We investigate the axion like particle (ALP)-photon oscillation effect in the high energy $γ$-ray spectra of PG 1553+113 and PKS 2155-304 measured by Fermi-LAT and H.E.S.S.. The choice of extragalactic background light (EBL) model, which induces the attenuate effect in observed $γ$-ray spectra, would affect the ALP implication. For the ordinary EBL model that prefers a null hypothesis, we set constraint on the ALP-photon coupling constant at 95% C.L. as $g_{aγ}\lesssim 5\times 10^{-11} ~\rm{GeV}^{-1}$ for the ALP mass $\sim 10$ neV. We also consider the CIBER observation of the cosmic infrared radiation, which shows an excess at the wave wavelength of $\sim 1~μ$m after the substraction of foregrounds. The high energy gamma-rays from extragalactic sources at high redshifts would suffer from a more significant attenuate effect caused by this excess. In this case, we find that the ALP-photon oscillation would improve the fit to the observed spectra of PKS 2155-304 and PG 1553+113 and find a favored parameter region at 95% C.L..
The axion-like particle (ALP)-photon mixing in the magnetic field around $γ$-ray sources or along the line-of-sight could induce oscillation between photons and ALPs, which then causes irregularities in the $γ$-ray spectra. In this work we try to search for such spectral irregularities in the spectrum of PKS $2155-304$ using 8.6 years of the Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT) data. No significant evidence for the presence of ALP-photon oscillation is obtained, and the parameter space of ALPs is constrained. The exclusion region sensitively depends on the poorly known magnetic field of host…
Very high energy (VHE) gamma-rays undergo pair production with low energy photons of background radiation fields. This leads to an attenuation of the primary gamma-ray flux of extragalactic sources in the interaction with the extragalactic background light (EBL) which stretches from ultraviolet to far-infrared wavelengths. In the presence of magnetic fields, gamma-rays could oscillate into hypothetical axion-like particles (ALPs). This might lead to a reduced opacity of the Universe for VHE gamma-rays, as ALPs circumvent pair production. Here, the impact of photon-ALP conversions on the spectr…
Axion-like particles are hypothetical new light (sub-eV) bosons predicted in some extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics. In astrophysical environments comprising high-energy gamma rays and turbulent magnetic fields, the existence of axion-like particles can modify the energy spectrum of the gamma rays. This modification would take the form of an irregular behavior of the energy spectrum in a limited energy range. Data from the H.E.S.S. observations of the distant BL Lac PKS 2155-304 are used to derive conservative upper limits on the strength of the axion-like particle coupling …
Flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) are a particular class of blazars rich of optical/ultraviolet photons inside the broad line region (BLR), necessarily implying a huge optical depth for $γ$ rays above 20 GeV. As a consequence, photons with energy above such a threshold should not be emitted. However, photons in the energy range 70 - 400 GeV have been observed by MAGIC from the FSRQ PKS 1222+216. Several astrophysical explanations exist in the literature, but they are all ad hoc, namely devised only for that specific purpose. We show that such a surprising discovery can be explained within st…
The surprising discovery by MAGIC of an intense, rapidly varying emission in the energy range 70 - 400 GeV from the flat spectrum radio quasar PKS 1222+216 represents a challenge for all interpretative scenarios. Indeed, in order to avoid absorption of γrays in the dense ultraviolet radiation field of the broad line region (BLR), one is forced to invoke some unconventional astrophysical picture, like for instance the existence of a very compact (r\sim 10^{14} cm) emitting blob at a large distance (R \sim10^{18} cm) from the jet base. We offer the investigation of a scenario based on the standa…
Axion Like Particles (ALPs) are one promising kind of dark matter candidate particles that are predicted to couple with photons in the presence of magnetic fields. The oscillations between photons and ALPs travelling in the magnetic fields have been used to constrain ALP properties. In this work, we obtain some new constraints on the ALP mass $m_{\rm a}$ and the photon-ALP coupling constant $g$ with two different magnetic field models through TeV photons from PKS 2155-304. One is the discrete-$φ$ model that the magnetic field has the orientation angle $φ$ changes discretely and randomly from o…
