Realistic music generation has always remained as a challenging problem as it may lack structure or rationality. In this work, we propose a deep learning based music generation method in order to produce old style music particularly JAZZ with rehashed melodic structures utilizing a Bi-directional Long Short Term Memory (Bi-LSTM) Neural Network with Attention. Owing to the success in modelling long-term temporal dependencies in sequential data and its success in case of videos, Bi-LSTMs with attention serve as the natural choice and early utilization in music generation. We validate in our experiments that Bi-LSTMs with attention are able to preserve the richness and technical nuances of the music performed.

In this paper we present an attentional neural network for folk song classification. We introduce the concept of musical motif embedding, and show how using melodic local context we are able to model monophonic folk song motifs using the skipgram version of the word2vec algorithm. We use the motif embeddings to represent folk songs from Germany, China, and Sweden, and classify them using an attentional neural network that is able to discern relevant motifs in a song. The results show how the network obtains state of the art accuracy in a completely unsupervised manner, and how motif embeddings…

Deep learning has rapidly become the state-of-the-art approach for music generation. However, training a deep model typically requires a large training set, which is often not available for specific musical styles. In this paper, we present augmentative generation (Aug-Gen), a method of dataset augmentation for any music generation system trained on a resource-constrained domain. The key intuition of this method is that the training data for a generative system can be augmented by examples the system produces during the course of training, provided these examples are of sufficiently high quali…
The paper presents a method of the music generation based on LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory), contrasts the effects of different network structures on the music generation and introduces other methods used by some researchers.
Realistic music generation is a challenging task. When building generative models of music that are learnt from data, typically high-level representations such as scores or MIDI are used that abstract away the idiosyncrasies of a particular performance. But these nuances are very important for our perception of musicality and realism, so in this work we embark on modelling music in the raw audio domain. It has been shown that autoregressive models excel at generating raw audio waveforms of speech, but when applied to music, we find them biased towards capturing local signal structure at the ex…
The utilization of deep learning techniques in generating various contents (such as image, text, etc.) has become a trend. Especially music, the topic of this paper, has attracted widespread attention of countless researchers. The whole process of producing music can be divided into three stages, corresponding to the three levels of music generation: score generation produces scores, performance generation adds performance characteristics to the scores, and audio generation converts scores with performance characteristics into audio by assigning timbre or generates music in audio format directl…
Drawing an analogy with automatic image completion systems, we propose Music SketchNet, a neural network framework that allows users to specify partial musical ideas guiding automatic music generation. We focus on generating the missing measures in incomplete monophonic musical pieces, conditioned on surrounding context, and optionally guided by user-specified pitch and rhythm snippets. First, we introduce SketchVAE, a novel variational autoencoder that explicitly factorizes rhythm and pitch contour to form the basis of our proposed model. Then we introduce two discriminative architectures, Sk…

Fast and user-controllable music generation could enable novel ways of composing or performing music. However, state-of-the-art music generation systems require large amounts of data and computational resources for training, and are slow at inference. This makes them impractical for real-time interactive use. In this work, we introduce Musika, a music generation system that can be trained on hundreds of hours of music using a single consumer GPU, and that allows for much faster than real-time generation of music of arbitrary length on a consumer CPU. We achieve this by first learning a compact…
Music generation is always interesting in a sense that there is no formalized recipe. In this work, we propose a novel dual-track architecture for generating classical piano music, which is able to model the inter-dependency of left-hand and right-hand piano music. Particularly, we experimented with a lot of different models of neural network as well as different representations of music, and the results show that our proposed model outperforms all other tested methods. Besides, we deployed some special policies for model training and generation, which contributed to the model performance rema…
In this paper we introduce a novel feature augmentation approach for generating structured musical compositions comprising melodies and harmonies. The proposed method augments a connectionist generation model with count-down to song conclusion and meter markers as extra input features to study whether neural networks can learn to produce more aesthetically pleasing and structured musical output as a consequence of augmenting the input data with structural features. An RNN architecture with LSTM cells is trained on the Nottingham folk music dataset in a supervised sequence learning setup, follo…

