In this note, I describe an attempt to construct a phenomenological gravitational model at the boundary of the AdS manifold from the variation of boundary terms in the gravitational action. I find that for an AdS vacuum in the bulk, geometric constraints require that the energy-momentum tensor has constant trace.
We compute the vacuum energy for Kerr black holes with anti-de Sitter (AdS) asymptotics in dimensions $5\leq D\leq 9$ with all rotation parameters. The calculations are carried out employing an alternative regularization scheme for asymptotically AdS gravity, which considers supplementing the bulk action with counterterms which are a given polynomial in the extrinsic and intrinsic curvatures of the boundary (also known as Kounterterms). The Kerr-Schild form of the rotating solutions enables us to identify the vacuum energy as coming from the part of the metric that corresponds to global AdS sp…
It is shown that the notion of Conformal Mass can be defined within a given anti-de Sitter (AdS) branch of a Lovelock gravity theory as long as the corresponding vacuum is not degenerate. Indeed, conserved charges obtained by the addition of Kounterterms to the bulk action turn out to be proportional to the electric part of the Weyl tensor, when the fall-off of a generic solution in that AdS branch is considered. The factor of proportionality is the degeneracy condition for the vacua in the particular Lovelock AdS theory under study. This last feature explains the obstruction to define Conform…
We show that a scalar field conformally coupled to AdS gravity in four dimensions with a quartic self-interaction can be embedded into M-theory. The holographic effective potential is exactly calculated, allowing us to study non-perturbatively the stability of AdS_4 in the presence of the conformally coupled scalar. It is shown that there exists a one-parameter family of conformal scalar boundary conditions for which the boundary theory has an unstable vacuum. In this case, the bulk theory has instanton solutions that mediate the decay of the AdS_4 space. These results match nicely with the va…
Several time dependent backgrounds, with perfect fluid matter, can be used to construct solutions of Einstein equations in the presence of a negative cosmological constant along with some matter sources. In this work we focus on the non-vacuum Kasner-AdS geometry and its solitonic generalization. To characterize these space-times, we provide ways to embed them in higher dimensional flat space-times. General space-like geodesics are then studied and used to compute the two point boundary correlators within the geodesic approximation.
The greybody factors for spin 1/2 particles in the BTZ black holes are discussed from 2D CFT in bulk-boundary correspondence. It is found that the initial state of spin 1/2 particle in the BTZ black holes can be described by the Poincaré vacuum state in boundary 2D CFT, and the nonlinear coordinate transformation causes the thermalization of the Poincaré vacuum state. For special case, our results for the greybody factors agree with the semiclassical calculation.
We study the near horizon limit of a four dimensional extreme rotating black hole. The limiting metric is a completely nonsingular vacuum solution, with an enhanced symmetry group SL(2,R) x U(1). We show that many of the properties of this solution are similar to the AdS_2 x S^2 geometry arising in the near horizon limit of extreme charged black holes. In particular, the boundary at infinity is a timelike surface. This suggests the possibility of a dual quantum mechanical description. A five dimensional generalization is also discussed.
A finite action principle for Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet AdS gravity is presented. The boundary term, which is different for even and odd dimensions, is a functional of the boundary metric, intrinsic curvature and extrinsic curvature. For even dimensions, the boundary term corresponds to the maximal Chern form of the spacetime, and the asymptotic AdS condition for the curvature suffices for the well-posedness of this action. For odd dimensions, the action is stationary under a boundary condition on the variation of the extrinsic curvature. The background-independent Noether charges associated to as…
This paper studies a recently proposed relation between the emergence of bulk locality in AdS/CFT and the theory of quantum error correction. We show that if this relation is indeed realized in AdS/CFT, then bulk covariance is broken in the semi-classical limit.