Pseudoscalar particles like axion-like particles generically couple to two photons, giving rise to the possibility of oscillations with photons in an external magnetic field. These oscillations could lead to measurable imprints in the electromagnetic spectrum of astrophysical sources if the coupling to photons is strong enough. One possible signature is the presence of irregularities in a limited energy range of the spectrum. In this study, anomalous irregularities are searched for in the spectrum of the bright extragalactic TeV emitter PKS 2155-304 as measured by H.E.S.S. to put constraints o…
Photons may convert to axion-like particles (ALPs) in external magnetic fields. Under certain conditions, this effect should result in irregular features in observed spectra of astrophysical sources. Lack of such irregularities in particular spectra was used to constrain ALP parameters, with two most popular sources being the radio galaxy NGC 1275 and the blazar PKS 2155-304. The effect and, consequently, the constraints, depend on the magnetic fields through which the light from the source is propagated. Here, we revisit ALP constraints from gamma-ray observations of NGC 1275 taking into acco…
In this work, we re-analyze the Fermi-LAT observation of NGC 1275 to search for axion-like particle (ALP) effects and constrain ALP parameters. Instead of fitting the observed spectrum with ALP models, we adopt an alternative method for the analysis of this source which calculates the irregularity of the spectrum. With the newly used method, we find no spectral oscillation for the NGC 1275 and rule out couplings $g_{aγ}>3\times10^{-12}\,{\rm GeV^{-1}}$ around ALP mass of $m_a\sim$ 1 neV at 95\% confidence level, which is more stringent than the previous results. We also show that the constrain…
Very high energy gamma-ray observations of distant active galactic nuclei (AGN) generally result in higher fluxes and harder spectra than expected, resulting in some tension with the level of the extragalactic background light (EBL). If hypothetical axions or axion-like particles (ALPs) were to exist, this tension could be relieved since the oscillation of photons to ALPs would mitigate the effects of EBL absorption and lead to softer inferred intrinsic AGN spectra. In this paper we consider the effect of photon-ALP mixing on observed spectra, including the photon-ALP mixing that would occur w…
We report the $γ$-ray detection of a young radio galaxy, PKS 1718$-$649, belonging to the class of Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs), with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board the {\it Fermi} satellite. The third {\it Fermi} Gamma-ray LAT catalog (3FGL) includes an unassociated $γ$-ray source, 3FGL J1728.0$-$6446, located close to PKS 1718$-$649. Using the latest Pass 8 calibration, we confirm that the best fit $1 σ$ position of the $γ$-ray source is compatible with the radio location of PKS 1718$-$649. Cross-matching of the $γ$-ray source position with the positions of blazar sources from s…
PKS 2023-07 is a flat spectrum radio quasar located at a redshift $z=1.388$, farther than any source currently detected at very high energies ($E>100$ GeV). At such energies, absorption by the extragalactic background light (EBL) renders the detection of distant sources particularly challenging. The High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) observed the source following reports from AGILE (April 2016) and Fermi-LAT (April 2016, September and October 2017) on high-flux states in gamma rays. During each of the three flaring periods, near-simultaneous observations were obtained with H.E.S.S., Fe…
We report the discovery by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope of high-energy gamma-ray (GeV) emission from the flat-spectrum radio quasar PKS 1454-354 (z=1.424). On 4 September 2008 the source rose to a peak flux of (3.5 +/- 0.7)x 10^-6 ph cm^-2 s^-1 (E > 100 MeV) on a time scale of hours and then slowly dropped over the following two days. No significant spectral changes occurred during the flare. Fermi/LAT observations also showed that PKS 1454-354 is the most probable counterpart of the unidentified EGRET source 3EG J1500-3509. Multiwavelength measure…
A physical description of the formation and propagation of the working surface inside the relativistic jet of the Blazar PKS 1510-089 are used to model its gamma-ray variability light curve using FERMI-LAT data from 2008 to 2012. The physical model is based on conservation laws of mass and momentum at the working surface as explained by Mendoza et al. (2009). The hydrodynamical description of the working surface is parametrised by the initial velocity and mass injection rate at the base of the jet. We show that periodic variations on the injected velocity profiles are able to account for the o…
