Search for dijet resonances in events with an isolated charged lepton using $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector
A search for dijet resonances in events with at least one isolated charged lepton is performed using $139~{\text{fb}}^{-1}$ of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The dijet invariant-mass ($m_{jj}$) distribution constructed from events with at least one isolated electron or muon is searched in the region $0.22 < m_{jj} < 6.3$ TeV for excesses above a smoothly falling background from Standard Model processes. Triggering based on the presence of a lepton in the event reduces limitations imposed by minimum transverse momentum thresholds for triggering on jets. This approach allows smaller dijet invariant masses to be probed than in inclusive dijet searches, targeting a variety of new-physics models, for example ones in which a new state is produced in association with a leptonically decaying $W$ or $Z$ boson. No statistically significant deviation from the Standard Model background hypothesis is found. Limits on contributions from generic Gaussian signals with widths ranging from that determined by the detector resolution up to 15% of the resonance mass are obtained for dijet invariant masses ranging from 0.25 TeV to 6 TeV. Limits are set also in the context of several scenarios beyond the Standard Model, such as the Sequential Standard Model, a technicolor model, a charged Higgs boson model and a simplified Dark Matter model.
Dijet angular distributions from the first proton-proton collisions at 7 TeV have been measured with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The dataset used corresponds to a total integrated luminosity of 61 $\pm$ 7 nb$^{-1}$. Comparing the distributions with Monte Carlo based QCD predictions shows good agreement between data and QCD. The distributions are used to set limits on the existence of quark compositeness.
The latest results are presented of the search for new physics in inclusive dijet events recorded with the ATLAS detector. The search for resonances in the dijet mass spectrum is updated with 0.81 fb^-1 of 2011 data. The latest analysis of dijet angular distributions, with 36 pb^-1 of 2010 data, is also presented. In-depth information is provided about the model-independent search for resonances. Limits are provided for excited quarks, axigluons, scalar color octets, and to Gaussian signals that allow to set approximate limits in a model-independent way.
Dijet angular distributions from the first LHC pp collisions at center-of-mass energy sqrt(s) = 7 TeV have been measured with the ATLAS detector. The dataset used for this analysis represents an integrated luminosity of 3.1 pb-1. Dijet $χ$ distributions and centrality ratios have been measured up to dijet masses of 2.8 TeV, and found to be in good agreement with Standard Model predictions. Analysis of the $χ$ distributions excludes quark contact interactions with a compositeness scale $Λ$ below 3.4 TeV, at 95% confidence level, significantly exceeding previous limits.
Events containing a pair of high energy hadronic jet can provide clear signatures in the search for new physics at high energy hadron colliders. The ATLAS and CMS experiments collected the data from LHC collisions at $\sqrt{s}$= 13 TeV during 2015 and 2016, looking for evidence of new resonances or deviations from the Standard Model predictions. Althoug no hint of new physics was seen, strong limits have been set on the most interesting benchmark models, improving LHC Run1 reach.

A measurement of jet activity in the rapidity interval bounded by a dijet system is performed using pp collisions at 7 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector in 2010. The data are compared to LO predictions from PYTHIA, HERWIG++ and ALPGEN event generators. The data are also compared to NLO parton shower prediction from POWHEG, when interfaced to PYTHIA or HERWIG parton shower, and all order resummation prediction from HEJ. In most of the phase-space regions presented, the experimental uncertainty is much smaller than the spread of LO Monte Carlo event generator predictions. In general, POWHEG+PYT…

Using a data set with an integrated luminosity of 36 pb-1 dijet mass and angular distributions have been measured up to dijet masses of \sim 3.5 TeV and found to be in good agreement with Standard Model predictions. This analysis sets limits at 95% C.L. on various models for new physics: an excited quark is excluded with mass between 0.60 and 2.64 TeV, an axigluon hypothesis is excluded for axigluon masses between 0.60 …
The dijet production cross section for jets containing a $b$-hadron ($b$-jets) has been measured in proton-proton collisions with a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV, using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The data used correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.2 fb$^{-1}$. The cross section is measured for events with two identified $b$-jets with a transverse momentum $p_T > 20$ GeV and a minimum separation in the $η$-$ϕ$ plane of $ΔR = 0.4$. At least one of the jets in the event is required to have $p_T > 270$ GeV. The cross section is measured differentially as a function of dijet…
Additional jet activity in dijet events is measured using $pp$ collisions at ATLAS at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, for jets reconstructed using the anti-kt algorithm with radius parameter R=0.6. This is done using variables such as the fraction of dijet events without an additional jet in the rapidity interval bounded by the dijet subsystem and correlations between the azimuthal angles of the dijets. They are presented, both with and without a veto on additional jet activity in the rapidity interval, as a function of the mean transverse momentum of the dijets and of the rapidity interval …

