the classical CLT for independent r…
We investigate temporal behavior of probability density functions (pdfs) of paradigmatic jump-type and continuous processes that, under confining regimes, share common heavy-tailed asymptotic (target) pdfs. Namely, we have shown that under suitable confinement conditions, the ordinary Fokker-Planck equation may generate non-Gaussian heavy-tailed pdfs (like e.g. Cauchy or more general Lévy stable distribution) in its long time asymptotics. For diffusion-type processes, our main focus is on their transient regimes and specifically the crossover features, when initially infinite number of the pdf…
The choice of the increment distribution is crucial for the random-walk Metropolis-Hastings (RWM) algorithm. In this paper we study the optimal choice in high-dimension setting among all possible increment distributions. The conclusion is rather counter intuitive, but the optimal rate of convergence is attained by the usual choice, the normal distribution as the increment distribution. In particular, no heavy-tailed increment distribution can improve the rate.
We consider the FCFS G/G/n queue in the Halfin-Whitt regime, in the presence of heavy-tailed distributions (i.e. infinite variance). We prove that under minimal assumptions, i.e. only that processing times have finite 1 + epsilon moment and inter-arrival times have finite second moment, the sequence of stationary queue length distributions, normalized by $n^{\frac{1}{2}}$, is tight. All previous tightness results for the stationary queue length required that processing times have finite 2 + epsilon moment. Furthermore, we develop simple and explicit bounds on the stationary queue length in tha…
Consider a branching system with particles moving according to an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process with drift $μ>0$ and branching according to a law in the domain of attraction of the $(1+β)$-stable distribution. The mean of the branching law is strictly larger than $1$ implying that the system is supercritical and the total number of particles grows exponentially at some rate $λ>0$. It is known that the system obeys a law of large numbers. In the paper we study its rate of convergence. We discover an interesting interplay between the branching rate $λ$ and the drift parameter $μ$. There are three r…
We investigate long and short memory in $α$-stable moving averages and max-stable processes with $α$-Fréchet marginal distributions. As these processes are heavy-tailed, we rely on the notion of long range dependence suggested by Kulik and Spodarev (2019) based on the covariance of excursions. Sufficient conditions for the long and short range dependence of $α$-stable moving averages are proven in terms of integrability of the corresponding kernel functions. For max-stable processes, the extremal coefficient function is used to state a necessary and sufficient condition for long range dependen…
We consider a strictly stationary random field on the two-dimensional integer lattice with regularly varying marginal and finite-dimensional distributions. Exploiting the regular variation, we define the spatial extremogram which takes into account only the largest values in the random field. This extremogram is a spatial autocovariance function. We define the corresponding extremal spectral density and its estimator, the extremal periodogram. Based on the extremal periodogram, we consider the Whittle estimator for suitable classes of parametric random fields including the Brown-Resnick random…
We establish a new class of functional central limit theorems for partial sum of certain symmetric stationary infinitely divisible processes with regularly varying Lévy measures. The limit process is a new class of symmetric stable self-similar processes with stationary increments that coincides on a part of its parameter space with a previously described process. The normalizing sequence and the limiting process are determined by the ergodic-theoretical properties of the flow underlying the integral representation of the process. These properties can be interpreted as determining how long the…
In this article we consider Lévy driven continuous time moving average processes observed on a lattice, which are stationary time series. We show asymptotic normality of the sample mean, the sample autocovariances and the sample autocorrelations. A comparison with the classical setting of discrete moving average time series shows that in the last case a correction term should be added to the classical Bartlett formula that yields the asymptotic variance. An application to the asymptotic normality of the estimator of the Hurst exponent of fractional Lévy processes is also deduced from these res…
We consider the random reversible Markov kernel K obtained by assigning i.i.d. nonnegative weights to the edges of the complete graph over n vertices and normalizing by the corresponding row sum. The weights are assumed to be in the domain of attraction of an $α$-stable law, $α\in(0,2)$. When $1\leqα<2$, we show that for a suitable regularly varying sequence $κ_n$ of index $1-1/α$, the limiting spectral distribution $μ_α$ of $κ_nK$ coincides with the one of the random symmetric matrix of the un-normalized weights (Lévy matrix with i.i.d. entries). In contrast, when $0<α<1$, we show that the em…
We study the large-time asymptotic of renewal-reward processes with a heavy-tailed waiting time distribution. It is known that the heavy tail of the distribution produces an extremely slow dynamics, resulting in a singular large deviation function. When the singularity takes place, the bottom of the large deviation function is flattened, manifesting anomalous fluctuations of the renewal-reward processes. In this article, we aim to study how these singularities emerge as the time increases. Using a classical result on the sum of random variables with regularly varying tail, we develop an expans…
Given an arbitrary continuous probability density function, it is introduced a conjugated probability density, which is defined through the Shannon information associated with its cumulative distribution function. These new densities are computed from a number of standard distributions, including uniform, normal, exponential, Pareto, logistic, Kumaraswamy, Rayleigh, Cauchy, Weibull, and Maxwell-Boltzmann. The case of joint information-weighted probability distribution is assessed. An additive property is derived in the case of independent variables. One-sided and two-sided information-weightin…
In this paper we study the joint distributional convergence of the largest eigenvalues of the sample covariance matrix of a $p$-dimensional time series with iid entries when $p$ converges to infinity together with the sample size $n$. We consider only heavy-tailed time series in the sense that the entries satisfy some regular variation condition which ensures that their fourth moment is infinite. In this case, Soshnikov [31, 32] and Auffinger et al. [2] proved the weak convergence of the point processes of the normalized eigenvalues of the sample covariance matrix towards an inhomogeneous Pois…
We provide some asymptotic theory for the largest eigenvalues of a sample covariance matrix of a p-dimensional time series where the dimension p = p_n converges to infinity when the sample size n increases. We give a short overview of the literature on the topic both in the light- and heavy-tailed cases when the data have finite (infinite) fourth moment, respectively. Our main focus is on the heavytailed case. In this case, one has a theory for the point process of the normalized eigenvalues of the sample covariance matrix in the iid case but also when rows and columns of the data are linearly…
