We present an observational study of the interacting pair of dwarf galaxies, MCG+07-20-052, in the vicinity of Milky Way mass spiral galaxy NGC 2998. MCG+07-20-052 is located at a sky-projected distance of 105 kpc from NGC 2998 and the two have a relative line-of-sight velocity of 60 kms. We observed tidal tail-like extensions on both members (D1 and D2) of the interacting pair MCG+07-20-052. The interacting dwarf galaxies, D1 and D2, have B-band absolute magnitudes of $-$17.17 and $-$17.14 mag, respectively, and D2 is significantly bluer than D1. We obtained HI 21 cm line data of the NGC 2998 system using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) to get a more detailed view of the neutral hydrogen (HI) emission in the interacting dwarf galaxies and in the galaxy members of the NGC 2998 group. Evidence of a merger between the dwarf galaxies in the MCG+07-20-052 is also present in the HI kinematics and morphology where we find that the HI is mostly concentrated around D2, which also shows a higher level of star-forming activity and bluer $g-r$ color index compared to D1. In addition, we detect extended tenuous HI emission around another member galaxy, NGC 3006, located close to the MCG+07-20-052-pair at a sky-projected distance of 41 kpc. We compare here our results from the MCG+07-20-052 pair-NGC 2998 system with other known LMC-SMC-Milky Way type systems and discuss the possible origin of the dwarf-dwarf interaction.
We present a study on the dwarf lenticular galaxy MCG+08-22-082 (U141) located in the Ursa Major cluster, which is blue centered, double cored, and has a boxy appearance. Using publicly available data from the SDSS, we perform an analysis of structural and stellar population properties of the galaxy and the cores. We find that the light profile of U141 follows an exponential law. U141 has a brightness Mr = -16.01 mag, and an effective radius Re = 1.7 kpc. The boxiness parameter, a4/a, is mostly between 0 and -0.05 in the inner parts, reaching an extreme of about -0.1. Double cores are seen at …
McGaugh et al. (2016) have found, in a large sample of disc systems, a tight nonlinear relationship between the total radial accelerations $g$ and their components $g_b$ arisen from the distribution of the baryonic matter [McGaugh_2016]. Here, we investigate the existence of such relation in Dwarf Disc Spirals and Low Surface Brightness galaxies on the basis of [Karukes_2017] and [DiPaolo_2018]. We have accurate mass profiles for 36 Dwarf Disc Spirals and 72 LSB galaxies. These galaxies have accelerations that cover the McGaugh range but also reach out to one order of magnitude below the small…
Isolated dwarf galaxies, especially those situated in voids, may provide insight into primordial conditions in the Universe and the physical processes that govern star formation in undisturbed stellar systems. The metallicity of H ii regions in such galaxies is key to investigating this possibility. From the SIGRID sample of isolated dwarf galaxies, we have identified two exceptionally isolated objects, the Local Void galaxy [KK98]246 (ESO 461-G036) and another somewhat larger dwarf irregular on the edge of the Local Void, MCG-01-41-006 (HIPASS J1609- 04). We report our measurements of the neb…
We studied the nearby edge-on galaxy NGC4656 and its dwarf low surface brightness companion with the enhanced UV brightness, NGC4656UV, belonging to the interacting system NGC4631/56. Regular photometric structure and relatively big size of NGC4656UV allows to consider this dwarf galaxy as a separate group member rather than a tidal dwarf. Spectral long-slit observations were used to obtain the kinematical parameters and gas-phase metallicity of NGC4656UV and NGC4656. Our rough estimate of the total dynamical mass of NGC4656UV allowed us to conclude that this galaxy is the dark-matter dominate…
We present resolved HI synthesis maps from the Very Large Array (VLA) of three interacting dwarf systems: the NGC 3664 dwarf pair, the NGC 3264 dwarf pair, and the UGC 4638 dwarf triplet. All three dwarf systems are captured at various stages of interaction and span a range of environments. We detect clear hallmarks of tidal interactions through the presence of HI bridges, and diffuse HI extensions that surround the dwarfs. We overlay the HI data on Pan-STARRS r-band images and find further evidence of tidal interactions through coincident distorted HI and tidal stellar features in NGC 3264 an…