A measurement of jet activity in the rapidity interval bounded by a dijet system is presented. Events are vetoed if a jet with transverse momentum greater than 20 GeV is found between the two boundary jets. The fraction of dijet events that survive the jet veto is presented for boundary jets that are separated by up to six units of rapidity and with mean transverse momentum 50 < pT(avg) < 500 GeV. The mean multiplicity of jets above the veto scale in the rapidity interval bounded by the dijet system is also presented as an alternative method for quantifying perturbative QCD emission. The data …

Jet cross sections have been measured for the first time in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV using the ATLAS detector. The measurement uses an integrated luminosity of 17 nb-1 recorded at the Large Hadron Collider. The anti-kt algorithm is used to identify jets, with two jet resolution parameters, R = 0.4 and 0.6. The dominant uncertainty comes from the jet energy scale, which is determined to within 7% for central jets above 60 GeV transverse momentum. Inclusive single-jet differential cross sections are presented as functions of jet transverse momentum and rapidit…
We present a concise review of the plans of the ATLAS and CMS collaborations to search for new physics using dijet events. The inclusive cross section as a function of jet p$_{T}$, the dijet mass distribution and the dijet ratio's CMS techniques are presented together with their potential of discovery with a focus on the integrated luminosities of 10, 100 and 1000 pb$^{-1}$. Analogously, the inclusive jet and angular distribution searches in the dijet channel from ATLAS are presented together with the potential of discovery given in terms of needed integrated luminosity.

In recent years, there has been a renewed interest on axigluons as part of a possible extension of strong interactions at high energies. In this work, we use recent ATLAS measurements of the dijet spectrum in order to set limits on the axigluon mass and coupling to quarks. We pay special attention to the methodology used to extract the resonant contribution from theoretical simulations. Finally, we present some predictions for the next LHC run at $\sqrt{s}=14$ TeV.
The inclusive and dijet production cross-sections have been measured for jets containing b-hadrons (b-jets) in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The measurements use data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 34 pb^-1. The b-jets are identified using either a lifetime-based method, where secondary decay vertices of b-hadrons in jets are reconstructed using information from the tracking detectors, or a muon-based method where the presence of a muon is used to identify semileptonic decays of b-hadrons inside jets. …
This paper describes a measurement of the flavour composition of dijet events produced in pp collisions at sqrt{s}=7 TeV using the ATLAS detector. The measurement uses the full 2010 data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 39 pb^-1. Six possible combinations of light, charm and bottom jets are identified in the dijet events, where the jet flavour is defined by the presence of bottom, charm or solely light flavour hadrons in the jet. Kinematic variables, based on the properties of displaced decay vertices and optimised for jet flavour identification, are used in a multidimensio…

Final states with a photon and a Z boson decaying into a pair of either electrons, muons, or neutrinos are analysed. Electroweak and total $pp \to Zγj j$ cross-sections are extracted in two fiducial regions with different sensitivities to electroweak production processes. Quartic couplings of vector bosons are studied in region…
A measurement of the rapidity and transverse momentum dependence of dijet azimuthal decorrelations is presented, using the quantity $R_{Δϕ}$. The quantity $R_{Δϕ}$ specifies the fraction of the inclusive dijet events in which the azimuthal opening angle of the two jets with the highest transverse momenta is less than a given value of the parameter $Δϕ_\mathrm{max}$. The quantity $R_{Δϕ}$ is measured in proton--proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$8 TeV as a function of the dijet rapidity interval, the event total scalar transverse momentum, and $Δϕ_\mathrm{max}$. The measurement uses an event sampl…
A search is presented for anomalous quartic gauge boson couplings in vector-boson scattering. The data for the analysis correspond to $20.2$ fb$^{-1}$ of $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV $pp$ collisions, and were collected in 2012 by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The search looks for the production of $WW$ or $WZ$ boson pairs accompanied by a high-mass dijet system, with one $W$ decaying leptonically, and a $W$ or $Z$ decaying hadronically. The hadronically decaying $W/Z$ is reconstructed as either two small-radius jets or one large-radius jet using jet substructure techniques. Constraint…

