Transition of gravitational waves, produced in the process of coalescence of black hole binaries, into electromagnetic radiation in magnetic field is discussed. The magnetic field is assumed to be created by rotating electrically charged black holes. The process of electric charging of black holes due to different mobilities of protons and electrons in the surrounding plasma is described.
We report on critical phenomena in the gravitational collapse of electromagnetic waves. Generalizing earlier results that focused on dipole electromagnetic waves, we here compare with quadrupole waves in axisymmetry. We perform numerical simulations of dipole and quadrupole wave initial data, fine-tuning both sets of data to the onset of black hole formation in order to study the critical solution and related critical phenomena. We observe that different multipole moments have different symmetries, indicating that the critical solution for electromagnetic waves cannot be unique, at least not g…
One might expect far away from physical black holes that quantum field quantisation performed in Minkowski space is a good approximation. Indeed, all experimental tests in particle colliders reveal no deviations so far. Nevertheless, the black holes should leave certain imprints of their presence in quantum processes. In this paper, we shall discuss several local imprints of small, primordial evaporating black holes in quantum electrodynamics in the weak gravity regime. Physically this can be interpreted as being macroscopic manifestations of vacuum fluctuations.
We discuss the Gupta-Bleuler quantization of the free electromagnetic field outside static black holes in the Boulware vacuum. We use a gauge which reduces to the Feynman gauge in Minkowski spacetime. We also discuss its relation with gauges used previously. Then we apply the low-energy sector of this field theory to investigate some low-energy phenomena. First, we discuss the response rate of a static charge outside the Schwarzschild black hole in four dimensions. Next, motivated by string physics, we compute the absorption cross sections of low-energy plane waves for the Schwarzschild and ex…
We numerically investigate the threshold of black-hole formation in the gravitational collapse of electromagnetic waves in axisymmetry. We find approximate power-law scaling $ρ_{\rm max}\sim (η_*-η)^{-2γ}$ of the maximum density in the time evolution of near-subcritical data with $γ\simeq 0.145$, where $η$ is the amplitude of the initial data. We directly observe approximate discrete self-similarity in near-critical time evolutions with a log-scale echoing period of $Δ\simeq 0.55$. The critical solution is approximately the same for two families of initial data, providing some evidence of univ…
The exact analytic solutions of the Maxwell equations in the exterior of a boosted rotating black hole immersed in an external magnetic field are obtained. The effect of boost as well as electromagnetic field on charged particle motion and energy extraction process -- magnetic Penrose process around black hole is studied. It justifies however the well known statement that magnetic field greatly increases efficiency of energy extraction which is further boosted by the boost velocity.
We consider the late-time evolution of {\it gravitational} and electromagnetic perturbations in realistic {\it rotating} Kerr spacetimes. We give a detailed analysis of the mode-coupling phenomena in rotating gravitational collapse. A consequence of this phenomena is that the late-time tail is dominated by modes which, in general, may have an angular distribution different from the original one. In addition, we show that different types of fields have {\it different} decaying rates. This result turns over the traditional belief (which has been widely accepted during the last three decades) tha…
The work on black holes immersed in external stationary magnetic fields is reviewed in both test-field approximation and within exact solutions. In particular we pay attention to the effect of the expulsion of the flux of external fields across charged and rotating black holes which are approaching extremal states. Recently this effect has been shown to occur for black hole solutions in string theory and Kaluza-Klein theory.
We study electromagnetic perturbations around a Kerr black hole surrounded by a thin disk on the equatorial plane. Our main purpose is to reveal the black hole superradiance of electromagnetic waves emitted from the disk surface. The outgoing Kerr-Schild field is used to describe the disk emission, and the superradiant scattering is represented by a vacuum wave field which is added to satisfy the ingoing condition on the horizon. The formula to calculate the energy flux on the disk surface is presented, and the energy transport in the disk-black hole system is investigated. Within the low-freq…
We perform a study to describe motion of charged particles under the influence of electromagnetic and gravitational fields of a slowly rotating wormhole with nonvanishing magnetic moment. We present analytic expression for potentials of electromagnetic field for an axially symmetric slowly rotating magnetized wormholes. While addressing important issues regarding the subject, we compare our results of motion around black holes and wormholes in terms of the ratio of radii of event horizons of a black hole and of the throat of a wormhole. It is shown that both radial and circular motions of test…
The geometry around a rotating massive body, which carries charge and electrical currents, could be described by its multipole moments (mass moments, mass-current moments, electric moments, and magnetic moments). When a small body is orbiting this massive body, it will move on geodesics, at least for a time interval that is short with respect to the characteristic time of the binary due to gravitational radiation. By monitoring the waves emitted by the small body we are actually tracing the geometry of the central object, and hence, in principle, we can infer all its multipole moments. This pa…
The evolution of electromagnetic and Dirac perturbations in the spacetime geometry of Kehagias-Sfetsos(KS) black hole in the deformed Horava-Lifshitz(HL) gravity is investigated and the associated quasinormal modes are evaluated using time domain integration and WKB methods. We find a considerable deviation in the nature of field evolution in HL theory from that in the Schwarzschild spacetime and QNMs region extends over a longer time in HL theory before the power-law tail decay begins. The dependence of the field evolution on the HL parameter $α$ are studied. In the time domain picture we fin…