We study a gas rich merging dwarf system KUG 0200-096. Deep optical image reveals an optically faint tail with a length of 20 kpc, giving a visual impression of tidal antenna similar to NGC 4038/39. The interacting dwarf galaxies have B-band absolute magnitudes -18.06 and -16.63 mag. We identify a young stellar clump of stellar mass of 2$\times$10$^{7}$ M$_{\sun}$ at the tip of the antenna, possibly a Tidal Dwarf Galaxy (TDG). The putative TDG candidate is quite blue with $g-r$ color index of -0.07 mag, whereas the interacting dwarf galaxies have $g-r$ color indices 0.29 and 0.19 mag. The TDG …
We show that Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations of dwarf galaxies interacting with a Milky Way-like disk produce moving groups in the simulated stellar disk. We analyze three different simulations: one that includes dwarf galaxies that mimic the Large Magellanic Cloud, Small Magellanic Cloud and the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal; another with a dwarf galaxy that orbits nearly in the plane of the Milky Way disk; and a null case that does not include a dwarf galaxy interaction. We present a new algorithm to find large moving groups in the $V_R, V_ϕ$ plane in an automated fashion th…
We present surface photometry and stellar kinematics of IC 3167, a dwarf galaxy hosting a lopsided weak bar and infalling into the Virgo cluster. We measured the bar radius and strength from broad-band imaging and bar pattern speed by applying the Tremaine-Weinberg method to stellar-absorption integral-field spectroscopy. We derived the ratio of the corotation radius to bar radius (R = 1.7 + 0.5 - 0.3) from stellar kinematics and bar pattern speed. The probability that the bar is rotating slowly is more than twice as likely as that the bar is fast. This allows us to infer that the formation of…
We present the largest publicly available catalog of interacting dwarf galaxies. It includes 177 nearby merging dwarf galaxies of stellar mass M$_{*}$ $<$ 10$^{10}$M$_{\sun}$ and redshifts z $<$ 0.02. These galaxies are selected by visual inspection of publicly available archival imaging from two wide-field optical surveys (SDSS III and the Legacy Survey), and they possess low surface brightness features that are likely the result of an interaction between dwarf galaxies. We list UV and optical photometric data which we use to estimate stellar masses and star formation rates. So far, the study…
Recent observations have discovered a number of extremely gas-rich very faint dwarf galaxies possibly embedded in low-mass dark matter halos. We investigate star formation histories of these gas-rich dwarf ("almost dark") galaxies both for isolated and interacting/merging cases. We find that although star formation rates (SFRs) are very low (<10^-5 M_sun/yr) in the simulated dwarfs in isolation for the total halo masses (M_h) of 10^8-10^9 M_sun, they can be dramatically increased to be ~ 10^{-4} M_sun/yr when they interact or merge with other dwarfs. These interacting faint dwarfs with central…

We present an analysis of physical and morphological properties of an interacting pair of dwarf galaxies UGC 4703 located at the vicinity of an isolated Milky-Way (MW) type spiral galaxy NGC 2718. Based on the comparison of physical and morphological properties with that of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC), we report that the UGC 4703 pair-NGC 2718 system is probably an LMC-SMC-MW analogue. Located at a sky projected distance of 81 kpc from NGC 2718, we find that UGC 4703 is clearly interacting with its nearby smaller mass companion UGC 4703B forming a bridge of stellar stre…
We study the density structures of dark matter subhalos for both cold dark matter and self-interacting dark matter models using high-resolution cosmological $N$-body simulations. We quantify subhalo's central density at 150 pc from the center of each subhalo at the classical dwarf spheroidal and ultrafaint dwarf scales found in Milky-Way sized halos. By comparing them with observations, we find that the self-interacting scattering cross-section of $σ/m<3\ \rm{cm^{2}g^{-1}}$ is favored. Due to the combination of hosts' tide and self-interactions, the central density of subhalos with small peric…