Despite advances in deep algorithmic music generation, evaluation of generated samples often relies on human evaluation, which is subjective and costly. We focus on designing a homogeneous, objective framework for evaluating samples of algorithmically generated music. Any engineered measures to evaluate generated music typically attempt to define the samples' musicality, but do not capture qualities of music such as theme or mood. We do not seek to assess the musical merit of generated music, but instead explore whether generated samples contain meaningful information pertaining to emotion or …

Pop music generation has always been an attractive topic for both musicians and scientists for a long time. However, automatically composing pop music with a satisfactory structure is still a challenging issue. In this paper, we propose to leverage harmony-aware learning for structure-enhanced pop music generation. On the one hand, one of the participants of harmony, chord, represents the harmonic set of multiple notes, which is integrated closely with the spatial structure of music, the texture. On the other hand, the other participant of harmony, chord progression, usually accompanies the de…
The current wave of deep learning (the hyper-vitamined return of artificial neural networks) applies not only to traditional statistical machine learning tasks: prediction and classification (e.g., for weather prediction and pattern recognition), but has already conquered other areas, such as translation. A growing area of application is the generation of creative content, notably the case of music, the topic of this paper. The motivation is in using the capacity of modern deep learning techniques to automatically learn musical styles from arbitrary musical corpora and then to generate musical…

In this study, we explore the representation mapping from the domain of visual arts to the domain of music, with which we can use visual arts as an effective handle to control music generation. Unlike most studies in multimodal representation learning that are purely data-driven, we adopt an analysis-by-synthesis approach that combines deep music representation learning with user studies. Such an approach enables us to discover \textit{interpretable} representation mapping without a huge amount of paired data. In particular, we discover that visual-to-music mapping has a nice property similar …
Symbolic Music Generation relies on the contextual representation capabilities of the generative model, where the most prevalent approach is the Transformer-based model. The learning of musical context is also related to the structural elements in music, i.e. intro, verse, and chorus, which are currently overlooked by the research community. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical Transformer model to learn multi-scale contexts in music. In the encoding phase, we first designed a Fragment Scope Localization layer to syncopate the music into chords and sections. Then, we use a multi-scale atte…
We investigate the problem of modeling symbolic sequences of polyphonic music in a completely general piano-roll representation. We introduce a probabilistic model based on distribution estimators conditioned on a recurrent neural network that is able to discover temporal dependencies in high-dimensional sequences. Our approach outperforms many traditional models of polyphonic music on a variety of realistic datasets. We show how our musical language model can serve as a symbolic prior to improve the accuracy of polyphonic transcription.

Digital advances have transformed the face of automatic music generation since its beginnings at the dawn of computing. Despite the many breakthroughs, issues such as the musical tasks targeted by different machines and the degree to which they succeed remain open questions. We present a functional taxonomy for music generation systems with reference to existing systems. The taxonomy organizes systems according to the purposes for which they were designed. It also reveals the inter-relatedness amongst the systems. This design-centered approach contrasts with predominant methods-based surveys a…
In this article, we present musicaiz, an object-oriented library for analyzing, generating and evaluating symbolic music. The submodules of the package allow the user to create symbolic music data from scratch, build algorithms to analyze symbolic music, encode MIDI data as tokens to train deep learning sequence models, modify existing music data and evaluate music generation systems. The evaluation submodule builds on previous work to objectively measure music generation systems and to be able to reproduce the results of music generation models. The library is publicly available online. We en…
This paper presents an architecture for generating music for video games based on the Transformer deep learning model. Our motivation is to be able to customize the generation according to the taste of the player, who can select a corpus of training examples, corresponding to his preferred musical style. The system generates various musical layers, following the standard layering strategy currently used by composers designing video game music. To adapt the music generated to the game play and to the player(s) situation, we are using an arousal-valence model of emotions, in order to control the…

Music generation has always been a hot topic. When discussing symbolic music, melody or harmonies are usually seen as the only generating targets. But in fact, playing techniques are also quite an important part of the music. In this paper, we discuss the playing techniques generation problem by seeing it as a tagging problem. We propose a model that can use both the current data and external knowledge. Experiments were carried out by applying the proposed model in Chinese bamboo flute music, and results show that our method can make generated music more lively.