We investigate topological effects of a cosmic string and compactification of a spatial dimension on the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the energy-momentum tensor for a fermionic field in (4+1)-dimensional locally AdS spacetime. The contribution induced by the compactification is explicitly extracted by using the Abel-Plana summation formula. The mean energy-momentum tensor is diagonal and the vacuum stresses along the direction perpendicular to the AdS boundary and along the cosmic string are equal to the energy density. All the components are even periodic functions of the magnetic fluxes…
Using AdS/CFT prescription, we compute two point Yang-Mills correlator on a constant time slice for the Kasner background. Pushing the surface close to the initial singularity, we find, in some cases, the correlator does not develop pole. This is consistent with the observations made in a recent work. We further numerically calculate similar correlator where the bulk is a Kasner AdS soliton. We find that the qualitative behaviour of the correlator remains unchanged.
We investigate the Wightman function, the mean field squared and the vacuum expectation values of energy-momentum tensor for a scalar field in AdS spacetime, in the presence of a brane perpendicular to the AdS boundary. On the brane the field operator obeys Robin boundary condition. The vacuum expectation values are decomposed into the boundary-free AdS and brane-induced contributions. In this way, for points away from the brane, the renormalization is reduced to the one in pure AdS spacetime. It is shown that at proper distances from the brane larger than the AdS curvature radius the brane-in…
The greybody factors in BTZ black holes are evaluated from 2D CFT in the spirit of AdS$_3$/CFT correspondence. The initial state of black holes in the usual calculation of greybody factors by effective CFT is described as Poincaré vacuum state in 2D CFT. The normalization factor which cannot be fixed in the effective CFT without appealing to string theory is shown to be determined by the normalized bulk-to-boundary Green function. The relation among the greybody factors in different dimensional black holes is exhibited. Two kinds of $(h,{\bar h})=(1,1)$ operators which couple with the boundary…
We investigate the combined effects of a magnetic flux-carrying cosmic string and a brane on the fermionic condensate (FC) and on the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the energy-momentum tensor for a massive charged fermionic field in background of 5-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime. The brane is parallel to the AdS boundary and it divides the space into two regions with distinct properties of the fermionic vacuum. For two types of boundary conditions on the field operator and for the fields realizing two inequivalent representations of the Clifford algebra, the brane-induced contri…
We study the thermodynamics and the phase structures of Reissner-Nordstrom and Born-Infeld black holes in AdS space by constructing ``off-shell'' free energies using thermodynamic quantities derived directly from the action. We then use these results to propose ``off-shell'' effective potentials for the respective boundary gauge theories. The saddle points of the potentials describe all the equilibrium phases of the gauge theories.
It is commonly believed that small black holes in AdS_5 x S^5 can be described by the ten dimensional Schwarzschild solution. This requires that the self-dual five-form (which is nonzero in the background) does not fall through the horizon and cause the black hole to grow. We verify that this is indeed the case: There are static solutions to the five-form field equations in a ten dimensional Schwarzschild spacetime. Similar results hold for other backgrounds AdS_p x S^q of interest in supergravity.
We find a simple relation between the first subleading terms in the asymptotic expansion of the metric field in AdS$_3$, obeying the Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions, and the stress tensor of the underlying Liouville theory on the boundary. We can also provide an more explicit relation between the bulk metric and the boundary conformal field theory when it is described in terms of a free field with a background charge.
We consider vacuum solutions of four dimensional general relativity with $Λ< 0$. We numerically construct stationary solutions that asymptotically approach a boundary metric with differential rotation. Smooth solutions only exist up to a critical rotation. We thus argue that increasing the differential rotation by a finite amount will cause the curvature to grow without bound. This holds for both zero and nonzero temperature, and both compact and noncompact boundaries. However, the boundary metric always develops an ergoregion before reaching the critical rotation, which probably means that th…
For charged black hole, within the grand canonical ensemble, the decay rate from thermal AdS to the black hole at a fixed high temperature increases with the chemical potential. We check that this feature is well captured by a phenomenological matrix model expected to describe its strongly coupled dual. This comparison is made by explicitly constructing the kink and bounce solutions around the de-confinement transition and evaluating the matrix model effective potential on the solutions.