The ultra-diffuse dwarf galaxy NGC 1052-DF2 (DF2) has ten (eleven) measured globular clusters (GCs) with a line-of-sight velocity dispersion of $σ=7.8^{+5.2}_{-2.2}\,$km/s ($σ=10.6^{+3.9}_{-2.3}\,$km/s). Our conventional statistical analysis of the original ten GCs gives $σ=8.0^{+4.3}_{-3.0}\,$km/s. The overall distribution of velocities agrees well with a Gaussian of this width. Due to the non-linear Poisson equation in MOND, a dwarf galaxy has weaker self-gravity when in close proximity to a massive host. This external field effect is investigated using a new analytic formulation and fully s…
We present the discovery of neutral gas detected in both damped Ly$α$ absorption (DLA) and HI 21-cm emission outside of the stellar body of a galaxy, the first such detection in the literature. A joint analysis between the Cosmic Ultraviolet Baryon Survey and the MeerKAT Absorption Line Survey reveals an HI bridge connecting two interacting dwarf galaxies (log$(M_{\text{star}}/\text{M}_{\odot}) = 8.5 \pm 0.2$) that host a $z = 0.026$ DLA with log[$N$(HI)/cm$^{-2}$]$ = 20.60 \pm 0.05$ toward the QSO J2339-5523 ($z_{\text{QSO}} = 1.35$). At impact parameters of $d = 6$ and $33$ kpc, the dwarf ga…
Arp194 is a system of recently collided galaxies, where the southern galaxy (S) passed through the gaseous disc of the northern galaxy (N) which in turn consists of two close components. This system is of special interest due to the presence of regions of active star-formation in the bridge between galaxies, the brightest of which (the region A) has a size of at least 4 kpc. We obtained three spectral slices of the system for different slit positions at the 6-m telescope of SAO RAS. We estimated the radial distribution of line-of-sight velocity and velocity dispersion as well as the intensitie…
The Bose-Einstein condensate/scalar field dark matter model, considers that the dark matter is composed by spinless-ultra-light particles which can be described by a scalar field. This model is an alternative model to the $Λ$-cold dark matter paradigm, and therefore should be studied at galactic and cosmological scales. Dwarf spheroidal galaxies have been very useful when studying any dark matter theory, because the dark matter dominates their dynamics. In this paper we study the Sextans dwarf spheroidal galaxy, embedded in a scalar field dark matter halo. We explore how the dissolution time-s…
Dwarf irregular galaxies (dIrrs) including the Magellanic Clouds in the local Universe, in many cases, exhibit an unusually low N/O abundance ratio (log N/O ~ -1.5) in H II regions as compared with the solar value (~-0.9). This ratio is broadly equivalent to the average level of extremely metal-poor stars in the Galactic halo, suggesting that N released from asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars is missing in the present-day interstellar matter of these dIrrs. We find evidence for past tidal interactions in the properties of individual dIrrs exhibiting low N/O ratios, while a clear signature of …
To search for Tidal Dwarf Galaxies (TDGs) and to study star formation in tidal features, we are conducting a large UV imaging survey of interacting galaxies selected from the Arp (1996) Atlas using the GALEX telescope. As part of that study, we present a GALEX UV and SDSS and SARA optical study of the gas-rich interacting galaxy pair Arp 305 (NGC 4016/7). The GALEX UV data reveal much extended diffuse UV emission and star formation outside the disks. This includes a luminous star forming region between the two galaxies, and a number of such regions in tidal tails. We have identified 45 young s…
The observed anti-correlation between the central dark matter (DM) densities of the bright Milky Way (MW) dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) and their orbital pericenter distances poses a potential signature of self-interacting dark matter (SIDM). In this work we investigate this possibility by analysing the range of SIDM scattering cross section per unit mass, $σ/m_χ$, able to explain such anti-correlation. We simulate the orbital evolution of dSphs subhaloes around the MW assuming an analytical form for the gravitational potential, adopting the proper motions from the Gaia mission and includi…
(Abridged) Type I superluminous supernovae (SLSNe I) are rare, powerful explosions whose mechanism and progenitors remain elusive. SLSNe I show a preference for low-metallicity, actively star-forming dwarf galaxies. We investigate whether the hosts of SLSNe I show increased evidence for interaction. We use a sample of 42 SLSN I images obtained with $\textit{HST}$ and measure the number of companion galaxies by counting the objects detected within a given radius from the host. As a comparison, we used two Monte Carlo-based methods to estimate the expected average number of companion objects in …
