We investigate the scattering of a quark on a heavy nucleus at high energies using the time-dependent basis light-front quantization (tBLFQ) formalism, which is the first application of the tBLFQ formalism in QCD. We present the real-time evolution of the quark wave function in a strong classical color field of the relativistic nucleus, described as the Color Glass Condensate. The quark and the nucleus color field are simulated in the QCD SU(3) color space. We calculate the total and the differential cross sections, and the quark distribution in coordinate and color spaces using the tBLFQ approach. We recover the eikonal cross sections in the eikonal limit. We find that the differential cross section from the tBLFQ simulation is in agreement with a perturbative calculation at large $p_\perp$, and it deviates from the perturbative calculation at small $p_\perp$ due to higher-order contributions. In particular, we relax the eikonal limit by letting the quark carry realistic finite longitudinal momenta. We study the sub-eikonal effect on the quark through the transverse coordinate distribution of the quark with different longitudinal momentum, and we find the sub-eikonal effect to be sizable. Our results can significantly reduce the theoretical uncertainties in small $p_\perp$ region which has important implications to the phenomenology of the hadron-nucleus and deep inelastic scattering at high energies.
The bremsstrahlung produced when heavy nuclei collide is estimated for central collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Soft photons can be used to infer the rapidity distribution of the outgoing charge. An experimental design is outlined.
Pion and photon production cross sections are analyzed in proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions at energies 20 GeV < s^1/2 < 60 GeV. We separate the proton-proton and nuclear contributions to transverse-momentum broadening and suggest a new mechanism for the nuclear enhancement in the high transverse-momentum region.
The cross sections for exclusive muon pair production in nucleus - nucleus collisions are calculated and several differential distributions are shown. Realistic (Fourier transform of charge density) charge form factors of nuclei are used and the corresponding results are compared with the cross sections calculated with monopole form factor often used in the literature and discussed recently in the context of higher-order QED corrections. Absorption effects are discussed and quantified. The cross sections obtained with realistic form factors are significantly smaller than those obtained with th…
I discuss strangeness production in nucleus-nucleus reactions at ultrarelativistic energies (up to 200 AGeV). In these reactions matter may be created with densities and temperatures in the transition region between quark-gluon plasma (QGP) and hadron gas. Strange anti-baryon enhancement at 200 AGeV and probably even more so at 10 AGeV signals importance of interactions beyond hadron gas dynamics. The systematics of strangeness production indicates that energy and baryon density are key variables while the size of the production volume plays no visible role. Analysis of strangeness appears use…
An outlook on physics at the high energy frontier of nucleus-nucleus collisions is presented, on the basis of the new results presented at Quark Matter 2011 by the LHC and RHIC experiments.
We calculate the centrality dependence of inclusive cross section of large-pT charmed-meson ($D^{0}$, $D^{*}$, $D^{*+}$, and $D_{s}^{+}$) from heavy quark fragmentation by the hard photoproduction processes for the nucleus-nucleus collisions in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. The numerical results indicate that the modification of the hard photoproduction processes cannot be negligible for the charmed-meson production in Au-Au collisions at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and Pb-Pb collisions at Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
We use a Glauber-like approach to describe very energetic nucleus-nucleus collisions as a sequence of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions. No free parameters are needed: all the information comes from simple parametrizations of nucleon-nucleon collision data. Produced mesons are assumed not to interact with each other or with the original baryons. Comparisons are made to published experimental measurements of baryon rapidity and transverse momentum distributions, negative hadron rapidity and transverse momentum distributions, average multiplicities of pions, kaons, hyperons, and antihyperons, an…
Ratios of hadronic abundances are analyzed for pp and nucleus-nucleus collisions at sqrt(s)=20 GeV using the microscopic transport model UrQMD. Secondary interactions significantly change the primordial hadronic cocktail of the system. A comparison to data shows a strong dependence on rapidity. Without assuming thermal and chemical equilibrium, predicted hadron yields and ratios agree with many of the data, the few observed discrepancies are discussed.