We extend the study of time-dependent backgrounds in the AdS/CFT correspondence by examining the relation between bulk and boundary for the smooth 'bubble of nothing' solution and for the locally AdS black hole which has the same asymptotic geometry. These solutions are asymptotically locally AdS, with a conformal boundary conformal to de Sitter space cross a circle. We study the cosmological horizons and relate their thermodynamics in the bulk and boundary. We consider the alpha-vacuum ambiguity associated with the de Sitter space, and find that only the Euclidean vacuum is well-defined on th…
We study the collision of two Reissner-Nordström gravitational shock waves in AdS and show that the charge completely prevents the formation of marginally trapped surfaces of the Penrose type with topology S^(D-2), independently of the energy and the value of the impact parameter. In the case of head-on collisions, a numerical analysis shows that no trapped surfaces with topology S^1 \times S^(D-3) form either.
We re-examine vacuum polarisation of a scalar field in a quasi-local volume including the horizon. We find that Hawking radiation rate is derived as a pure decay of vacuum due to scalar field interaction with classical gravity exactly in the same way as the origin of vacuum polarisation effect in Electrodynamics.
In order to better understand how AdS holography works for sub-regions, we formulate a holographic version of the Reeh-Schlieder theorem for the simple case of an AdS Klein-Gordon field. This theorem asserts that the set of states constructed by acting on a suitable vacuum state with boundary observables contained within any subset of the boundary is dense in the Hilbert space of the bulk theory. To prove this theorem we need two ingredients which are themselves of interest. First, we prove a purely bulk version of Reeh-Schlieder theorem for an AdS Klein-Gordon field. This theorem relies on th…
The stability of certain class of asymptotically AdS wormholes in vacuum against scalar field perturbations is analyzed. For a free massive scalar field, the stability of the perturbation is guaranteed provided the squared mass is bounded from below by a negative quantity. Depending on the base manifold of the AdS asymptotics, this lower bound could be more stringent than the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound. An exact expression for the spectrum is found analytically. For a scalar field perturbation with a nonminimal coupling, slow fall-off asymptotic behavior is also allowed, provided the squared…
We consider general-symmetry higher spin fields in AdS_5 and derive expressions for their one-loop corrections to vacuum energy E and the associated 4d boundary conformal anomaly a-coefficient. We a propose a similar expression for the second conformal anomaly c-coefficient. We show that all the three quantities (E, a, c) computed for N=8 gauged 5d supergravity are -1/2 of the values for N=4 conformal 4d supergravity and also twice the values for N=4 Maxwell multiplet. This gives 5d derivation of the fact that the system of N=4 conformal supergravity and four N=4 Maxwell multiplets is anomaly …
We initiate a study of cosmology within the framework of Maldacena's AdS/CFT correspondence. We present a comprehensive analysis of the classical motion of a charged domain wall that separates an external Reissner-Nordstrom region of spacetime (with small or vanishing cosmological constant) from an internal de-Sitter region. The possible associated spacetime diagrams are drawn, although in the classical case, an unambiguous prediction of what occurs at late times in the interior region is not possible, since singularities and Cauchy horizons form. We argue that, when the asymptotic region is a…
We study the motion of thin-shell bubbles and their tunneling in anti de Sitter (AdS) background. We are interested in the case when the outside of a shell is a Schwarzschild-AdS space (false vacuum) and the inside of it is an AdS space with a lower vacuum energy (true vacuum). If a collapsing true vacuum bubble is created, classically it will form a Schwarzschild-AdS black hole. However, this collapsing bubble can tunnel to a bouncing bubble that moves out to spatial infinity. Then, although the classical causal structure of a collapsing true vacuum bubble has the singularity and the event ho…
It is well known that a weakly coupled U(N) gauge theory on a torus with sides of length L has extra light states with energies of order 1/NL. We show that a similar result holds for gauge theories on M/G where M is any compact Riemannian manifold and G is any freely acting discrete isometry group. As in the toroidal case, this is achieved by adding a suitable nontrivial flat connection. As one application, we consider the AdS/CFT correspondence on spacetimes asymptotic to AdS_5/G. By considering finite size effects at nonzero temperature, we show that consistency requires these extra light st…
This short note is devoted to the Hamiltonian analysis of the normalized general relativity and recently proposed model of vacuum energy sequestering. The common property of these models is the presence of the global variables. We discuss the meaning of these global variables in the context of the canonical formalism and argue that their presence lead to the non-local form of the Hamiltonian constraint.