In this paper, we introduce the Local Volume TiNy Titans sample (LV-TNT), which is a part of a larger body of work on interacting dwarf galaxies: TNT (Stierwalt et al. 2015). This LV-TNT sample consists of 10 dwarf galaxy pairs in the Local Universe (< 30 Mpc from Milky Way), which span mass ratios of M_(*,1)/M_(*,2) < 20, projected separations < 100 kpc, and pair member masses of log(M_*/M_Sun) < 9.9. All 10 LV-TNT pairs have resolved synthesis maps of their neutral hydrogen, are located in a range of environments and captured at various interaction stages. This enables us to do a comparative…
We compare a suite of four simulated dwarf galaxies formed in 10$^{10} M_{\odot}$ haloes of collisionless Cold Dark Matter (CDM) with galaxies simulated in the same haloes with an identical galaxy formation model but a non-zero cross-section for dark matter self-interactions. These cosmological zoom-in simulations are part of the Feedback In Realistic Environments (FIRE) project and utilize the FIRE-2 model for hydrodynamics and galaxy formation physics. We find the stellar masses of the galaxies formed in Self-Interacting Dark Matter (SIDM) with $σ/m= 1\, cm^2/g$ are very similar to those in …
We present high-resolution Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) HI observations and deep Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) optical imaging of two galaxy groups: NGC 4725/47 and NGC 3166/9. These data are part of a multi-wavelength unbiased survey of the gas-rich dwarf galaxy populations in three nearby interacting galaxy groups. The NGC 4725/47 group hosts two tidal knots and one dIrr. Both tidal knots are located within a prominent HI tidal tail, appear to have sufficient mass (M_gas~10^8 M_sol) to evolve into long-lived tidal dwarf galaxies (TDGs) and are fairly young in age. The NGC 3…
We investigate the effect of self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) on the density profiles of $V_{\rm max} \simeq 40~km~s^{-1}$ isolated dwarf dark matter halos -- the scale of relevance for the too big to fail problem (TBTF) -- using very high-resolution cosmological zoom simulations. Each halo has millions of particles within its virial radius. We find that SIDM models with cross sections per unit mass spanning the range σ/m = $0.5 - 50$ $cm^2~g^{-1}$ alleviate TBTF and produce constant density cores of size 300-1000 pc, comparable to the half-light radii of $M_\star$ ~ $10^{5-7}$ $M_\odot$ dw…
Dwarf spheroidal galaxies are the most common type of galaxies, and are the most dark matter dominated objects in the Universe. Therefore, they are ideal laboratories to test any dark matter model. The Bose-Einstein condensate/scalar field dark matter model considers that the dark matter is composed by spinless-ultra-light particles which can be described by a scalar field. This model is an alternative to the $Λ$-cold dark matter model. In this work I study the kinematics of the dwarf spheroidal satellite galaxies of the Milky Way and Andromeda, under the scalar field/BEC dark matter paradigm …
Dwarf galaxies generally follow a mass-metallicity (MZ) relation, where more massive objects retain a larger fraction of heavy elements. Young tidal dwarf galaxies (TDGs), born in the tidal tails produced by interacting gas-rich galaxies, have been thought to not follow the MZ relation, because they inherit the metallicity of the more massive parent galaxies. We present chemical evolution models to investigate if TDGs that formed at very high redshifts, where the metallicity of their parent galaxy was very low, can produce the observed MZ relation. Assuming that galaxy interactions were more f…
The formation and evolution of gravitationally bound, star forming substructures in tidal tails of interacting galaxies, called tidal dwarf galaxies (TDG), has been studied, until now, only in idealised simulations of individual pairs of interacting galaxies for pre-determined orbits, mass ratios, and gas fractions. Here, we present the first identification of TDG candidates in fully cosmological simulations, specifically the high-resolution simulations of the EAGLE suite. The finite resolution of the simulation limits their ability to predict the exact formation rate and survival timescale of…
