We investigate the statistics of the work performed during a quench across a quantum phase transition using the adiabatic perturbation theory. It is shown that all the cumulants of work exhibit universal scaling behavior analogous to the Kibble-Zurek scaling for the average density of defects. Two kinds of transformations are considered: quenches between two gapped phases in which a critical point is traversed, and quenches that end near the critical point. In contrast to the scaling behavior of the density of defects, the scaling behavior of the work cumulants are shown to be qualitatively different for these two kinds of quenches. However, in both cases the corresponding exponents are fully determined by the dimension of the system and the critical exponents of the transition, as in the traditional Kibble-Zurek mechanism (KZM). Thus, our study deepens our understanding about the nonequilibrium dynamics of a quantum phase transition by revealing the imprint of the KZM on the work statistics.
Many previous studies have demonstrated that work statistics can exhibit certain singular behaviors in the quantum critical regimes of many-body systems at zero or very low temperatures. However, as the temperature increases, it is commonly believed that such singularities will vanish. Contrary to this common recognition, we report a nonanalytic behavior of the averaged work done, which occurs at finite temperature, in the Dicke model as well as the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model subjected to the sudden quenches of their work parameters. It is revealed that work statistics can be viewed as a signa…
When a quantum phase transition is crossed in finite time, critical slowing down leads to the breakdown of adiabatic dynamics and the formation of topological defects. The average density of defects scales with the quench rate following a universal power-law predicted by the Kibble-Zurek mechanism. We analyze the full counting statistics of kinks and report the exact kink number distribution in the transverse-field quantum Ising model. Kink statistics is described by the Poisson binomial distribution with all cumulants exhibiting a universal power-law scaling with the quench rate. In the absen…
Clifford circuits are insufficient for universal quantum computation or creating $t$-designs with $t\ge 4$. While the entanglement entropy is not a telltale of this insufficiency, the entanglement spectrum is: the entanglement levels are Poisson-distributed for circuits restricted to the Clifford gate-set, while the levels follow Wigner-Dyson statistics when universal gates are used. In this paper we show, using finite-size scaling analysis of different measures of level spacing statistics, that in the thermodynamic limit, inserting a single T $(π/8)$ gate in the middle of a random Clifford ci…
The many-body localization transition (MBLT) between ergodic and many-body localized phase in disordered interacting systems is a subject of much recent interest. Statistics of eigenenergies is known to be a powerful probe of crossovers between ergodic and integrable systems in simpler examples of quantum chaos. We consider the evolution of the spectral statistics across the MBLT, starting with mapping to a Brownian motion process that analytically relates the spectral properties to the statistics of matrix elements. We demonstrate that the flow from Wigner-Dyson to Poisson statistics is a two…
The analysis of single-mode photon fluctuations and their counting statistics at the superradiant phase transition is presented. The study concerns the equilibrium Dicke model in a regime where the Rabi frequency, related to a coupling of the photon mode with a finite-number qubit environment, plays a role of the transition's control parameter. We use the effective Matsubara action formalism based on the representation of Pauli operators as bilinear forms with complex and Majorana fermions. Then, we address fluctuations of superradiant order parameter and quasiparticles. The average photon num…
We show that non-interacting disordered electrons on a Bethe lattice display a new intermediate phase which is delocalized but non-ergodic, i.e. it is characterized by Poisson instead of GOE statistics. The physical signature of this phase is a very heterogenous transport that proceeds over a few disorder dependent paths only. We show that the transition to the usual ergodic delocalized phase, which takes place for a disorder strength smaller than the one leading to the localization transition, is related to the freezing-glass transition of directed polymers in random media. The numerical stud…
We study the phenomena at the overlap of quantum chaos and nonclassical statistics for the time-dependent model of nonlinear oscillator. It is shown in the framework of Mandel Q-parameter and Wigner function that the statistics of oscillatory excitation number is drastically changed in order-to chaos transition. The essential improvement of sub-Poissonian statistics in comparison with an analogous one for the standard model of driven anharmonic oscillator is observed for the regular operational regime. It is shown that in the chaotic regime the system exhibits the range of sub- and super-Poiss…
When the interaction of a quantum system with a detector is changing from weak to strong coupling limits, the system experiences a transition from the regime with quantum mechanical coherent oscillations to the regime with a frozen dynamics. In addition to this quantum Zeno transition, we show that the full counting statistics of detector signal events experiences a topological phase transition at the boundary between two phases at intermediate coupling of a quantum system to the detector. We demonstrate that this transition belongs to the class of topological phase transitions that can be cla…
We consider the number distribution of topological defects resulting from the finite-time crossing of a continuous phase transition and identify signatures of universality beyond the mean value, predicted by the Kibble-Zurek mechanism. Statistics of defects follows a binomial distribution with $\mathcal{N}$ Bernouilli trials associated with the probability of forming a topological defect at the locations where multiple domains merge. All cumulants of the distribution are predicted to exhibit a common universal power-law scaling with the quench time in which the transition is crossed. Knowledge…
We consider a driven single mode Dicke-Hamiltonian coupled to a dissipative zero-temperature bath. We derive the cumulant generating function for emitted photons of this quantum-critical system by using a $P$-representation of the master equation in the thermodynamic limit. This cumulant generating function is shown to consist of two parts: a macroscopic component, which is Poissonian in nature with characteristic rate proportional to the order parameter of the system; and a part describing fluctuations which is non-trivial in form and divergent around the quantum phase transition.