We investigate the effects of a brane and magnetic-flux-carrying cosmic string on the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the current density for a charged fermionic field in the background geometry of 4+1 dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime. The brane is parallel to the AdS boundary and the cosmic string is orthogonal to the brane. Two types of boundary conditions are considered on the brane that include the MIT bag boundary condition and the boundary conditions in Z2-symmetric braneworld models. The brane divides the space into two regions with different properties of the vacuum state. …
We review the results of investigations for brane-induced effects on the local properties of quantum vacuum in background of AdS spacetime. Two geometries are considered: a brane parallel to the AdS boundary and a brane intersecting the AdS boundary. For both these cases the contribution in the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the energy-momentum tensor is separated explicitly and its behavior in various asymptotic regions of the parameters is studied. It is shown that the influence of the gravitational field on the local properties of the quantum vacuum is essential at distance from the bran…
We revisit two-point function approaches used to study vacuum fluctuation in wedge-shaped regions and conical backgrounds. Appearance of divergent integrals is discussed and circumvented. The issue is considered in the context of a massless scalar field in cosmic string spacetime.
Phase transitions for rotating asymptotically anti-de Sitter black holes in four dimensions are described in the $P-T$ plane, in terms of the Hawking temperature and the pressure provided by the cosmological constant. The difference between constant angular momentum and constant angular velocity is highlighted, the former has a second order phase transition while the latter does not. If the angular momentum is fixed there a line of first order phase transitions terminating at a critical point with a second order phase transition and vanishing latent heat, while if the angular velocity is fixed…
The super-entropic black hole, which possesses a noncompact horizon topology and violates the reverse isoperimetric inequality, has been found to satisfy both the thermodynamic first law and the Bekenstein-Smarr mass formula. In this paper, we first derive a new Christodoulou-Ruffini-like squared-mass formula for the four-dimensional Kerr-Newman-AdS super-entropic black hole, and then establish a set of very simple relations between thermodynamic quantities of the super-entropic Kerr-Newman-AdS$_4$ black hole and its usual counterparts. Using these relations, the thermodynamic quantities of th…
We propose a simple model of spacetime vacuum fluctuations motivated by AdS/CFT, where the vacuum is described by a thermal density matrix, $ρ= \frac{e^{-K}}{\mbox{Tr}(e^{-K})}$ with $K$ the modular Hamiltonian. In AdS/CFT, both the expectation value of $K$ and its fluctuations $\langle ΔK^2 \rangle$ have been calculated; both obey an area law identical to the Bekenstein-Hawking area law of black hole mechanics: $\langle K \rangle = \langle ΔK^2 \rangle = \frac{A}{4 G_N}$, where $A$ is the area of an (extremal) entangling surface. It has also been shown that $ΔK$ gravitates in AdS, and hence g…
As with any black hole, asymptotically anti-de Sitter Kerr black holes are described by a small number of parameters, including a "mass parameter" $M$ that reduces to the AdS-Schwarzschild mass in the limit of vanishing angular momentum. In sharp contrast to the asymptotically flat case, the horizon area of such a black hole increases with the angular momentum parameter $a$ if one fixes $M$, this appears to mean that the Penrose process in this case would violate the Second Law of black hole thermodynamics. We show that the correct procedure is to fix not $M$ but rather the "physical" mass $E=…
We use the AdS/CFT correspondence to discuss the response of an accelerated observer to the quantum vacuum fluctuations. In particular, we study heavy quarks probing a strongly coupled CFT by analysing strings moving in AdS. We propose that, in this context, a non-trivial detection rate is associated to the existence of a worldsheet horizon and we find an Unruh-like expression for the worldsheet temperature. Finally, by examining a rotating string in global AdS we find that there is a transition between string embeddings with and without worldsheet horizon. The dual picture corresponds to havi…
