In the paper we construct a fully convolutional GAN model: LocoGAN, which latent space is given by noise-like images of possibly different resolutions. The learning is local, i.e. we process not the whole noise-like image, but the sub-images of a fixed size. As a consequence LocoGAN can produce images of arbitrary dimensions e.g. LSUN bedroom data set. Another advantage of our approach comes from the fact that we use the position channels, which allows the generation of fully periodic (e.g. cylindrical panoramic images) or almost periodic ,,infinitely long" images (e.g. wall-papers).
Most existing methods view makeup transfer as transferring color distributions of different facial regions and ignore details such as eye shadows and blushes. Besides, they only achieve controllable transfer within predefined fixed regions. This paper emphasizes the transfer of makeup details and steps towards more flexible controls. To this end, we propose Exquisite and locally editable GAN for makeup transfer (EleGANt). It encodes facial attributes into pyramidal feature maps to preserves high-frequency information. It uses attention to extract makeup features from the reference and adapt th…
Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) based localized image editing can suffer from ambiguity between semantic attributes. We thus present a novel objective function to evaluate the locality of an image edit. By introducing the supervision from a pre-trained segmentation network and optimizing the objective function, our framework, called Locally Effective Latent Space Direction (LELSD), is applicable to any dataset and GAN architecture. Our method is also computationally fast and exhibits a high extent of disentanglement, which allows users to interactively perform a sequence of edits on an im…
Despite an impressive performance from the latest GAN for generating hyper-realistic images, GAN discriminators have difficulty evaluating the quality of an individual generated sample. This is because the task of evaluating the quality of a generated image differs from deciding if an image is real or fake. A generated image could be perfect except in a single area but still be detected as fake. Instead, we propose a novel approach for detecting where errors occur within a generated image. By collaging real images with generated images, we compute for each pixel, whether it belongs to the real…

Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have made great success in synthesizing high-quality images. However, how to steer the generation process of a well-trained GAN model and customize the output image is much less explored. It has been recently found that modulating the input latent code used in GANs can reasonably alter some variation factors in the output image, but such manipulation usually presents to change the entire image as a whole. In this work, we propose an effective approach, termed as LoGAN, to support local editing of the output image. Concretely, we introduce two operators, i…
To edit a real photo using Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), we need a GAN inversion algorithm to identify the latent vector that perfectly reproduces it. Unfortunately, whereas existing inversion algorithms can synthesize images similar to real photos, they cannot generate the identical clones needed in most applications. Here, we derive an algorithm that achieves near perfect reconstructions of photos. Rather than relying on encoder- or optimization-based methods to find an inverse mapping on a fixed generator $G(\cdot)$, we derive an approach to locally adjust $G(\cdot)$ to more optim…

In this paper, we present a novel localized Generative Adversarial Net (GAN) to learn on the manifold of real data. Compared with the classic GAN that {\em globally} parameterizes a manifold, the Localized GAN (LGAN) uses local coordinate charts to parameterize distinct local geometry of how data points can transform at different locations on the manifold. Specifically, around each point there exists a {\em local} generator that can produce data following diverse patterns of transformations on the manifold. The locality nature of LGAN enables local generators to adapt to and directly access th…
Generative adversarial network (GAN) has gotten wide re-search interest in the field of deep learning. Variations of GAN have achieved competitive results on specific tasks. However, the stability of training and diversity of generated instances are still worth studying further. Training of GAN can be thought of as a greedy procedure, in which the generative net tries to make the locally optimal choice (minimizing loss function of discriminator) in each iteration. Unfortunately, this often makes generated data resemble only a few modes of real data and rotate between modes. To alleviate these …
Deep Learning-based image synthesis techniques have been applied in healthcare research for generating medical images to support open research. Training generative adversarial neural networks (GAN) usually requires large amounts of training data. Federated learning (FL) provides a way of training a central model using distributed data from different medical institutions while keeping raw data locally. However, FL is vulnerable to backdoor attack, an adversarial by poisoning training data, given the central server cannot access the original data directly. Most backdoor attack strategies focus o…

Learning a disentangled representation of the latent space has become one of the most fundamental problems studied in computer vision. Recently, many Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have shown promising results in generating high fidelity images. However, studies to understand the semantic layout of the latent space of pre-trained models are still limited. Several works train conditional GANs to generate faces with required semantic attributes. Unfortunately, in these attempts, the generated output is often not as photo-realistic as the unconditional state-of-the-art models. Besides, th…
Recently the Generative Adversarial Network has become a hot topic. Considering the application of GAN in multi-user environment, we propose Distributed-GAN. It enables multiple users to train with their own data locally and generates more diverse samples. Users don't need to share data with each other to avoid the leakage of privacy. In recent years, commercial companies have launched cloud platforms based on artificial intelligence to provide model for users who lack computing power. We hope our work can inspire these companies to provide more powerful AI services.

