Figure-eight solutions are solutions to planar equal mass three-body problem under homogeneous or inhomogeneous potentials. They are known to be invariant under the transformation group $D_6$: the dihedral group of regular hexagons. Numerical investigation shows that each figure-eight solution has some bifurcation points. Six bifurcation patterns are known with respect to the symmetry of the bifurcated solution.
In this paper we will show the followings. The variational principle of action and group theory show that the bifurcations of every figure-eight solution are determined by the irreducible representations of $D_6$. Each irreducible representation has one to one correspondence to each bifurcation. This explains numerically observed six bifurcation patterns. In general, in Lagrangian mechanics, bifurcations of a periodic solution is determined by irreducible representations of the transformation group that leaves this solution invariant.
We report on the Morse index and periodic solutions bifurcating from the figure-eight choreography for the equal mass three-body problem under homogeneous potential $-1/r^a$ for $a \ge 0$, and under Lennard-Jones (LJ) type potential $1/r^{12}-1/r^6$, where $r$ is a distance between bodies. It is shown that the Morse index changes at a bifurcation point and all solutions bifurcating are approximated by variational functions responsible for the change of the Morse index. Inversely we observed %numerically bifurcation occurs at every point where the Morse index changes for the figure-eight choreo…
The figure eight is a remarkable solution to the Newtonian three-body problem in which the three equal masses chase each around a planar curve having the qualitative shape and symmetries of a figure eight. Here we prove that each lobe of this eight is convex.
We investigate three-body motion in three dimensions under the interaction potential proportional to r^alpha (alpha \neq 0) or log r, where r represents the mutual distance between bodies, with the following conditions: (I) the moment of inertia is non-zero constant, (II) the angular momentum is zero, and (III) one body is on the centre of mass at an instant. We prove that the motion which satisfies conditions (I)-(III) with equal masses for alpha \neq -2, 2, 4 is impossible. And motions which satisfy the same conditions for alpha=2, 4 are solved explicitly. Shapes of these orbits are not figu…
We report on numerical calculations of Morse index for figure-eight choreographic solutions to a system of three identical bodies in a plane interacting through homogeneous potential, $-1/r^a$, or through Lennard-Jones-type (LJ) potential, $1/r^{12} - 1/r^6$, where $r$ is a distance between the bodies. The Morse index is a number of independent variational functions giving negative second variation $S^{(2)}$ of action functional $S$. We calculated three kinds of Morse indices, $N$, $N_c$ and $N_e$, in the domain of the periodic, the choreographic and the figure-eight choreographic function, re…
We look at how evolution method deforms, when one considers Khovanov polynomials instead of Jones polynomials. We do this for the figure-eight-like knots (also known as 'double braid' knots, see arXiv:1306.3197) -- a two-parametric family of knots which "grows" from the figure-eight knot and contains both two-strand torus knots and twist knots. We prove that parameter space splits into four chambers, each with its own evolution, and two isolated points. Remarkably, the evolution in the Khovanov case features an extra eigenvalue, which drops out in the Jones (t -> -1) limit.
We report on figure-eight choreographic solutions to a system of three identical particles interacting through a potential of Lennard-Jones type, $1/r^{12}-1/r^6$ where $r$ is a distance between the particles. By numerical search, we found there are a multitude of such solutions. A series of them are close to a figure-eight solutions to a homogeneous system with no $1/r^{12}$ term in the potential. The rest are very different from them and have several points with large curvatures in their figure-eight orbits, at which particles are repelled. Here figure-eight choreographies are the periodic m…
We use the maximally permutation symmetric set of three-body coordinates, that consist of the "hyper-radius" $R = \sqrt{ρ^{2} + λ^{2}}$, the "rescaled area of the triangle" $\frac{\sqrt 3}{2 R^2} |{\bm ρ} \times {\bm λ}|$) and the (braiding) hyper-angle $ϕ= \arctan(\frac{2{\bm ρ} \cdot {\bm λ}}{λ^2 - ρ^2})$, to analyze the "figure-eight" choreographic three-body motion discovered by Moore \cite{Moore1993} in the Newtonian three-body problem. Here ${\bm ρ}, {\bm λ}$ are the two Jacobi relative coordinate vectors. We show that the periodicity of this motion is closely related to the braiding hyp…
Using Ohtsuki's method, we prove the Asymptotic Expansion Conjecture and the Volume Conjecture of the Reshetikhin-Turaev and the Turev-Viro invariants for all hyperbolic $3$-manifolds obtained by doing a Dehn-surgery along the figure-$8$ knot.