Elliptical energy flow patterns in non-central Au(11.7AGeV) on Au reactions have been studied employing the RQMD model. The strength of these azimuthal asymmetries is calculated comparing the results in two different modes of RQMD (mean field and cascade). It is found that the elliptical flow which is readily observable with current experimental detectors may help to distinguish different reasonable expansion scenarios for baryon-dense matter. The final asymmetries are very sensitive to the pressure at maximum compression, because they involve a partial cancelation between early squeeze-out an…
The cross sections for exclusive $D^+D^-$ and $D^0 \bar {D^0}$ meson pair production in peripheral nucleus - nucleus collisions are calculated and several differential distributions are presented. The calculation of the elementary $γγ\to D \bar D$ cross section is done within the heavy-quark approximation and in the Brodsky- Lapage formalism with distribution amplitudes describing recent CLEO data on leptonic $D^+$ decay. Realistic (Fourier transform of charge density) charge form factors of nuclei are used to generate photon flux factors. Absorption effects are discussed and quantified. The c…
For nucleus-nucleus collisions at Relativistic-Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) energies we calculate observables in two conceptually transport theories, i.e. the n-body molecular dynamical model RSP and in the Parton-Hadron-String-Dynamics (PHSD), starting out from the same distribution of the initial energy density at the quark gluon plasma (QGP) formation time. The RSP is based on the Nambu Jona-Lasinio (NJL) Lagrangian whereas in PHSD the partons are described by the dynamical quasi-particle model (DQPM). Despite of the very different description of the parton properties, their interactions and o…
We study the disintegration of nuclei by strong electromagnetic fields induced by ultrarelativistic heavy ions. The proposed multi-step model includes 1) the absorption of a virtual photon by a nucleus, 2) intranuclear cascades of produced hadrons and 3) statistical decay of the excited residual nucleus. The combined model describes well existing data on projectile fragmentation at energy 200 GeV per nucleon. Electromagnetic multifragmentation of nuclei is predicted to be an important reaction mechanism at RHIC and LHC energies.
In a recent Letter, Geiger presents calculations of the dilepton emission from the early stage of ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions using the parton cascade model (PCM). He shows that the $M_\perp$ scaling is not observed. In this Comment, we point out that this is largely due to a defect in the PCM.
The hadronic phase space distributions calculated with the transport model RQMD for central S(200 AGeV) on S and Pb(160AGeV) on Pb collisions are analyzed to study the deviations from ideal hydrodynamical evolution. After the preequilibrium stage, which lasts for approximately 4 (2) fm/c in Pb+Pb (S+S) the source stays in approximate kinetic equilibrium for about 2 fm/c at a temperature close to 140 MeV. The interactions of mesons last until around 14 (5) fm/c during which time strong transverse flow is generated. The interactions in the hadronic resonance gas are not sufficiently strong to ma…
We perform a gauge-transformation on the time-dependent Dirac equation describing the evolution of an electron in a heavy-ion collision to remove the explicit dependence on the long-range part of the interaction. We solve, in an ultra-relativistic limit, the gauged-transformed Dirac equation using light-front variables and a light-fronts representation, obtaining non-perturbative results for the free pair-creation amplitudes in the collider frame. Our result reproduces the result of second-order perturbation theory in the small charge limit while non-perturbative effects arise for realistic ch…
The cross section for exclusive $π^+π^-$ and $π^0π^0$ meson pairs production in peripheral ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions is calculated at the energy available at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, i.e., $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=3.5$ TeV. The cross section for elementary $γγ\toππ$ process is calculated with the help of the pQCD Brodsky-Lepage approach with the distribution amplitude used recently to describe the pion transition form factor measured by the BaBar Collaboration.
Dilepton production in $pp$ and $Au+Au$ nucleus-nucleus collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV as well as in $In+In$ and $Pb+Au$ at 158 A$\cdot$GeV is studied within the microscopic HSD transport approach. A comparison to the data from the PHENIX Collaboration at RHIC shows that standard in-medium effects of the $ρ, ω$ vector mesons - compatible with the NA60 data for $In+In$ at 158 A$\cdot$GeV and the CERES data for $Pb+Au$ at 158 A$\cdot$GeV - do not explain the large enhancement observed in the invariant mass regime from 0.2 to 0.5 GeV in $Au+Au$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV relative to $…
This talk reviews progress reported at Quark-Matter 2001 on various theoretical aspects of the quark-gluon plasma and discusses how the new results obtained at RHIC change the standard picture of ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions.
