We study the collapse in spherical symmetry of a massless scalar field minimally coupled to gravity using the semiclassical equations that are expected from loop quantum gravity. We find critical behavior of the mass as a function of the parameters of the initial data similar to that found by Choptuik in classical general relativity for a large set of initial data and values of the polymerization parameter. Contrary to wide expectations for quantum gravity, our semiclassical field equations have an exact scale invariance, as do the classical field equations. As one would then expect, we numerically find that the phase transition is second order, again as in the classical case.
It is shown that the recent corpuscular description of gravity generically excludes de Sitter spacetime in any semiclassical version of f(R) gravity. A phantom phenomenology of the cosmic dynamics is also naturally excluded.
In this essay, we qualitatively demonstrate how small non-perturbative corrections are a necessary addition to semiclassical gravity's path integral. We use this to discuss implications for Hawking's information paradox and the bags of gold paradox.
In any quantum theory of gravity, it is of the utmost importance to recover the limit of quantum theory in an external spacetime. In quantum geometrodynamics (quantization of general relativity in the Schrödinger picture), this leads in particular to the recovery of a semiclassical (WKB) time which governs the dynamics of non-gravitational fields in spacetime. Here, we first review this procedure with special emphasis on conceptual issues. We then turn to an alternative theory - Weyl (conformal) gravity, which is defined by a Lagrangian that is proportional to the square of the Weyl tensor. We…
For a large class of density matrices in semiclassical gravity, it is shown that the reduced density matrix which corresponds to tracing over the degrees of freedom in a spatial subregion is dominated by states for which the area of the boundary of the subregion is minimised. In the semiclassical limit, the entropy of the reduced density matrix is found to have a leading order contribution equal to one quarter of the minimal area in natural units. This is consistent with the Ryu-Takayanagi conjecture. An extension to higher derivative theories of gravity is established, for which the area is r…
The interpretation of semiclassical gravity as an ensemble-average of CFTs has provided much progress in understanding the factorization problem and the information paradox. In this article, we consider an averaging over boundary conditions in two-dimensional boundary conformal field theories (BCFTs). We show that the boundary averaging plays an important role not only in producing wormhole contributions but also in resolving the following problem. In general setups in AdS/BCFT, one can find unphysical solutions where branes have (self-)intersections. We show that the averaging nicely resolves…
We use complex semiclassical method to compute scattering amplitudes of a point particle in dilaton gravity with a boundary. This model has nonzero minimal black hole mass $M_{cr}$. We find that at energies below $M_{cr}$ the particle trivially scatters off the boundary with unit probability. At higher energies the scattering amplitude is exponentially suppressed. The corresponding semiclassical solution is interpreted as formation of an intermediate black hole decaying into the final-state particle. Relating the suppression of the scattering probability to the number of the intermediate black…
In this paper we explain how 4-dimensional general relativity and in particular, the Einstein equation, emerge from the spinfoam amplitude in loop quantum gravity. We propose a new limit which couples both the semiclassical limit and continuum limit of spinfoam amplitudes. The continuum Einstein equation emerges in this limit. Solutions of Einstein equation can be approached by dominant configurations in spinfoam amplitudes. A running scale is naturally associated to the sequence of refined triangulations. The continuum limit corresponds to the infrared limit of the running scale. An important…
The semiclassical approximation takes into account the gravitational contribution of zero-point energies. We model this contribution via the renormalized stress-energy tensor (RSET) of a massless scalar field, which we compute in a cutoff-regularized version of the Polyakov approximation. When the field is in the Boulware vacuum state (the natural vacuum for stellar geometries), the RSET works in favor of violating the Buchdahl compactness limit. We review the family of classical constant-density stellar solutions, paying particular attention to the notion of criticality -- the presence of off…
We present a new formalism for numerically treating the semiclassical gravitational collapse of a scalar quantum field in the radially symmetric case. Our formalism is time reversal invariant and the evolution of the scalar fields is unitary. We present some first results in the angular momentum $l=0$ approximation for an initially coherent state of a massless field and briefly discuss future prospects.
Recently, a new path integral formulation of Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG) has been derived in arXiv:1910.03763 from the reduced phase space formulation of the canonical LQG. This paper focuses on the semiclassical analysis of this path integral formulation. We show that dominant contributions of the path integral come from solutions of semiclassical equations of motion (EOMs), which reduces to Hamilton's equations of holonomies and fluxes ${h}(e),{p}^a(e)$ in the reduced phase space $\mathcal{P}_γ$ of the cubic lattice $γ$: $\dot{h}(e)=\{{h}(e),\, \mathbf{H}\}$, $\dot{p}^a(e)=\{{p}^a(e),\, \math…
In the semiclassical limit of de Sitter gravity a separation of scales takes place that divides the theory into a "cosmic" sector and a "microscopic" sector. A similar separation takes place in the double-scaled limit of SYK theory. We examine the scaling behaviors that accompany these limits and find parallels that support the previously conjectured duality between Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity (with positive cosmological constant), and double-scaled SYK. This paper is a companion to "dS JT Gravity and Double-Scaled SYK" by Adel Rahman, to appear simultaneously with this paper.

In loop quantum cosmology, polymer quantization is applied to gravity and Schrodinger quantization to matter. This approach misses interesting cosmological dynamics coming from the polymer quantization of matter. We demonstrate this in semiclassical cosmology with a scalar field and pressureless dust: gravity is kept classical, dust is used to fix the time gauge, and polymer quantization effects are isolated in the scalar field. The resulting dynamics shows a period of inflation, both with and without a scalar potential, and the emergence of a classical universe at late times. Since gravity is…
We explore how the initial value problem may be formulated for globally hyperbolic, Hadamard, solutions of the semiclassical Einstein-Klein-Gordon equations. Given a set of data on an initial 3-surface, consisting of the values on the surface of a spacetime metric and its first 3 time derivatives off the surface, we introduce a notion of 'surface Hadamard' state on the CCR algebra of the surface. We conjecture that, for a given such set of classical Cauchy data with a surface Hadamard state satisfying the semiclassical constraint equations, the initial value problem will be well posed. We pres…