We examine the gamma-ray quasi-periodic variability of PKS 2155-304 with the latest publicly available \emph{Fermi}-LAT Pass 8 data which covers the years from 2008 August to 2016 October. We produce the light curves in two ways, i.e., the exposure-weighted aperture photometry and the maximum likelihood optimization. The light curves are then analyzed by using Lomb-Scargle Periodogram (LSP) and Weighted Wavelet Z-transform (WWZ); and the results reveal a significant quasi-periodicity with a period of $1.74\pm0.13$ years and a significance of $\sim$ 4.9 $σ$. The constraint of multifrequencies q…
PKS 1424+240 is a BL-Lac blazar with unknown redshift detected at high-energy gamma rays by Fermi-LAT with a hard spectrum. It was first detected at very-high-energy by VERITAS and latter confirmed by MAGIC. Attempts to find limits on its redshift include three estimations by modeling gamma-ray observations, and one obtained by analyzing Lyb and Lyg absorption lines observed in the far-UV spectra (from HST/COS) caused by absorbing gas along the line of sight. They allowed to constrain the redshift range to 0:6<z<1:19, which places PKS 1424+240 in the very interesting condition to be one of the…
A systematic search for cyclical sources of gamma-ray emission on the period range from days to years in the Fermi-LAT sky is performed. Looking for cyclical emission, the sky is binned into equal-area pixels and the generalised Lomb-Scargle periodogram is computed for each of these pixels. The search on the period range between 2.5 and 30 days in the Galactic plane confirms periodicities of three binaries, LSI +61 303, LS 5039, and 1FGL J1018.6-5856. The all-sky search on the period range between 30 days and 2.5 years confirms periodicities of three blazars, PG 1553+113, PKS 2155-304, and BL …
The blazar PKS~2155-304 was the target of a multiwavelength campaign from June to October 2013 which widely improves our knowledge of its spectral energy distribution. This campaign involved the NuSTAR satellite (3-79 keV), the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT, 100~MeV-300~GeV) and the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) array phase II (with an energy threshold of few tens of GeV). While the observations with NuSTAR extend the X-ray spectrum to higher energies than before, H.E.S.S. phase II, together with the use of the LAT PASS 8, enhance the coverage of the $γ$-ray regime with an unpre…
Here we report on the detailed analysis of the gamma-ray light curve of a luminous blazar PKS1510-089 observed in the GeV range with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi satellite during the period 2011 September -- December. By investigating the properties of the detected three major flares with the shortest possible time binning allowed by the photon statistics, we find a variety of temporal characteristics and variability patterns. This includes a clearly asymmetric profile (with a faster flux rise and a slower decay) of the flare resolved on sub-daily timescales, a superpositio…
We report the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) detection of two very-high-energy (VHE, E>100 GeV) gamma-ray photons from the directional vicinity of the distant (redshift, z = 1.1) blazar PKS 0426-380. The null hypothesis that both the 134 and 122 GeV photons originate from unrelated sources can be rejected at the 5.5 sigma confidence level. We therefore claim that at least one of the two VHE photons is securely associated with the blazar, making PKS 0426-380 the most distant VHE emitter known to date. The results are in agreement with the most recent Fermi-LAT constraints on the Extragalactic…
Recently, the IC/CMB X-ray mechanism has been strongly disfavoured for 3C 273 and PKS 0637-752 since the anomalously hard and steady gamma-ray emission predicted by such models violates the observational results from Fermi-LAT. Here we propose the proton synchrotron origin of the X ray-gamma ray flux from the knots of PKS 0637-752 with a reasonable budget in luminosity, by considering synchrotron radiation from an accelerated proton population. Moreover, for the source 3C 273, some of the optical data points could not be explained by electron synchrotron (Meyer et al. 2015), which we have incl…
