We study the convex relaxation of a polynomial optimization problem, maximizing a product of linear forms over the complex sphere. We show that this convex program is also a relaxation of the permanent of Hermitian positive semidefinite (HPSD) matrices. By analyzing a constructive randomized rounding algorithm, we obtain an improved multiplicative approximation factor to the permanent of HPSD matrices, as well as computationally efficient certificates for this approximation. We also propose an analog of van der Waerden's conjecture for HPSD matrices, where the polynomial optimization problem is interpreted as a relaxation of the permanent.
Disjointly constrained multilinear programming concerns the problem of maximizing a multilinear function on the product of finitely many disjoint polyhedra. While maximizing a linear function on a polytope (linear programming) is known to be solvable in polynomial time, even bilinear programming is NP-hard. Based on a reformulation of the problem in terms of sum-of-squares polynomials, we study a hierarchy of semidefinite relaxations to the problem. It follows from the general theory that the sequence of optimal values converges asymptotically to the optimal value of the multilinear program. W…
We study multivariate normal models that are described by linear constraints on the inverse of the covariance matrix. Maximum likelihood estimation for such models leads to the problem of maximizing the determinant function over a spectrahedron, and to the problem of characterizing the image of the positive definite cone under an arbitrary linear projection. These problems at the interface of statistics and optimization are here examined from the perspective of convex algebraic geometry.
We study the problem of maximizing the geometric mean of $d$ low-degree non-negative forms on the real or complex sphere in $n$ variables. We show that this highly non-convex problem is NP-hard even when the forms are quadratic and is equivalent to optimizing a homogeneous polynomial of degree $O(d)$ on the sphere. The standard Sum-of-Squares based convex relaxation for this polynomial optimization problem requires solving a semidefinite program (SDP) of size $n^{O(d)}$, with multiplicative approximation guarantees of $Ω(\frac{1}{n})$. We exploit the compact representation of this polynomial t…
In this paper, "chance optimization" problems are introduced, where one aims at maximizing the probability of a set defined by polynomial inequalities. These problems are, in general, nonconvex and computationally hard. With the objective of developing systematic numerical procedures to solve such problems, a sequence of convex relaxations based on the theory of measures and moments is provided, whose sequence of optimal values is shown to converge to the optimal value of the original problem. Indeed, we provide a sequence of semidefinite programs of increasing dimension which can arbitrarily …
We focus on computing certified upper bounds for the positive maximal singular value (PMSV) of a given matrix. The PMSV problem boils down to maximizing a quadratic polynomial on the intersection of the unit sphere and the nonnegative orthant. We provide a hierarchy of tractable semidefinite relaxations to approximate the value of the latter polynomial optimization problem as closely as desired. This hierarchy is based on an extension of Pólya's representation theorem. Doing so, positive polynomials can be decomposed as weighted sums of squares of $s$-nomials, where $s$ can be a priori fixed (…
Hydro unit commitment is the problem of maximizing water use efficiency while minimizing start-up costs in the daily operation of multiple hydro plants, subject to constraints on short-term reservoir operation, and long-term goals. A low-rank rounding heuristic is presented for the semidefinite relaxation of the mixed-integer quadratic-constrained formulation of this problem. In addition to limits on reservoir and generator operation, transmission constraints are represented by an approximate AC power flow model. In our proposed method, the mathematical program is equivalently formulated as a …
The purpose of this paper is to solve the 0-1 $k$-item quadratic knapsack problem $(kQKP)$, a problem of maximizing a quadratic function subject to two linear constraints. We propose an exact method based on semidefinite optimization. The semidefinite relaxation used in our approach includes simple rank one constraints, which can be handled efficiently by interior point methods. Furthermore, we strengthen the relaxation by polyhedral constraints and obtain approximate solutions to this semidefinite problem by applying a bundle method. We review other exact solution methods and compare all thes…
This work studies the problem of maximizing a higher degree real homogeneous multivariate polynomial over the unit sphere. This problem is equivalent to finding the leading eigenvalue of the associated symmetric tensor of higher order, which is nonconvex and NP-hard. Recent advances show that semidefinite relaxation is quite effective to find a global solution. However, the solution methods involve full/partial eigenvalue decomposition during the iterates, which heavily limits its efficiency and scalability. On the other hand, for odd degree (odd order) cases, the order has to be increased to …
Identifying clusters of similar objects in data plays a significant role in a wide range of applications. As a model problem for clustering, we consider the densest k-disjoint-clique problem, whose goal is to identify the collection of k disjoint cliques of a given weighted complete graph maximizing the sum of the densities of the complete subgraphs induced by these cliques. In this paper, we establish conditions ensuring exact recovery of the densest k cliques of a given graph from the optimal solution of a particular semidefinite program. In particular, the semidefinite relaxation is exact f…
We present two algorithms for large-scale low-rank Euclidean distance matrix completion problems, based on semidefinite optimization. Our first method works by relating cliques in the graph of the known distances to faces of the positive semidefinite cone, yielding a combinatorial procedure that is provably robust and parallelizable. Our second algorithm is a first order method for maximizing the trace---a popular low-rank inducing regularizer---in the formulation of the problem with a constrained misfit. Both of the methods output a point configuration that can serve as a high-quality initial…
This study focuses on Multi-Channel Transcranial Electrical Stimulation, a non-invasive brain method for stimulating neuronal activity under the influence of low-intensity currents. We introduce mathematical formulation for finding a current pattern which optimizes a L1-norm fit between a given focal target distribution and volume current density inside the brain. L1-norm is well-known to favor well-localized or sparse distributions compared to L2-norm (least-squares) fitted estimates. We present a linear programming approach which performs L1-norm fitting and penalization of the current patte…
We describe methods for proving bounds on infinite-time averages in differential dynamical systems. The methods rely on the construction of nonnegative polynomials with certain properties, similarly to the way nonlinear stability can be proved using Lyapunov functions. Nonnegativity is enforced by requiring the polynomials to be sums of squares, a condition which is then formulated as a semidefinite program (SDP) that can be solved computationally. Although such computations are subject to numerical error, we demonstrate two ways to obtain rigorous results: using interval arithmetic to control…
A large number of problems in optimization, machine learning, signal processing can be effectively addressed by suitable semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxations. Unfortunately, generic SDP solvers hardly scale beyond instances with a few hundreds variables (in the underlying combinatorial problem). On the other hand, it has been observed empirically that an effective strategy amounts to introducing a (non-convex) rank constraint, and solving the resulting smooth optimization problem by ascent methods. This non-convex problem has --generically-- a large number of local maxima, and the reason…
In this paper, we generalize the chance optimization problems and introduce constrained volume optimization where enables us to obtain convex formulation for challenging problems in systems and control. We show that many different problems can be cast as a particular cases of this framework. In constrained volume optimization, we aim at maximizing the volume of a semialgebraic set under some semialgebraic constraints. Building on the theory of measures and moments, a sequence of semidefinite programs are provided, whose sequence of optimal values is shown to converge to the optimal value of th…
A great variety of fundamental optimization and counting problems arising in computer science, mathematics and physics can be reduced to one of the following computational tasks involving polynomials and set systems: given an $m$-variate real polynomial $g$ and a family of subsets $B$ of $[m]$, (1) find $S\in B$ such that the monomial in $g$ corresponding to $S$ has the largest coefficient in $g$, or (2) compute the sum of coefficients of monomials in $g$ corresponding to all the sets in $B$. Special cases of these problems, such as computing permanents, sampling from DPPs and maximizing subde…