We study the propagation of classical electromagnetic waves on the simplest four-dimensional spherically symmetric metric with a dilaton background field. Solutions to the relevant equations are obtained perturbatively in a parameter which measures the strength of the dilaton field (hence parameterizes the departure from Schwarzschild geometry). The loss of energy from outgoing modes is estimated as a back-scattering process against the dilaton background, which would affect the luminosity of stars with a dilaton field. The radiation emitted by a freely falling point-like source on such a back…
Frame dragging (Lense-Thirring effect) is generally associated with rotating astrophysical objects. However, it can also be generated by electromagnetic fields if electric and magnetic fields are simultaneously present. In most models of astrophysical objects, macroscopic charge neutrality is assumed and the entire electromagnetic field is characterized in terms of a magnetic dipole component. Hence, the purely electromagnetic contribution to the frame dragging vanishes. However, strange stars may posses independent electric dipole and neutron stars independent electric quadrupole moments that…
The quasinormal spectrum of a charged scalar field around a non-extremal Reissner-Nordström black hole, specially in the limit of large electromagnetic interaction, has been comprehensively studied only very recently. In this work, we extend the analysis to Dirac fields using the continued fraction method and compare the results with the scalar case. In particular, we study the behaviour of the fundamental quasinormal mode as a function of the black hole's charge and of the electromagnetic interaction parameter. We derive an analytical formula for the quasinormal frequencies in the limit of la…
We study the quasinormal mode of the perturbation of the scalar field interacting with the electromagnetic field in the backgrounds of Schwarzschild AdS black hole, the Reissner-Nordstrom AdS black hole and the Born-Infeld AdS black hole. We disclose influence by the electric charge $Q$, the coupling between the scalar and electromagnetic field $q$ and the Born-Infeld parameter $b$ on the quasinormal frequencies of the scalar perturbation. We observe the possible growing mode in the perturbation when the scalar field strongly couples to the electromagnetic field. When the electromagnetic field…
The duality found by Aharonov and Casher for topological phases in the electromagnetic field is generalized to an arbitrary linear interaction. This provides a heuristic principle for obtaining a new solution of the field equations from a known solution. This is applied to the general relativistic Sagnac phase shift due to the gravitational field in the interference of mass or energy around a line source that has angular momentum and the dual phase shift in the interference of a spin around a line mass. These topological phases are treated both in the linearized limit of general relativity and…
Pulsars are thought to be highly magnetized rotating neutron stars accelerating charged particles along magnetic field lines in their magnetosphere and visible as pulsed emission from the radio wavelength up to high energy X-rays and gamma-rays. Being highly compact objects with compactness close to $Ξ= R_s/R\approx0.5$, where $\Rs=2\,G\,M/c^2$ is the Schwarzschild radius and $\{M,R\}$ the mass and radius of the neutron star, general-relativistic effects become important close to their surface. This is especially true for the polar caps where radio emission is supposed to emanate from, leading…
We consider the equation of motion of a charged particle or a charged compact object in curved space-time, under the reaction of electromagnetic radiation and also consider a physical situation such that the charged particle or compact object emits gravitational radiation, thereby gravitational radiation reaction also acts on it. We investigate the effect of this metric perturbation i.e. the gravitational radiation on the electromagnetic self-force. We show that, besides the interaction terms derived by P. Zimmerman and E. Poisson (Phys. Rev. D 90, 084030, 2014), additional perturbative terms …
The transverse electromagnetic waves propagating in a relativistic two-fluid plasma influenced by the gravitational field of the Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter black hole has been investigated exploiting 3+1 split of spacetime. Reformulating the two-fluid equations, the set of simultaneous linear equations for the perturbations have been derived. Using a local approximation, the one-dimensional radial propagation of Alfvén and high frequency electromagnetic waves are investigated. The dispersion relation for these waves is obtained and solved numerically for the wave number.
We present analytic solutions of Maxwell equations for infinitely long cylindrical conductors with nonvanishing electric charge and currents in the external background spacetime of a line gravitomagnetic monopole. It has been shown that vertical magnetic field arising around cylindrical conducting shell carrying azimuthal current will be modified by the gravitational field of NUT source. We obtain that the purely general relativistic magnetic field which has no any Newtonian analog will be produced around charged gravitomagnetic monopole.
Recent observations of gravitational waves from binary mergers of black holes or neutron stars and the rapid development of ultra-intense lasers lead strong field physics to a frontier of new physics in the 21st century. Strong gravity phenomena are most precisely described by general relativity, and lasers that are described by another most precisely tested quantum electrodynamics (QED) can be focused into a tiny area in a short period through the chirped pulse amplification and generate extremely high intensity electromagnetic (EM) fields beyond the conventional methods. It is physically int…
We study the electromagnetic spectrum of accretion disks around neutron and strange stars in $\mathcal{R}^2$ gravity. Both static and rapidly rotating models are investigated. The results are compared with the General Relativistic results. We found difference between the results in both theories of about 50\% for the electromagnetic flux and about 20\% in the luminosity for models with equal mass and angular velocity in both theories. The observed differences are much lower for models rotating with Kelperian velocity and with equal masses.