Axionlike particles (ALPs) are hypothetical light (sub-eV) bosons predicted in some extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics. In astrophysical environments comprising high-energy gamma rays and turbulent magnetic fields, the existence of ALPs can modify the energy spectrum of the gamma rays for a sufficiently large coupling between ALPs and photons. This modification would take the form of an irregular behavior of the energy spectrum in a limited energy range. Data from the H.E.S.S. observations of the distant BL Lac object PKS 2155-304 (z = 0.116) are used to derive upper limits a…
We have reanalyzed the giant outburst of the blazar PKS 1510-089 (z=0.36) that occurred on 2011 October-November. The gamma-ray flux in the 0.1-100 GeV energy range exceeded the value of 10^-5 ph/cm2/s for several days. The peak flux was reached on 2011 October 19, with a value of 4.4 x 10^-5 ph/cm2/s, which in turn corresponds to a luminosity of 2 x 10^49 erg/s. A very short timescale variability was measured. Particularly on 2011 October 18, the flux-doubling time was as short as 20 minutes. This is the shortest variability ever detected in the MeV-GeV energy band. We compared our analysis w…
The detection of periodicities in light curves of active galacticnuclei (AGN) could have profound consequences for our understanding of the nature and radiation physics of these objects. At high energies (HE; E>100 MeV) 5 blazars (PG 1553+113,PKS 2155-304, 0426-380, 0537-441, 0301-243) have been reported to show year-like quasi-periodic variations (QPVs) with significance >3 sig. As these findings are based on few cycles only, care needs to be taken to properly account for random variations which can produce intervals of seemingly periodic behaviour. We present results of an updated timing ana…
Radio observations by ALMA and upper limits on gamma ray flux by Fermi LAT have ruled out inverse Compton scattering of Cosmic Microwave Background radiation by relativistic electrons (IC/CMB) as the origin of X-ray emission from extended jets of six quasars 3C 273, PKS 0637-752, PKS 1136-135, PKS 1229-021, PKS 1354+195, and PKS 2209+080. Here we consider two populations of accelerated electrons in each knot of the extended jets to explain the radio to optical and the X-ray emission by synchrotron cooling of relativistic electrons. In all cases the jet power required is lower than the Eddingto…
We have used single-dish centimeter-band, multi-frequency linear polarization and total flux density monitoring observations obtained by UMRAO at 14.5, 8, and 4.8 GHz during gamma-ray flaring to constrain propagating shock-in-jet models; this procedure allows us to probe jet conditions at or near the presumed parsec-scale gamma-ray emission site within the relativistic jet. Results are presented for the blazar 0420-014 during the gamma-ray flare detected by the LAT which peaked in late January 2010. Our work identifies the passage of three forward-moving transverse shocks during the radio-band…
Variable gamma-ray emission has been discovered in five Radio-loud Narrow Line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1) galaxies by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope. This has clearly demonstrated that these NLSy1 galaxies do have relativistic jets similar to two other cases of gamma-ray emitting Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), namely blazars and radio galaxies. We present here our results on the multi-band analysis of two gamma-ray emitting NLSy1 galaxies namely PKS 1502+036 (z = 0.409) and PKS 2004-447 (z = 0.240) using archival data. We generate multi-band long term light cu…
Long-term gamma-ray variability of a non-blazar Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) PKS 0521-36 is investigated by using Fermi-LAT pass 8 data covering from 2008 August to 2021 March. The results show that the histogram of the gamma-ray fluxes follows a log-normal distribution. Interestingly, in the analysis of about 5.8-year (from MJD 56317 to 58447) LAT data between two outbursts (occurring during 2012 October and 2019 May respectively), a quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) with a period of about 1.1 years (about 5 sigma of significance) is found in the Lomb-Scargle Periodogram (LSP), the Weighted W…

The beamed inverse Compton/cosmic microwave background model has generally been used for the interpretation of X-ray radiation from kiloparsec-scale jets of the core-dominated quasars. Recent \textit{Fermi}-LAT and \textit{HST} observations have brought this model into question. We examine the assumption that X-rays from the kiloparsec-scale jet of the quasar PKS~1127$-$145 are produced by inverse Compton scattering of the central source emission. In this context, we show that both similarity and distinction between the observed radio and X-ray spectral indices for some of the jet knots can be…