Tidal Dwarf Galaxies (TDG), concentrations of interstellar gas and stars in the tidal features of interacting galaxies, have been the subject of much scrutiny. The `smoking gun' that will prove the TDG hypothesis is the discovery of independent dwarf galaxies that are detached from other galaxies, but have clear tidal histories. As part of a search for TDGs we are using GALEX to conduct a large UV imaging survey of interacting galaxies selected from the Arp Atlas. As part of that study, we present a GALEX UV and SDSS and SARA optical study of the gas-rich interacting galaxy pair Arp 305. The G…
Interactions between pairs of isolated dwarf galaxies provide a critical window into low-mass hierarchical, gas-dominated galaxy assembly and the buildup of stellar mass in low-metallicity systems. We present the first VLT/MUSE optical IFU observations of the interacting dwarf pair dm1647+21, selected from the TiNy Titans survey. The H$α$ emission is widespread and corresponds to a total unobscured star formation rate (SFR) of 0.44 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, 2.7 times higher than the SFR inferred from SDSS data. The implied specific SFR (sSFR) for the system is elevated by more than an order of ma…
We present results from our Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) HI, Himalayan Chandra Telescope (HCT) Halpha, 1m Sampurnanand Telescope (ST) and 1.3m Devasthal Fast Optical Telescope (DFOT) deep optical observations of NGC 7805/6 (Arp 112) system to test KUG 2359+311's tidal dwarf galaxy (TDG) candidacy and explore the properties of the interacting system. Our GMRT HI map shows no HI detection associated with KUG 2359+311, nor any HI tail or bridge-like structure connecting KUG 2359+311 to the NGC 7805/6 system. Our HCT Halpha image on the other hand, shows strong detections in KUG 2359+311…
Through adaptive optics (AO) imaging with the SOUL+LUCI instrument at the Large Binocular Telescope we were able to resolve, for the first time, individual stars in the gas-rich galaxy DDO68 C. This system was already suggested to be interacting with the extremely metal poor dwarf DDO68, but its nature has remained elusive so far because of the presence of a bright foreground star close to its line of sight, that hampers a detailed study of its stellar population and distance. In our study, we turned this interloper star into an opportunity to have a deeper insight on DDO68 C, using it as a gu…

We show that cold dark matter particles interacting through a Yukawa potential could naturally explain the recently observed cores in dwarf galaxies without affecting the dynamics of objects with a much larger velocity dispersion, such as clusters of galaxies. The velocity dependence of the associated cross-section as well as the possible exothermic nature of the interaction alleviates earlier concerns about strongly interacting dark matter. Dark matter evaporation in low-mass objects might explain the observed deficit of satellite galaxies in the Milky Way halo and have important implications…

Collisional debris around interacting and post-interacting galaxies often display condensations of gas and young stars that can potentially form gravitationally bound objects: Tidal Dwarf Galaxies (TDGs). We summarise recent results on TDGs, which are originally published in Lelli et al. (2015, A&A). We study a sample of six TDGs around three different interacting systems, using high-resolution HI observations from the Very Large Array. We find that the HI emission associated to TDGs can be described by rotating disc models. These discs, however, would have undergone less than one orbit since …

We introduce TiNy Titans (TNT), the first systematic study of star formation and the subsequent processing of the interstellar medium in interacting dwarf galaxies. Here we present the first results from a multiwavelength observational program based on a sample of 104 dwarf galaxy pairs selected from a range of environments within the SDSS and caught in various stages of interaction. The TNT dwarf pairs span mass ratios of M1/M2 <10, projected separations <50 kpc, and pair member masses of 7< log(M_*/Msun) <9.7. The dwarf-dwarf merger sequence, as defined by TNT, demonstrates conclusively and …
We report the detection of a pair of dwarf galaxies at $z\!=\!0.30$ which may be in the early stages of an interaction. Both galaxies have stellar masses of $<10^{9}M_\odot$, and display a projected separation of $\sim\!29$kpc and a physical separation of $\sim\!240$kpc. Evidence of ongoing star formation has been found in both galaxies, with neither one showing an enhanced star-formation rate that would be expected if they were already interacting. One galaxy displays a disturbed morphology but shows ordered gas rotation, which may reflect a previous minor merger event in the recent history o…