The effects of the quantized electromagnetic fields on the spectral statistics of two-level atoms are considered. We have used the Berry- Robnik distribution and Maximum Likelihood estimation technique to analyze the effect of mean photon and two level atoms numbers and also the quantum number of considered states. Results suggest the intensity of electromagnetic fields as control parameter which the spectral statistics change due to its variation in the 0-1200 region. Also, we observed the universality in the spectral statistics of considered systems when the number of two level atoms is appr…
It is well-known that a quantum measurement can enhance the transition probability between two quantum states. Such a measurement operates after preparation of the initial state and before postselecting for the final state. Here we analyze this kind of scenario in detail and determine which probability distributions on a finite number of outcomes can occur for an intermediate measurement with postselection, for given values of the following two quantities: (i) the transition probability without measurement, (ii) the transition probability with measurement. This is done for both the cases of pr…
The level statistics in the transition between delocalized and localized {phases of} many body interacting systems is {considered}. We recall the joint probability distribution for eigenvalues resulting from the statistical mechanics for energy level dynamics as introduced by Pechukas and Yukawa. The resulting single parameter analytic distribution is probed numerically {via Monte Carlo method}. The resulting higher order spacing ratios are compared with data coming from different {quantum many body systems}. It is found that this Pechukas-Yukawa distribution compares favorably with {$β$--Gaus…
Photon statistics is one of the key properties of the photon state for the study of quantum coherence and quantum information techniques. Here, we discuss the photon indistinguishability induced bunching effect which can significantly change photon statistics. Through the measurement of the second-order degree of coherence of a mixed photon state composed of a single-photon state and a weak coherent state, the statistical transition from a classical behavior to a nonclassical behavior is experimentally demonstrated by modifying the indistinguishability of the two-photon states. The study will …
The conventional probabilistic point of view implies that if a particle has a probability $p$ to make a transition from one site to another site, then the average transport should be $<Q>=p}$ with a variance $Var(Q)=(1-p)p$. In the quantum mechanical context this observation becomes a non-trivial manifestation of restricted quantum-classical correspondence. We demonstrate this observation by considering the full counting statistics which is associated with a two level coherent transition in the context of a continuous quantum measurement process. In particular we test the possibility of gettin…
The fundamentals of Statistical Mechanics require a fresh definition in the context of the developments in Classical Mechanics of integrable and chaotic systems. This is done with the introduction of Micro Partitions ; a union of disjoint components in phase space. Partition functions including the invariants, Kolmogorov Entropy and Euler number are introduced. The ergodic hypothesis for partial ergodicity is discussed. In the context of Quantum Mechanics the presence of symmetry groups with irreducible representations gives rise to degenerate and non degenerate spectrum for the Hamiltonian. Q…
Anyons - particles carrying fractional statistics that interpolate between bosons and fermions - have been conjectured to exist in low dimensional systems. In the context of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE), quasi-particles made of electrons take the role of anyons whose statistical exchange phase is fixed by the filling factor. Here we propose an experimental setup to create anyons in one-dimensional lattices with fully tuneable exchange statistics. In our setup, anyons are created by bosons with occupation-dependent hopping amplitudes, which can be realized by assisted Raman tunneli…
Nanocavity lasers are commonly characterized by the spontaneous coupling coefficient $β$ that represents the fraction of photons emitted into the lasing mode. While $β$ is conventionally discussed in semiconductor lasers where the photon lifetime is much shorter than the carrier lifetime (class-B lasers), little is known about $β$ in atomic lasers where the photon lifetime is much longer than the other lifetimes and only the photon degree of freedom exists (class-A lasers). We investigate the impact of the spontaneous coupling coefficient $β$ on lasing properties in the class-A limit by extend…
Recent investigations on the Hamiltonian of excitons by F. Schweiner et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 118, 046401 (2017)] revealed that the combined presence of a cubic band structure and external fields breaks all antiunitary symmetries. The nearest neighbor spacing distribution of magnetoexcitons can exhibit Poissonian statistics, the statistics of a Gaussian orthogonal ensemble (GOE) or a Gaussian unitary ensemble (GUE) depending on the system parameters. Hence, magnetoexcitons are an ideal system to investigate the transitions between these statistics. Here we investigate the transitions between G…
We study a one-dimensional multicomponent anyon model that reduces to a multicomponent Lieb-Liniger gas of impenetrable bosons (Tonks-Girardeau gas) for vanishing statistics parameter. At fixed component densities, the coordinate Bethe ansatz gives a family of quantum phase transitions at special values of the statistics parameter. We show that the ground state energy changes extensively between different phases. Special regimes are studied and a general classification for the transition points is given. An interpretation in terms of statistics of composite particles is proposed.
