In magnonics, an emerging branch of wave physics characterized by low-energy consumption, it is highly desirable to realize circuit elements within the scope of spin-wave computing. Here, based on numerical simulations, we demonstrate the functionality of the spin-wave diode and the circulator to steer and manipulate spin waves over a wide range of frequency in the GHz regime. They take advantage of the unidirectional coupling induced by the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction to transfer the spin wave between thin ferromagnetic layers in only one direction of propagation. Using the multilayered structure consisting of Py and Co in direct contact with Pt, we obtain sub-micrometer-size devices of high efficiency. In the diode, the power loss ratio between forward and reverse direction reaches 22 dB, while in the four-port circulator, the efficiency exceeds 13 dB. Thus, our work contributes to the emerging branch of energy-efficient magnonic logic devices, where, thanks to short wavelength of spin waves, it is possible to realize nanoscale devices.
We investigate the heat transport properties of a three-level system coupled to three thermal baths, assuming a model based on superconducting circuit implementations. The system-bath coupling is mediated by resonators which serve as frequency filters for the different qutrit transitions. Taking into account the finite quality factors of the resonators, we find thermal rectification and circulation effects not expected in configurations with perfectly-filtered couplings. Heat leakage in off-resonant transitions can be exploited to make the system work as an ideal diode where heat flows in the …

Spin waves, the collective excitations of the magnetic order parameter, and magnons, the associated quasiparticles, are envisioned as possible data carriers in future wave-based computing architectures. On the road towards spin-wave computing, the development of a diode-like device capable of transmitting spin waves in only one direction, thus allowing controlled signal routing, is an essential step. Here, we report on the design and experimental realization of a microstructured magnonic diode in a ferromagnetic bilayer system. Effective unidirectional propagation of spin waves is achieved by …
Unidirectional light transport in one-dimensional nanomaterials at the quantum level is a crucial goal to achieve for upcoming computational devices. We here employ a full-quantum mechanical approach based on master equation to describe unidirectional light transport through a pair of two-level systems coupled to a one-dimensional waveguide. By comparing with published semi-classical results, we find that the nonlinearity of the system is reduced, thereby reducing also the unidirectional light transport efficiency. Albeit not fully efficient, we find that the considered quantum system can work…
We report the finding of unidirectional electronic properties, analogous to a semiconductor diode, in two-dimensional artificial permalloy honeycomb lattice of ultra-small bond, with a typical length of ~ 12 nm. The unidirectional transport behavior, characterized by the asymmetric colossal enhancement in differential conductivity at a modest current application of ~ 10-15 $μ$A, persists to T = 300 K in honeycomb lattice of thickness ~ 6 nm. The asymmetric behavior arises without the application of magnetic field. A qualitative analysis of experimental data suggests the role of magnetic charge…
We show that interlayer Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in combination with non-local Gilbert damping gives rise to unidirectional magnetic coupling. That is, the coupling between two magnetic layers -- say the left and right layer -- is such that dynamics of the left layer leads to dynamics of the right layer, but not vice versa. We discuss the implications of this result for the magnetic susceptibility of a magnetic bilayer, electrically-actuated spin-current transmission, and unidirectional spin-wave packet generation and propagation. Our results may enable a route towards spin-current an…
Unidirectional nonreciprocal transport is at the heart of many fundamental problems and applications in both science and technology. Here we study the novel design of wave diode devices by engineering asymmetric shapes of nonlinear materials to realize the function of non-reciprocal wave propagations. We first show analytical results revealing that both nonlinearity and asymmetry are necessary to induce such non-reciprocal (asymmetric) wave propagations. Detailed numerical simulations are further performed for a more realistic geometric wave diode model with typical asymmetric shape, where goo…
A diode, a device allowing unidirectional signal transmission, is a fundamental element of logic structures and lies in the heart of modern information systems. Spin wave or magnon, representing a collective quasi-particle excitation of the magnetic order in magnetic materials, is a promising candidate of information carrier for the next generation energy-saving technologies. Here we propose a scalable and reprogrammable pure spin wave logic hardware architecture using domain walls and surface anisotropy stripes as waveguides on a single magnetic wafer. We demonstrate theoretically the design …
The observation of magnetic diode behavior with ultra-low forward voltage of 5 mV renders new venue for energetically efficient spintronic device research in the unconventional system of two-dimensional permalloy honeycomb lattice. Detailed understanding of temperature and magnetic field tuning of diode behavior is imperative to any practical application. Here, we report a comprehensive study in this regard by performing electrical measurements on magnetic diode sample as functions of temperature and magnetic field. Magnetic diode is found to persist across the broad temperature range. Magneti…
Controlling the flow of charge neutral interlayer exciton (IX) quasiparticles can potentially lead to low loss excitonic circuits. Here, we report unidirectional transport of IXs along nanoscale electrostatically defined channels in an MoSe$_2$-WSe$_2$ heterostructure. These results are enabled by a lithographically defined triangular etch in a graphene gate to create a potential energy ''slide''. By performing spatially and temporally resolved photoluminescence measurements, we measure smoothly varying IX energy along the structure and high-speed exciton flow with a drift velocity up to 2 * 1…
In order to address many of the challenges and bottlenecks currently experienced by traditional charge based technologies, various alternatives are being actively explored to provide potential solutions of device miniaturization and scaling in the more-than-MOORE era. Amongst these alternatives, spintronics physics and devices have recently attracted a rapidly increasing interest by exploiting the additional degree of electron's spins. For example, magnetic domain-wall racetrack-memory and logic devices have been realized via manipulating domain-wall motion. As compared to domain-wall based de…
Nonreciprocal devices that permit wave transmission in only one direction are indispensible in many fields of science including, e.g., electronics, optics, acoustics, and thermodynamics. Manipulating phonons using such nonreciprocal devices may have a range of applications such as phonon diodes, transistors, switches, etc. One way of achieving nonreciprocal phononic devices is to use materials with strong nonlinear response to phonons. However, it is not easy to obtain the required strong mechanical nonlinearity, especially for few-phonon situations. Here, we present a general mechanism to amp…
