We report the experimental implementation of the Dicke model in the semiclassical approximation, which describes a large number of two-level atoms interacting with a single-mode electromagnetic field in a perfectly reflecting cavity. This is managed by making use of two non-linearly coupled active, synthetic LC circuits, implemented by means of analog electrical components. The simplicity and versatility of our platform allows us not only to experimentally explore the coexistence of regular and chaotic trajectories in the Dicke model but also to directly observe the so-called ground-state and excited-state ``quantum'' phase transitions. In this analysis, the trajectories in phase space, Lyapunov exponents and the recently introduced Out-of-Time-Order-Correlator (OTOC) are used to identify the different operating regimes of our electronic device. Exhaustive numerical simulations are performed to show the quantitative and qualitative agreement between theory and experiment.
We report the first experimental generation and characterization of a six-photon Dicke state. The produced state shows a fidelity of F=0.56+/-0.02 with respect to an ideal Dicke state and violates a witness detecting genuine six-qubit entanglement by four standard deviations. We confirm characteristic Dicke properties of our resource and demonstrate its versatility by projecting out four- and five-photon Dicke states, as well as four-photon GHZ and W states. We also show that Dicke states have interesting applications in multiparty quantum networking protocols such as open-destination teleport…
The Dicke model consisting of an ensemble of two-state atoms interacting with a single quantized mode of the electromagnetic field exhibits a zero-temperature phase transition at a critical value of the dipole coupling strength. We propose a scheme based on multilevel atoms and cavity-mediated Raman transitions to realise an effective Dicke system operating in the phase transition regime. Output light from the cavity carries signatures of the critical behavior which is analyzed for the thermodynamic limit where the number of atoms is very large.
We realize an open version of the Dicke model by coupling two hyperfine ground states using two cavity-assisted Raman transitions. The interaction due to only one of the couplings is described by the Tavis-Cummings model and we observe a normal mode splitting in the transmission around the dispersively shifted cavity. With both couplings present the dynamics are described by the Dicke model and we measure the onset of superradiant scattering into the cavity above a critical coupling strength.
A two qubit quantum gate, namely the C-Phase, has been realized by exploiting the longitudinal momentum (i.e. the optical path) degree of freedom of a single photon. The experimental setup used to engineer this quantum gate represents an advanced version of the high stability closed-loop interferometric setup adopted to generate and characterize 2-photon 4-qubit Phased Dicke states. Some experimental results, dealing with the characterization of multipartite entanglement of the Phased Dicke states are also discussed in detail.

Recently, several schemes for the experimental creation of Dicke states were described. In this paper, we show that all the $n$-qubit symmetric Dicke states with $l$ ($2\leq l\leq (n-2)$) excitations are inequivalent to the $% |GHZ>$ state or the $|W>$ state under SLOCC, that the even $n$% -qubit symmetric Dicke state with $n/2$ excitations is inequivalent to any even $n$-qubit symmetric Dicke state with $l\neq n/2$ excitations under SLOCC, and that all the $n$-qubit symmetric Dicke states with $l$ ($2\leq l\leq (n-2)$) excitations satisfy Coffman, Kundu and Wootters' generalized monogamy ineq…
We investigate Dicke subradiance of distant quantum sources in free space, i.e., the spatial emission pattern of spontaneously radiating non-interacting multi-level atoms or multi-photon sources, prepared in totally antisymmetric states. We find that the radiated intensity is marked by a strong suppression of spontaneous emission in particular directions. In resemblance to the analogous, yet inverted, superradiant emission profiles of $N$ distant two-level atoms prepared in symmetric Dicke states, we call the corresponding emission pattern $\textit{directional Dicke subradiance}$. We also show…
We present a Dicke state preparation scheme which uses global control of $N$ spin qubits: our scheme is based on the standard phase estimation algorithm, which estimates the eigenvalue of a unitary operator. The scheme prepares a Dicke state non-deterministically by collectively coupling the spins to an ancilla qubit via a $ZZ$-interaction, using $\ceil*{\log_2 N} + 1$ ancilla qubit measurements. The preparation of such Dicke states can be useful if the spins in the ensemble are used for magnetic sensing: we discuss a possible realization using an ensemble of electronic spins located at diamon…
