The cooperative control applied to vehicles allows the optimization of traffic on the roads. There are many aspects to consider in the case of the operation of autonomous vehicles on highways since there are different external parameters that can be involved in the analysis of a network. In this paper, we present the design and simulation of adaptive control for a platoon with heterogeneous vehicles, taking into account that not all vehicles can communicate their control input, and in turn include structured nonlinear uncertainty input parameters.
This paper presents a distributed synchronization strategy for connected and automated vehicles in traffic networks. The strategy considers vehicles traveling from one intersection to the next as waves. The phase angle and frequency of each wave map to its position and velocity, respectively. The goal is to synchronize traffic such that intersecting traffic waves are out of phase at every intersection. This ensures the safe collective navigation of intersections. Vehicles share their phase angles through the V2X infrastructure, and synchronize these angles using the Kuramoto equation. This is …
Full drive-by-wire electric vehicles (FDWEV) with X-by-wire technology can achieve independent driving, braking, and steering of each wheel, providing a good application platform for autonomous driving technology. Path planning and tracking control, in particular, are critical components of autonomous driving. However, It is challenging to comprehensively design an robust control algorithm by integrating vehicle path planning in a complicated unstructured scenario for FDWEV. To address the above issue, this paper first proposes the artificial potential field (APF) method for path planning in t…
The operation of many network communication protocols require accurate time synchronization between nodes. In the automotive space, IEEE 802.3bw (commonly referred to as automotive ethernet) is quickly becoming the most popular in-vehicle communication protocol between electronic control units (ECUs). The rapid advance of autonomous vehicles is predicated on a high throughput of multiple HD video streams, LIDAR readings, ML inferences, and vehicular control signals propagating on the same bus. To ensure reliability, security, and safety, for millions of passengers and bystanders, it is essenti…
Increased growth in the global Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) (drone) industry has expanded possibilities for fully autonomous UAV applications. A particular application which has in part motivated this research is the use of UAV in wide area search and surveillance operations in unstructured outdoor environments. The critical issue with such environments is the lack of structured features that could aid in autonomous flight, such as road lines or paths. In this paper, we propose an End-to-End Multi-Task Regression-based Learning approach capable of defining flight commands for navigation and …

Ensuring safe behavior for automated vehicles in unregulated traffic areas poses a complex challenge for the industry. It is an open problem to provide scalable and certifiable solutions to this challenge. We derive a trajectory planner based on model predictive control which interoperates with a monitoring system for pedestrian safety based on cellular automata. The combined planner-monitor system is demonstrated on the example of a narrow indoor parking environment. The system features deterministic behavior, mitigating the immanent risk of black boxes and offering full certifiability. By us…

Learning in games has been widely used to solve many cooperative multi-agent problems such as coverage control, consensus, self-reconfiguration or vehicle-target assignment. One standard approach in this domain is to formulate the problem as a potential game and to use an algorithm such as log-linear learning to achieve the stochastic stability of globally optimal configurations. Standard versions of such learning algorithms are asynchronous, i.e., only one agent updates its action at each round of the learning process. To enable faster learning, we propose a synchronization strategy based on …
The paper proposes a reliable and robust planning solution to the long range robotic navigation problem in extremely cluttered environments. A two-layer planning architecture is proposed that leverages both the environment map and the direct depth sensor information to ensure maximal information gain out of the onboard sensors. A frontier-based pose sampling technique is used with a fast marching cost-to-go calculation to select a goal pose and plan a path to maximize robot exploration rate. An artificial potential function approach, relying on direct depth measurements, enables the robot to f…
This paper considers a cooperative cruise control problem from a predictive control perspective. Online decision-making is used to be executed during the driving process based on the information obtained from the network. We formalize a synchronization problem approach from a predictive control theory using bargaining games to find an operating agreement between the vehicles. Finally, we test these results in an emulation environment in a hardware-in-the-loop system.
The application of cooperative localization in vehicular networks is attractive to improve accuracy and coverage. Conventional distance measurements between vehicles are limited by the need for synchronization and provide no heading information of the vehicle. To address this, we present a cooperative localization algorithm using posterior linearization belief propagation (PLBP) utilizing angle-of-arrival (AoA)-only measurements. Simulation results show that both directional and positional root mean squared error (RMSE) of vehicles can be decreased significantly and converge to a low value in …