The cross section for exclusive production of $π^+ π^-$ and $π^0 π^0$ meson pairs in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions is calculated for LHC energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}} =$ 3.5 TeV taking into account photon-photon mechanism. We concentrate on the production of large two-pion invariant masses where the mechanism of the elementary $γγ\to ππ$ process is not fully understood. In order to include a size of nuclei we perform calculation in the impact-parameter equivalent photon approximation (EPA). Realistic charge densities are used to calculate charged form factor of $^{208}$Pb nucleus and to gener…
We investigate the scattering of a quark jet on a high-energy heavy nucleus using the time-dependent light-front Hamiltonian approach. We simulate a real-time evolution of the quark in a strong classical color field of the relativistic nucleus, described as the Color Glass Condensate. We study the sub-eikonal effect by letting the quark jet carry realistic finite longitudinal momenta, and we find sizeable changes on the transverse coordinate distribution of the quark. We also observe the energy loss of the quark through gluon emissions in the $\ket{q}+\ket{qg}$ Fock space. This approach provid…
A light front treatment of the nuclear wave function is developed and applied, using the mean field approximation, to infinite nuclear matter. The nuclear mesons are shown to carry about a third of the nuclear plus momentum, p+; but their momentum distribution has support only at p+ =0, and the mesons do not contribute to nuclear deep inelastic scattering. This zero mode effect occurs because the meson fields are independent of space-time position.
We investigate ultrarelativistic collisions of the 12C nucleus with heavy targets and show that the harmonic flow measures based on ratios of cumulant moments are particularly suited to study the intrinsic deformation of the 12C wave function. That way one can probe the expected alpha clusterization in the ground state, which leads to large initial triangularity in the shape of the fireball in the transverse plane. We show that the clusterization effect results in very characteristic behavior of the ratios of the cumulant moments as functions of the number of participant nucleons, both for the…
We calculate total and differential cross sections for $J/ψ$ photoproduction in ultrarelativistic lead-lead collisions at the LHC energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$ TeV. We use a simple model based on vector dominance picture and multiple scattering of the hadronic ($c \bar c$) state in a cold nucleus. In our analysis we use Glauber formulae for calculating $σ_{tot,J/ψPb}$ which is a building block of our model. For semi-central collisions a modification of the photon flux is necessary. We discuss how to effectively correct photon fluxes for geometry effects. We try to estimate the cross sections for…
We investigate the space-time structure of the classical gluon field produced in an ultrarelativistic collision between color charges. The classical solution which was computed previously in a perturbative approach is shown to become unstable on account of the non-Abelian self-interaction neglected in the perturbative solution scheme. The time scale for growth of the instabilities is found to be of the order of the distance between the colliding color charges. We argue that these instabilities will eventually lead to thermalization of gluons produced in an ultrarelativistic collision between h…
The delta function gauge of the electromagnetic potential allows semiclassical formulas to be obtained for the probability of exciting a single electron out of the ground state in an ultrarelativistic heavy ion reaction. Exact formulas have been obtained in the limits of zero impact parameter and large, perturbative, impact parameter. The perturbative impact parameter result can be exploited to obtain a semi-empirical cross section formula of the form, sigma = A ln(gamma) + B, for single electron ionization. A and B can be evaluated for any combination of target and projectile, and the resulti…
Partonic matter produced in the early stage of ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions is assumed to be composed mainly of gluons, and quarks and antiquarks are produced at later times. To study the implications of such a scenario, the dynamical evolution of a chemically nonequilibrated system is described by the ideal (2+1)-dimensional hydrodynamics with a time dependent (anti)quark fugacity. The equation of state interpolates linearly between the lattice data for the pure gluonic matter and the lattice data for the chemically equilibrated quark-gluon plasma. The spectra and elliptic flo…
A fundamental question of physics is what ultimately happens to matter as it is heated or compressed. In the realm of very high temperature and density the fundamental degrees of freedom of the strong interaction, quarks and gluons, come into play and a transition from matter consisting of confined baryons and mesons to a state with 'liberated' quarks and gluons is expected. The study of the possible phases of strongly-interacting matter is at the focus of many research activities worldwide. In this article we discuss physical aspects of the phase diagram, its relation to the evolution of the …
In a recent publication we have calculated elastic charmonium production in ep collisions employing realistic charmonia wave functions and dipole cross sections and have found good agreement with the data in a wide range of s and Q^2. Using the ingredients from those calculations we calculate exclusive electroproduction of charmonia off nuclei. Here new effects become important, (i) color filtering of the c-cbar pair on its trajectory through nuclear matter, (ii) dependence on the finite lifetime of the c-cbar fluctuation (coherence length) and (iii) gluon shadowing in a nucleus compared to th…
The problem of understanding the nuclear effects observed in lepton-nucleus deep-inelastic-scattering (the EMC effect) is still with us. Standard nuclear models (those using only hadronic degrees of freedom) are not able to account for the EMC effect. Thus it is necessary to understand how the nuclear medium modifies quark wave functions in the nucleus. Possibilities for such modifications, represented by the quark meson coupling model, and the suppression of point-like-configurations are discussed, and methods to experimentally choose between these are reviewed.