We study the dynamical properties of the Dicke model for increasing spin length, as the system approaches the limit of a classical spin. First, we describe the emergence of collective excitations above the groundstate that converge to the coupled spin-oscillator oscillations found in the classical limit. The corresponding Green functions reveal quantum dynamical signatures close to the superradiant quantum phase transition. Second, we identify signatures of classical quasi-periodic orbits in the quantum time evolution using numerical time-propagation of the wave function. The resulting phase s…
We realize a non-degenerate two-mode Dicke model with competing interactions in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) coupled to two orthogonal polarization modes of a single optical cavity. The BEC is coupled to the cavity modes via the scalar and vectorial part of the atomic polarizability. We can independently change these couplings and determine their effect on a self-organization phase transition. Measuring the phases of the system, we characterize a crossover from a single-mode to a two-mode Dicke model. This work provides perspectives for the realization of coupled phases of spin and density…
We discuss the unitary quantum dynamics of the Dicke model (spin and oscillator coupled). A suitable quasiprobabilty representing the quantum state turns out to obey a Fokker-Planck equation, with drift terms representing the underlying classical Hamiltonian flow and diffusion terms describing quantum fluctuations. We show (by projecting the dynamics onto a co-moving Poincaré section) how the interplay of deterministic drift and quantum diffusion generates equilibration to the microcanonical density, under conditions of global classical chaos. The pertinent photon statistics reveals macroscopi…
We theoretically study the dynamical phase diagram of the Dicke model in both classical and quantum limits using large, experimentally relevant system sizes. Our analysis elucidates that the model features dynamical critical points that are distinct from previously investigated excited-state equilibrium transitions. Moreover, our numerical calculations demonstrate that mean-field features of the dynamics remain valid in the exact quantum dynamics, but we also find that in regimes where quantum effects dominate signatures of the dynamical phases and chaos can persist in purely quantum metrics s…
We show how to realize a single-photon Dicke state in a large one-dimensional array of two- level systems, and discuss how to test its quantum properties. Realization of single-photon Dicke states relies on the cooperative nature of the interaction between a field reservoir and an array of two-level-emitters. The resulting dynamics of the delocalized state can display Rabi-like oscillations when the number of two-level emitters exceeds several hundred. In this case the large array of emitters is essentially behaving like a mirror-less cavity. We outline how this might be realized using a multi…
We study the classical analog of the quantum metric tensor and its scalar curvature for two well-known quantum physics models. First, we analyze the geometry of the parameter space for the Dicke model with the aid of the classical and quantum metrics and find that, in the thermodynamic limit, they have the same divergent behavior near the quantum phase transition, as opposed to their corresponding scalar curvatures which are not divergent there. On the contrary, under resonance conditions, both scalar curvatures exhibit a divergence at the critical point. Second, we present the classical and q…
In this paper we investigate the close relationship between Dicke superradiance, originally predicted for an ensemble of two-level atoms in entangled states, and the Hanbury Brown and Twiss effect, initially established in astronomy to determine the dimensions of classical light sources like stars. By studying the state evolution of the fields produced by classical sources -- defined by a positive Glauber-Sudarshan P function -- when recording intensity correlations of higher order in a generalized Hanbury Brown and Twiss setup we find that the angular distribution of the last detected photon,…
We try to classify the spectrum of the two-qubit Dicke model by calculating two quantum information measures of its eigenstates: the Wooters concurrence and the mutual quantum information. We are able to detect four spectral sets in each parity subspace of the model: one set is regular and given by the product of a Fock state of the field times the singlet Bell state of the qubits; the rest are fairly regular and related to the triplet states of the Bell basis. The singlet states become trapping states when we couple the Dicke model to an environment of harmonic oscillators, making them candid…