By applying Newman's method, the AdS_3 rotating black hole solution is "derived" from the nonrotating black hole solution of Banados, Teitelboim and Zanelli (BTZ). The rotating BTZ solution derived in this fashion is given in "Boyer-Lindquist-type" coordinates whereas the form of the solution originally given by BTZ is given in a kind of an "unfamiliar" coordinates which are related to each other by a transformation of time coordinate alone. The relative physical meaning between these two coordinates is carefully studied by evaluating angular momentum per unit mass, angular velocity, surface g…
If the Hamiltonian of a quantum field theory is taken to be a timelike isometry, the vacuum state remains empty for all time. We search for such stationary vacua in anti-de Sitter space. By considering conjugacy classes of the Lorentz group, we find interesting one-parameter families of stationary vacua in three-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. In particular, there exists a family of rotating Rindler vacua, labeled by the rotation parameter beta, which are related to the usual Rindler vacuum by non-trivial Bogolubov transformations. Rotating Rindler-AdS space possesses not only an observer-de…
A geometric torsion dynamics leading to an effective curvature in a second order formalism on a D4-brane is revisited with a renewed interest. We obtain two effective $AdS_4$ brane geometries on a vacuum created pair of $(D{\bar D})_3$-brane. One of them is shown to describe an AdS Schwarzschild spinning black hole and the other is shown to describe a spinning black hole bound state. It is argued that a D-instanton in a vacuum created anti D3-brane within a pair may describe a quintessence. It may seen to incorporate a varying vacuum energy density in a brane universe. We consider the effectiv…
In this thesis, we explore the possibility to define black hole mass in terms of the Weyl tensor for the entire family of Lovelock-AdS gravity theories. The level of degeneracy $k$ of the corresponding vacuum fixes the number of curvatures that should appear in the energy formula. Therefore, the charge expression which is a polynomial of maximal degree in the curvature, can be consistently truncated to an order $k$ in the Weyl tensor. In particular, for the maximally degenerate case in odd dimensions (Chern-Simons AdS) the expression identically vanishes and the mass must come from the formula…
Branes with constant mean curvature of their hyper-worldsheets of codim 1 are treated as the Nambu-Goldstone fields of the broken Poincare symmetry. Mapping of their action into quadratic curvature gravity action with spontaneously generated gravity, is shown. Equation for the brane potential extremals and its solution describing hyper-ws of constant curvature are found. For membranes in $\mathbf{R}^{1,3}$ this extremum is shown to be a saddle 3-dim. hypersurface which defines classically unstable vacuum.
Recent developments in string compactifications demonstrate obstructions to the simplest constructions of low energy cosmologies with positive vacuum energy. The existence of obstacles to creating scale-separated de Sitter solutions indicates a UV/IR puzzle for embedding cosmological vacua in a unitary theory of quantum gravity. Motivated by this puzzle, we propose an embedding of positive energy Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker cosmology within string theory. Our proposal involves confining 4D gravity on a brane which mediates the decay from a non-supersymmetric false AdS5 vacuum to a true…
We prove a positive volume theorem for asymptotically AdS spacetimes: the maximal volume slice has nonnegative vacuum-subtracted volume, and the vacuum-subtracted volume vanishes if and only if the spacetime is identically pure AdS. Under the Complexity=Volume proposal, this constitutes a positive holographic complexity theorem. The result features a number of parallels with the positive energy theorem, including the assumption of an energy condition that excludes false vacuum decay (the AdS weak energy condition). Our proof is rigorously established in broad generality in four bulk dimensions…
We construct a series of new hyperbolic black hole solutions in Einstein-Scalar system and we apply holographic approach to investigate the spherical Rényi entropy in various deformations of dual conformal field theories (CFTs). Especially, we introduce various powers of scalars in the scalar potentials for massive and massless scalar. These scalar potentials correspond to deformation of dual CFTs. Then we solve asymptotically hyperbolic AdS black hole solutions numerically. We map the instabilities of these black hole solutions to phase transitions of field theory in terms of CHM mapping betw…