We deconstruct the performance of GANs into three components: 1. Formulation: we propose a perturbation view of the population target of GANs. Building on this interpretation, we show that GANs can be viewed as a generalization of the robust statistics framework, and propose a novel GAN architecture, termed as Cascade GANs, to provably recover meaningful low-dimensional generator approximations when the real distribution is high-dimensional and corrupted by outliers. 2. Generalization: given a population target of GANs, we design a systematic principle, projection under admissible distance, to…

Sensitive medical data is often subject to strict usage constraints. In this paper, we trained a generative adversarial network (GAN) on real-world electronic health records (EHR). It was then used to create a data-set of "fake" patients through synthetic data generation (SDG) to circumvent usage constraints. This real-world data was tabular, binary, intensive care unit (ICU) patient diagnosis data. The entire data-set was split into separate data silos to mimic real-world scenarios where multiple ICU units across different hospitals may have similarly structured data-sets within their own org…
Audio signals are sampled at high temporal resolutions, and learning to synthesize audio requires capturing structure across a range of timescales. Generative adversarial networks (GANs) have seen wide success at generating images that are both locally and globally coherent, but they have seen little application to audio generation. In this paper we introduce WaveGAN, a first attempt at applying GANs to unsupervised synthesis of raw-waveform audio. WaveGAN is capable of synthesizing one second slices of audio waveforms with global coherence, suitable for sound effect generation. Our experiment…

Single image super-resolution (SISR) with generative adversarial networks (GAN) has recently attracted increasing attention due to its potentials to generate rich details. However, the training of GAN is unstable, and it often introduces many perceptually unpleasant artifacts along with the generated details. In this paper, we demonstrate that it is possible to train a GAN-based SISR model which can stably generate perceptually realistic details while inhibiting visual artifacts. Based on the observation that the local statistics (e.g., residual variance) of artifact areas are often different …

Recently, AutoRegressive (AR) models for the whole image generation empowered by transformers have achieved comparable or even better performance to Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). Unfortunately, directly applying such AR models to edit/change local image regions, may suffer from the problems of missing global information, slow inference speed, and information leakage of local guidance. To address these limitations, we propose a novel model -- image Local Autoregressive Transformer (iLAT), to better facilitate the locally guided image synthesis. Our iLAT learns the novel local discrete…

Face aging is of great importance for cross-age recognition and entertainment-related applications. Recently, conditional generative adversarial networks (cGANs) have achieved impressive results for face aging. Existing cGANs-based methods usually require a pixel-wise loss to keep the identity and background consistent. However, minimizing the pixel-wise loss between the input and synthesized images likely resulting in a ghosted or blurry face. To address this deficiency, this paper introduces an Attention Conditional GANs (AcGANs) approach for face aging, which utilizes attention mechanism to…

Deep Learning has recently become hugely popular in machine learning, providing significant improvements in classification accuracy in the presence of highly-structured and large databases. Researchers have also considered privacy implications of deep learning. Models are typically trained in a centralized manner with all the data being processed by the same training algorithm. If the data is a collection of users' private data, including habits, personal pictures, geographical positions, interests, and more, the centralized server will have access to sensitive information that could potential…

Using a large-scale, experimentally captured 3D microstructure dataset, we implement the generative adversarial network (GAN) framework to learn and generate 3D microstructures of solid oxide fuel cell electrodes. The generated microstructures are visually, statistically, and topologically realistic, with distributions of microstructural parameters, including volume fraction, particle size, surface area, tortuosity, and triple phase boundary density, being highly similar to those of the original microstructure. These results are compared and contrasted with those from an established, grain-bas…

In this short report, we present a simple, yet effective approach to editing real images via generative adversarial networks (GAN). Unlike previous techniques, that treat all editing tasks as an operation that affects pixel values in the entire image in our approach we cut up the image into a set of smaller segments. For those segments corresponding latent codes of a generative network can be estimated with greater accuracy due to the lower number of constraints. When codes are altered by the user the content in the image is manipulated locally while the rest of it remains unaffected. Thanks t…

Among the major remaining challenges for generative adversarial networks (GANs) is the capacity to synthesize globally and locally coherent images with object shapes and textures indistinguishable from real images. To target this issue we propose an alternative U-Net based discriminator architecture, borrowing the insights from the segmentation literature. The proposed U-Net based architecture allows to provide detailed per-pixel feedback to the generator while maintaining the global coherence of synthesized images, by providing the global image feedback as well. Empowered by the per-pixel res…

In recent years, text-guided image manipulation has gained increasing attention in the multimedia and computer vision community. The input to conditional image generation has evolved from image-only to multimodality. In this paper, we study a setting that allows users to edit an image with multiple objects using complex text instructions to add, remove, or change the objects. The inputs of the task are multimodal including (1) a reference image and (2) an instruction in natural language that describes desired modifications to the image. We propose a GAN-based method to tackle this problem. The…
Conditional Generative Adversarial Nets (CGANs) need a significantly huge dataset with a detailed pixel-wise annotation to generate high-quality images. Unfortunately, any amount of missing pixel annotations may significantly impact the result not only locally, but also in annotated areas. To the best of our knowledge, such a challenge has never been investigated in the broader field of GANs. In this paper, we take the first step in this direction to study the problem of CGAN-based satellite image synthesis given partially annotated images. We first define the problem of image synthesis using …
We present a deep learning approach for high resolution face completion with multiple controllable attributes (e.g., male and smiling) under arbitrary masks. Face completion entails understanding both structural meaningfulness and appearance consistency locally and globally to fill in "holes" whose content do not appear elsewhere in an input image. It is a challenging task with the difficulty level increasing significantly with respect to high resolution, the complexity of "holes" and the controllable attributes of filled-in fragments. Our system addresses the challenges by learning a fully en…

Semantic communications has received growing interest since it can remarkably reduce the amount of data to be transmitted without missing critical information. Most existing works explore the semantic encoding and transmission for text and apply techniques in Natural Language Processing (NLP) to interpret the meaning of the text. In this paper, we conceive the semantic communications for image data that is much more richer in semantics and bandwidth sensitive. We propose an reinforcement learning based adaptive semantic coding (RL-ASC) approach that encodes images beyond pixel level. Firstly, …