We study the quantum phase transition of the Dicke model in the classical oscillator limit, where it occurs already for finite spin length. In contrast to the classical spin limit, for which spin-oscillator entanglement diverges at the transition, entanglement in the classical oscillator limit remains small. We derive the quantum phase transition with identical critical behavior in the two classical limits and explain the differences with respect to quantum fluctuations around the mean-field ground state through an effective model for the oscillator degrees of freedom. With numerical data for …
Motivated by the experimental realization of Dicke model in optical cavities, we model an optomechanical system consisting of a two level BEC with transverse pumping. We investigate the transition from normal and inverted state to the superradiant phase through a detailed study of the phase portrait of the system. The rich phase portrait generated by analytic arguments displays two types of superradiant phases, regions of coexistence and some portion determining the persistent oscillations. We study the time evolution of the system from any phase and discuss the role of mirror frequency in ach…
Spectral characterization is a fundamental step in the development of useful quantum technology platforms. Here, we study an ensemble of interacting qubits coupled to a single quantized field mode, an extended Dicke model that might be at the heart of Bose-Einstein condensate in a cavity or circuit-QED experiments for large and small ensemble sizes, respectively. We present a semi-classical and quantum analysis of the model. In the semi-classical regime, we show analytic results that reveal the existence of a third regime, in addition of the two characteristic of the standard Dicke model, char…
We have studied entanglement entropy and Husimi $Q$ distribution as a tool to explore chaos in the quantum two-photon Dicke model. With the increase of the energy of system, the linear entanglement entropy of coherent state prepared in the classical chaotic and regular regions become more distinguishable, and the correspondence relationship between the distribution of time-averaged entanglement entropy and the classical Poincaré section has been improved obviously. Moreover, Husimi $Q$ distribution for the initial states corresponded to the points in the chaotic region in the higher energy sys…
We propose a generalized Dicke model which supports a quantum tricritical point. We map out the phase diagram and investigate the critical behaviors of the model through exact low-energy effective Hamiltonian in the thermodynamic limit. As predicted by the Landau theory of phase transition, the order parameter shows non-universality at the tricritical point. Nevertheless, as a result of the separation of the classical and the quantum degrees of freedom, we find a universal relation between the excitation gap and the entanglement entropy for the entire critical line including the tricritical po…
An individual excited two level system decays to its ground state by emitting a single photon in a process known as spontaneous emission. In accordance with quantum theory the probability of detecting the emitted photon decreases exponentially with the time passed since the excitation of the two level system. In 1954 Dicke first considered the more subtle situation in which two emitters decay in close proximity to each other. He argued that the emission dynamics of a single two level system is altered by the presence of a second one, even if it is in its ground state. Here, we present a close …
We calculate the transmission spectrum of a superconducting circuit realization of the Dicke model and identify spectroscopic features that can serve as signatures of the superradiant phase. In particular, we calculate the resonance frequencies of the system as functions of the bias term, which is usually absent in studies on the Dicke model but is commonly present in superconducting qubit circuits. To avoid over-complicating the proposed circuit, we assume a fixed coupling strength. This situation precludes the possibility of observing signatures of the phase transition by varying the couplin…

Interferometry is a paradigm for most precision measurements. Using $N$ uncorrelated particles, the achievable precision for a two-mode (two-path) interferometer is bounded by the standard quantum limit (SQL), $1/\sqrt{N}$, due to the discrete (quanta) nature of individual measurements. Despite being a challenging benchmark, the two-mode SQL has been approached in a number of systems, including the LIGO and today's best atomic clocks. Employing multi-mode interferometry, the SQL becomes $1/[(M-1)\sqrt{N}]$ using M modes. Higher precision can also be achieved using entangled particles such that…
We study the focus-focus type of monodromy in an integrable version of the Dicke model. Classical orbits forming a pinched torus represent analogues of the dynamic superradiance under conditions of a closed system. Quantum signatures of monodromy appear in lattices of expectation values of various quantities in the Hamiltonian eigenstates and are related to an excited-state quantum phase transition. We demonstrate the breakdown of these structures with an increasing strength of non-integrable perturbation.