We developed a method to calculate the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the second derivative (Hessian) of action at choreographic three-body solutions that have the same symmetries as the figure-eight solution. A choreographic three-body solution is a periodic solution to equal mass planar three-body problem under potential function $\sum_{i<j} U(r_{ij})$, in which three masses chase each other on a single closed loop with equal time delay. We treat choreographic solutions that have the same symmetries as the figure-eight, namely, symmetry for choreography, for time reversal, and for time sh…
In this note we examine a possible extension of the matrix integral representation of knot invariants beyond the class of torus knots. In particular, we study a representation of the SU(2) quantum Racah coefficients by double matrix integrals. We find that the Racah coefficients are mapped to expansion coefficients in some basis of double integrals. The transformed coefficients have a number of interesting algebraic properties.
Differential expansion (DE) for a Wilson loop average in representation $R$ is built to respect degenerations of representations for small groups. At the same time it behaves nicely under some changes of the loop, e.g. of some knots in the case of $3d$ Chern-Simons theory. Especially simple is the relation between the DE for the trefoil $3_1$ and for the figure eight knot $4_1$. Since arbitrary colored HOMFLY for the trefoil are known from the Rosso-Jones formula, it is therefore enough to find their DE in order to make a conjecture for the figure eight. We fulfil this program for all rectangu…
We first take into account variational problems with periodic boundary conditions, and briefly recall some sufficient conditions for a periodic solution of the Euler-Lagrange equation to be either a directional, a weak, or a strong local minimizer. We then apply the theory to circular orbits of the Kepler problem with potentials of type $1/r^α, \, α> 0$. By using numerical computations, we show that circular solutions are strong local minimizers for $α> 1$, while they are saddle points for $α\in (0,1)$. Moreover, we show that for $α\in (1,2)$ the global minimizer of the action over periodic cu…
We describe the explicit form and the hidden structure of the answer for the HOMFLY polynomial for the figure eight and some other 3-strand knots in representation [21]. This is the first result for non-torus knots beyond (anti)symmetric representations, and its evaluation is far more complicated. We provide a whole variety of different arguments, allowing one to guess the answer for the figure eight knot, which can be also partly used in more complicated situations. Finally we report the result of exact calculation for figure eight and some other 3-strand knots based on the previously develop…
We rewrite the recently proposed differential expansion formula for HOMFLY polynomials of the knot $4_1$ in arbitrary rectangular representation $R=[r^s]$ as a sum over all Young sub-diagrams $λ$ of $R$ with extraordinary simple coefficients $D_{λ^{tr}}(r)\cdot D_λ(s)$ in front of the $Z$-factors. Somewhat miraculously, these coefficients are made from quantum dimensions of symmetric representations of the groups $SL(r)$ and $SL(s)$ and restrict summation to diagrams with no more than $s$ rows and $r$ columns. They possess a natural $β$-deformation to Macdonald dimensions and produces positive…
A series invariant of a complement of a knot was introduced recently. The invariant for several prime knots up to ten crossings have been explicitly computed. We present the first example of a satellite knot, namely, a cable of the figure eight knot, which has more than ten crossings. This cable knot result provides nontrivial evidence for the conjectures for the series invariant and demonstrates the robustness of integrality of the quantum invariant under the cabling operation. Furthermore, we observe a relation between the series invariant of the cable knot and the series invariant of the fi…
This article pursues the study of the knot state asymptotics in the large level limit initiated in "Knot sate Asymptotics I". As a main result, we prove the Witten asymptotic expansion conjecture for the Dehn fillings of the figure eight knot. The state of a knot is defined in the realm of Chern-Simons topological quantum field theory as a holomorphic section on the SU(2)-character manifold of the peripheral torus. In the previous paper, we conjectured that the knot state concentrates on the character variety of the knot with a given asymptotic behavior on the neighborhood of the abelian repre…