The electroweak $Zjj$ cross-section is extracted in a fiducial region chosen to enhance the electroweak contribution relative to the dominant Drell-Yan $Zjj$ process, which is constrained using a data-driven approach. The measured fiducial electroweak cross-section is $σ^{Zjj}_{…
A $6.8 \ {\rm nb^{-1}}$ sample of $pp$ collision data collected under low-luminosity conditions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is used to study diffractive dijet production. Events containing at least two jets with $p_\mathrm{T} > 20$ GeV are selected and analysed in terms of variables which discriminate between diffractive and non-diffractive processes. Cross sections are measured differentially in $Δη^F$, the size of the observable forward region of pseudorapidity which is devoid of hadronic activity, and in an estimator, $\tildeξ$, of the fractional…
This paper reports on a search for the electroweak diboson ($WW/WZ/ZZ$) production in association with a high-mass dijet system, using data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. The search is performed in final states in which one boson decays leptonically, and the other boson decays hadronically. The hadronically decaying $W/Z$ boson is reconstructed as either two small-radius jets or one large-radi…
The momentum-weighted sum of the charges of tracks associated to a jet is sensitive to the charge of the initiating quark or gluon. This paper presents a measurement of the distribution of momentum-weighted sums, called jet charge, in dijet events using 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ of data recorded with the ATLAS detector at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV in $pp$ collisions at the LHC. The jet charge distribution is unfolded to remove distortions from detector effects and the resulting particle-level distribution is compared with several models. The $p_T$-dependence of the jet charge distribution average and standard dev…

The electroweak component is extracted by a fit to the dijet invariant mass distribution in a fiducial region chosen to enhance the electroweak contribution over the dominant background in which the jets are produced via the strong interaction. The electroweak cross sect…
We study the model uncertainties on limits for quantum black hole production in dijet events from ATLAS. For models that assume a hard-disk cross section, the model uncertainty on the threshold mass limits is about 5%. If the trapped surface calculation is used for the cross section, the ATLAS mass threshold limits are below 2 TeV for all number of dimensions. Using the ATLAS data in the context of the Randall-Sundrum type-1 model gives a threshold mass lower limit of 2.84 TeV.
Using the ATLAS detector, observations have been made of a centrality-dependent dijet asymmetry in the collisions of lead ions at the Large Hadron Collider. In a sample of lead-lead events with a per-nucleon center of mass energy of 2.76 TeV, selected with a minimum bias trigger, jets are reconstructed in fine-grained, longitudinally-segmented electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters. The underlying event is measured and subtracted event-by-event, giving estimates of jet transverse energy above the ambient background. The transverse energies of dijets in opposite hemispheres is observed to be…
This Letter describes a search for narrowly resonant new physics using a machine-learning anomaly detection procedure that does not rely on a signal simulations for developing the analysis selection. Weakly supervised learning is used to train classifiers directly on data to enhance potential signals. The targeted topology is dijet events and the features used for machine learning are the masses of the two jets. The resulting analysis is essentially a three-dimensional search $A\rightarrow BC$, for $m_A\sim\mathcal{O}(\text{TeV})$, $m_B,m_C\sim\mathcal{O}(100\text{ GeV})$ and $B,C$ are reconst…

Invariant mass and angular distributions are compared to background predictions and no significant deviation is observed. For resonance searches, a new method for fitting the background component of the invariant mass distribution is employed. The dataset is then used to set upper limits at a 95% confidence level on a range of new physics sc…

A search is performed for localised excesses in dijet mass distributions of low-dijet-mass events produced in association with a high transverse energy photon. The search uses up to 79.8 fb$^{-1}$ of LHC proton-proton collisions collected by the ATLAS experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV during 2015-2017. Two variants are presented: one which makes no jet flavour requirements and one which requires both jets to be tagged as $b$-jets. The observed mass distributions are consistent with multi-jet processes in the Standard Model. The data are used to set upper limits on the production …
Differential cross-section measurements are presented for the electroweak production of two jets in association with a $Z$ boson. These measurements are sensitive to the vector-boson fusion production mechanism and provide a fundamental test of the gauge structure of the Standard Model. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data collected by ATLAS at $\sqrt{s}$=13 TeV and with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb$^{-1}$. The differential cross-sections are measured in the $Z\rightarrow \ell^+\ell^-$ decay channel ($\ell=e,μ$) as a function of four observables: the dijet invaria…