The Dicke model describes the coupling between a quantized cavity field and a large ensemble of two-level atoms. When the number of atoms tends to infinity, this model can undergo a transition to a superradiant phase, belonging to the mean-field Ising universality class. The superradiant transition was first predicted for atoms in thermal equilibrium and was recently realized with a quantum simulator made of atoms in an optical cavity, subject to both dissipation and driving. In this Progress Report, we offer an introduction to some theoretical concepts relevant to the Dicke model, reviewing t…
Dicke superradiance, i.e., the enhanced spontaneous emission of coherent radiation, is often attributed to radiation emitted by synchronized dipoles coherently oscillating in phase. At the same time, Dicke derived superradiance assuming atoms in entangled Dicke states which do not display any dipole moment. To shed light on this apparent paradox, we study the intensity distribution arising from two identical two-level atoms prepared either in an entangled Dicke state or in a separable atomic state with non-vanishing dipole moment. We find that the two configurations produce similar far field i…
This paper is concerned with quantum dynamics of a system coupled to a critical reservoir. In this context, we employ the Dicke model which is known to exhibit a super radiant quantum phase transition (QPT) and we allow one of the mirrors to move under a linear restoring force. The electromagnetic field couples to the movable mirror though radiation pressure just like in typical optomechanical setups. We show that, in the thermodynamical limit, the super-radiant phase induces a classical driving force on the mirror without causing decoherence.
We consider a trapped two-component atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), where each atom with three energy-levels is coupled to an optical cavity field and an external classical optical field as well as a microwave field to form the so-called $Δ$-type configuration. After adiabatically eliminating the atomic excited state, an extended JC-Dicke model is derived under the rotating-wave approximation. The scaled ground-state energy and the phase diagram of this model Hamiltonian are investigated in the framework of mean-field approach. A new phase transition is revealed when the amplitude of mi…
We consider the Dicke Hamiltonian, a simple quantum-optical model which exhibits a zero-temperature quantum phase transition. We present numerical results demonstrating that at this transition the system changes from being quasi-integrable to quantum chaotic. By deriving an exact solution in the thermodynamic limit we relate this phenomenon to a localisation-delocalisation transition in which a macroscopic superposition is generated. We also describe the classical analogues of this behaviour.
Based on the conditional quantum dynamics of laser-ion interaction, we propose an efficient theoretical scheme to deterministically generate quantum pure states of a single trapped cold ion without performing the Lamb-Dicke approximation. An arbitrary quantum state can be created by using a series of classical laser beams with selected frequencies, initial phases and durations. As special examples, we further show how to create or approximate several typical macroscopic quantum states, such as the phase state and (even/odd) coherent states. Unlike previous schemes operated in the Lamb-Dicke re…
Open quantum Dicke models are paradigmatic systems for the investigation of light-matter interaction in out-of-equilibrium quantum settings. Albeit being structurally simple, these models can show intriguing physics. However, obtaining exact results on their dynamical behavior is challenging, since it requires the solution of a many-body quantum system, with several interacting continuous and discrete degrees of freedom. Here, we make a step forward in this direction by proving the validity of the mean-field semi-classical equations for open multimode Dicke models, which, to the best of our kn…
We consider a collection of two level systems, such as qubits, embedded into a microwave cavity as a promising candidate for the realization of high power quantum batteries. In this perspective, the possibility to design devices where the conventional single-photon coupling is suppressed and the dominant interaction is mediated by two-photon processes is investigated, opening the way to an even further enhancement of the charging performance. By solving a Dicke model with both single- and two-photon coupling we determine the range of parameters where the latter unconventional interaction domin…