Directed flow in ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions is analyzed using the reaction plane from elliptic flow, which reduces the bias from nonflow effects. We combine this method with the determination of elliptic flow from Lee-Yang zeroes. The resulting method is more consistent and somewhat easier to implement than the previously used method based on three-particle cumulants, and is also less biased by nonflow correlations. Error terms from residual nonflow correlations are carefully estimated, as well as statistical errors. We discuss the application of the method at RHIC and LHC.
We study the real-time evolution of an electron influenced by intense electromagnetic fields using the time-dependent basis light-front quantization (tBLFQ) framework. We focus on demonstrating the non-perturbative feature of the tBLFQ approach through a realistic application of the strong coupling QED problem, in which the electromagnetic fields are generated by an ultra-relativistic nucleus. We calculate transitions of an electron influenced by such electromagnetic fields and we show agreement with light-front perturbation theory when the atomic number of the nucleus is small. We compare tBL…
We obtain the light meson mass spectroscopy from the light-front quantum chromodynamics (QCD) Hamiltonian, determined for their constituent quark-antiquark and quark-antiquark-gluon Fock components, together with a three-dimensional confinement. The eigenvectors of the light-front effective Hamiltonian provide a good quality description of the pion electromagnetic form factor, decay constant, and the valence quark distribution functions following QCD scale evolution. We also show that the pion's gluon densities can be probed through the pion-nucleus induced $J/ψ$ production data. Our pion part…
A light-front treatment for the scalar and vector meson momentum distribution functions is developed using a model in which the nucleus is treated a static source of radius $R$. The limit $R\to \infty$ corresponds to infinite nuclear matter. In this limit, the scalar mesons are shown to carry a vanishing momentum fraction of the nuclear plus momentum $k^+$, but the vector mesons carry a significant fraction, all occuring at the experimentally inaccessible value of $k^+=0$. This confirms earlier work. A study of the $R$ dependence for sizes of real nuclei shows that a fraction of the scalar and…
Using the charmonium light-front wavefunctions obtained by diagonalizing an effective Hamiltonian with the one-gluon exchange interaction and a confining potential inspired by light-front holography in the basis light-front quantization formalism, we compute production of charmonium states in diffractive deep inelastic scattering and ultra-peripheral heavy ion collisions within the dipole picture. Our method allows us to predict yields of all vector charmonium states below the open flavor thresholds in high-energy deep inelastic scattering, proton-nucleus and ultra-peripheral heavy ion collisi…
We obtain the pion and the kaon parton distribution functions from the eigenstates of a light front effective Hamiltonian in the constituent quark-antiquark representation suitable for low-momentum scale applications. By taking these scales as the only free parameters, the valence quark distribution functions of the pion, after QCD evolution, are consistent with the data from the FNAL-E615 experiment. The ratio of the up quark distribution of the kaon to that of the pion also agrees with the CERN-NA3 experiment. Supplemented by known parton distribution functions for the nucleons, we further o…
In this paper we calculate the contribution to rapidity and angular correlations of the first Pomeron loop diagram in the dense partonic environment. This diagram is expected to give the largest contribution to the density variation mechanism of the angular correlations. We show that this diagrams leads to sizable contributions to the rapidity correlation functions of the order of $σ_{in} /\Lb πR^2\Rb$ where $σ_{in}$ is the inelastic cross section and $R$ is the size of the typical dipole inside the proton saturation scale. Therefore, the correlations do not depend on the saturation scale. We …
We investigate the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the pion and the kaon by combining quantum chromodynamics (QCD) evolution with the basis light front quantization. The initial PDFs result from the light front wave functions obtained by diagonalizing the effective Hamiltonian consisting of the holographic QCD confinement potential, a complementary longitudinal confinement potential, and the color-singlet Nambu--Jona-Lasinio interactions. The valence-quark PDF of the pion, after QCD evolution, is consistent with the result from the E-0615 experiment at Fermilab. Meanwhile, the pion str…
Partonic matter produced in the early stage of ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions is assumed to be composed mainly of gluons, and quarks and antiquarks are produced at later times. The comparable hydrodynamic simulations of heavy-ion collisions for (2+1)-flavor and Yang-Mills equations of state performed by using three different hydrodynamic codes are presented. Assuming slow chemical equilibration of quarks, the spectra and elliptic flows of thermal dileptons and photons are calculated for central Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC energy of $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}} = 2.76$ TeV. It is shown t…
The theoretical treatment of alpha decay by Gamow is revisited by investigating the quantum time scales in tunneling. The time spent by an alpha particle in front of the barrier and traversing it before escape is evaluated using microscopic alpha nucleus potentials. The half-life of a nucleus is shown to correspond to the time spent by the alpha knocking in front of the barrier. Calculations for medium and super heavy nuclei show that from a multitude of available tunneling time definitions, the transmission dwell time gives the bulk of the lifetime of the decaying state, in most cases.