The relative average minimum projected separations of star clusters in the Legacy ExtraGalactic UV Survey (LEGUS) and in tidal dwarfs around the interacting galaxy NGC 5291 are determined as a function of cluster mass to look for cluster-cluster mass segregation. Class 2 and 3 LEGUS clusters, which have a more irregular internal structure than the compact and symmetric class 1 clusters, are found to be mass segregated in low mass galaxies, which means that the more massive clusters are systematically bunched together compared to the lower mass clusters. This mass segregation is not present in …
Tidal dwarf galaxies (TDGs) are recycled objects that form within the collisional debris of interacting/merging galaxies. They are expected to be devoid of non-baryonic dark matter, since they can form only from dissipative material ejected from the discs of the progenitor galaxies. We investigate the gas dynamics in a sample of six bona-fide TDGs around three interacting and post-interacting systems: NGC 4694, NGC 5291, and NGC 7252 ("Atoms for Peace"). For NGC 4694 and NGC 5291 we analyse existing HI data from the Very Large Array (VLA), while for NGC 7252 we present new HI observations from…
We present the first cosmological simulations of dwarf galaxies, which include dark matter self-interactions and baryons. We study two dwarf galaxies within cold dark matter, and four different elastic self-interacting scenarios with constant and velocity-dependent cross sections, motivated by a new force in the hidden dark matter sector. Our highest resolution simulation has a baryonic mass resolution of $1.8\times 10^2\,{\rm M}_\odot$ and a gravitational softening length of $34\,{\rm pc}$ at $z=0$. In this first study we focus on the regime of mostly isolated dwarf galaxies with halo masses …
Compact Galactic binaries where at least one member is a white dwarf or neutron star constitute the majority of individually detectable sources for future low-frequency space-based gravitational-wave (GW) observatories; they also form an unresolved continuum, the dominant Galactic foreground at frequencies below a few mHz. Due to the paucity of electromagnetic observations, the majority of studies of Galactic-binary populations so far have been based on population-synthesis simulations. However, recent surveys have reported several new detections of white-dwarf binaries, providing new constrai…
We present results from N-body simulations of self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) subhalos, which could host ultra-faint dwarf spheroidal galaxies, inside a Milky-Way-like main halo. We find that high-concentration subhalos are driven to gravothermal core collapse, while low-concentration subhalos develop large (kpc-sized) low-density cores, with both effects depending sensitively on the satellite's orbit and the self-interaction cross section over mass $σ/m$. The overall effect for $σ/m \gtrsim 3 \ \rm cm^2/g$ is to increase the range of inner densities, potentially explaining the observed di…
Aims. We use stellar line-of-sight velocities to constrain the dark matter-density profile of Eridanus 2, an ultra-faint dwarf galaxy ($M_\mathrm{V} = -7.1$, $M_* \approx 9 \times 10^4\,M_\odot$). We furthermore derive constraints on fundamental properties of self-interacting and fuzzy dark matter scenarios. Methods. We present new observations of Eridanus 2 from MUSE-Faint, a survey of ultra-faint dwarf galaxies with MUSE on the Very Large Telescope, and determine line-of-sight velocities for stars inside the half-light radius. Combined with literature data, we have 92 stellar tracers out to …
Recent observations in galaxies and clusters indicate dark matter density profiles exhibit core-like structures which contradict to the numerical simulation results of collisionless cold dark matter. On the other hand, it has been shown that cold dark matter particles interacting through a Yukawa potential could naturally explain the cores in dwarf galaxies. In this article, I use the Yukawa Potential interacting dark matter model to derive two simple scaling relations on the galactic and cluster scales respectively, which give excellent agreements with observations. Also, in our model, the ma…