In a recent paper [J. P. M. Pitelli, Phys. Rev. D {\bf 99}, 108701 (2019)], one of us showed that the vacuum state associated to conformal fields on a Poicaré patch of anti-de Sitter spacetime is not $\text{AdS}$ invariant for fields satisfying non-trivial boundary conditions (by non-trivial we mean neither Dirichlet nor Neumann) at the conformal boundary. In this way, two isometrically related observers in anti-de Sitter space have different notions of no particle content. Therefore, an observer who is suddenly transported to a different (but isometrically related) frame will feel a bath of p…
We present a refinement of a recently found gauge-gravity relation between one-loop effective actions: on the gauge side, for a massive charged scalar in 2d dimensions in a constant maximally symmetric electromagnetic field; on the gravity side, for a massive spinor in d-dimensional (Euclidean) anti-de Sitter space. The inclusion of the dimensionally regularized volume of AdS leads to complete mapping within dimensional regularization. In even-dimensional AdS, we get a small correction to the original proposal; whereas in odd-dimensional AdS, the mapping is totally new and subtle, with the `ho…
This PhD thesis is devoted to the study of supersymmetry preserving background solutions of N=2 supergravity in 4 dimensions. The main contents are divided into three major parts, briefly summarized as follows. Part I deals with analysis of maximally supersymmetric configurations. Part II discusses BPS black holes with Minkowski and anti-de Sitter (AdS) asymptotics. The main topics in part III are superalgebras, BPS bounds and conserved charges for asymptotically flat or AdS spacetimes. Most of the chapters are based on previously published results with the exception of chapter 10 in part III,…
For a massive scalar field with general curvature coupling we evaluate the Wightman function in the geometry of two parallel branes perpendicular to the AdS boundary. On the separate branes, the field operator is constrained by Robin boundary conditions, in general, with different coefficients. In the region between the branes their contribution to the Wightman function is explicitly separated. By using this decomposition, the brane-induced effects on the vacuum expectation values (VEVs) for the field squared and energy-momentum tensor are investigated. The behavior of those expectation values…
We find a class of (2+1)-dimensional spacetimes admitting Killing spinors appropriate to (2,0) adS-supergravity. The vacuum spacetimes include anti-de Sitter (adS) space and charged extreme black holes, but there are many others, including spacetimes of arbitrarily large negative energy that have only conical singularities, and the spacetimes of fractionally charged point particles. The non-vacuum spacetimes are those of self-gravitating solitons obtained by coupling (2,0) adS supergravity to sigma-model matter. We show, subject to a condition on the matter currents (satisfied by the sigma mod…
The two-point function and VEV of the current density are investigated for a massive charged scalar field with arbitrary curvature coupling in the geometry of a brane on background of AdS spacetime with partial toroidal compactification. The presence of a gauge field flux enclosed by compact dimensions is assumed. On the brane the field obeys Robin boundary condition and along compact dimensions periodicity conditions with general phases are imposed. There is a range in the space of values for the coefficient in the boundary condition where Poincare vacuum is unstable. This range depends on the br…
Wightman function and vacuum expectation value of the field square are evaluated for a massive scalar field with general curvature coupling parameter subject to Robin boundary conditions on two codimension one parallel branes located on $(D+1)$-dimensional background spacetime $AdS_{D_1+1}\times Σ$ with a warped internal space $Σ$. The general case of different Robin coefficients on separate branes is considered. The application of the generalized Abel-Plana formula for the series over zeros of combinations of cylinder functions allows us to extract manifestly the part due to the bulk without …
In order for string theory to be made compatible with the low-energy observations of a positive cosmological constant, there have been attempts to construct dS vacua in string theory which are particularly difficult to realize. Instead of attempting to find de Sitter (dS) vacuum solutions, we point to a new way to make string theory consistent with low-energy dS cosmology. In this way, string theory lives in an anti-de Sitter (AdS) vacuum (which is simple to construct) that exists only in the high-energy regime; however, as going to the low-energy scales where the heavy string excitations and …