The principles behind the detailed results of a light-front mean field theory of finite nuclei are elucidated by deriving the nucleon mode equation using a simple general argument, based on the idea that a static source in equal time coordinates corresponds to a moving source in light front coordinates. This idea also allows us to solve several simple toy model examples: scalar field in a box, 1+1 dimensional bag model, three-dimensional harmonic oscillator and the Hulthén potential. The latter provide simplified versions of momentum distributions and form factors of relevance to experiments. …
Collective interactions in the preequilibrium quark matter and hadronic resonance gas stage of ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions are studied in the framework of the the transport theoretical approach RQMD. The paper reviews string fusion into color ropes and hadronic rescattering which serve as models for these interactions. Hadron production in central Pb(160AGeV) on Pb collisions has been calculated. The changes of the final flavor composition are more pronounced than in previous RQMD studies of light ion induced reactions at 200AGeV. The ratio of created quark pairs $s\bar{s}$/($…
We derive simple relations which express 2D light front force distributions in terms of 3D Breit frame pressure and shear force distributions. Mathematically the relations correspond to invertible Abel transformation and they establish one-to-one mathematical equivalence of 3D Breit frame force distributions and 2D light front ones. Any knowledge (model calculation, experimental measurement, etc.) about pressure and shear force distributions in Breit frame can be unambiguously transformed into light front force distributions with the help of Abel transformation. It is important that the transf…
The spectrum of dileptons produced by the quark-gluon plasma in an ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus collision depends only, to a good approximation, on the transverse mass M_t of the dilepton. This scaling is exact as long as transverse flow is negligible, and the system is in local thermal equilibrium. We implement a state-of-the-art modelization of kinetic and chemical equilibration in the early stages of the evolution to study the modifications of the spectrum. Violations of M_t scaling resulting from these effects are evaluated as a function of the shear viscosity to entropy ratio (eta/s)…
The production of dileptons with an invariant mass in the range 1 GeV < M < 5 GeV provides unique insight into the approach to thermal equilibrium in ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions. In this mass range, they are produced through the annihilation of quark-antiquark pairs in the early stages of the collision. They are sensitive to the anisotropy of the quark momentum distribution, and also to the quark abundance, which is expected to be underpopulated relative to thermal equilibrium. We take into account both effects based on recent theoretical developments in QCD kinetic theory, an…
We study exclusive charmonium production in diffractive deep inelastic scattering and ultra-peripheral heavy-ion collisions within the dipole picture. The mass spectrum and light-front wavefunctions of charmonium are obtained from the basis light-front quantization approach, using the one-gluon exchange interaction plus a confining potential inspired by light-front holography. We apply these light-front wavefunctions to exclusive charmonium production. The resulting cross sections are in reasonable agreement with electron-proton collision data at HERA and ultra-peripheral nucleus collision mea…
At leading twist the transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions of the pion consist of two functions, the unpolarized $f_{1,π}(x,\boldsymbol k^{\, 2}_\perp)$ and the Boer-Mulders function $h_{1,π}^{\perp}(x,\boldsymbol k^{\, 2}_\perp)$. We study both functions within a light-front constituent model of the pion, comparing the results with different pion models and the corresponding nucleon distributions from a light-front constituent model. After evolution from the model scale to the relevant experimental scales, the results for the collinear pion valence parton distribution function $f…
I discuss the use of light cone variables to compute the nucleonic and mesonic components of nuclear wave functions. A Lagrangian and its energy-momentum tensor $T^{^+μ}$ is used to define the total momentum operators $P^μ$. The aim is to use wave functions, expressed in terms of plus-momentum variables, which are used to analyze high energy experiments such as deep inelastic scattering, Drell-Yan production, (e,e') and (p,p') reactions. We discuss infinite nuclear matter within the mean field approximation; finite nuclei using the mean field approximation; nucleon-nucleon scattering, within t…
