This paper introduces Isabelle/HoTT, the first development of homotopy type theory in the Isabelle proof assistant. Building on earlier work by Paulson, I use Isabelle's existing logical framework infrastructure to implement essential automation, such as type checking and term elaboration, that is usually handled on the source code level of dependently typed systems. I also integrate the propositions-as-types paradigm with the declarative Isar proof language, providing an alternative to the tactic-based proofs of Coq and the proof terms of Agda. The infrastructure developed is then used to formalize foundational results from the Homotopy Type Theory book.
In this Masters thesis we present an implementation of a fragment of "book HoTT" as an object logic for the interactive proof assistant Isabelle. We also give a mathematical description of the underlying theory of the Isabelle/Pure logical framework, and discuss various issues and design decisions that arise when attempting to encode intensional dependent type theory with universes inside a simple type-theoretic logical foundation.
Formal verification of cyber-physical and robotic systems requires that we can accurately model physical quantities that exist in the real-world. The use of explicit units in such quantities can allow a higher degree of rigour, since we can ensure compatibility of quantities in calculations. At the same time, improper use of units can be a barrier to safety and therefore it is highly desirable to have automated sanity checking in physical calculations. In this paper, we contribute a mechanisation of the International System of Quantities (ISQ) and the associated SI unit system in Isabelle/HOL.…
Interactive theorem provers have developed dramatically over the past four decades, from primitive beginnings to today's powerful systems. Here, we focus on Isabelle/HOL and its distinctive strengths. They include automatic proof search, borrowing techniques from the world of first order theorem proving, but also the automatic search for counterexamples. They include a highly readable structured language of proofs and a unique interactive development environment for editing live proof documents. Everything rests on the foundation conceived by Robin Milner for Edinburgh LCF: a proof kernel, usi…
Despite the considerable interest in new dependent type theories, simple type theory (which dates from 1940) is sufficient to formalise serious topics in mathematics. This point is seen by examining formal proofs of a theorem about stereographic projections. A formalisation using the HOL Light proof assistant is contrasted with one using Isabelle/HOL. Harrison's technique for formalising Euclidean spaces is contrasted with an approach using Isabelle/HOL's axiomatic type classes. However, every formal system can be outgrown, and mathematics should be formalised with a view that it will eventual…

A generalized set theory (GST) is like a standard set theory but also can have non-set structured objects that can contain other structured objects including sets. This paper presents Isabelle/HOL support for GSTs, which are treated as type classes that combine features that specify kinds of mathematical objects, e.g., sets, ordinal numbers, functions, etc. GSTs can have an exception feature that eases representing partial functions and undefinedness. When assembling a GST, extra axioms are generated following a user-modifiable policy to fill specification gaps. Specialized type-like predicate…
Many automatic theorem provers are restricted to untyped logics, and existing translations from typed logics are bulky or unsound. Recent research proposes monotonicity as a means to remove some clutter when translating monomorphic to untyped first-order logic. Here we pursue this approach systematically, analysing formally a variety of encodings that further improve on efficiency while retaining soundness and completeness. We extend the approach to rank-1 polymorphism and present alternative schemes that lighten the translation of polymorphic symbols based on the novel notion of "cover". The …
This paper defines homology in homotopy type theory, in the process stable homotopy groups are also defined. Previous research in synthetic homotopy theory is relied on, in particular the definition of cohomology. This work lays the foundation for a computer checked construction of homology.
We discuss the homotopy type theory library in the Lean proof assistant. The library is especially geared toward synthetic homotopy theory. Of particular interest is the use of just a few primitive notions of higher inductive types, namely quotients and truncations, and the use of cubical methods.
We report on the development of the HoTT library, a formalization of homotopy type theory in the Coq proof assistant. It formalizes most of basic homotopy type theory, including univalence, higher inductive types, and significant amounts of synthetic homotopy theory, as well as category theory and modalities. The library has been used as a basis for several independent developments. We discuss the decisions that led to the design of the library, and we comment on the interaction of homotopy type theory with recently introduced features of Coq, such as universe polymorphism and private inductiv…
This paper continues investigations in "synthetic homotopy theory": the use of homotopy type theory to give machine-checked proofs of constructions from homotopy theory We present a mechanized proof of the Blakers-Massey connectivity theorem, a result relating the higher-dimensional homotopy groups of a pushout type (roughly, a space constructed by gluing two spaces along a shared subspace) to those of the components of the pushout. This theorem gives important information about the pushout type, and has a number of useful corollaries, including the Freudenthal suspension theorem, which has be…
In this paper, we present a directed homotopy type theory for reasoning synthetically about (higher) categories, directed homotopy theory, and its applications to concurrency. We specify a new `homomorphism' type former for Martin-Löf type theory which is roughly analogous to the identity type former originally introduced by Martin-Löf. The homomorphism type former is meant to capture the notions of morphism (from the theory of categories) and directed path (from directed homotopy theory) just as the identity type former is known to capture the notions of isomorphism (from the theory of groupo…
The goal of this dissertation is to present synthetic homotopy theory in the setting of homotopy type theory. We will present various results in this framework, most notably the construction of the Atiyah-Hirzebruch and Serre spectral sequences for cohomology, which have been fully formalized in the Lean proof assistant.
We define in the setting of homotopy type theory an H-space structure on $\mathbb S^3$. Hence we obtain a description of the quaternionic Hopf fibration $\mathbb S^3\hookrightarrow\mathbb S^7\twoheadrightarrow\mathbb S^4$, using only homotopy invariant tools.