We discuss the onset of quantum chaos and thermalization in the two-mode Dicke model, which describes the dipolar interaction between an ensemble of spins and two bosonic modes. The two-mode Dicke model exhibits normal to superradiant quantum phase transition with spontaneous breaking either of a discrete or continuous symmetry. We study the behaviour of the fidelity out-of-time-order correlator derived from the Loschmidt echo signal in the quantum phases of the model and show that its exponential growth cannot be related to a classical unstable point in the general case. Moreover, we find tha…
We develop a new fermionic path-integral formalism to analyze the phase diagram of open nonequilibrium systems. The formalism is applied to analyze an ensemble of two-level atoms interacting with a single-mode optical cavity, described by the Dicke model. While this model is often used as the paradigmatic example of a phase transition in driven-dissipative systems, earlier theoretical studies were limited to the special case when the total spin of the atomic ensemble is conserved. This assumption is not justified in most experimental realizations. Our new approach allows us to analyze the prob…
Superradiance is one of the outstanding problems in quantum optics since Dicke introduced the concept of enhanced directional spontaneous emission by an ensemble of identical two-level atoms. The effect is based on correlated collective Dicke states which turn out to be highly entangled. Here we show that enhanced directional emission of spontaneous radiation can be produced also with statistically independent incoherent sources via the measurement of higher order correlation functions of the emitted radiation. Our analysis is applicable to a wide variety of quantum systems like trapped atoms,…
We analyze the relation between the entanglement and spin-squeezing parameter in the two-atom Dicke model and identify the source of the discrepancy recently reported by Banerjee and Zhou et al that one can observe entanglement without spin squeezing. Our calculations demonstrate that there are two criteria for entanglement, one associated with the two-photon coherences that create two-photon entangled states, and the other associated with populations of the collective states. We find that the spin-squeezing parameter correctly predicts entanglement in the two-atom Dicke system only if it is a…
In a view of recent proposals for the realization of anisotropic light-matter interaction in such platforms as (i) non-stationary or inductively and capacitively coupled superconducting qubits, (ii) atoms in crossed fields and (iii) semiconductor heterostructures with spin-orbital interaction, the concept of generalized Dicke model, where coupling strengths of rotating wave and counter-rotating wave terms are unequal, has attracted great interest. For this model, we study photon fluctuations in the critical region of normal-to-superradiant phase transition when both the temperatures and number…
We propose a simple scheme for implementing quantum logic gates with a string of two-level trapped cold ions outside the Lamb-Dicke limit. Two internal states of each ion are used as one computational qubit (CQ) and the collective vibration of ions acts as the information bus, i.e., bus qubit (BQ). Using the quantum dynamics for the laser-ion interaction as described by a generalized Jaynes-Cummings model, we show that quantum entanglement between any one CQ and the BQ can be coherently manipulated by applying classical laser beams. As a result, universal quantum gates, i.e. the one-qubit rota…
We propose a robust scheme for generating macroscopic superposition states of spin or motion with the aid of a single photon. Shaping the wave packet of the photon enables high-fidelity preparation of non-classical states of matter even in the presence of photon loss. Success is heralded by photodetection, enabling the scheme to be implemented with a weak coherent field. We analyze applications to preparing Schrödinger cat states of a collective atomic spin or of a mechanical oscillator coupled to an optical resonator. The method generalizes to preparing arbitrary superpositions of coherent st…
In the vicinity of ground-state phase transitions quantum correlations can display non-analytic behavior and critical scaling. This signature of emergent collective effects has been widely investigated within a broad range of equilibrium settings. However, under nonequilibrium conditions, as found in open quantum many-body systems, characterizing quantum correlations near phase transitions is challenging. Moreover, the impact of local and collective dissipative processes on quantum correlations is not broadly understood. This is, however, indispensable for the exploitation of quantum effects i…