With recent breakthroughs in artificial neural networks, deep generative models have become one of the leading techniques for computational creativity. Despite very promising progress on image and short sequence generation, symbolic music generation remains a challenging problem since the structure of compositions are usually complicated. In this study, we attempt to solve the melody generation problem constrained by the given chord progression. This music meta-creation problem can also be incorporated into a plan recognition system with user inputs and predictive structural outputs. In partic…

In this work, we address the task of video background music generation. Some previous works achieve effective music generation but are unable to generate melodious music tailored to a particular video, and none of them considers the video-music rhythmic consistency. To generate the background music that matches the given video, we first establish the rhythmic relations between video and background music. In particular, we connect timing, motion speed, and motion saliency from video with beat, simu-note density, and simu-note strength from music, respectively. We then propose CMT, a Controllabl…
Structure is one of the most essential aspects of music, and music structure is commonly indicated through repetition. However, the nature of repetition and structure in music is still not well understood, especially in the context of music generation, and much remains to be explored with Music Information Retrieval (MIR) techniques. Analyses of two popular music datasets (Chinese and American) illustrate important music construction principles: (1) structure exists at multiple hierarchical levels, (2) songs use repetition and limited vocabulary so that individual songs do not follow general s…
This paper explores the idea of utilising Long Short-Term Memory neural networks (LSTMNN) for the generation of musical sequences in ABC notation. The proposed approach takes ABC notations from the Nottingham dataset and encodes it to be fed as input for the neural networks. The primary objective is to input the neural networks with an arbitrary note, let the network process and augment a sequence based on the note until a good piece of music is produced. Multiple calibrations have been done to amend the parameters of the network for optimal generation. The output is assessed on the basis of r…

While deep generative models have empowered music generation, it remains a challenging and under-explored problem to edit an existing musical piece at fine granularity. In this paper, we propose SDMuse, a unified Stochastic Differential Music editing and generation framework, which can not only compose a whole musical piece from scratch, but also modify existing musical pieces in many ways, such as combination, continuation, inpainting, and style transferring. The proposed SDMuse follows a two-stage pipeline to achieve music generation and editing on top of a hybrid representation including pi…

Music arrangement generation is a subtask of automatic music generation, which involves reconstructing and re-conceptualizing a piece with new compositional techniques. Such a generation process inevitably requires reference from the original melody, chord progression, or other structural information. Despite some promising models for arrangement, they lack more refined data to achieve better evaluations and more practical results. In this paper, we propose POP909, a dataset which contains multiple versions of the piano arrangements of 909 popular songs created by professional musicians. The m…

Recent advances in deep neural networks have enabled algorithms to compose music that is comparable to music composed by humans. However, few algorithms allow the user to generate music with tunable parameters. The ability to tune properties of generated music will yield more practical benefits for aiding artists, filmmakers, and composers in their creative tasks. In this paper, we introduce DeepJ - an end-to-end generative model that is capable of composing music conditioned on a specific mixture of composer styles. Our innovations include methods to learn musical style and music dynamics. We…

Many practices have been presented in music generation recently. While stylistic music generation using deep learning techniques has became the main stream, these models still struggle to generate music with high musicality, different levels of music structure, and controllability. In addition, more application scenarios such as music therapy require imitating more specific musical styles from a few given music examples, rather than capturing the overall genre style of a large data corpus. To address requirements that challenge current deep learning methods, we propose a statistical machine le…

We present in this paper PerformacnceNet, a neural network model we proposed recently to achieve score-to-audio music generation. The model learns to convert a music piece from the symbolic domain to the audio domain, assigning performance-level attributes such as changes in velocity automatically to the music and then synthesizing the audio. The model is therefore not just a neural audio synthesizer, but an AI performer that learns to interpret a musical score in its own way. The code and sample outputs of the model can be found online at https://github.com/bwang514/PerformanceNet.