A time-dependent Synchrotron Self Compton model (SSC) which is able to motivate the used electron spectra of many SSC models as a balance of acceleration and radiative losses is introduced. Using stochastic acceleration as well as Fermi-I processes even electron spectra with a rising part can be explained, which are mandatory to fit the lowstate spectral energy distribution (SED) of PKS 2155-304 as constrained from Fermi LAT observations. Due to the time resolution the outburst of PKS 2155-304 observed by H.E.S.S. in 2006 can be modelled selfconsistently as fluctuations along the jet axis with…
The current generation of Cherenkov telescopes, together with Fermi-LAT, have greatly increased our knowledge of $γ$-ray blazars. Among them, the high-frequency-peaked BL Lacertae object (HBL) PKS1424+240 (z $\simeq$ 0.6) is the farthest persistent emitter of very-high-energy (VHE; E $\geq$ 100 GeV) $γ$-ray photons. Current emission models can satisfactorily reproduce typical blazar emission assuming that the dominant emission process is synchrotron-self-Compton (SSC) in HBLs; and external-inverse-Compton (EIC) in LBLs and FSRQs. Hadronic models are also able to correctly reproduce the $γ$-ray…
Axion-Like Particles (ALPs), if exist in nature, are expected to mix with photons in the presence of an external magnetic field. The energy range of photons which undergo strong mixing with ALPs depends on the ALP mass, on its coupling with photons as well as on the external magnetic field and particle density configurations. Recent observations of blazars by the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope in the 0.1-300 GeV energy range show a break in their spectra in the 1-10 GeV range. We have modeled this spectral feature for the flat-spectrum radio quasar 3C454.3 during its November 2010 outburst, a…
The flat spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) PKS 2123-463 was associated in the First Fermi-LAT source catalog with the gamma-ray source 1FGL J2126.1-4603, but when considering the full first two years of Fermi observations, no gamma-ray source at a position consistent with this FSRQ was detected, and thus PKS 2123-463 was not reported in the Second Fermi-LAT source catalog. On 2011 December 14 a gamma-ray source positionally consistent with PKS 2123-463 was detected in flaring activity by Fermi-LAT. This activity triggered radio-to-X-ray observations by the Swift, GROND, ATCA, Ceduna, and KAT-7 obse…
The Chandra X-ray observatory has discovered several dozen anomalously X-ray-bright jets associated with powerful quasars. A popular explanation for the X-ray flux from the knots in these jets is that relativistic synchrotron-emitting electrons inverse-Compton scatter Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) photons to X-ray energies (the IC/CMB model). This model predicts a high gamma-ray flux which should be detectable by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) for many sources. GeV-band upper limits from Fermi/LAT for the well-known anomalous X-ray jet in PKS 0637-752 were previously shown in Meyer e…
PKS 1510--089 is a bright and active $γ$-ray source that showed strong and complex $γ$-ray flares in mid-2015 during which the Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov telescopes detected variable very high energy (VHE; photon energies $>$100 GeV) emission. We present long-term multi-frequency radio, optical, and $γ$-ray light curves of PKS 1510--089 from 2013 to 2018, and results of an analysis of the jet kinematics and linear polarization using 43 GHz Very Long Baseline Array data observed between late 2015 and mid-2017. We find that a strong radio flare trails the $γ$-ray flares in 2015, s…
The spectral energy distribution (SED) of high-frequency peaked BL Lac objects (HBL) is characterized by two peaks: one in the UV-X-ray and one in the GeV-TeV regime. An interesting object for analyzing these broadband characteristics is PKS 2005-489, which in 2004 showed the softest TeV spectrum ever measured. In 2009, a multi-wavelength campaign has been conducted with, for the first time, simultaneous observations by H.E.S.S. (TeV), Fermi/LAT (GeV), RXTE (keV), Swift (keV, UV, optical) and ATOM (optical) to cover the two peaks of the SED. During this campaign PKS 2005-489 underwent a high s…
The results of the first ever contemporaneous multi-wavelength observation campaign on the BL Lac object PKS2155-304 involving Swift, NuSTAR, Fermi-LAT and H.E.S.S. are reported. The use of these instruments allows us to cover a broad energy range, important for disentangling the different radiative mechanisms. The source, observed from June 2013 to October 2013, was found in a low flux state with respect to previous observations but exhibited highly significant flux variability in the X-rays. The high-energy end of the synchrotron spectrum can be traced up to 40 keV without significant contam…