In the context of ultracold atoms in multimode optical cavities, the appearance of a quantum-critical glass phase of atomic spins has been predicted recently. Due to the long-range nature of the cavity-mediated interactions, but also the presence of a driving laser and dissipative processes such as cavity photon loss, the quantum optical realization of glassy physics has no analog in condensed matter, and could evolve into a "cavity glass microscope" for frustrated quantum systems out-of-equilibrium. Here we develop the non-equilibrium theory of the multimode Dicke model with quenched disorder…
The impacts that the environment has on the quantum phase transition of light in the DickeBose-Hubbard model are investigated. Based on the quasibosonic approach, mean field theory and the perturbation theory, the formulation of the Hamiltonian, the eigenenergies and the superfluid order parameter are obtained analytically. Compared with the ideal cases, the order parameter of the system evolves with time as the photons naturally decay in their environment. When the system starts with the superfluid state, the dissipation makes the photons tend to localize, and a greater hopping energy of phot…
We investigate quantum phase transitions, quantum criticality, and Berry phase for the ground state of an ensemble of non-interacting two-level atoms embedded in a non-linear optical medium, coupled to a single-mode quantized electromagnetic field. The optical medium is pumped externally through a classical electric field, so that there is a degenerate parametric amplification effect, which strongly modifies the field dynamics without affecting the atomic sector. Through a semiclassical description the different phases of this extended Dicke model are described. The quantum phase transition is…
We propose a realization of two remarkable effects of Dicke physics in quantum simulation of light-matter many-body interactions with artificial quantum systems. These effects are a superradiant decay of an ensemble of qubits and the opposite radiation trapping effect. We show that both phenomena coexist in the crossover regime of a "moderately bad" single-mode cavity coupled to the qubit subsystem. Depending on the type of the initial state and on the presence of multipartite entanglement in it, the dynamical features can be opposite resulting either in the superradiance or in the radiation t…
We investigate non-equilibrium phase transitions for driven atomic ensembles, interacting with a cavity mode, coupled to a Markovian dissipative bath. In the thermodynamic limit and at low-frequencies, we show that the distribution function of the photonic mode is thermal, with an effective temperature set by the atom-photon interaction strength. This behavior characterizes the static and dynamic critical exponents of the associated superradiance transition. Motivated by these considerations, we develop a general Keldysh path integral approach, that allows us to study physically relevant nonli…
We study dynamical phase transitions (DPT) in the driven and damped Dicke model, realizable for example by a driven atomic ensemble collectively coupled to a damped cavity mode. These DPTs are characterized by non-analyticities of certain observables, primarily the overlap of time evolved and initial state. Even though the dynamics is dissipative, this phenomenon occurs for a wide range of parameters and no fine-tuning is required. Focusing on the state of the 'atoms' in the limit of a bad cavity, we are able to asymptotically evaluate an exact path integral representation of the relevant over…
Two systems whose correlations cannot be classically accounted for display the simplest instance of quantum entanglement. Although this two-party association has caused a revolution in the foundations and uses of quantum mechanics, genuine entanglement among several parties unveils a whole new class of phenomena and applications. In this work we suggest a way to prepare Dicke states from a tunable source of bipartite entanglement to investigate foundational issues. The scheme has the following distinctive features: (i) it relies on controlled information loss and {\it unentangled} measurements…
The non-integrable Dicke model and its integrable approximation, the Tavis-Cummings (TC) model, are studied as functions of both the coupling constant and the excitation energy. The present contribution extends the analysis presented in the previous paper by focusing on the statistical properties of the quantum fluctuations in the energy spectrum and their relation with the excited state quantum phase transitions (ESQPT). These properties are compared with the dynamics observed in the semi-classical versions of the models. The presence of chaos for different energies and coupling constants is …