The distribution of the invariant mass of the two leading jets is examined for local excesses above a data-derived estimate of the smoothly falling prediction of the Standard Model. The data are also compared to a Monte Carlo simulation of Standard Model angular distributions derived from the rap…
The dijet double-differential cross section is measured as a function of the dijet invariant mass, using data taken during 2010 and during 2011 with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The measurements are sensitive to invariant masses between 70 GeV and 4.27 TeV with center-of-mass jet rapidities up to 3.5. A novel technique to correct jets for pile-up (additional proton-proton collisions) in the 2011 data is developed and subsequently used in the measurement. The data are found to be consistent with fixed-order NLO pQCD predictions provided by NLOJET++. Th…

The measurement uses an integrated luminosity of 17 nb-1 recorded at the Large Hadron Collider. The anti-kt algorithm is used to identify jets, with jet resolution parameters R=0.6. The dominant uncertainty comes from the jet energy scale, which is determined to within 7% for central jets above 60 GeV transverse momentum. Inclusive single-jet differential cross sections are presented as functions of jet transverse momentum and rapidity. Dijet cross sec…

Final states containing two electrons or two muons and two or more jets are studied, as are states with one electron or muon, missing transverse momentum and two or more jets. No statistically significant excess above the Standard Model expectation is observed. The observed and expected lower limits on the leptoquark mass at 95% confidence level extend up…
We present a measurement of dijet asymmetry and dijet azimuthal correlations in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.76$ TeV using the ATLAS detector. This measurement provides the first evidence of a strong jet quenching in relativistic heavy ion collisions at TeV energies. The jet reconstruction procedure is discussed as well as studies which have been performed to check that the observed asymmetry is not produced by detector effects and underlying event backgrounds.
This paper presents a measurement of forward-forward and forward-central dijet azimuthal angular correlations and conditional yields in proton-proton ($pp$) and proton-lead ($p$+Pb) collisions as a probe of the nuclear gluon density in regions where the fraction of the average momentum per nucleon carried by the parton entering the hard scattering is low. In these regions, gluon saturation can modify the rapidly increasing parton distribution function of the gluon. The analysis utilizes 25 pb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ data and 360 $μ\mathrm{b}^{-1}$ of $p$+Pb data, both at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV,…

Inclusive jet and dijet double-differential cross sections have been measured in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The cross sections were measured using jets clustered with the anti-kt algorithm. The measurements are performed in the jet rapidity range |y| < 4.4, covering jet transverse momenta from 20 GeV to 1.5 TeV and dijet invariant masses from 70 GeV to 5 TeV. The data are compared to expectations based on next-to-leading order QCD calculations corrected for non-perturbative effects, as well as to next-to-leading order Monte…
We summarize the analysis of high-pT jets in early pp collisions recorded with the ATLAS detector. Two searches for new physics are presented: One for dijet resonances, and one for quark contact interactions. The first search sets the most stringent current limit on the mass of a hypothetical excited quark.
A brief overview of searches for high mass resonances using a subset of data collected by the ATLAS experiment during the 2011 LHC run is presented. Various final states are explored including dilepton, diphoton, lepton with missing transverse energy, dijet, photon with a jet, top anti-top pairs, and Z boson pairs. No new resonance has been found and limits on several new physics models are set.
Azimuthal decorrelations between the two central jets with the largest transverse momenta are sensitive to the dynamics of events with multiple jets. We present a measurement of the normalized differential cross section based on the full dataset (L=36/pb) acquired by the ATLAS detector during the 2010 sqrt(s)=7 TeV proton-proton run of the LHC. The measured distributions include jets with transverse momenta up to 1.3 TeV, probing perturbative QCD in a high energy regime.

The top-quark mass is measured in the all-hadronic top-antitop quark decay channel using proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The data set used in the analysis corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 20.2 fb$^{-1}$. The large multi-jet background is modelled using a data-driven method. The top-quark mass is obtained from template fits to the ratio of the three-jet to the dijet mass. The three-jet mass is obtained from the three jets assigned to the top quark decay. From these three jets the dijet…