PKS 2155-304 is a blazar located in the Southern Hemisphere, monitored with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) at very high energy (VHE, E>100 GeV) $γ$ rays every year since 2002. Thanks to the large data set collected in the VHE range and simultaneous coverage in optical, ultraviolet (UV), X-ray and high energy $γ$-ray ranges, this object is an excellent laboratory to study spectral and temporal variability in blazars. However, despite many years of dense monitoring, the nature of the variability observed in PKS 2155-304 remains puzzling. In this paper, we discuss the complex spec…
The Fermi Flare Advocate (also known as Gamma-ray Sky Watcher, FA-GSW) service provides for a daily quicklook analysis and review of the high-energy gamma-ray sky seen by the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. The duty offers alerts for potentially new gamma-ray sources, interesting transients and relevant flares. A public weekly digest containing the main highlights about the GeV gamma-ray sky is published in the web-based Fermi Sky Blog. During the first 3 years of all-sky survey, more than 150 Astronomical Telegrams, several alerts to the TeV Cherenkov telescopes, and targets of opportunity t…
We report a nominally high-confidence $γ$-ray quasi-periodic modulation in the blazar PKS 0301$-$243. For this target, we analyze its \emph{Fermi}-LAT Pass 8 data covering from 2008 August to 2017 May. Two techniques, i.e., the maximum likelihood optimization and the exposure-weighted aperture photometry, are used to build the $γ$-ray light curves. Then both the Lomb-Scargle Periodogram and the Weighted Wavelet Z-transform are applied to the light curves to search for period signals. A quasi-periodicity with a period of $2.1\pm0.3$ yr appears at the significance level of $\sim5σ$, although it …
PKS 0558-504 is a highly variable, X-ray bright, radio-loud, Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy with super-Eddington accretion rate and extended jets that do not dominate the emission beyond the radio band. Therefore, this source represents an ideal laboratory to shed some light on the central engine in highly accreting systems and specifically on the link between accretion disc and corona. Here we present the results from a 1.5 year monitoring with Swift XRT and UVOT. The simultaneous coverage at several wavelengths confirms that PKS 0558-504 is highly variable in any band from optical, to UV and X…
Very-high energy (VHE) emission has been detected from PKS 0447-439 with the H.E.S.S. Cherenkov telescope array. This blazar is one of the brightest hard-spectrum extragalactic objects in the Fermi bright source list. Its detection with H.E.S.S. triggered Target of Opportunity observations with the Swift and RXTE telescopes, which show rapid flaring in the X-ray band. The spectrum and light curve measured by H.E.S.S. are presented. Along with the Fermi LAT data it is possible to put an upper limit on the redshift of the source. Implications of the flux evolution are discussed briefly.
We analyze the quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) of the historical light curve of FSRQs PKS 0405-385 detected by the Fermi LAT from August 2008 to November 2021. To identify and determine the QPO signal of PKS 0405-385 in the $γ$-ray light curve, we use four time series analysis techniques based on frequency and time domains, i.e., the Lomb-Scargle periodogram (LSP), the weighted wavelet z-transform (WWZ), the REDFIT and the epoch folding. The results show that PKS 0405-385 has a quasi-periodic behavior of $\sim$2.8 yr with the significance of $\sim$4.3$σ$ in Fermi long-term monitoring. Remarka…
PKS 2142-758 is a flat spectrum radio quasar which emits few, weak but significant gamma-ray flares in the MeV through GeV energy range. The first flare occured on April 4th, 2010, when the source reached a daily flux of (1.1 \pm 0.3) * 10^-6 ph cm^-2 s^-1 (ATEL #2539) in the 100 MeV to 300 GeV range. This flux represented more than an order of magnitude increase over its quiescent flux. Since the initial flare, this source has been detected in an elevated state within the same energy range from October to November of 2010 and another period ranging from July to August of 2011. During the late…
