We study the family of vertical projections whose fibers are right cosets of horizontal planes in the Heisenberg group, $\mathbb{H}^n$. We prove lower bounds for Hausdorff dimension distortion of sets under these mappings, with respect to the Euclidean metric and also the natural quotient metric which we show behaves like the Euclidean metric in this context. Our bounds are sharp in a large part of the dimension range, and we give conjectural sharp lower bounds for the remaining range. Our approach also lets us improve the known almost sure lower bound for the standard family of vertical projections in $\mathbb{H}^n$ for $n \geq 2$.

Frequency of Sobolev dimension distortion of horizontal subgroups of Heisenberg groups

We study the behavior of Sobolev mappings defined on the Heisenberg groups with respect to a foliation by left cosets of a horizontal homogeneous subgroup. We quantitatively estimate, in terms of Euclidean Hausdorff dimension, the size of the set of cosets that are mapped onto sets of high dimension. The proof of our main result combines ideas of Gehring and Mostow about the absolute continuity of quasiconformal mappings with Mattila's projection and slicing machinery.

A Koebe distortion theorem for quasiconformal mappings in the Heisenberg group

We prove a Koebe distortion theorem for the average derivative of a quasiconformal mapping between domains in the sub-Riemannian Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}_1$. Embedding the Heisenberg group into a bounded dimensional Euclidean space with optimal distortion

Markov convexity and nonembeddability of the Heisenberg group

We compute the Markov convexity invariant of the continuous infinite dimensional Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}_\infty$ to show that it is Markov 4-convex and cannot be Markov $p$-convex for any $p < 4$. As Markov convexity is a biLipschitz invariant and Hilbert space is Markov 2-convex, this gives a different proof of the classical theorem of Pansu and Semmes that the Heisenberg group does not admit a biLipschitz embedding into any Euclidean space. Dimension distortion by Sobolev mappings in foliated metric spaces

We quantify the extent to which a supercritical Sobolev mapping can increase the dimension of subsets of its domain, in the setting of metric measure spaces supporting a Poincaré inequality. For foliations of a metric space X defined by a David--Semmes regular mapping we quantitatively estimate, in terms of Hausdorff dimension, the size of the set of leaves of the foliation that are mapped onto sets of higher dimension. Embedding snowflakes of Carnot groups into bounded dimensional Euclidean spaces with optimal distortion

We show that for any Carnot group $G$ there exists a natural number $D_G$ such that for any $0<\varepsilon<1/2$ the metric space $(G,d_G^{1-\varepsilon})$ admits a bi-Lipschitz embedding into $\mathbb{R}^{D_G}$ with distortion $O_G(\varepsilon^{-1/2})$. Foliated corona decompositions

We prove that the $L_4$ norm of the vertical perimeter of any measurable subset of the $3$-dimensional Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}$ is at most a universal constant multiple of the (Heisenberg) perimeter of the subset. We show that this isoperimetric-type inequality is optimal in the sense that there are sets for which it fails to hold with the $L_4$ norm replaced by the $L_q$ norm for any $q<4$.