In both flat and curved spacetimes, there are weak and strong versions of the anti-Unruh/anti-Hawking effects, in which the KMS field temperature is anti-correlated with the response of a detector and its inferred temperature. We investigate for the first time the effects on the weak and strong anti-Hawking effects for an Unruh-DeWitt detector orbiting a BTZ black hole in the co-rotating frame. We find that rotation can significantly amplify the strength of the weak anti-Hawking effect, whereas it can either amplify or reduce the strength of the strong anti-Hawking effect depending on boundary…
Motivated by the fact that the universe is dominated by dark matter and dark energy, we consider rotating black holes surrounded by perfect fluid dark matter and study the accretion process in thin disk around such black holes. Here, we are interested in how the presence of dark matter affects the properties of the electromagnetic radiation emitted from a thin accretion disk. For this purpose, we use the Novikov-Thorne model and obtain the electromagnetic spectrum of an accretion disk around a rotating black hole in perfect fluid dark matter and compare with the general relativistic case. The …
In this paper we prove the occurence of chaos for charged particles moving around a Schwarzshild black hole, perturbed by uniform electric and magnetic fields. The appearance of chaos is studied resorting to the Poincare'-Melnikov method.
The evolution of scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational fields around spherically symmetric black hole surrounded by quintessence are studied with special interest on the late-time behavior. In the ring down stage of evolution, we find in the evolution picture that the fields decay more slowly due to the presence of quintessence. As the quintessence parameter εdecreases, the decay of l=0 mode of scalar field gives up the power-law form of decay and relaxes to a constant residual field at asymptotically late times. The l>0 modes of scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational fields show a powe…
Graviatom existence conditions have been found. The graviatoms (quantum systems around mini-black-holes) satisfying these conditions contain the following charged particles: the electron, muon, tau lepton, wino, pion and kaon. Electric dipole and quadrupole and gravitational radiations are calculated for the graviatoms and compared with Hawking's mini-hole radiation.
The accretion disk is formed by particles moving in closed orbits around a compact object, whose physical properties and the electromagnetic radiation characteristics are determined by the space-time geometry around the compact object. In this paper, we study the physical properties and the optical appearance of the electromagnetic radiation emitted from a thin accretion disk around the two types of the black hole solution in Einstein-Æther theory. We investigate in detail the effects of the æther field on the energy flux, temperature distribution, and electromagnetic spectrum of the disk in t…
We develop geometric optics expansion up to the subleading order for circularly polarized electromagnetic waves on curved spacetime. This subleading order geometric optics expansion, in which the conventional eikonal function is modified by inserting a carefully chosen helicity-dependent correction, is called spin optics. We derive the propagation and polarization equations in the spin optics approximation as electromagnetic waves travel in curved spacetime. Polarization-dependent deviation of the light ray trajectory from the geodesic, describing the gravitational spin Hall effect, is observe…
The electromagnetic field correlators are evaluated around a cosmic string in background of $(D+1)$-dimensional dS spacetime assuming that the field is prepared in the Bunch-Davies vacuum state. The correlators are presented in the decomposed form where the string-induced topological parts are explicitly extracted. With this decomposition, the renormalization of the local vacuum expectation values (VEVs) in the coincidence limit is reduced to the one for dS spacetime in the absence of the cosmic string. The VEVs of the squared electric and magnetic fields, and of the vacuum energy density are …
In this paper we analyze a binary system consisting of a star and a rotating black hole. The electromagnetic radiation emitted by the star interacts with the background of the black hole and stimulates the production of dilaton waves. We then estimate the energy transferred from the electromagnetic radiation of the star to the dilaton field as a function of the frequency. The resulting picture is a testable signature of the existence of dilaton fields as predicted by string theory in an astrophysical context.
Coalescing supermassive black hole binaries are produced by the mergers of galaxies and are the most powerful sources of gravitational waves accessible to space-based gravitational observatories. Some such mergers may occur in the presence of matter and magnetic fields and hence generate an electromagnetic counterpart. In this Letter, we present the first general relativistic simulations of magnetized plasma around merging supermassive black holes using the general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic code Whisky. By considering different magnetic field strengths, going from non-magnetically domin…
We investigate transverse electromagnetic waves propagating in a plasma influenced by the gravitational field of the Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole. Applying 3+1 spacetime split we derive the relativistic two-fluid equations to take account of gravitational effects due to the event horizon and describe the set of simultaneous linear equations for the perturbations. We use a local approximation to investigate the one-dimensional radial propagation of Alfvén and high frequency electromagnetic waves. We derive the dispersion relation for these waves and solve it for the wave number $k$ numeri…