Blazars are the most abundant class of known extragalactic very-high-energy (VHE, E>100 GeV) gamma-ray sources. However, one of the biggest difficulties in investigating their VHE emission resides in their limited number, since less than 60 of them are known by now. In this contribution we report on H.E.S.S. observations of the BL Lac object PKS 1440-389. This source has been selected as target for H.E.S.S. based on its high-energy gamma-ray properties measured by Fermi-LAT. The extrapolation of this bright, hard-spectrum gamma-ray blazar into the VHE regime made a detection on a relatively sh…
The active galaxy PKS 0208-512, detected at lower energies by COMPTEL, has been claimed to be a MeV blazar from EGRET. We report on the most recent INTEGRAL observations of the blazar PKS 0208-512, which are supplemented by Swift ToO observations. The high energy X-ray and gamma-ray emission of PKS 0208-512 during August - December 2008 has been studied using 682 ks of INTEGRAL guest observer time and ~ 56 ks of Swift/XRT observations. These data were collected during the decay of a gamma-ray flare observed by Fermi/LAT. At X-ray energies (0.2 - 10 keV) PKS 0208-512 is significantly detected b…
We study the production of VHE emission in blazars as a superposition of a steady component from a baryonic jet and a time- dependent contribution from an inner e-e+ beam launched by the black hole. Both primary relativistic electrons and protons are injected in the jet, and the particle distributions along it are found by solving a one-dimensional transport equation that accounts for convection and cooling. The short-timescale variability of the emission is explained by local pair injections in turbulent regions of the inner beam. For illustration, we apply the model to the case of PKS 2155-3…
Strong X-ray emission from large scale jets of radio loud quasars still remains an open problem. Models based on inverse Compton scattering off CMB photons by relativistically beamed jets have recently been ruled out, since Fermi LAT observations for 3C 273 and PKS 0637-752 give the upper limit far below the model prediction. Synchrotron emission from a separate electron population with multi-hundred TeV energies remains a possibility although its origin is not well known. We examine a photo-hadronic origin of such high energy electrons/positrons, assuming that protons are accelerated up to $1…
We present preliminary results of the X-ray analysis of XMM-Newton and Swift observations as part of a multi-wavelength monitoring campaign in 2012 of the radio-loud narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxy PKS 2004-447. The source was recently detected in gamma-rays by Fermi/LAT among only four other galaxies of that type. The 0.5-10 keV X-ray spectrum is well-described by a simple absorbed powerlaw (photon index ~ 1.6). The source brightness exhibits variability on timescales of months to years with indications for spectral variability, which follows a 'bluer-when-brighter' behaviour, similar to blazars…
The blazar PKS 1510-089 was the first of the flat spectrum radio quasar type, which had been detected simultaneously by a ground based Cherenkov telescope (H.E.S.S.) and the LAT instrument on board the Fermi satellite. Given the strong broad line region emission defining this blazar class, and the resulting high optical depth for VHE ($E>100\,$GeV) $γ$-rays, it was surprising to detect VHE emission from such an object. In May 2015, PKS 1510-089 exhibited high states throughout the electromagnetic spectrum. Target of Opportunity observations with the H.E.S.S. experiment revealed strong and unpr…
We report on multifrequency observations of the gamma-ray emitting narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy PKS 1502+036 performed from radio to gamma-rays during 2008 August-2012 November by Fermi-LAT, Swift (XRT and UVOT), OVRO, VLBA, and VLA. No significant variability has been observed in gamma-rays, with 0.1-100 GeV flux that ranged between (3-7)x10^-8 ph/cm^2/s using 3-month time bins. The photon index of the LAT spectrum (Gamma=2.60+/-0.06) and the apparent isotropic gamma-ray luminosity, L(0.1-100 GeV)= 7.8x10^45 erg/s, over 51 months are typical of a flat spectrum radio quasar. The radio spectral…
A study of the gravitationally lensed blazar PKS 1830-211 was carried out using multi waveband data collected by Fermi-LAT, Swift-XRT and Swift-UVOT telescopes between MJD 58400 to MJD 58800 (9 Oct 2018 to 13 Nov 2019). Flaring states were identified by analysing the gamma-ray light curve. Simultaneous multi-waveband SED were obtained for those flaring periods. A cross-correlation analysis of the multi-waveband data was carried out, which suggested a common origin of the gamma-ray and X-ray emission. The broadband emission mechanism was studied by modelling the SED using a leptonic model. Phys…
